Entanglement of the excitonic states in the system of two coupled semiconductor microcrystallites, whose sizes are much larger than the Bohr radius of exciton in bulk semiconductor but smaller than the relevant optical wavelength, is quantified in terms of the entropy of entanglement. It is observed that the nonlinear interaction between excitons increases the maximum values of the entropy of the entanglement more than that of the linear coupling model. Therefore, a system of two coupled microcrystallites can be used as a good source of entanglement with fixed exciton number. The relationship between the entropy of the entanglement and the population imbalance of two microcrystallites is numerically shown and the uppermost envelope function for them is estimated by applying the Jaynes principle.
The size-dependent decoherence of the exciton states resulting from the spontaneous emission is investigated in a semiconductor spherical microcrystallite under condition $a_{B}\ll R_{0}\leqλ$. In general, the larger size of the microcrystallite corresponds to the shorter coherence time. If the initial state is a superposition of two different excitonic coherent states, the coherence time depends on both the overlap of two excitonic coherent states and the size of the microcrystallite. When the system with fixed size is initially in the even or odd coherent states, the larger average number of…
The entanglement of excitonic states in a system of $N$ spatially separated semiconductor microcrystallites is investigated. The interaction among the different microcrystallites is mediated by a single-mode cavity field. It is found that the symmetric sharing of the entanglement (measured by the concurrence) between any pair of the excitonic state with $N$ qubits defined by the number states (vacuum and a single-exciton states) or the coherent states (odd and even coherent states) can be prepared by the cavity field for this system.
We propose an all-optical implementation of quantum-information processing in semiconductor quantum dots, where electron-hole excitations (excitons) serve as the computational degrees of freedom (qubits). We show that the strong dot confinement leads to an overall enhancement of Coulomb correlations and to a strong renormalization of the excitonic states, which can be exploited for performing conditional and unconditional qubit operations.
We investigate exciton emission of quantum well embedded in a semiconductor microcavity. The analytical expressions of the light intensity for the cases of excitonic number state and coherent state are presented by using secular approximation. Our results show that the effective exciton-exciton interaction leads to the appearance of collapse and revival of the light intensity. The revival time is twice compared the coherent state case with that of the number state. The dissipation of the exciton-polariton lowers the revival amplitude but does not alter the revival time. The influences of the d…
In organic semiconductors, bi-excitons are key intermediates in carrier-multiplication and exciton annihilation. Their local geometry governs their electronic properties and yet has been challenging to determine. Here, we access the structure of the recently discovered $S=2$ quintet bi-exciton state in an organic semiconductor using broadband optically detected magnetic resonance. We correlate the experimentally extracted spin structure with the molecular crystal geometry to identify the specific molecular pairings on which bi-exciton states reside.
We calculate the off-diagonal long range order (ODLRO) terms of the exciton--exciton correlation function of a semiconductor bilayer system with Coulomb interaction and a transverse magnetic field. We show that the formation of a BEC state is very sensitive to the width of the interaction in momentum space. This dependence is analytically derived and represents the key physical ingredient for the formation (or not) of an exciton condensate state.
We consider the excitation of polariton wakefields due to a propagating source in a semiconductor micro cavity. We show that two kinds of wakes are possible, depending on the constituents fraction (either exciton or photon) of the polariton wavefunction. The nature of the wakefields (pure excitonic or polaritonic) can be controled by changing the speed of propagation of the external pump. This process could be used as a diagnostic for the internal parameters of the microcavity.
Semiconductor quantum dots are considered to be the leading venue for fabricating on-demand sources of single photons. However, the generation of long-lived dark excitons imposes significant limits on the efficiency of these sources. We demonstrate a technique that optically pumps the dark exciton population and converts it to a bright exciton population, using intermediate excited biexciton states. We show experimentally that our method considerably reduces the DE population while doubling the triggered bright exciton emission, approaching thereby near-unit fidelity of quantum dot depletion.
The elementary optical excitations of a two-dimensional electron or hole system have been identified as exciton-Fermi-polarons. Nevertheless, the connection between the bound state of an exciton and an electron, termed trion, and exciton-polarons is subject of ongoing debate. Here, we use an analogy to the Tavis-Cummings model of quantum optics to show that an exciton-polaron can be understood as a hybrid quasiparticle -- a coherent superposition of a bare exciton in an unperturbed Fermi sea and a bright collective excitation of many trions. The analogy is valid to the extent that the Chevy An…
The dependence of the excitonic two-photon absorption on the quantum correlations (entanglement) of exciting biphotons by a semiconductor quantum well is studied. We show that entangled photon absorption can display very unusual features depending on space-time-polarization biphoton parameters and absorber density of states for both bound exciton states as well as for unbound electron-hole pairs. We report on the connection between biphoton entanglement, as quantified by the Schmidt number, and absorption by a semiconductor quantum well. Comparison between frequency-anti-correlated, unentangle…
We demonstrate storage of excitons in a single nanostructure, a self-assembled Quantum Post. After generation electron and holes forming the exciton are separated by an electric field towards opposite ends of the Quantum Post inhibiting their radiative recombination. After a defined time such spatially indirect excitons are reconverted to optically active direct excitons by switching the electric field. The emitted light of the stored exciton is detected in the limit of a single nanostructure and storage times exceeding 30 msec are demonstrated. We identify a slow tunneling of the electron out…
We consider a nanostructure consisting of a semiconductor quantum dot coupled to a metal nanoparticle, and show with numerical simulations that the exciton state of the quantum dot can be robustly generated from the ground state even for small interparticle distances, using conventional chirped pulses with Gaussian and hyperbolic secant envelopes. The asymmetry observed in the final exciton population with respect to the chirp sign of the applied pulses is explained using the nonlinear density matrix equations describing the system, and is attributed to the real part of the parameter emerging …
Recent experiments have demonstrated strong light-matter coupling between electromagnetic nanoresonators and pristine sheets of two-dimensional semiconductors, and it has been speculated whether these systems can enter the quantum regime operating at the few-polariton level. To address this question, we present a first-principles microscopic quantum theory for the interaction between excitons in an infinite sheet of two-dimensional material and a localised electromagnetic resonator. We find that the light-matter interaction breaks the symmetry of the otherwise translation-invariant system and …
The realization of exciton-polaritons -- hybrid excitations of semiconductor quantum well excitons and cavity photons -- has been of great technological and scientific significance. In particular, the short-range collisional interaction between excitons has enabled explorations into a wealth of nonequilibrium and hydrodynamical effects that arise in weakly nonlinear polariton condensates. Yet, the ability to enhance optical nonlinearities would enable quantum photonics applications and open up a new realm of photonic many-body physics in a scalable and engineerable solid-state environment. Her…
Exciton-polariton solitons are strongly nonlinear quasiparticles composed of coupled exciton-photon states due to the interaction of light with matter. In semiconductor microcavity systems such as semiconductor micro and nanowires, polaritons are characterized by a negative mass which when combined with the repulsive nonlinear exciton-exciton interaction, leads to the generation of bright polariton solitons. In this work we investigate the dynamics of bright exciton-polariton solitons in a finite-size microcavity waveguide, for which radiative losses are assumed balanced by the external pumpin…
We report a combined theoretical/experimental study of dynamic screening of excitons in media with frequency-dependent dielectric functions. We develop an analytical model showing that interparticle interactions in an exciton are screened in the range of frequencies from zero to the characteristic binding energy depending on the symmetries and transition energies of that exciton. The problem of the dynamic screening is then reduced to simply solving the Schrodinger equation with an effectively frequency-independent potential. Quantitative predictions of the model are experimentally verified us…
We present Floquet-Keldysh non-equilibrium dynamical mean field calculations (DMFT) with an iterative perturbative solver (IPT) for high pump-power induced Stark states yielding a closing gap within semiconductor bulk and nano-cavities. Our model predicts unusual broadening of bands in systems like ZnO random lasers. This can be explained as an exciton-polariton coupling within the single crystalline pillar meeting the Mie resonance condition. Extraordinary enhancement of the lifetime of electronic states within the gap can lead to stable lasing modes and gain narrowing.
