The effects of incoherence and decoherence in the double--slit experiment are studied using both optical and quantum--phenomenological models. The results are compared with experimental data obtained with cold neutrons.
We provide support for the claim that momentum is conserved for individual events in the electron double slit experiment. The natural consequence is that a physical mechanism is responsible for this momentum exchange, but that even if the fundamental mechanism is known for electron crystal diffraction and the Kapitza-Dirac effect, it is unknown for electron diffraction from nano-fabricated double slits. Work towards a proposed explanation in terms of particle trajectories affected by a vacuum field is discussed. The contentious use of trajectories is discussed within the context of oil droplet…
A study of the effects of Gaussian distribution of coherence length of source on the diffraction of partial temporal coherence beam from multi slits: Theory and simulation
Even 100 years after its introduction by Louis de Broglie, the wave-nature of matter is often regarded as a mind-boggling phenomenon. To give an intuitive introduction to this field, we here discuss the diffraction of massive molecules through a single, double, and triple slit, as well as a nanomechanical grating. While the experiments are in good agreement with undergraduate textbook predictions, we also observe pronounced differences resulting from the molecules' mass and internal complexity. The molecules' polarizability causes an attractive van der Waals interaction with the slit walls, wh…
A double cavity with a quantum mechanical and a classical field is located immediately behind of a double-slit in order to analyse the wave-particle duality. Both fields have common nodes and antinodes through which a three-level atom passes after crossing the double-slit. The atom-field interaction is maximum when the atom crosses a common antinode and path-information can be recorded on the phase of the quantum field. On other hand, if the atom crosses a common node, the interaction is null and no path-information is stored. A quadrature measurement on the quantum field can reveal the path f…
We cast diffraction-based interferometry in the framework of post-selected unitary description towards enabling it as a platform for quantum information processing. We express slit-diffraction as an infinite-dimensional transformation and truncate it to a finite-dimensional transfer matrix by post-selecting modes. Using such a framework with classical fields, a customized double-slit setup is effectively a lossy beam splitter in a post-selected sense. Diffraction optics provides a robust alternative to conventional multi-beam interferometry with scope for miniaturization, and also has applicat…
Diffraction in time manifests itself as the appearance of probability-density fringes when a matter wave passes through an opaque screen with abrupt temporal variations of transmission properties. Here we analytically describe the phase-space structure of diffraction-in-time fringes for a class of smooth time gratings. More precisely, we obtain an analytic expression for the Husimi distribution representing the state of the system in the case of time gratings comprising a succession of Lorentzian-like slits. In particular, for a double-slit scenario, we derive a simple and intuitive expression…

Entanglement can modify the interference patterns of multi-particle systems. We analyse, using the path integral formalism, a novel example of multi-particle interference and some unexplored aspects of this phenomenon by considering the two-slit arrangement with two distinguishable particles in a superposition state. The two components of entanglement, multiplicity of multi-particle terms and their coherence, can be studied separately by comparing the patterns of product, mixed and superposition states. This suggests a scheme to detect multi-particle superposition in some favourable cases. Mor…
In the the double-slit experiment, nonclassical paths are Feynman paths that go through both slits. Prior work with atom cavities as which-way detectors in the double-slit experiment has shown these paths to be experimentally inaccessible. In this paper, we show how such a setup can indeed detect nonclassical paths with 1% probability if one considers a different type of nonclassical path than previously investigated. We also show how this setup can be used to erase and restore the coherence of the nonclassical paths. Finally, we also show how atom cavities may be used to implement a exact mea…
