Traditional plasma physics has mainly focused on regimes characterized by high temperatures and low densities, for which quantum-mechanical effects have virtually no impact. However, recent technological advances (particularly on miniaturized semiconductor devices and nanoscale objects) have made it possible to envisage practical applications of plasma physics where the quantum nature of the particles plays a crucial role. Here, I shall review different approaches to the modeling of quantum effects in electrostatic collisionless plasmas. The full kinetic model is provided by the Wigner equation, which is the quantum analog of the Vlasov equation. The Wigner formalism is particularly attractive, as it recasts quantum mechanics in the familiar classical phase space, although this comes at the cost of dealing with negative distribution functions. Equivalently, the Wigner model can be expressed in terms of $N$ one-particle Schr{ö}dinger equations, coupled by Poisson's equation: this is the Hartree formalism, which is related to the `multi-stream' approach of classical plasma physics. In order to reduce the complexity of the above approaches, it is possible to develop a quantum fluid model by taking velocity-space moments of the Wigner equation. Finally, certain regimes at large excitation energies can be described by semiclassical kinetic models (Vlasov-Poisson), provided that the initial ground-state equilibrium is treated quantum-mechanically. The above models are validated and compared both in the linear and nonlinear regimes.
The collective production of electron-positron pairs by electrostatic waves in quantum plasmas is investigated. In particular, a semi-classical governing set of equation for a self-consistent treatment of pair creation by the Schwinger mechanism in a quantum plasma is derived.
The existence of two new low-frequency electrostatic modes in quantum dusty plasmas is pointed out. These modes can be useful to diagnose charged dust impurities in micro-electro-mechanical systems.
For quantum effects to be significant in plasmas it is often assumed that the temperature over density ratio must be small. In this paper we challenge this assumption by considering the contribution to the dynamics from the electron spin properties. As a starting point we consider a multicomponent plasma model, where electrons with spin up and spin down are regarded as different fluids. By studying the propagation of Alfvén wave solitons we demonstrate that quantum effects can survive in a relatively high-temperature plasma. The consequences of our results are discussed.
Sub-picosecond coincidence timing from nonlocal intensity interference of entangled photons allows quantum interferometry for plasmas. Using a warm plasma dispersion relation, we correlate phase measurement sensitivity with different plasma properties or physics mechanisms over 6 orders of magnitude. Due to $N^α$ ($α\leq -1/2$) scaling with the photon number $N$, quantum interferometry using entangled light can probe small signals in plasmas not previously accessible. As an example, it is predicted that plasmas will induce shifts to a Gaussian dip, a well-known quantum optics phenomenon that i…
A statistical multistream description of quantum plasmas is formulated, using the Wigner-Poisson system as dynamical equations. A linear stability analysis of this system is carried out, and it is shown that a Landau-like damping of plane wave perturbations occurs due to the broadening of the background Wigner function that arises as a consequence of statistical variations of the wave function phase. The Landau-like damping is shown to suppress instabilities of the one- and two-stream type.
A plasma becomes quantum when the quantum nature of its particles significantly affects its macroscopic properties. To answer the question of when the collective quantum plasma effects are important, a proper description of such effects is necessary. We consider here the most common methods of description of quantum plasma, along with the related assumptions and applicability limits. In particular, we analyze in detail the hydrodynamic description of quantum plasma, as well as discuss some kinetic features of analytic properties of linear dielectric response function in quantum plasma. We poin…
The quantum mechanical effect on the plasma two-stream instability is studied based on the dielectric function approach. The analysis suggests that the degenerate plasma relevant to the inertial confinement fusion behaves differently from classical plasmas when the electron drift velocity is comparable to the Fermi velocity. For high wave vector comparable to the Fermi wave vector, the degenerate quantum plasma has larger regime of the two-stream instabilities than the classical plasma. A regime, where the plasma waves with the frequency larger than 1.5 times of the Langmuir wave frequency bec…
Formulas for transversal conductance and dielectric permeability (dielectric function) in quantum Maxwell collisional plasma are deduced. The kinetic equation with collision integral in the form relaxation type is used.
Shielding effects in non-degenerate and degenerate plasmas are compared. A detailed derivation of the Wigner-Poisson system is provided for electrostatic quantum plasmas where relativistic, spin and collisional effects are not essential. Later a detailed derivation of a quantum hydrodynamic model starting from the Wigner-Poisson system is shown. The route for this derivation considers the eikonal decomposition of the one-body wavefunctions of the quantum statistical mixture. The merits and limitations of the resulting quantum hydrodynamic model are discussed.
The role of quantum tunneling effect in the electron accretion current onto a negatively charged grain immersed in isotropic plasma is analyzed, within the quasiclassic approximation, for different plasma electron distribution functions, plasma parameters, and grain sizes. It is shown that this contribution can be small (negligible) for relatively large (micron-sized) dust grains in plasmas with electron temperatures of the order of a few eV, but becomes important for nano-sized dust grains (tens to hundreds nm in diameter) in cold and ultracold plasmas (electron temperatures ~ tens to hundred…
Emerging possibilities for creating and studying novel plasma regimes, e.g. relativistic plasmas and dense systems, in a controlled laboratory environment also requires new modeling tools for such systems. This brings motivation for theoretical studies of the kinetic theory governing the dynamics of plasmas for which both relativistic and quantum effects occur simultaneously. Here, we investigate relativistic corrections to the Pauli Hamiltonian in the context of a scalar kinetic theory for spin-1/2 quantum plasmas. In particular, we formulate a quantum kinetic theory that takes such effects a…

Formulas for transverse conductance in quantum collisional plasma are deduced. The kinetic equation in momentum space in the relaxation approach is used. It is shown, that at Planck's constant tends to zero the derived formula transfers to the classical one. It is shown also, that when electron collision frequency tends to null (i.e. plasma becomes collisionless), the conductance formula transfers in the known formula inferred earlier by Lindhard.

It is shown, that at $\hbar\to 0$ the derived formula transfers to the classical one. It is shown also, that when values of dimensionless wave numbers are small, the conductance formula transfers in the known formula for classical non-degenerate plasmas.

Plasma state of matter can be studied in various types of situations. These studies are of great interest in Astrophysical objects like galaxies, accretion disk, neutron stars, etc, and laboratory plasma as well. Different objects demand different approaches to investigate the dynamics of the plasma. The relativistic effects in the motion of electrons in Quantum Plasma highly affect the characteristics of the solitary structure of the wave with two-temperature electrons. In this paper, considering the quantum hydrodynamic (QHD) model a dispersion relation is derived, and using standard perturb…
New type of quantum kinetic equations of the Fermi particles are derived. The Bogolyubov's type of dispersion relation, which is valid for the Bose fluid, is disclosed. Model of neutral Bose atoms in dense strongly coupled plasmas with attractive interaction is discussed. A set of fluid equations describing the quantum plasmas is obtained. Furthermore, the equation of state of a degenerate Fermi plasma is derived.

We report new attractive force between ions that are shielded by degenerate electrons in quantum plasmas. Specifically, we show that the electric potential around an isolated ion has a hard core negative part that resembles the Lennard-Jones (LJ)-type potential. Physically, the new electric potential is attributed to the consideration of the quantum statistical pressure, the quantum Bohm potential, as well as the electron exchange and electron correlations due to electron-1/2 spin within the framework of the quantum hydrodynamical description of quantum plasmas. The shape of the attractive pot…

It is shown that when collision frequency of plasma particles tends to zero (plasma passes to collisionless one), the deduced formula for dielectric function passes to the known Lindhard' formula for collisionless plasmas. It is shown that the deduced formula for dielectric permeability coincide…
Numerical modeling of radio-frequency waves in plasma with sufficiently high spatial and temporal resolution remains challenging even with modern computers. However, such simulations can be sped up using quantum computers in the future. Here, we propose how to do such modeling for cold plasma waves, in particular, for an X wave propagating in an inhomogeneous one-dimensional plasma. The wave system is represented in the form of a vector Schrödinger equation with a Hermitian Hamiltonian. Block-encoding is used to represent the Hamiltonian through unitary operations that can be implemented on a …
A multistream model for spinless electrons in a relativistic quantum plasma is introduced by means of a suitable fluid-like version of the Klein-Gordon-Maxwell system. The one and two-stream cases are treated in detail. A new linear instability condition for two-stream quantum plasmas is obtained, generalizing the previously known non-relativistic results. In both the one and two-stream cases, steady-state solutions reduce the model to a set of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations, which can be numerically solved, yielding a manifold of nonlinear periodic and soliton structures. T…

This study looks at the confinement effects of Aharonov-Bohm (AB) flux and magnetic fields, as well as topological defects in a quantum plasma, on the hydrogen atom. The joint effects show that the system is extremely attractive. Furthermore, as we've shown, the joint effect of the fields is greater than the sum of the individual effects, resulting in a significant change in the system's bound state energy. The magnetic field can be used as a control parameter or booster, whereas the topological defect and AB field are needed to hold the hydrogen atom in quantum plasmas at a low energy. The fi…
Quantum Computing promises accelerated simulation of certain classes of problems, in particular in plasma physics. With this in mind, the goal of this document is to provide a regularly up-to-date and thorough list of citations for those developing and applying these quantum computing approaches to experimental or theo…
This study presents the confinement influences of Aharonov-Bohm-flux (AB-flux), electric and magnetic fields directed along $z$-axis and encircled by quantum plasmas, on the hydrogen atom. The all-inclusive effects result to a strongly attractive system while the localizations of quantum levels change and the eigenvalues decrease. We find that, the combined effect of the fields is stronger than solitary effect and consequently, there is a substantial shift in the bound state energy of the system. We also find that to perpetuate a low-energy medium for hydrogen atom in quantum plasmas, strong e…
We discuss complete theory of spin-1/2 electron-positron quantum plasmas, when electrons and positrons move with velocities mach smaller than the speed of light. We derive a set of two fluid quantum hydrodynamic equations consisting of the continuity, Euler, spin (magnetic moment) evolution equations for each species. We explicitly include the Coulomb, spin-spin, Darwin and annihilation interactions. The annihilation interaction is the main topic of the paper. We consider contribution of the annihilation interaction in the quantum hydrodynamic equations and in spectrum of waves in magnetized e…

The effects of the quantum force associated with the Bohm potential and the combined effects of the classical as well as the spin-induced ponderomotive forces (CPF and SPF respectively) are taken into consideration. The latter modify the local plasma density in a self-consistent manner. The coupled …

It is shown also, that when the wave number tends to zero, quantum conductivity passes in the classical one. Graphic co…
This paper is devoted to studying of dispersion of waves in the magnetized plasma with the spin and exploring of new methods of the generation wave in the plasma. We consider the dispersion of waves, existed in the plasma in consequence of dynamic of the magnetic moments. It is shown there are nine new waves in the magnetized plasma because of the magnetic moments dynamic. We show there are instabilities at propagation of the neutron beam through the plasma. Increments of instabilities caused by neutron beam are calculated. For studying of this effects we generalize and use the method of the m…
Using Dirac equation together with the Wigner distribution function, the trembling motion, known as Zitterbewegung effect,of moving electrons in quasi-one-dimensional relativistic quantum plasma is theoretically investigated. The relativistic Wigner matrix is used to calculate the mean values of the position and velocity operators for a Dirac gas of electrons. It is found that the oscillatory behavior of measurable quantities could be associated with the Zitterbewegung effect which manifests itself as a damping interference pattern stemming from mixing the positive and negative dispersion modes of…
