We study a quantum cellular automaton (QCA) whose time-evolution is defined from global transition function of classical cellular automata (CA). In order to investigate natural transformations from CA to QCA, the present QCA includes CA with Wolfram's rule 150 and 105 as special cases. We firstly compute the time-evolution of the QCA and examine its statistical properties. As a basic statistical value, the probability of finding an active cell averaged over a spatial-temporal space is introduced, and the difference between CA and QCA is considered. In addition, it is shown that statistical properties in QCA are related to the classical trajectory in the configuration space.
Gauge-invariance is a fundamental concept in physics---known to provide the mathematical justification for all four fundamental forces. In this paper, we provide discrete counterparts to the main gauge theoretical concepts, directly in terms of Cellular Automata. More precisely, we describe a step-by-step gauging procedure to enforce local symmetries upon a given Cellular Automaton. We apply it to a simple Reversible Cellular Automaton for concreteness. From a Computer Science perspective, discretized gauge theories may be applied to numerical analysis, quantum simulation, fault-tolerant (quan…
Ergodicity breaking is observed in the blockade regime of Rydberg atoms arrays, in the form of low entanglement eigenstates known as scars, which fail to thermalize. The signature of these states persists in periodically driven systems, where they coexist with an extensive number of chaotic states. Here we investigate a quantum cellular automaton based on the classical rule that updates a site if its two neighbors are in the lower state. We show that the breaking of ergodicity extends to chaotic states. The dynamical breaking of ergodicity is controlled by chiral quasiparticle excitations whic…
We propose that a quantum particle in a potential in one space dimension can be described by a probabilistic cellular automaton. While the simple updating rule of the automaton is deterministic, the probabilistic description is introduced by a probability distribution over initial conditions. The proposed automaton involves right- and left-movers, jumping from one cell to a neighboring one. They change their direction of motion at each randomly distributed disorder or scattering point. The continuum limit of an infinite number of cells yields a Dirac equation, and in the non-relativistic limit…
We propose a new cellular automaton (CA), the Sweep Rule, which generalizes Toom's rule to any locally Euclidean lattice. We use the Sweep Rule to design a local decoder for the toric code in $d\geq 3$ dimensions, the Sweep Decoder, and rigorously establish a lower bound on its performance. We also numerically estimate the Sweep Decoder threshold for the three-dimensional toric code on the cubic and body-centered cubic lattices for phenomenological phase-flip noise. Our results lead to new CA decoders with provable error-correction thresholds for other topological quantum codes including the c…
We propose a discrete spacetime formulation of quantum electrodynamics in one-dimension (a.k.a the Schwinger model) in terms of quantum cellular automata, i.e. translationally invariant circuits of local quantum gates. These have exact gauge covariance and a maximum speed of information propagation. In this picture, the interacting quantum field theory is defined as a "convergent" sequence of quantum cellular automata, parameterized by the spacetime lattice spacing---encompassing the notions of continuum limit and renormalization, and at the same time providing a quantum simulation algorithm f…
Cellular automata have recently attracted a lot of attention as testbeds to explore the emergence of many-body quantum chaos and hydrodynamics. We consider the Rule 54 model, one of the simplest interacting integrable models featuring two species of quasiparticles (solitons), in the presence of an integrability-breaking perturbation that allows solitons to backscatter. We study the onset of thermalization and diffusive hydrodynamics in this model, compute perturbatively the diffusion constant of tracer particles, and comment on its relation to transport coefficients.
