Composite pulse sequences designed for nuclear magnetic resonance experiments are currently being applied in many quantum information processing technologies. We present an analysis of a family of composite pulse sequences used to address systematic pulse-length errors in the execution of quantum gates. It has been demonstrated by Cummins et al. [Phys. Rev. A 67, 042308 (2003)] that for this family of composite pulse sequences, the fidelity of the resulting unitary operation compared with the ideal unitary operation is 1+C*epsilon^6, where epsilon is the fractional error in the length of the pulse. We derive an exact expression for the 6th order coefficient, C, and from this deduce conditions under which this 6th order dependance is observed. We also present new pulse sequences which achieve the same fidelity.
Robust time-optimal control is known to feature constant (square) pulses. We analyze fast adiabatic dynamics that preserve robustness by using alternative smooth quasi-square pulses, typically represented by hyper-Gaussian pulses. We here consider the two protocols, robust inverse optimization and time-contracted adiabatic passage, allowing the design of the same pulse shape in both cases. The dynamics and their performance are compared. The superiority of the former protocol is shown.
We address a problem of generating a robust entangling gate between electronic and nuclear spins in the system of a single nitrogen-vacany centre coupled to a nearest Carbon-13 atom in diamond against certain types of systematic errors such as pulse-length and off-resonance errors. We analyse the robustness of various control schemes: sequential pulses, composite pulses and numerically-optimised pulses. We find that numerically-optimised pulses, produced by the gradient ascent pulse engineering algorithm (GRAPE), are more robust than the composite pulses and the sequential pulses. The optimise…
We propose a method to design pulses in a resonant three-level system to enhance the robustness of non-adiabatic geometric gate operations. By optimizing the shape of the pulse envelope, we show that the gate operations are more robust against frequency detuning than they are with Gaussian and square pulses. Our method provides a way to design pulses that can be employed in a system where robustness against frequency variations or inhomogeneous broadening is required, and may be extended to ensure robustness against other physical imperfections such as intensity fluctuations and random noises.
We present a general procedure to implement a NOT gate by composite pulses robust against both offset uncertainties and control field variations. We define different degrees of robustness in this two-parameter space, namely along one, two or all directions. We show that the phases of the composite pulse satisfy a nonlinear system, and can be computed analytically or numerically.
Composite pulses are an efficient tool for robust quantum control. In this work, we derive the form of the composite pulse sequence to implement robust single-qubit gates in a three-level system, where two low-energy levels act as a qubit. The composite pulses can efficiently cancel the systematic errors up to a certain order. We find that the three-pulse sequence cannot completely eliminate the first order of systematic errors, but still availably makes the fidelity resistant to variations in a specific direction. When employing more pulses in the sequence ($N>3$), the fidelity can be insensi…
Coherent control of two-state systems is traditionally achieved by resonant pulses of specific Rabi frequency and duration, by adiabatic techniques using level crossings or delayed pulses, or by sequences of pulses with precise relative phases (composite pulses). Here we develop a method for high-fidelity coherent control which uses a sequence of detuning pulses. By using the detuning pulse areas as control parameters, and driving on an analogy with composite pulses, we report a great variety of detuning pulse sequences for broadband and narrowband transition probability profiles.
We introduce universally robust sequences for dynamical decoupling, which simultaneously compensate pulse imperfections and the detrimental effect of a dephasing environment to an arbitrary order, work with any pulse shape, and improve performance for any initial condition. Moreover, the number of pulses in a sequence grows only linearly with the order of error compensation. Our sequences outperform the state-of-the-art robust sequences for dynamical decoupling. Beyond the theoretical proposal, we also present convincing experimental data for dynamical decoupling of atomic coherences in a soli…
We developed single-shot shaped pulses for ultra high fidelity (UH-fidelity) population transfer on a 3-level quantum system in lambda configuration. To ensure high fidelity, we use the Lewis-Riesenfeld (L-R) method to derive a family of solutions leading to an exact transfer, where the solutions follow a single dynamical mode of the L-R invariant. Among this family, we identify a tracking solution with a single parameter to control simultaneously the fidelity of the transfer, the population of the excited state, and robustness. We define a measure of the robustness of an UH-fidelity transfer …
We introduce a novel control method for robust quantum information processing suited for quantum integrated photonics. We utilize off-resonant detunings as control parameters to derive a new family of composite pulses for high-fidelity population transfer within the quantum error threshold. By design, our detuning-modulated N-piece composite sequences correct for any control inaccuracies including pulse strength, duration, resonance offsets errors, Stark shifts, unwanted frequency chirp, etc. We reveal the symmetries of the pulses that allow for straightforward scaling with minimal pulse overh…
We introduce a method for detection of chiral molecules using sequences of three pulses driving a closed-loop three-state quantum system. The left- and right-handed enantiomers have identical optical properties (transition frequencies and transition dipole moments) with the only difference being the sign of one of the couplings. We identify twelve different sequences of resonant pulses for which chiral resolution with perfect contrast occurs. In all of them the first and third pulses are $π/2$-pulses and the middle pulse is a $π$-pulse. In addition, one of the three pulses must have a phase sh…
We apply the Small Tip-Angle Approximation in the Toggling Frame in order to analytically design robust pulses against resonance offsets for state to state transfer in two-level quantum systems. We show that a broadband or a local robustness up to an arbitrary order can be achieved. We provide different control parameterizations to satisfy experimental constraints and limitations on the amplitude or energy of the pulse. A comparison with numerical optimal solutions is made.
A general approach is introduced for the efficient simultaneous optimization of pulses that compensate each other' s imperfections within the same scan. This is applied to broadband Ramsey-type experiments, resulting in pulses with significantly shorter duration compared to individually optimized broadband pulses. The advantage of the cooperative pulse approach is demonstrated experimentally for the case of two-dimensional nuclear Overhauser enhancement spectroscopy. In addition to the general approach, a symmetry-adapted analysis of the optimization of Ramsey sequences is presented. Furthermo…
In this paper we study robust pulse design for electron shuttling in solid state devices. This is crucial for many practical applications of coherent quantum mechanical systems. Our objective is to design control pulses that can transport an electron along a chain of donors, and also make this process robust to parameter uncertainties. We formulate it as a set of optimal control problems on the special unitary group SU(n), and derive explicit expressions for the gradients of the aggregate transfer fidelity. Numerical results for a donor chain of ionized phosphorus atoms in bulk silicon demonst…
In this work, we exploit the idea of composite pulses to achieve robust population inversion in a three-level quantum system. The scheme is based on the modulation of the coupling strength, while the other physical parameters remain unchanged. The composite pulses sequence is designed by vanishing high-order error terms, and can compensate the systematic errors to any desired order. In particular, this scheme keeps a good performance under the disturbance of waveform deformations. This trait ensures that population inversion can be nearly obtained even when the pulse sequence has a short jump …
We develop theoretically and demonstrate experimentally a universal dynamical decoupling method for robust quantum sensing with unambiguous signal identification. Our method uses randomisation of control pulses to suppress simultaneously two types of errors in the measured spectra that would otherwise lead to false signal identification. These are spurious responses due to finite-width $π$ pulses, as well as signal distortion caused by $π$ pulse imperfections. For the cases of nanoscale nuclear spin sensing and AC magnetometry, we benchmark the performance of the protocol with a single nitroge…
We propose a pulsed dynamical decoupling protocol as the generator of tunable, fast, and robust quantum phase gates between two microwave-driven trapped ion hyperfine qubits. The protocol consists of sequences of $π$-pulses acting on ions that are oriented along an externally applied magnetic field gradient. In contrast to existing approaches, in our design the two vibrational modes of the ion chain cooperate under the influence of the external microwave driving to achieve significantly increased gate speeds. Our scheme is robust against the dominant noise sources, which are errors on the magn…
Accurate quantum control is a key technology for realizing quantum information processing, such as quantum communication and quantum computation. In reality, a quantum state under control suffers from undesirable effects caused by systematic errors. A composite pulse (CP) is used to eliminate the effects of systematic errors during control. One qubit control, which is the most fundamental in quantum control, is typically affected by two errors: pulse length error (PLE) and off-resonance error (ORE). In this study, we focus on ORE-robust CPs and systematically construct ORE-robust symmetric CPs…
We study the effectiveness of multi pulse control to suppress the degradation of entanglement. Based on a linearly interacting spin-boson model, we show that the multi pulse application recovers the decay of concurrence when an entangled pair of spins interacts with a reservoir that has the non-Markovian nature. We present the effectiveness of multi pulse control for both the common bath case and the individual bath case.
We introduce a new class of quantum quantum key distribution protocols, tailored to be robust against photon number splitting (PNS) attacks. We study one of these protocols, which differs from the BB84 only in the classical sifting procedure. This protocol is provably better than BB84 against PNS attacks at zero error.
The finite-amplitude short coherent control pulse with small random errors in its direction is considered. We derive the conditions for it to approximate an ideal delta-shaped pulse up to an error in the second order of pulse duration. Whether the symmetric and asymmetric pulse shapes would fulfill these conditions is also analyzed. The result shows that, under one of these conditions, all symmetric pulse shapes can fulfill this condition but not for all asymmetric ones..
We present a method to classically enhance noise-robustness of single-pixel imaging in photon counting regime with a pulsed source. By using time-domain cross-correlations between temporal profiles of a pulsed source and received signals, our scheme classically imitates the noise rejection concept of quantum imaging. Under a strong noise environment in which the background noise intensity is up to 120 times higher than the signal one, we compare three different images obtained by conventional, quantum-enhanced, and classically enhanced schemes. The results show that the classically enhanced sc…
The robustness of an atomic fountain interferometer with respect to variations in the initial velocity of the atoms and deviations from the optimal pulse amplitude is examined. We numerically simulate the dynamics of an interferometer in momentum space with a maximum separation of $20 \hbar k$ and map out the expected signal contrast depending on the variance of the initial velocity distribution and the value of the laser field amplitude. We show that an excitation scheme based on rapid adiabatic passage significantly enhances the expected signal contrast compared to the commonly used scheme c…
Trains of ultrashort laser pulses separated by the time of rotational revival (typically, tens of picoseconds) have been exploited for creating ensembles of aligned molecules. In this work we introduce a chiral pulse train - a sequence of linearly polarized pulses with the polarization direction rotating from pulse to pulse by a controllable angle. The chirality of such a train, expressed through the period and direction of its polarization rotation, is used as a new control parameter for achieving selectivity and directionality of laser-induced rotational excitation. The method employs chiral…
Single flux quantum pulses are a natural candidate for on-chip control of superconducting qubits. We show that they can drive high-fidelity single-qubit rotations---even in leaky transmon qubits---if the pulse sequence is suitably optimized. We achieve this objective by showing that, for these restricted all-digital pulses, genetic algorithms can be made to converge to arbitrarily low error, verified up to a reduction in gate error by 2 orders of magnitude compared to an evenly spaced pulse train. Timing jitter of the pulses is taken into account, exploring the robustness of our optimized sequ…
We present a new strategy for multipulse control over decoherence. When a two-level system interacts with a reservoir characterized by a specific frequency, we find that the decoherence is effectively suppressed by synchronizing the pulse-train application with the dynamical motion of the reservoir.
Structured decompositions of a desired unitary operator are employed to derive control schemes that achieve certain control objectives for finite-level quantum systems using only sequences of simple control pulses such as square waves with finite rise and decay times or Gaussian wavepackets. The technique is applied to find control schemes that achieve population transfers for pure-state systems, complete inversions of the ensemble populations for mixed-state systems, create arbitrary superposition states and optimize the ensemble average of observables.
Composite pulses, originally developed in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), have found widespread use in experimental quantum information processing (QIP) to reduce the effects of systematic errors. Most pulses used so far have simply been adapted from existing NMR designs, and while techniques have been developed for designing composite pulses with arbitrary precision the results have been quite complicated and have found little application. Here I describe techniques for designing short but effective composite pulses to implement robust NOT gates, bringing together existing insights from NMR…
Superconducting quantum circuits, such as the superconducting phase qubit, have multiple quantum states that can interfere with ideal qubit operation. The use of multiple frequency control pulses, resonant with the energy differences of the multi-state system, is theoretically explored. An analytical method to design such control pulses is developed, using a generalization of the Floquet method to multiple frequency controls. This method is applicable to optimizing the control of both superconducting qubits and qudits, and is found to be in excellent agreement with time-dependent numerical sim…
We experimentally demonstrate optimal storage and retrieval of light pulses of arbitrary shape in atomic ensembles. By shaping auxiliary control pulses, we attain efficiencies approaching the fundamental limit and achieve precise retrieval into any predetermined temporal profile. Our techniques, demonstrated in warm Rb vapor, are applicable to a wide range of systems and protocols. As an example, we present their potential application to the creation of optical time-bin qubits and to controlled partial retrieval.
We introduce a new approach to assess the error of control problems we aim to optimize. The method offers a strategy to define new control pulses that are not necessarily optimal but still able to yield an error not larger than some fixed a priori threshold, and therefore provide control pulses that might be more amenable for an experimental implementation. The formalism is applied to an exactly solvable model and to the Landau-Zener model, whose optimal control problem is solvable only numerically. The presented method is of importance for applications where a high degree of controllability o…
We present a detailed analysis of the recently demonstrated technique to generate quasi-stationary pulses of light [M. Bajcsy {\it et al.}, Nature (London) \textbf{426}, 638 (2003)] based on electromagnetically induced transparency. We show that the use of counter-propagating control fields to retrieve a light pulse, previously stored in a collective atomic Raman excitation, leads to quasi-stationary light field that undergoes a slow diffusive spread. The underlying physics of this process is identified as pulse matching of probe and control fields. We then show that spatially modulated contro…
We investigate how to effectively preserve the entanglement between two noninteracting multilevel oscillators coupled to a common reservoir under non-ideal pulse control. A universal characterization using fidelity is developed for the behavior of the system based on Nakajima-Zwanzig projection operator technique. Our analysis includes the validity of the approximation method and the decoherence-suppression by the non-ideal pulse control. The power of our strategy for protecting entanglement is numerically tested, showing potential applications for quantum information processing.
Coherent pulse control for quantum memory is viable in the optical domain but nascent in microwave quantum circuits. We show how to realize coherent storage and on-demand pulse retrieval entirely within a superconducting circuit by exploiting and extending existing electromagnetically induced transparency technology in superconducting quantum circuits. Our scheme employs a linear array of superconducting artificial atoms coupled to a microwave transmission line.
This paper focuses on accelerating quantum optimal control design for complex quantum systems. Based on our previous work [{arXiv:1607.04054}], we combine Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) and gradient descent algorithm into solving quantum optimal control problems, which shows distinct improvement of computational efficiency in various cases. To further apply this algorithm to potential experiments, we also propose the smooth realization of the optimized control solution, e.g. using Gaussian pulse train to replace rectangular pulses. Based on the experimental data of the D-Norleucine molecule, we …
The evolution of a two-state system driven by a sequence of imperfect pi pulses (with random phase or amplitude errors) is calculated. The resulting decreased fidelity is used to derive a plausible limit on the performance of "bang-bang" control methods for the suppression of decoherence.
Constructive methods for controlling a coupled, two spin system via bounded amplitude, piecewise sinusoidal fields are provided. The fields are incident at the alrmor frequencies and take one of two phase values
We present new results on the quantum control of systems with infinitely large Hilbert spaces. A control-theoretic analysis of the control of trapped ion quantum states via optical pulses is performed. We demonstrate how resonant bichromatic fields can be applied in two contrasting ways -- one that makes the system completely uncontrollable, and the other that makes the system controllable. In some interesting cases, the Hilbert space of the qubit-harmonic oscillator can be made finite, and the Schrödinger equation controllable via bichromatic resonant pulses. Extending this analysis to the qu…
Photon-echo based optical quantum memory schemes often employ intermediate steps to transform optical coherences to spin coherences for longer storage times. We analyze a scheme that uses three identical chirped control pulses for coherence rephasing in an inhomogeneously broadened ensemble of three-level $Λ$-systems. The pulses induce a cyclic permutation of the atomic populations in the adiabatic regime. Optical coherences created by a signal pulse are stored as spin coherences at an intermediate time interval, and are rephased for echo emission when the ensemble is returned to the initial s…
A general coherent control scenario to suppress, or accelerate, tunneling of quantum states decaying into a continuum, is investigated. The method is based on deterministic, or stochastic, sequences of unitary pulses that affect the underlying interference phenomena responsible for quantum dynamics, without inducing decoherence, or collapsing the coherent evolution of the system. The influence of control sequences on the ensuing quantum dynamics is analyzed by using perturbation theory to first order in the control pulse fields and compared to dynamical decoupling (DD) protocols and sequences …
We show that all geometric quantum gates (GQG's in short), which are quantum gates only with geometric phases, are robust against control field strength errors. As examples of this observation, we show (1) how robust composite rf-pulses in NMR are geometrically constructed and (2) a composite rf-pulse based on Trotter-Suzuki Formulas is a GQG.
Atom matterwave interferometry requires mirror and beamsplitter pulses that are robust to inhomogeneities in field intensity, magnetic environment, atom velocity and Zeeman sub-state. Pulse shapes determined using quantum control methods offer significantly improved interferometer performance by allowing broader atom distributions, larger interferometer areas and higher contrast. We have applied gradient ascent pulse engineering (GRAPE) to optimise the design of phase-modulated mirror pulses for a Mach-Zehnder light-pulse atom interferometer, with the aim of increasing fringe contrast when ave…

Control protocol to drive finite dimensional quantum systems to an arbitrary target state using square pulses is proposed explicitly. It is a multi-cycle control process and in each cycle we apply square pulses to cause single or a few transitions between energy levels. Systems with equal energy gaps except the first one, four dimensional system with equal first and third energy gaps and different second energy gap, and systems with all equal energy gaps of dimension three, are investigated in detail. The control parameters, the interaction time between systems and control fields and free evol…
The hardware overhead associated with microwave control is a major obstacle to scale-up of superconducting quantum computing. An alternative approach involves irradiation of the qubits with trains of Single Flux Quantum (SFQ) pulses, pulses of voltage whose time integral is precisely equal to the superconducting flux quantum. Here we describe the derivation and validation of compact SFQ pulse sequences in which classical bits are clocked to the qubit at a frequency that is roughly a factor 5 higher than the qubit oscillation frequency, allowing for variable pulse-to-pulse timing. The control s…
Quantum platforms based on trapped ions are main candidates to build a quantum hardware with computational capacities that largely surpass those of classical devices. Among the available control techniques in these setups, pulsed dynamical decoupling (pulsed DD) revealed as a useful method to process the information encoded in ion registers, whilst minimising the environmental noise over them. In this work, we incorporate a pulsed DD technique that uses random pulse phases, or correlated pulse phases, to significantly enhance the robustness of entangling spin-spin dynamics in trapped ions. Thi…
We propose a scheme for sensing of an oscillating field in systems with large inhomogeneous broadening and driving field variation by applying sequences of phased, adiabatic, chirped pulses. The latter act as a double filter for dynamical decoupling, where the adiabatic changes of the mixing angle during the pulses rectify the signal and partially remove frequency noise. The sudden changes between the pulses act as instantaneous $π$ pulses in the adiabatic basis for additional noise suppression. We also use the pulses' phases to correct for other errors, e.g., due to non-adiabatic couplings. O…
We apply the inverse geometric optimization technique to generate an optimal and robust stimulated Raman exact passage (STIREP) considering the loss of the upper state as a characterization parameter. Control fields temporal shapes that are optimal with respect to pulse area, energy, and duration, are found to form a simple sequence with a combination of intuitively (near the beginning and the end) and counter-intuitively ordered pulse pairs. The resulting dynamics produces a loss which is about a third of that of the non-robust optimal STIREP. Alternative optimal solutions featuring lower los…
