We define a new quantity called refbit, which allows one to quantify the resource of sharing a reference frame in quantum communication protocols. By considering both asymptotic and nonasymptotic protocols we find relations between refbits and other communication resources. We also consider the same resources in encoded, reference-frame independent, form. This allows one to rephrase and unify previous work on phase references, reference frames, and superselection rules.

Quantifying Quantum Resource Sharing

Entanglement is a key resource of quantum science for tasks that require it to be shared among participants. Within atomic, condensed matter and photonic many-body systems the distribution and sharing of entanglement is of particular importance for information processing by progressively larger and larger quantum networks. Sharing nonfungible information requires shared nonfungible information

We show that sharing a quantum reference frame requires sharing measurement operators that identify the reference frame in addition to operators that measure its state. Observers restricted to finite resources cannot, in general, operationally determine that they share such operators. Uncertainty about whether system-identification operators are shared induces decoherence.

Experimental demonstration of robust entanglement distribution over reciprocal noisy channels assisted by a counter-propagating classical reference light

We experimentally demonstrate a proposal [Phys. Rev. A 87, 052325 (2013)] of a scheme for robust distribution of polarization entangled photon pairs over collective noisy channels having the reciprocity. Although the scheme employs the robustness of two qubit decoherence-free subspace, by utilizing the forward propagation of one half of the entangled photons and the backward propagation of a classical reference light, it achieves an entanglement-sharing rate proportional to the transmittance of the quantum channel for the signal photon. Changing quantum reference frames

We consider the process of changing reference frames in the case where the reference frames are quantum systems. We find that, as part of this process, decoherence is necessarily induced on any quantum system described relative to these frames. We explore this process with examples involving reference frames for phase and orientation. Quantifying the effect of changing quantum reference frames serves as a first step in developing a relativity principle for theories in which all objects including reference frames are necessarily quantum.

Reliable experimental quantification of bipartite entanglement without reference frames

Simply and reliably detecting and quantifying entanglement outside laboratory conditions will be essential for future quantum information technologies.
