We perform a quantum mechanical analysis of the pendular cavity, using the positive-P representation, showing that the quantum state of the moving mirror, a macroscopic object, has noticeable effects on the dynamics. This system has previously been proposed as a candidate for the quantum-limited measurement of small displacements of the mirror due to radiation pressure, for the production of states with entanglement between the mirror and the field, and even for superposition states of the mirror. However, when we treat the oscillating mirror quantum mechanically, we find that it always oscillates, has no stationary steady-state, and exhibits uncertainties in position and momentum which are typically larger than the mean values. This means that previous linearised fluctuation analyses which have been used to predict these highly quantum states are of limited use. We find that the achievable accuracy in measurement is far worse than the standard quantum limit due to thermal noise, which, for typical experimental parameters, is overwhelming even at 2 mK.
We study the phenomena that arise in the transverse structure of electromagnetic field impinging on a linear Fabry-Perot cavity with an oscillating end mirror. We find quantum correlations among transverse modes which can be considered as a signature of their entanglement.
We show that a cavity optomechanical system formed by a mechanical resonator simultaneously coupled to two modes of an optical cavity can be used for the implementation of a deterministic quantum phase gate between optical qubits associated with the two intracavity modes. The scheme is realizable for sufficiently strong single-photon optomechanical coupling in the resolved sideband regime, and is robust against cavity losses.
We propose a scheme to manipulate quantum correlation of output lights from two sides of a cavity by phase control. A probe laser is set to split into two beams in an interferometer with a relative phase in two arms which drive the cavity mode in opposite directions along cavity axis, individually. This phase, here named as driving-field phase, is important to build up quantum correlation in HBT (Hanbury Brown-Twiss) setup. Three control lasers propagate vertically to the cavity axis and drive the corresponding atomic transitions with a closed-loop phase. This type of closed-loop phase has bee…
New feasible cavity QED experiment is proposed to analyse reversible quantum decoherence in consequence of quantum complementarity and entanglement. Utilizing the phase selective manipulations with enviroment, it is demonstrated how the complementarity particularly induces a preservation of visibility, whereas quantum decoherence is more progressive due to pronounced entanglement between system and enviroment. This effect can be directly observed using the proposed cavity QED measurements.
We present a feasible scheme to investigate the geometric phase for an atom trapped in an optical cavity induced by the effective decay process due to cavity photon loss. The cavity mode, together with the external driving fields, acts as the engineered environment of the atom. When the parameters of the reservoir is adiabatically and cyclically changed, the system initially in the nontrivial dark state of the effective Lindblad operator undergoes a cyclic evolution and acquires a geometric phase. The geometric phase can be observed with the atomic Ramsey interference oscillation in the decohe…
We propose a theoretical scheme to realize a sensitive amplification of quantum discord (QD) between two atomic qubits via a cavity-Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) system which was used to firstly realize the Dicke quantum phase transition (QPT) [Nature 464, 1301 (2010)]. It is shown that the influence of the cavity-BEC system upon the two qubits is equivalent to a phase decoherence environment. It is found that QPT in the cavity-BEC system is the physical mechanism of the sensitive QD amplification.
An extensive characterization of high finesse optical cavities used in cavity QED experiments is described. Different techniques in the measurement of the loss and phase shifts associated with the mirror coatings are discussed and their agreement shown. Issues of cavity field mode structure supported by the dielectric coatings are related to our effort to achieve the strongest possible coupling between an atom and the cavity.
We propose a scheme for realizing a two-qubit controlled phase gate via an unconventional geometric phase with two nonresonant quantum dots trapped in a photonic crystal cavity. In this system, the quantum dots simultaneously interact with a large detuned cavity mode and strong driving classical light fields. During the gate operation, the quantum dots undergo no transitions, while the cavity mode is displaced along a closed path in the phase space. In this way, the system can acquire geometric phases conditional upon the states of the quantum dots. After implementing single-qubit operations, …
We investigate the quantum interference effects of single photon transfer in two-atom cavity system caused by external excitation phase. In the proposed system, two identical atoms (with different positions in the optical cavity) are firstly prepared into a timed state by an external single photon field. During the excitation, the atoms grasp different phases which depend on the spatial positions of the atoms in the cavity. Due to strong resonant interaction between two atoms and optical cavity mode the absorbed input photon can be efficiently transferred from the atoms to the resonant cavity …
We propose a scheme to generate nonclassical states of a quantum system, which is composed of the one-dimensional trapped ion motion and a single cavity field mode. We show that two-mode SU(2) Schrödinger-cat states, entangled coherent states, two-mode squeezed vacuum states and their superposition can be generated. If the vibration mode and the cavity mode are used to represent separately a qubit, a quantum phase gate can be implemented.
We propose a method for analyzing Berry phase for a multi-qubit system of superconducting charge qubits interacting with a microwave field. By suitably choosing the system parameters and precisely controlling the dynamics, novel connection found between the Berry phase and entanglement creations.
We apply the stochastic master equations (quantum filter) derived by Gough et al. (Proc. 50th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, 2011) to a system consisting of a cavity driven by a multimode single photon field. In particular, we analyse the conditional dynamics for the problem of cross phase modulation in a doubly resonant cavity. Through the exact integration of the stochastic equations, our results reveal features of the problem unavailable from previous models.
A scheme for implementing 2-qubit quantum controlled phase gate (QCPG) is proposed with two superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) in a cavity. The gate operations are realized within the two lower flux states of the SQUIDs by using a quantized cavity field and classical microwave pulses. Our scheme is achieved without any type of measurement, does not use the cavity mode as the data bus and only requires a very short resonant interaction of the SQUID-cavity system. As an application of the QCPG operation, we also propose a scheme for generating the cluster states of many SQUIDs…
The Dicke model consisting of an ensemble of two-state atoms interacting with a single quantized mode of the electromagnetic field exhibits a zero-temperature phase transition at a critical value of the dipole coupling strength. We propose a scheme based on multilevel atoms and cavity-mediated Raman transitions to realise an effective Dicke system operating in the phase transition regime. Output light from the cavity carries signatures of the critical behavior which is analyzed for the thermodynamic limit where the number of atoms is very large.
We propose a scheme to implement quantum phase gate for two $Λ$ ions trapped in optical cavity. It is shown that quantum phase gate can be implemented by applying a laser addressing to a single ions in strongly detuned optical cavity. We further demonstrate that geometric quantum phase gate can be implemented by introducing a auxiliary ground state.
We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate coherence phenomena in optical parametric amplification inside a cavity. The mode splitting in transmission spectra of phase-sensitive optical parametric amplifier is observed. Especially, we show a very narrow dip and peak, which are the shape of $δ$ function, appear in the transmission profile. The origin of the coherence phenomenon in this system is the interference between the harmonic pump field and the subharmonic seed field in cooperation with dissipation of the cavity.
Cavity-mediated two-qubit gates, for example between solid-state spins, are attractive for quantum network applications. We propose three schemes to implement a controlled phase-flip gate mediated by a cavity. The main advantage of all these schemes is the possibility to perform them using a cavity with high cooperativity, but not in the strong coupling regime. We calculate the fidelity of each scheme in detail, taking into account the most important realistic imperfections, and compare them to highlight the optimal conditions for each scheme. Using these results, we discuss which quantum syst…
We propose a way to realize a multiqubit tunable phase gate of one qubit simultaneously controlling n target qubits with atoms in cavity QED. In this proposal, classical pulses interact with atoms outside a cavity only, thus the experimental challenge of applying a pulse to an intra-cavity single atom without affecting other atoms in the same cavity is avoided. Because of employing a first-order large detuning, the gate can be performed fast when compared with the use of a second-order large detuning. Furthermore, the gate operation time is independent of the number of qubits. This proposal is…
We describe a tunable-cavity QED architecture with an rf SQUID phase qubit inductively coupled to a single-mode, resonant cavity with a tunable frequency that allows for both microwave readout of tunneling and dispersive measurements of the qubit. Dispersive measurement is well characterized by a three-level model, strongly dependent on qubit anharmonicity, qubit-cavity coupling and detuning. A tunable cavity frequency provides a way to strongly vary both the qubit-cavity detuning and coupling strength, which can reduce Purcell losses, cavity-induced dephasing of the qubit, and residual bus co…
We present a theoretical study of the phase noise, intensity and quadrature squeezing power spectra of the transmitted field of a driven optical cavity containing an interacting one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. We show how the pattern of the output power spectrum of the cavity changes due to the nonlinear effect of atomic collisions. Furthermore, it is shown that due to a one-to-one correspondence between the splitting of the peaks in the phase noise power spectrum of the cavity output field and the \textit{s}-wave scattering frequency of the atom-atom interaction, one can measure the…
We consider N identical two-level atoms coupled to an optical cavity, which is coherently driven by an external field. In the limit of small atomic excitation, the reflection and transmission coefficients for both fields and intensities are calculated analytically. In addition, the frequency content of the cavity field and hence also the emission spectrum of the cavity is determined. It is discussed in particular how individual collisional dephasing and common atomic energy-level fluctuations prevent the cavity field from being in a coherent state, which in turn affects the outgoing fields.
We propose how to realize a three-step controlled-phase gate of one superconducting qubit simultaneously controlling n qubits selected from N qubits in a cavity (1<n<N). The operation time of this gate is independent of the number n of qubits involved in the gate operation. This phase gate controlling at once n qubits is insensitive to the initial state of the cavity mode and can be used to produce an analogous CNOT gate simultaneously acting on n qubits.
Recent studies of quantum phase transitions in coupled atom-cavity arrays have focused on the similarities between such systems and the Bose-Hubbard model. However, the bipartite nature of the atom-cavity systems that make up the array introduces some differences. In order to examine the unique features of the coupled-cavity system, the behavior of a simple two-site model is studied over a wide range of parameters. Four regions are identified, in which the ground state of the system may be classified as either a polaritonic insulator, a photonic superfluid, an atomic insulator, or a polaritoni…
Squeezed vacuum field can be amplified or deamplified when it is injected, as the signal beam, into a phase-sensitive optical parametric amplifier (OPA) inside an optical cavity. The spectral features of the reflected quantized signal field are controlled by the relative phase between the injected squeezed vacuum field and the pump field for the OPA. The experimental results demonstrate coherent phenomena of OPA in the quantum regime, and show phase-sensitive manipulations of quantum fluctuations for quantum information processing.
The dynamics of the Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian is studied in the semiclassical limit by reducing it to quantum normal form and deriving the phase space dynamics of classically smooth observables. The resulting systematic semiclassical approximation is used to analyze the Rabi oscillations of a photon wave packet revealing subtle consequences of the uncertainty principle.
We propose a scheme to realize quantum controlled phase flip (CPF) between two rare earth ions embedded in respective microsphere cavity via interacting with a single-photon pulse in sequence. The numerical simulations illuminate that the CPF gate between ions is robust and scalable with extremely high fidelity and low error rate. Our scheme is more applicable than other schemes presented before based on current laboratory cavity-QED technology, and it is possible to be used as an applied unit gate in future quantum computation and quantum communication.
We study the general-setting quantum geometric phase acquired by a particle in a vibrating cavity. Solving the two-level theory with the rotating-wave approximation and the SU(2) method, we obtain analytic formulae that give excellent descriptions of the geometric phase, energy, and wavefunction of the resonating system. In particular, we observe a sudden $π$-jump in the geometric phase when the system is in resonance. We found similar behaviors in the geometric phase of a spin-1/2 particle in a rotating magnetic field, for which we developed a geometrical model to help visualize its evolution…
We study Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering properties of quantum phases in the generalized Dicke model (GDM) generated by a cavity Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) doped with a single impurity. It is shown that the normal and superradiant phases of the GDM exhibit much rich EPR steerability. In the normal phase, there exist one-way EPR steering from the cavity field (condensed atoms) to condensed atoms (the cavity field). In the superradiant phase, there is either one-way or two-way EPR steering for the cavity field and condensed atoms. It is found that the single impurity can act as a sing…
Very low intensity and phase fluctuations are present in a bright light field such as a laser beam. These subtle quantum fluctuations may be used to encode quantum information. Although intensity is easily measured with common photodetectors, accessing the phase information requires interference experiments. We introduce one such technique, the rotation of the noise ellipse of light, which employs an optical cavity to achieve the conversion of phase to intensity fluctuations. We describe the quantum noise of light and how it can be manipulated by employing an optical resonance technique and co…
Cross-phase modulation at the single-photon level has a wide variety of fundamental applications in quantum optics including the generation of macroscopic entangled states. Here we describe a practical method for producing a weak cross-phase modulation at the single-photon level using metastable xenon in a high finesse cavity. We estimate the achievable phase shift and give a brief update on the experimental progress towards its realization. A single-photon cross-phase modulation of approximately 20 milliradians is predicted by both a straightforward perturbation theory calculation and a numer…
Cavity opto-mechanical cooling via radiation pressure dynamical backaction enables ground state cooling of mechanical oscillators, provided the laser exhibits sufficiently low phase noise. Here, we investigate and measure the excess phase noise of widely tunable external cavity diode lasers, which have been used in a range of recent nano-optomechanical experiments, including ground-state cooling. We report significant excess frequency noise, with peak values on the order of 10^7 rad^2 Hz near 3.5 GHz, attributed to the diode lasers' relaxation oscillations. The measurements reveal that even at…
The phase dependence of the cavity quantum dynamics in a driven equidistant three-level ladder-type system found in a quantum well structure with perpendicular transition dipoles is investigated in the good cavity limit. The pumping laser phases are directly transferred to the superposed amplitudes of the cavity-quantum-well interaction. Their phase difference may be tuned in order to obtain destructive quantum interferences. Therefore, the cavity field vanishes although the emitter continues to be pumped.
We study the dynamics of an optical mode in a cavity with a movable mirror subject to quantum Brownian motion. We study the phase noise power spectrum of the output light, and we describe the mirror Brownian motion, which is responsible for the thermal noise contribution, using the quantum Langevin approach. We show that the standard quantum Langevin equations, supplemented with the appropriate non-Markovian correlation functions, provide an adequate description of Brownian motion.
We propose a scheme to realize the two-axis counter-twisting spin-squeezing Hamiltonian inside an optical cavity with the aid of phase-locked atom-photon coupling. By careful analysis and extensive simulation, we demonstrate that our scheme is robust against dissipation caused by cavity loss and atomic spontaneous emission, and it can achieve significantly higher squeezing than one axis twisting. We further show how our idea can be extended to generate two-mode spin-squeezed states in two coupled cavities. Due to its easy implementation and high tunability, our scheme is experimentally realiza…
We propose a method to generate an optical Schrödinger-cat-like state in a cavity in a substantial decoherence regime. Even when the cavity decay rate is considerably large, a cat-like state can be generated in a laser-like setting if the gain for the field is larger than the loss. Under the condition that opposite-phase atomic dipoles repeatedly traverse the cavity, the cavity field converges to a squeezed vacuum state in a steady state. A Schrödinger-cat-like state is then generated when a single photon decay occurs. The phase-space distribution of the cat state can be revealed in homodyne d…
We propose how to realize a three-step controlled-phase gate of one qubit simultaneously controlling $n$ qubits in a cavity or coupled to a resonator. The $n$ two-qubit controlled-phase gates, forming this multiqubit phase gate, can be performed simultaneously. The operation time of this phase gate is independent of the number $n$ of qubits. This phase gate controlling at once $n$ qubits is insensitive to the initial state of the cavity mode and can be used to produce an analogous CNOT gate simultaneously acting on $n$ qubits. We present two alternative approaches to implement this gate. One a…
Squeezing ensemble of spins provides a way to surpass the standard quantum limit (SQL) in quantum metrology and test the fundamental physics as well, and therefore attracts broad interest. Here we propose an experimentally accessible protocol to squeeze a giant ensemble of spins via the geometric phase control. Using the cavity-assisted Raman transitions in a double $Λ$-type system, we realize an effective Dicke model. Under the condition of vanishing effective spin transition frequency, we find a particular evolution time where the cavity decouples from the spins and the spin ensemble is sque…
The transparence of a laser-driven optical resonator containing an ensemble of cold atoms can have two distinct, robust states. Atoms in their initially prepared pure state blockade the transmission by detuning the cavity mode from the laser drive. The interacting system can, however, transition into an uncoupled state via a non-linear channel opening up in a critical run-away process toward a transparent bright phase. The experiment enables a time-resolved observation of the dynamical transmission blockade breakdown phase transition as well as quantification of enhanced fluctuations in the cr…
The dipole-coupled two-level atoms(qubits) in a single-mode resonant cavity is studied by extended bosonic coherent states. The numerically exact solution is presented. For finite systems, the first-order quantum phase transitions occur at the strong interatomic interaction. Similar to the original Dicke model, this system exhibits a second-order quantum phase transition from the normal to the superradiant phases. Finite-size scaling for several observables, such as the average fidelity susceptibility, the order parameter, and concurrence are performed for different interatomic interactions. T…
We study the quantum phase transitions between superfluid and Mott insulator states for ultracold bosons occupying two bands of an optical lattice. The two atomic states are resonantly coupled by a single cavity mode which mediates transitions between the two bosonic particle modes via absorption or emission of a cavity photon. This coupling between the bands shifts the appearance of the Mott insulator phase towards deeper optical lattice potentials and stronger on-site interaction strength, as atomic coherence can build up via photon assisted tunneling in both bands. Varying the intra and int…
We study the nonequilibrium quantum phase transition of an Ising chain in a dissipative cavity driven by an external transverse light field. When driving and dissipation are in balance, the system can reach a nonequilibrium steady state which undergoes a super-radiant phase transition as the driving strength increases. Interestingly, the super-radiant field changes the effective bias of the Ising chain in return and drives its own transition between the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phase. We study the rich physics in this system with sophisticated behavior, and investigate important issues i…
The emerging hybrid cavity optomagnonic system is a very promising quantum information processing platform for its strong or ultrastrong photon-magnon interaction on the scale of micrometers in the experiment. In this paper, the superfluid-Mott insulator quantum phase transition in a two-dimensional cavity optomagnonic array system has been studied based on this characteristic. The analytical solution of the critical hopping rate is obtained by the mean field approach, second perturbation theory and Landau second order phase transition theory. The numerical results show that the increasing cou…
We propose a scheme for realizing quantum controlled phase gates with two nonidentical quantum dots trapped in two coupled photonic crystal cavities and driven by classical laser fields under the condition of non-small hopping limit. During the gate operation, neither the quantum dots are excited, while the system can acquire different phases conditional upon the different states of the quantum dots. Along with single-qubit operations, a two-qubit controlled phase gate can be achieved.
We present a scheme for implementing the unconventional geometric two-qubit phase gate with nonzero dynamical phase by using the two-channel Raman interaction of two atoms in a cavity. We show that the dynamical phase acquired in a cyclic evolution is proportional to the geometric phase acquired in the same cyclic evolution, hence the the total phase possesses the same geometric features as the geometric phase. In our scheme the atomic excited state is adiabatically eliminated and the operation of the proposed logic gate involves only in the metastable states of the atom and hence is not affec…
We investigate the different photon emission regimes created by a preexcited and collimated atomic beam passing through a single mode of an optical cavity. In the regime where the cavity degrees of freedom can be adiabatically eliminated, we find that the atoms undergo superradiant emission when the collective linewidth exceeds the transit-time broadening. We analyze the case where the atomic beam direction is slanted with respect to the cavity axis. For this situation, we find that a phase of continuous light emission similar to steady-state superradiance is established providing the tilt of …
We investigate theoretically an open dynamics for two modes of electromagnetic field inside a microwave cavity. The dynamics is Markovian and determined by two types of reservoirs: the "natural" reservoirs due to dissipation and temperature of the cavity, and an engineered one, provided by a stream of atoms passing trough the cavity, as devised in [Pielawa \emph{et al.} \emph{Phys. Rev. Lett.} \textbf{98}, 240401 (2007)]. We found that, depending on the reservoir parameters, the system can have distinct "phases" for the asymptotic entanglement dynamics: it can disentangle at finite time or it …
We utilize high-bandwidth phase quadrature homodyne measurement of the light transmitted through a Fabry-Perot cavity, driven strongly and on resonance, to detect excess phase noise induced by a single intracavity atom. We analyze the correlation properties and driving-strength dependence of the atom-induced phase noise to establish that it corresponds to the long-predicted phenomenon of spontaneous dressed-state polarization. Our experiment thus provides a demonstration of cavity quantum electrodynamics in the strong driving regime, in which one atom interacts strongly with a many-photon cavi…
The diamond nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center is an excellent candidate for quantum information processing, whereas entangling separate NV centers is still of great experimental challenge. We propose an one-step conditional phase flip with three NV centers coupled to a whispering-gallery mode cavity by virtue of the Raman transition and smart qubit encoding. As decoherence is much suppressed, our scheme could work for more qubits. The experimental feasibility is justified.
We propose to simulate dynamical phases of a BCS superconductor using an ensemble of cold atoms trapped in an optical cavity. Effective Cooper pairs are encoded via internal states of the atoms and attractive interactions are realized via the exchange of virtual photons between atoms coupled to a common cavity mode. Control of the interaction strength combined with a tunable dispersion relation of the effective Cooper pairs allows exploration of the full dynamical phase diagram of the BCS model, as a function of system parameters and the prepared initial state. Our proposal paves the way for t…
Analysis of the dynamics of the cavity radiation of a coherently pumped correlated emission laser is presented. The phase fluctuation and dephasing are found to affect the time evolution of the two-mode squeezing and intensity of the cavity radiation significantly. The intensity and degree of the two-mode squeezing increase at early stages of the process with time, but this trend changes rapidly afterwards. It is also shown that they increase with phase fluctuation and dephasing in the strong driving limit, however the situation appears to be opposite in the weak driving limit. This essentiall…
We discuss an implementation of Quantum Zeno Dynamics in a Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics experiment. By performing repeated unitary operations on atoms coupled to the field, we restrict the field evolution in chosen subspaces of the total Hilbert space. This procedure leads to promising methods for tailoring non-classical states. We propose to realize `tweezers' picking a coherent field at a point in phase space and moving it towards an arbitrary final position without affecting other non-overlapping coherent components. These effects could be observed with a state-of-the-art apparatus.
We propose two kinds of distinguishing parameter regimes to induce topological Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) phase in a one dimensional (1D) multi-resonator cavity optomechanical system via modulating the frequencies of both cavity fields and resonators. The introduction of the frequency modulations allows us to eliminate the Stokes heating process for the mapping of the tight-binding Hamiltonian without usual rotating wave approximation, which is totally different from the traditional mapping of the topological tight-binding model. We find that the tight-binding Hamiltonian can be mapped into a …
We investigate the thermodynamics of a combined Dicke- and Ising-model which exhibits a rich phenomenology arising from the second order and quantum phase transitions from the respective models. The partition function is calculated using mean field theory, and the free energy is analyzed in detail to determine the complete phase diagram for the system. The analysis reveals both first- and second-order Dicke phase transitions into a super-radiant state, and the cavity mean-field in this regime acts as an effective magnetic field, which restricts the Ising chain dynamics to parameter ranges away…
We propose a scheme that can generate a tunable double optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT) in a hybrid optomechanical cavity system, in which the mechanical resonator of an optomechanical cavity is coupled to an additional mechanical resonator, and the additional mechanical resonator can be driven by a weak external coherently mechanical driving field. We show that both the intensity and the phase of the the external mechanical driving field can control the propagation of the probe field, including changing the transmission spectrum curve from a double-window to a single-window. Our s…

The possibility of a superradiant phase transition in light-matter systems is the subject of much debate, due to numerous apparently conflicting no-go and counter no-go theorems. Using an arbitrary gauge approach we show that a unique phase transition does occur in archetypal many-dipole cavity QED systems, and that it manifests unambiguously via a macroscopic gauge-invariant polarisation. We find that the gauge choice controls the extent to which this polarisation is included as part of the radiative quantum subsystem and thereby determines the degree to which the abnormal phase is classed as…
