In this manuscript, we present relaxation optimized methods for transfer of bilinear spin correlations along Ising spin chains. These relaxation optimized methods can be used as a building block for transfer of polarization between distant spins on a spin chain. Compared to standard techniques, significant reduction in relaxation losses is achieved by these optimized methods when transverse relaxation rates are much larger than the longitudinal relaxation rates and comparable to couplings between spins. We derive an upper bound on the efficiency of transfer of spin order along a chain of spins in the presence of relaxation and show that this bound can be approached by relaxation optimized pulse sequences presented in the paper.
Combinatorial optimization problems are computationally hard in general, but they are ubiquitous in our modern life. A coherent Ising machine (CIM) based on a multiple-pulse degenerate optical parametric oscillator (DOPO) is an alternative approach to solve these problems by a specialized physical computing system. To evaluate its potential performance, computational experiments are performed on maximum cut (MAX-CUT) problems against traditional algorithms such as semidefinite programming relaxation of Goemans-Williamson and simulated annealing by Kirkpatrick, et al. The numerical results empi…
We study the decoherence and the relaxation dynamics of topological states in an extended class of quantum Ising chains which can present a manyfold ground state subspace. The leading interaction of the spins with the environment is assumed to be the local fluctuations of the transverse magnetic field. By deriving the Lindblad equation using the many-body states, we investigate the relation between decoherence, energy relaxation and topology. In particular, in the topological phase and at low temperature, we analyze the dephasing rates between the different degenerate ground states.
Many applications of magnetic resonance are limited by rapid loss of spin coherence caused by large transverse relaxation rates. In nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of large proteins, increased relaxation losses lead to poor sensitivity of experiments and increased measurement time. In this paper we develop broadband relaxation optimized pulse sequences (BB-CROP) which approach fundamental limits of coherence transfer efficiency in the presence of very general relaxation mechanisms that include cross-correlated relaxation. These broadband transfer schemes use new techniques of chemical shift r…
We study multiple-spin coherence transfers in linear Ising spin chains with nearest neighbor couplings. These constitute a model for efficient information transfers in future quantum computing devices and for many multi-dimensional experiments for the assignment of complex spectra in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. We complement prior analytic techniques for multiple-spin coherence transfers with a systematic numerical study where we obtain strong evidence that a certain analytically-motivated family of restricted controls is sufficient for time-optimality. In the case of a linear thr…
We study the out-of-equilibrium probability distribution function of the local order parameter in the transverse field Ising quantum chain. Starting from a fully polarised state, the relaxation of the ferromagnetic order is analysed: we obtain a full analytical description of the late-time stationary distribution by means of a remarkable relation to the partition function of a 3-states classical model. Accordingly, depending on the phase whereto the post-quench Hamiltonian belongs, the probability distribution may locally retain memories of the initial long-range order. When quenching deep in …
We consider a chain of trapped ions to interact with each other via long-range interactions. This system can be used to simulate the long-range Ising model. We study the dynamics of quantum coherence of a single spin in the chain, where the spins are initially prepared in their upper states. The relaxation dynamics exhibits due to the genuine long-range interaction. The degree of quantum coherence of a single spin rapidly decreases and vanishes in the steady state. However, our numerical result suggests that the conventional spin chain model, which truncates the interactions between the distan…
We investigate the non-Markovian dynamics of an open Ising model simulated by a superconducting circuit. The quantum many-body system is weakly coupled to a white, pink- or blue-colored environment. The relaxation of the system in the strong inter-qubit interaction regime shows a metastable behaviour. In comparison with the dissipative system in the Markovian limit, the negative memory of the blue-colored noise weakens the system's relaxation. However, for the pink-colored noise the relaxation rate of the system is enhanced due to the positive memory effect. The understanding of quantum many-b…
We study the time evolution of the local magnetization in the critical Ising chain in a transverse field after a sudden change of the parameters at a defect. The relaxation of the defect magnetization is algebraic and the corresponding exponent, which is a continuous function of the defect parameters, is calculated exactly. In finite chains the relaxation is oscillating in time and its form is conjectured on the basis of precise numerical calculations.
Nonequilibrium dynamics of an isolated quantum spin chain with long-range Ising interactions that decay as $1/r^α$ ($0<α<1$) with the distance $r$ is studied. It turns out that long-range interactions give rise to a big timescale separation, which causes prethermalization for all $α\in(0,1)$. This conclusion is deduced by comparing two important timescales relevant for relaxation dynamics; one is the relaxation time of local permutation operators, which are quasi-conserved quantities in this system, and the other is the timescale of the initial relaxation due to the growth of quantum fluctuati…
We study the quantum Ising chain with boundary dephasing. By doubling the Hilbert space, the model is mapped to the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with imaginary chemical potential at the edges. We show analytically and numerically that the Liouvillian gap, i.e., the inverse relaxation time of the model, scales with the system size $ N $ as $ N^{-3} $.
We analyze the properties of low-energy bound states in the transverse-field Ising model and in the XXZ model on the square lattice. To this end, we develop an optimized implementation of perturbative continuous unitary transformations. The Ising model is studied in the small-field limit which is found to be a special case of the toric code model in a magnetic field. To analyze the XXZ model, we perform a perturbative expansion about the Ising limit in order to discuss the fate of the elementary magnon excitations when approaching the Heisenberg point.
Ising spin Hamiltonians are often used to encode a computational problem in their ground states. Quantum Annealing (QA) computing searches for such a state by implementing a slow time-dependent evolution from an easy-to-prepare initial state to a low energy state of a target Ising Hamiltonian of quantum spins, $H_I$. Here, we point to the existence of an analytical solution for such a problem for an arbitrary $H_I$ beyond the adiabatic limit for QA. This solution provides insights into the accuracy of nonadiabatic computations. Our QA protocol in the pseudo-adiabatic regime leads to a monotoni…
We present a quantitative semi-classical theory for the non-equilibrium dynamics of transverse Ising chains after quantum quenches, in particular sudden changes of the transverse field strength. We obtain accurate predictions for the quench dependent relaxation times and correlation lengths, and also about the recurrence times and quasiperiodicity of time dependent correlations in finite systems with open or periodic boundary conditions. We compare the quantiative predictions of our semi-classical theory (local magnetization, equal time bulk-bulk and surface-to-bulk correlations, and bulk auto…
We report analytic results for the correlation functions of long-range quantum Ising models in arbitrary dimension. In particular, we focus on the long-time evolution and the relevant timescales on which correlations relax to their equilibrium values. By deriving upper bounds on the correlation functions in the large-system limit, we prove that a wide separation of timescales, accompanied by a pronounced prethermalisation plateau, occurs for sufficiently long-ranged interactions.
We study a class of spin-$1/2$ quantum ladder models with generalised plaquette interactions in the presence of a transverse field. We show that in certain parameter regimes these models have strong zero modes responsible for the long relaxation times of edge spins. By exploiting an infinite set of symmetries in these systems, we show how their Hamiltonians can be represented, in each symmetry sector, by a transverse field Ising chain. Due to the presence of an extensive number of conserved quantities, even if the original system has no disorder, most of these symmetry sectors feature a quasi-…
We apply a generalized Kibble-Zurek out-of-equilibrium scaling ansatz to simulated annealing when approaching the spin-glass transition at temperature $T=0$ of the two-dimensional Ising model with random $J= \pm 1$ couplings. Analyzing the spin-glass order parameter and the excess energy as functions of the system size and the annealing velocity in Monte Carlo simulations with Metropolis dynamics, we find scaling where the energy relaxes slower than the spin-glass order parameter, i.e., there are two different dynamic exponents. The values of the exponents relating the relaxation time scales t…
