The quantum theory of the mazer in the non-resonant case (a detuning between the cavity mode and the atomic transition frequencies is present) is written. The generalization from the resonant case is far from being direct. Interesting effects of the mazer physics are pointed out. In particular, it is shown that the cavity may slow down or speed up the atoms according to the sign of the detuning and that the induced emission process may be completely blocked by use of a positive detuning. It is also shown that the detuning adds a potential step effect not present at resonance and that the use of positive detunings defines a well-controlled cooling mechanism. In the special case of a mesa cavity mode function, generalized expressions for the reflection and transmission coefficients have been obtained. The general properties of the induced emission probability are finally discussed in the hot, intermediate and cold atom regimes. Comparison with the resonant case is given.
We refute in this Reply the criticisms made by M. Abdel-Aty [Phys. Rev. A 70, 047801 (2004)]. We show that none of them are founded and we demonstrate very explicitly what is wrong in the arguments developed by this author.
In a recent work, Bastin and Martin (B-M) [Phys. Rev. A 67, 053804 (2003)] have analyzed the quantum theory of the mazer in the off-resonant case. However, our analysis of this case refutes their claim by showing that their evaluation of the coupled equations for the off-resonant case is not satisfactory. The correct expression can be obtained by applying an appropriate formulae for the involved dressed-state parameters.
A short review of the theoretical studies of the cold atom micromaser (mazer) is presented. Existing models are then improved by considering more general working conditions. Especially, the mazer physics is investigated in the situation where a detuning between the cavity mode and the atomic transition frequency is present. Interesting new effects are pointed out. Especially, it is shown that the cavity may slow down or speed up the atoms according to the sign of the detuning and that the induced emission process may be completely blocked by use of a positive detuning. The transmission probabi…
We study the population trapping phenomenon for the one-photon mazer. With this intent, the mazer theory is written using the dressed-state coordinate formalism, simplifying the expressions for the atomic populations, the cavity photon statistics, and the reflection and transmission probabilities. Under the population trapping condition, evidence for new properties of the atomic scattering is given. Experimental issues and possible applications are discussed.
We present a study of collapse-revival patterns that appear in the changes of atomic populations induced by the interaction of ultracold two-level atoms with electromagnetic cavities in resonance with an $m$-photon transition of the atoms ($m$-photon mazer). In particular, sech$^2$ and gaussian cavity mode profiles are considered and differences in the collapse-revival patterns are reported. The quantum theory of the $m$-photon mazer is written in the framework of the dressed-state coordinate formalism. Simple expressions for the atomic populations, the cavity photon statistics, and the reflec…
Quantum fluctuations in the mazer are considered, arising either from the atomic motion or from the quantized intracavity field. Analytical results, for both the meza and the hyperbolic secant mode profile, predict for example an attenuation of tunneling resonances due to such fluctuations. The case of a Gaussian mode profile is studied numerically using a wave packet propagation approach. The method automatically takes into account fluctuations in the atomic motion and the dynamics is especially considered at or adjacent to a tunnel resonance. We find that the system evolution is greatly sens…
We present a novel approach for solving numerically one-dimensional scattering problems and apply it for computing the emission probability of an ultracold atom interacting with an arbitrary field mode of a high-$Q$ cavity. Our method is efficient, stable and succeeds when other numerical integration methods fail. It also replaces and improves advantageously the WKB approximation. The cases of sinusoidal, $\mathrm{sech}^2$ and Gaussian field modes are studied and compared. Divergences with previous works, where WKB was used, are found.
We examine the competition among one- and two-photon processes in an ultra-cold, three-level atom undergoing cascade transitions as a result of its interaction with a bimodal cavity. We show parameter domains where two-photon transitions are dominant and also study the effect of two-photon emission on the mazer action in the cavity. The two-photon emission leads to the loss of detailed balance and therefore we obtain the photon statistics of the cavity field by the numerical integration of the master equation. The photon distribution in each cavity mode exhibits sub- and super- Poissonian beha…
The interaction of a quantized field with three-level atoms in $Λ$ configuration inside a two-mode cavity is analyzed in the small noise approximation. The atoms are in a two-photon detuning with respect to the carriers of the field. We calculate the stationary quadrature noise spectrum of the field outside the cavity in the case where the input probe field is a squeezed state and the input pump field is a coherent state. The mean value of the field is unaltered in all the analysis: the atoms shows electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The effect of the atoms' base level decoherence …
We study several extensions of the single-photon, cavity-mediated quantum logical gates recently proposed by Koshino, Ishizaka and Nakamura: to a double-sided cavity configuration, to the case where the two atomic ground states are nondegenerate, and to include nonadiabatic corrections. Our analysis can be used to estimate the effects of various imperfections, and to prepare the way for a proof-of-principle demonstration with present technology. An interesting result is that the leading correction to the adiabatic approximation can be made to vanish for a suitable choice of detunings, provided…
Taking the non-Markovian effect into account, we study how to store a single photon of arbitrary temporal shape in a single atom coupled to an optical cavity. Our model applies to Raman transitions in three-level atoms with one branch of the transition controlled by a driving pulse, and the other coupled to the cavity. For any couplings of input field to the optical cavity and detunings of the atom from the driving pulse and cavity, we extend the input-output relation from Markovian dynamics to non-Markovian one. For most possible photon shapes, we derive an analytic expression for the driving…

We study the behavior of the group velocity of light under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a Doppler broadened medium. Specifically, we show how the group delay (or group velocity) of probe and generated Stokes fields depends on the one-photon detuning of drive and probe fields. We find that for atoms in a buffer gas the group velocity decreases with positive one-photon detuning of the drive fields, and increases when the fields are red detuned. This dependence is counter-intuitive to what would be expected if the one-photon detuning resulted in an interaction o…
We investigate the light-matter interaction of a quantum dot with the electromagnetic field in a lossy microcavity and calculate emission spectra for non-zero detuning and dephasing. It is found that dephasing shifts the intensity of the emission peaks for non-zero detuning. We investigate the characteristics of this intensity shifting effect and offer it as an explanation for the non-vanishing emission peaks at the cavity frequency found in recent experimental work.
The quantum theory of the cold atom micromaser including the effects of gravity is established in the general case where the cavity mode and the atomic transition frequencies are detuned. We show that atoms which classically would not reach the interaction region are able to emit a photon inside the cavity. The system turns out to be extremely sensitive to the detuning and in particular to its sign. A method to solve the equations of motion for non resonant atom-field interaction and arbitrary cavity modes is presented.
The unconditionally squeezing of the collective spin of an atomic ensemble in a laser driven optical cavity (I. D. Leroux, M. H. Schleier-Smith, and V. Vuletic, Phys. Rev. Lett 104, 073602 (2010)) is studied and analyzed theoretically. Surprisingly, we find that the largely detuned driving laser can improve the scaling of cavity squeezing from $S^{-2/5}$ to $S^{-2/3}$, where S is the total atomic spin. Moreover, we also demonstrate that the experimental imperfection of photon scattering into free space can be efficiently suppressed by detuning.
We consider a semiconductor quantum well in a microcavity driven by coherent light and coupled to a squeezed vacuum reservoir. By systematically solving the pertinent quantum Langevin equations in the strong coupling and low excitation regimes, we study the effect of exciton-photon detuning, external coherent light, and the squeezed vacuum reservoir on vacuum Rabi splitting and on quantum statistical properties of the light emitted by the quantum well. We show that the exciton-photon detuning leads to a shift in polariton resonance frequencies and a decrease in fluorescence intensity. We also …
We characterize a source of photon pairs based on cascade decay in a cold Rb-87 ensemble. This source is particularly suited to generate of photons for interaction with Rb-87 based atomic systems. We experimentally investigate the dependence of pair generation rate, single photon heralding efficiency, and bandwidth as a function of the number of atoms, detuning and intensity of the pump beams. The observed power and detuning behaviors can be explained by the steady state solution of an established three-level model of an atom. Measurements presented here provide a useful insight on the optimiz…
We observe a narrow, isolated, two-photon absorption resonance in Rb for large one-photon detuning in the presence of a buffer gas. In the absence of buffer gas, a standard Lambda configuration of two laser frequencies gives rise to electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) for all values of one-photon detuning throughout the inhomogeneously (Doppler) broadened line. However, when a buffer gas is added and the one-photon detuning is comparable to or greater than the Doppler width, an absorption resonance appears instead of the usual EIT resonance. We also observe large negative group dela…
Using the algebraic dynamical method, the dynamics of entanglement in an atom-field bipartite system in a mixed state is investigated. The atomic center-ofmass motion and the field-mode structure are also included in this system. We find that the larger values of the detuning and the average photon number, the smaller fluctuation of the entanglement, but the period for the evolution of the entanglement doesn't increase accordingly; It is also found that the fluctuation of the entanglement varies slightly with the atomic motion and oscillates fast with the value of the fieldmode structure and t…
In this paper, we investigate, phonon effects on the optical properties of a spherical quantum dot. For this purpose, we consider the interaction of a spherical quantum dot with classical and quantum fields while the exciton of quantum dot interacts with a solid state reservoir. We show that phonons strongly affect the Rabi oscillations and optical coherence on first picoseconds of dynamics. We consider the quantum statistics of emitted photons by quantum dot and we show that these photons are anti-bunched and obey the sub-Poissonian statistics. In addition, we examine the effects of detuning …
Phase diagrams of the micromaser system are mapped out in terms of the physical parameters at hand like the atom cavity transit time, the atom-photon frequency detuning, the number of thermal photons and the probability for a pump atom to be in its excited state. Critical fluctuations are studied in terms of correlation measurements on atoms having passed through the micromaser or on the microcavity photons themselves. At sufficiently large values of the detuning we find a ``twinkling'' mode of the micromaser system. Detailed properties of the trapping states are also presented.
We investigate exciton emission of quantum well embedded in a semiconductor microcavity. The analytical expressions of the light intensity for the cases of excitonic number state and coherent state are presented by using secular approximation. Our results show that the effective exciton-exciton interaction leads to the appearance of collapse and revival of the light intensity. The revival time is twice compared the coherent state case with that of the number state. The dissipation of the exciton-polariton lowers the revival amplitude but does not alter the revival time. The influences of the d…
As photons do not interact with each other, it is interesting to ask whether photonic systems can be modified to exhibit the phases characteristic of strongly coupled many-body systems. We demonstrate how a Mott insulator type of phase of excitations can arise in an array of coupled electromagnetic cavities, each of which is coupled resonantly to a {\em single} two level system (atom/quantum dot/Cooper pair) and can be individually addressed from outside. In the Mott phase each atom-cavity system has the same integral number of net polaritonic (atomic plus photonic) excitations with photon blo…
The elastic scattering peak of a resonantly driven two-level system has been argued to provide narrow-linewidth antibunched photons. Although independent measurements of spectral width on the one hand and antibunching on the other hand do seem to show that this is the case, a joint measurement reveals that only one or the other of these attributes can be realised in the direct emission. We discuss a scheme which interferes the emission with a laser to produce simultaneously single photons of subnatural linewidth. In particular, we consider the effect of dephasing and of the detuning between th…
In this contribution, we study a single Cooper pair box interacts with a single cavity mode. We show the roles played by the detuning parameters and charged capacities on the degree of entanglement. For large values of the detuning parameter the survival entanglement increases on the expanse of the degree of entanglement. We generate a maximum entangled state and use it to perform the original teleportation protocol. The fidelity of the teleportated state is increased with decreasing the detuning parameter and the number of photon inside the cavity.
We consider a micromaser model to study the influence of Dicke superradiance in the context of the one-atom maser. The model involves a microwave cavity into which two-level Rydberg atoms are pumped in pairs. We consider a random pump mechanism which allows the presence of at most one pair of atoms in the cavity at any time. We analyze the differences between the present system, called the Dicke micromaser, and an equivalently pumped conventional one-atom micromaser. These differences are attributed to the Dicke cooperativity in the two-atom system. We also show that the two-atom Dicke microma…
We study optical bistable behavior of a Rydberg electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) atomic medium in a unidirectional optical ring-cavity. Due to strong van del Waal (vdW) interactions between the atoms, both optical nonlinear dispersion and nonlinear absorption coefficients are enhanced substantially. Under the condition of two-photon on resonance, we show that probe one-photon detuning can change the phase of the third order nonlinearity coefficient, which tunes the character of the optical bistability within different ratios of dispersive and absorptive types. This enables the si…
The possibility of storage of quantum information with photons is studied in the case of resonant transitions via many close lying exciton levels in a solid with impurity Lambda-atoms. The upper levels of the impurity atom form resonant Fano states, similar to the autoionization atomic states, due to the configuration interaction with the continuum of the exciton band. In this case slowing of light pulses is shown to be realistic, in the presence of the control field, down to the group velocity much lower than that in vacuum. The possibility of storage and reconstruction of a quantum pulse is …
We explore theoretically the single-photon transport in a single-mode waveguide that is coupled to a hybrid atom-optomechanical system in a strong optomechanical coupling regime. Using a full quantum real-space approach, transmission and reflection coefficients of the propagating single-photon in the waveguide are ob- tained. The influences of atom-cavity detuning and the dissipation of atom on the transport are also studied. Intriguingly, the obtained spectral features can reveal the strong light-matter interaction in this hybrid system.
We provide a theoretical framework to study the effect of dephasing on the quantum indistinguishability of single photons emitted from a coherently driven cavity QED $Λ$-system. We show that with a large excited-state detuning, the photon indistinguishability can be drastically improved provided that the fluctuation rate of the noise source affecting the excited state is fast compared with the photon emission rate. In some cases a spectral filter is required to realize this improvement, but the cost in efficiency can be made small.
We demonstrate the effects of cavity quantum electrodynamics for a quantum dot coupled to a photonic molecule, consisting of a pair of coupled photonic crystal cavities. We show anti-crossing between the quantum dot and the two super-modes of the photonic molecule, signifying achievement of the strong coupling regime. From the anti-crossing data, we estimate the contributions of both mode-coupling and intrinsic detuning to the total detuning between the super-modes. Finally, we also show signatures of off-resonant cavity-cavity interaction in the photonic molecule.
We calculate the one- and two-photon scattering matrices of a pair of collocated non-identical two-level atoms coupled to a waveguide. We show that by proper choice of a two-photon input, the background fluorescence by the atoms may be completely quenched, as a result of quantum interference, and that when the atoms' detuning is smaller than their linewidths, extremely narrow fluorescence features emerge. Furthermore, the system emits a two-photon bound state which can display spatial oscillations/quantum beats, and can be tuned from bunched to anti-bunched statistics as the total photon energ…
We study the entanglement properties of two three-level Rydberg atoms passing through a single-mode cavity. The interaction of an atom with the cavity field allows the atom to make a transition from the upper most (lower most) to the lower most (upper most) level by emission (absoprtion) of two photons via the middle level. We employ an effective Hamiltonian that describes the system with a Stark shifted two-photon atomic transition. We compute the entanglement of formation of the joint two-atom state as a function of Rabi angle $gt$. It is shown that the Stark shift can be used to enhance the…
In the present work, we derive a formalism that can be used to predict and interpret the time structure and achievable visibilities for two-photon interference (TPI) experiments using photons from two separate sources. The treatment particularly addresses photons stemming from solid state quantum emitters, which are often subject to pure dephasing (PD) and spectral diffusion (SD). Therefore, it includes the impact of phase- and emission frequency-jitter besides the influence of differing radiative lifetimes and a relative spectral detuning. While the treatment is mainly aimed at interference e…
We present the design and implementation of a trapped ion cavity QED system. A single ytterbium ion is confined by a micron-scale ion trap inside a 2 mm optical cavity. The ion is coherently pumped by near resonant laser light while the cavity output is monitored as a function of pump intensity and cavity detuning. We observe a Purcell enhancement of scattered light into the solid angle subtended by the optical cavity, as well as a three-peak structure arising from strongly driving the atom. This system can be integrated into existing atom{photon quantum network protocols and is a pathway towa…
We propose to mechanically control photon blockades (PB) in an optomechanical system with driving oscillators. We show that by tuning the mechanical driving parameters we achieve selective single-photon blockade (1PB) or two-photon blockade (2PB) as well as simultaneous 1PB and 2PB at the same frequency. This mechanical engineering of 1PB and 2PB can be understood from the anharmonic energy levels due to the modulation of the mechanical driving. In contrast to the optomechanical systems without any mechanical driving featuring PB only for specific optical detuning, our results can be useful fo…
We performed quantum manipulations of the multi-level spin system S=5/2 of a Mn$^{2+}$ ion, by means of a two-tone pulse drive. The detuning between the excitation and readout radio frequency pulses allows one to select the number of photons involved in a Rabi oscillation as well as increase the frequency of this nutation. Thus detuning can lead to a resonant multi-photon process. Our analytical model for a two-photon process as well as a numerical generalization fit well the experimental findings, with implications in the use of multi-level spin systems as tunable solid state qubits.
We investigate quantum nonlinear effects at a level of individual quanta in a double tripod atom-light coupling scheme involving two atomic Rydberg states. In such a scheme the slow light coherently coupled to strongly interacting Rydberg states represents a two-component or spinor light. The scheme provides additional possibilities for the control and manipulation of light quanta. A distinctive feature of the proposed setup is that it combines the spin-orbit coupling for the spinor slow light with an interaction between the photons, enabling generation of the second probe beam even when two-p…
A major challenge in generating single photons with a single emitter is to excite the emitter while avoiding laser leakage into the collection path. Ideally, any scheme to suppress this leakage should not result in a loss in efficiency of the single-photon source. Here, we investigate a scheme in which a single emitter, a semiconductor quantum dot, is embedded in a microcavity. The scheme exploits the splitting of the cavity mode into two orthogonally-polarised modes: one mode is used for excitation, the other for collection. By linking experiment to theory, we show that the best population in…
Raman process is used for generation of nonclassical states and subsequent applications due to its simplicity. In view of the experimental feasibility of the off-resonant Raman process at single photon level useful in long distance quantum communication and quantum memory, we perform here a detailed study of possibility of generation of nonclassical states under off-resonance conditions. Specifically, we have studied nonclassicality in the off-resonant Raman process with the help of a characteristic function written using more general solution than the conventional short-time solution under co…
Entangled state, as an essential tool in quantum information processing, may be generated through the interaction between light and matter in cavity quantum electrodynamics. In this paper, we study the interaction between two two-level atoms and a two-mode field in an optical cavity enclosed by a medium with Kerr nonlinearity in the presence of detuning parameter and Stark effect. It is assumed that atom-field coupling and third-order susceptibility of the Kerr medium depend on the intensity of light. In order to investigate the dynamics of the introduced system, we obtain the exact analytical…
A two-level system interacting with a cavity field is an important model for investigating the photon blockade (PB) effect. Most work on this topic has been based on the assumption that the atomic transition frequency is resonant with the fundamental mode frequency of the cavity. We relax this constraint and reexamine PB in a more general atom--cavity system with arbitrary atomic and cavity detunings from a driving field. The results show that when the signs of the atomic and cavity detunings are the same, PB occurs only in the strong-coupling regime, but for opposite signs of the atomic and c…
We propose a reliable scheme to recover the conventional photon blockade effect in the dispersive Jaynes-Cummings model, which describes a two-level atom coupled to a single-mode cavity field in the large-detuning regime. This is achieved by introducing a transversal driving to the atom and then photonic nonlinearity is obtained. The eigenenergy spectrum of the system is derived analytically and the photon blockade effect is confirmed by numerically calculating the photon-number distributions and equal-time second-order correlation function of the cavity field in the presence of system dissipa…
Here we analyse cavity-mediated laser cooling for an experimental setup with an external trap which strongly confines the motion of a particle in the direction of the cavity axis. It is shown that the stationary state phonon number exhibits three sharp minima as a function of the atom-cavity detuning due to a direct atom-phonon-photon coupling term in the system Hamiltonian. These resonances have the same origin as the Mollow triplet in the resonance fluorescence of a laser-driven atomic system. It is shown that a laser-Rabi frequency-dependent atom-cavity detuning yields the lowest stationary…
We present a detailed analysis of strongly driven spontaneous four-wave mixing in a lossy integrated microring resonator side-coupled to a channel waveguide. A nonperturbative, analytic solution within the undepleted pump approximation is developed for a cw pump input of arbitrary intensity. In the strongly driven regime self- and cross-phase modulation, as well as multi-pair generation, lead to a rich variety of power-dependent effects; the results are markedly different than in the low power limit. The photon pair generation rate, single photon spectrum, and joint spectral intensity (JSI) di…
