Using Gaussian wave packet solutions, we examine how the kinetic energy is distributed in time-dependent solutions of the Schrodinger equation corresponding to the cases of a free particle, a particle undergoing uniform acceleration, a particle in a harmonic oscillator potential, and a system corresponding to an unstable equilibrium. We find, for specific choices of initial parameters, that as much as 90% of the kinetic energy can be localized (at least conceptually) in the `front half' of such Gaussian wave packets, and we visualize these effects.
This article investigates some solutions of the time-dependent free Dirac equation. Visualizations of these solutions immediately reveal strange phenomena that are caused by the interference of positive- and negative-energy waves. The effects discussed here include the Zitterbewegung, the opposite direction of momentum and velocity in negative-energy wave packets, and the superluminal propagation of the wave packet's local maxima.
We discuss the time development of Gaussian wave packet solutions of the quantum bouncer' (a quantum mechanical particle subject to a uniform downward force, above an impermeable flat surface). We focus on the evaluation and visualization of the expectation values and uncertainties of position and momentum variables during a single quasi-classical period as well as during the long term collapsed phase and several revivals. This approach complements existing analytic and numerical analyses of this system, as well as being useful for comparison with similar results for the harmonic oscillator an…
A conditional kinetic energy is defined in terms of the Wigner distribution. It is shown that this kinetic energy may become negative for negative Wigner distributions. A free particle wave packet with negative kinetic energy will spread in a nonclassical manner.
We consider time-dependent Gaussian wave packet solutions of the Schrodinger equation (with arbitrary initial central position, x_0, and momentum, p_0, for an otherwise free-particle, but with an infinite wall at x=0, so-called bouncing wave packets. We show how difference or mirror solutions of the form psi(x,t)-psi(-x,t) can, in this case, be normalized exactly, allowing for the evaluation of a number of time-dependent expectation values and other quantities in closed form. For example, we calculate <p^2>_t explicitly which illustrates how the free-particle kinetic (and hence total) energy i…
We study the quantum dynamics of a peculiar driven system, a Bose gas subjected to periodically kicked interactions. In the limit of infinitely short kicks, this system was recently shown to exhibit a fast exponential spreading of the wave function. Here we examine this problem for kicks or arbitrary duration and show that, in this case, the spreading is not exponential but rather subdiffusive at long time. This phenomenon stems from the competition between the kinetic and interaction energies within the kicks, which is absent in the limit of delta kicks. Our analysis further shows that the br…
We study quantum dynamics of a kicked relativistic spin-half particle in a one dimensional box. Time-dependence of the average kinetic energy and evolution of the wave packet are explored. Kicking potential is introduced as the Lorentz-scalar, i.e., through the mass-term in the Dirac equation. It is found that depending on the values of the kicking parameters E(t) can be periodic, monotonically growing and non-periodic function of time. Particle transport in the system is studied by considering spatio-temporal evolution of the Gaussian wave packet.Splitting of the packet into two symmetric par…
We find a new phenomenon, a particle like an electron, which transfers kinetic energy to other subject undergoes a decrease in its wave packet size in space and an electron that gains kinetic energy experiences an enlargement of its wavepacket size. This effect occurs in some amount of degree almost in any physical system. The effect has significance on electron transport in semiconductors, quantum wires, future devices in nanotechnology and quantum optics.
A system of two charged particles in a harmonic trap with additional magnetic field is considered. The problem is reduced to a single-particle one in relative coordinates. The ground- and lowest excited-state energies and wave functions are found. The ground state exhibits non-zero expectation value of the velocity (kinetic momentum) and the probability current density does not vanish as well. When the ground state becomes degenerate the expectation value of velocity becomes discontinuous. The effects associated with turning on of the magnetic field are studied by solving the appropriate time-…
A time-dependent approach for the kinetic energy release (KER) spectrum is developed for a fragmentation of a diatomic molecule after an electronic decay process, e.g. Auger process. It allows one to simulate the time-resolved spectra and provides more insight into the molecular dynamics than the time-independent approach. Detailed analysis of the time-resolved emitted electron and KER spectra sheds light on the interrelation between wave packet dynamics and spectra.
We report on quantum simulations of relativistic scattering dynamics using trapped ions. The simulated state of a scattering particle is encoded in both the electronic and vibrational state of an ion, representing the discrete and continuous components of relativistic wave functions. Multiple laser fields and an auxiliary ion simulate the dynamics generated by the Dirac equation in the presence of a scattering potential. Measurement and reconstruction of the particle wave packet enables a frame-by-frame visualization of the scattering processes. By precisely engineering a range of external pot…
It is shown that in the case of the one-particle one-dimensional scattering problem for a given time-independent potential, for each state of the whole quantum ensemble of identically prepared particles, there is an unique pair of (subensemble's) solutions to the Schrödinger equation, which, as we postulate, describe separately transmission and reflection: in the case of nonstationary states, for any instant of time, these functions are orthogonal and their sum describes the state of all particles; evolving with constant norms, one of them approaches at late times the transmitted wave packet a…
An exact time-dependent solution for the wave function $ψ(r,t)$ of a particle moving in the presence of an asymmetric rectangular well/barrier potential varying in one dimension is obtained by applying a novel for this problem approach using multiple scattering theory (MST) for the calculation of the space-time propagator. This approach, based on the localized at the potential jumps effective potentials responsible for transmission through and reflection from the considered rectangular potential, enables considering these processes from a particle (rather than a wave) point of view. The soluti…
We study classical and quantum dynamics of a kicked relativistic particle confined in a one dimensional box. It is found that in classical case for chaotic motion the average kinetic energy grows in time, while for mixed regime the growth is suppressed. However, in case of regular motion energy fluctuates around certain value. Quantum dynamics is treated by solving the time-dependent Dirac equation for delta-kicking potential, whose exact solution is obtained for single kicking period. In quantum case, depending on the values of the kicking parameters the average kinetic energy can be quasi pe…
