We report an experimental implementation of dynamical holographic tweezers for single trapped atoms. The tweezers are realized with dynamical phase holograms displayed on the liquid crystal spatial light modulator. We experimentally demonstrate the possibility to trap and move single rubidium atoms with such dynamic potentials, and study its limitations. We demonstrate the production of high density cold atom samples (2e14 atoms/cc) in a simple optical lattice formed with YAG light that is diffracted from a holographic phase plate. A loading protocol is described that results in 10,000 atoms per lattice site. Rapid free evaporation leads to phase space densities of 1/150 within 50 msec. The resulting small, high density atomic clouds are very attractive for a number of experiments, including ultracold Rydberg atom physics.
We propose a scheme for quantum logic with neutral atoms stored in an array of holographic dipole traps where the positions of the atoms can be rearranged by using holographic optical tweezers. In particular, this allows for the transport of two atoms to the same well where an external control field is used to perform gate operations via the molecular interaction between the atoms. We show that optimal control techniques allow for the fast implementation of the gates with high fidelity.
We demonstrate single-atom trapping in two-dimensional arrays of microtraps with arbitrary geometries. We demonstrate the production of micron-sized high density atom clouds of interest for meso- scopic quantum information processing. We evaporate atoms from 60 microK, 3x10^14 atoms/cm^3 samples contained in a highly anisotropic optical lattice formed by interfering di racted beams from a holographic phase plate. A high-resolution projection and imaging system for ultracold atoms is implemented using a compound silicon and glass atom chip. The atom chip is metalized to enable magnetic trapping while glass regions enable high numerical aperture optical access to atoms residing in the magnetic trap about 100 microns below the chip surface. We investigate fluorescence detection using a standing wave of blue-detuned light of one or more atoms held in a deep, microscopic dipole trap. The blue-detuned standing wave realizes a Sisyphus laser cooling mechanism so that an atom can scatter many photons while remaining trapped. When imaging more than one atom, the blue detuning limits loss due to inelastic light-assisted collisions. Using this standing wave probe beam, we demonstrate that we can count from one to the order of 100 atoms in the microtrap with sub-poissonian precision.
We trap individual $^{171}$Yb$^+$ ions in a surface trap microfabricated on a silicon substrate, and demonstrate a complete set of high fidelity single qubit operations for the hyperfine qubit. Trapping times exceeding 20 minutes without laser cooling, and heating rates as low as 0.8(0.1) quanta/ms indicate stable trapping conditions in these microtraps. A coherence time of more than one second, high fidelity qubit state detection and single qubit rotations are demonstrated.

We propose that a single mesoscopic ensemble of trapped polar molecules can support a "holographic quantum computer" with hundreds of qubits encoded in collective excitations with definite spatial phase variations. Each phase pattern is uniquely addressed by optical Raman processes with classical optical fields, while one- and two-qubit gates are accomplished by selectively transferring the individual qubit states to a stripline microwave cavity field and a Cooper pair box where controllable two-level unitary dynamics is governed by classical microwave fields.

Three-dimensional (3D) micro-electromagnets were developed to control particle motion in magnetic field landscapes in vacuum near a chip. Multiple layers of micron-scale conductors separated by transparent insulators create particle containers with deep, symmetric and time-dependent potentials, suitable for integration in quantum circuits. Single and coupled multiple 3D traps, integrated 3D traps with a mirror, 3D guides for neutral particles with spin, and traps for electrons in vacuum are described.
