In this paper we briefly review the functional version of the Koopman-von Neumann operatorial approach to classical mechanics. We then show that its quantization can be achieved by freezing to zero two Grassmannian partners of time. This method of quantization presents many similarities with the one known as Geometric Quantization.
A fully geometric procedure of quantization that utilizes a natural and necessary metric on phase space is reviewed and briefly related to the goals of the program of geometric quantization.
Geometric quantization procedures go usually through an extension of the original theory (pre-quantization) and a subsequent reduction (selection of the physical states). In this context we describe a full geometrical mechanism which provides dynamically the desired reduction.
By using the Feynman-Hibbs prescription for the evolution amplitude, we quantize the system of a damped harmonic oscillator coupled to its time-reversed image, known as Bateman's dual system. The time-dependent quantum states of such a system are constructed and discussed entirely in the framework of the classical theory. The corresponding geometric (Pancharatnam) phase is calculated and found to be directly related to the ground-state energy of the 1D linear harmonic oscillator to which the 2D system reduces under appropriate constraint.
Coherent state theory is shown to reproduce three categories of representations of the spectrum generating algebra for an algebraic model: (i) classical realizations which are the starting point for geometric quantization; (ii) induced unitary representations corresponding to prequantization; and (iii) irreducible unitary representations obtained in geometric quantization by choice of a polarization. These representations establish an intimate relation between coherent state theory and geometric quantization in the context of induced representations.
We show that non-relativistic and relativistic mechanical systems on a configuration space Q can be seen as the conservative Dirac constraint systems with zero Hamiltonians on different subbundles of the same cotangent bundle T^*Q. The geometric quantization of this cotangent bundle under the vertical polarization leads to compatible covariant quantizations of non-relativistic and relativistic Hamiltonian mechanics.
We provide geometric quantization of the vertical cotangent bundle V^*Q equipped with the canonical Poisson structure. This is a momentum phase space of non-relativistic mechanics with the configuration bundle Q -> R. The goal is the Schrodinger representation of V^*Q. We show that this quantization is equivalent to the fibrewise quantization of symplectic fibres of V^*Q -> R, that makes the quantum algebra of non-relativistic mechanics an instantwise algebra. Quantization of the classical evolution equation defines a connection on this instantwise algebra, which provides quantum evolution in …
Geometric quantization of a Poisson manifold need not imply quantization of its symplectic leaves. We provide the leafwise geometric quantization of a Poisson manifold, seen as a foliated one, whose quantum algebra restricted to each leaf is quantized.
We present a new method for the consistent construction of time-continuous coherent-state path integrals using the theory of half-form quantization. Through the inversion of the quantization procedure we construct a de-quantization map taking first order operators to their corresponding path integrals. We generalize our results using functional techniques, allowing for the consistent path integral study of more general operators, including higher orders and interactions.
The geometric quantization problem is considered from the point of view of the Davies and Lewis approach to quantum mechanics. The influence of the measuring device is accounted in the classical and quantum case and it is shown that the conditions of the measurement define the type of quantization (Weyl, normal, antinormal, etc.). The quantum states and quantum operators are obtained by means of the projection, defined from the system of generalized coherent states.
The prequantization map for a Poisson-Gerstenhaber algebra of dynamical variables represented by differential forms within the polysymplectic formulation of the De Donder--Weyl covariant Hamiltonian field theory is presented and the corresponding prequantum Schroedinger equation for a non-homogeneous form valued wave function is derived. This is the first step toward understanding the procedures of covariant precanonical field quantization from the point of view of geometric quantization.
It is shown here and in the preceeding paper (quant-ph/0201129) that vector coherent state theory, the theory of induced representations, and geometric quantization provide alternative but equivalent quantizations of an algebraic model. The relationships are useful because some constructions are simpler and more natural from one perspective than another. More importantly, each approach suggests ways of generalizing its counterparts. In this paper, we focus on the construction of quantum models for algebraic systems with intrinsic degrees of freedom. Semi-classical partial quantizations, for wh…
The basic elements of the geometric approach to a consistent quantization formalism are summarized, with reference to the methods of the old quantum mechanics and the induced representations theory of Lie groups. A possible relationship between quantization and discretization of the configuration space is briefly discussed.
In this review the foundations of Geometric Quantization are explained and discussed. In particular, we want to clarify the mathematical aspects related to the geometrical structures involved in this theory: complex line bundles, hermitian connections, real and complex polarizations, metalinear bundles and bundles of densities and half-forms. In addition, we justify all the steps followed in the geometric quantization programme, from the standpoint definition to the structures which are successively introduced.
Quantum systems with adiabatic classical parameters are widely studied, e.g., in the modern holonomic quantum computation. We here provide complete geometric quantization of a Hamiltonian system with time-dependent parameters, without the adiabatic assumption. A Hamiltonian of such a system is affine in the temporal derivative of parameter functions. This leads to the geometric Berry factor phenomena.
A relativistic Hamiltonian mechanical system is seen as a conservative Dirac constraint system on the cotangent bundle of a pseudo-Riemannian manifold. We provide geometric quantization of this cotangent bundle where the quantum constraint serves as a relativistic quantum equation.
These lecture notes (from the Second Autumn School in High Energy Physics and Quantum Field Theory, Yerevan 2014) cover a number of topics related to geometric quantization. Most of the material is presented from a physicist's point of view. The original notes are posted at \verb+http://theorphyslab-ysu.info/VW_ASW-2014/uploads/ArmeniaLectures.pdf+. The have been revised with some additions and changes, although referencing is still somewhat dated. These notes are posted here as they may be good background material for some recent papers.
A fundamental problem regarding the Dirac quantization of a free particle on an $N-1$ curved hypersurface embedded in $N$($\geq 2$) flat space is the impossibility to give the same form of the curvature-induced quantum potential, the geometric potential as commonly called, as that given by the Schrödinger equation method where the particle moves in a region confined by a thin-layer sandwiching the surface. We resolve this problem by means of previously proposed scheme that hypothesizes a simultaneous quantization of positions, momenta, and Hamiltonian, among which the operator-ordering-free se…
Second quantization of a classical nonrelativistic one-particle system as a deformation quantization of the Schrodinger spinless field is considered. Under the assumption that the phase space of the Schrodinger field is $C^{\infty}$, both, the Weyl-Wigner-Moyal and Berezin deformation quantizations are discussed and compared. Then the geometric quantum mechanics is also quantized using the Berezin method under the assumption that the phase space is $CP^{\infty}$ endowed with the Fubini-Study Kahlerian metric. Finally, the Wigner function for an arbitrary particle state and its evolution equati…
We present a simple geometric construction linking geometric to deformation quantization. Both theories depend on some apparently arbitrary parameters, most importantly a polarization and a symplectic connection, and for real polarizations we find a compatibility condition restricting the set of admissible connections. In the special case when phase space is a cotangent bundle this compatibility condition has many solutions, and the resulting quantum theory not only reproduces the well-known geometric quantization scheme, but also allows to quantize all interesting observables. For Kähler mani…
A time-dependent completely integrable Hamiltonian system is quantized with respect to time-dependent action-angle variables near an instantly compact regular invariant manifold. Its Hamiltonian depends only on action variables, and has a time-independent countable energy spectrum.
The conditions that must be fulfilled by a certain physical system to apply geometric quantization prescription on it are investigated. These terms are sought as mathematical requirements, which can be traced in an analysis of integrable systems, from the perspective of both potential function and Hamiltonian vector field. The answer is found in momentum map critical points. Basically, a certain disposal of points that allow a momentum map $C^*$ isomorphism, of observables, with harmonic oscillator momentum map enforce geometric quantization rules. Following the general theory, two newly prese…
We assume that M is a phase space and H an Hilbert space yielded by a quantization scheme. In this paper we consider the set of all "experimental propositions" of M and we look for a model of quantum logic in relation to the quantization of the base manifold M. In particular we give a new interpretation about previous results of the author in order to build an "asymptotic quantum probability space" for the Hilbert lattice L(H).
We provide geometric quantization of a completely integrable Hamiltonian system in the action-angle variables around an invariant torus with respect to polarization spanned by almost-Hamiltonian vector fields of angle variables. The associated quantum algebra consists of functions affine in action coordinates. We obtain a set of its nonequivalent representations in the separable pre-Hilbert space of smooth complex functions on the torus where action operators and a Hamiltonian are diagonal and have countable spectra.
In a ring of s-wave superconducting material the magnetic flux is quantized in units of $Φ_0 = \frac{h}{2e}$. It is well known from the theory of Josephson junctions that if the ring is interrupted with a piece of d-wave material, then the flux is quantized in one-half of those units due to a additional phase shift of $π$. We reinterpret this phenomenon in terms of geometric phase. We consider an idealized hetero-junction superconductor with pure s-wave and pure d-wave electron pairs. We find, for this idealized configuration, that the phase shift of $π$ follows from the discontinuity in the g…
We describe quantum and classical Hamiltonian dynamics in a common Hilbert space framework, that allows the treatment of mixed quantum-classical systems. The analysis of some examples illustrates the possibility of entanglement between classical and quantum systems. We give a summary of the main tools of Berezin-Toeplitz and geometric quantization, that provide a relation between the classical and the quantum models, based essentially on the selection of a subspace of the classical Hilbert space. Coherent states provide a systematic tool for the inverse process, called dequantization, that ass…
Within the Hamiltonian framework, the propositions about a classical physical system are described in the Borel σ-algebra of a symplectic manifold (the phase space) where logical connectives are the standard set operations. Considering the geometric formulation of quantum mechanics we give a description of quantum propositions in terms of fuzzy events in a complex projective space equipped with Kähler structure (the quantum phase space) obtaining a quantized version of a fuzzy logic by deformation of the product t-norm.
We compare the respective efficiencies of three quantization methods (group theoretical, coherent state and geometric) by quantizing the dynamics of a free massive particle in two-dimensional de Sitter space. For each case we consider the realization of the principal series representation of $SO_0(1,2) $ group and its two-fold covering SU(1,1). We demonstrate that standard technique for finding an irreducible representation within the geometric quantization scheme fails. For consistency we recall our earlier results concerning the other two methods, make some improvements and generalizations.
Let K be a connected Lie group of compact type and let T*(K) be its cotangent bundle. This paper considers geometric quantization of T*(K), first using the vertical polarization and then using a natural Kahler polarization obtained by identifying T*(K) with the complexified group K_C. The first main result is that the Hilbert space obtained by using the Kahler polarization is naturally identifiable with the generalized Segal-Bargmann space introduced by the author from a different point of view, namely that of heat kernels. The second main result is that the pairing map of geometric quantizati…
It is possible to reproduce the quantum features of quantum states, starting from a classical statistical theory and then limiting the amount of knowledge that an agent can have about an individual system [5, 18].These are so called epistemic restrictions. Such restrictions have been recently formulated in terms of the symplectic geometry of the corresponding classical theory [19]. The purpose of this note is to describe, using this symplectic framework, how to obtain a C*-algebraic formulation for the epistemically restricted theories. In the case of continuous variables, following the groupo…
We describe nonassociative deformations of geometry probed by closed strings in non-geometric flux compactifications of string theory. We show that these non-geometric backgrounds can be geometrised through the dynamics of open membranes whose boundaries propagate in the phase space of the target space compactification, equiped with a twisted Poisson structure. The effective membrane target space is determined by the standard Courant algebroid over the target space twisted by an abelian gerbe in momentum space. Quantization of the membrane sigma-model leads to a proper quantization of the non-…
We define and study the notion of quantum polarity, which is a kind of geometric Fourier transform between sets of positions and sets of momenta. Extending previous work of ours, we show that the orthogonal projections of the covariance ellipsoid of a quantum state on the configuration and momentum spaces form what we call a dual quantum pair. We thereafter show that quantum polarity allows solving the Pauli reconstruction problem for Gaussian wavefunctions. The notion of quantum polarity exhibits a strong interplay between the uncertainty principle and symplectic and convex geometry and our a…
Combination of a construction of unambiguous quantum conditions out of the conventional one and a simultaneous quantization of the positions, momenta, angular momenta and Hamiltonian leads to the geometric potential given by the so-called thin-lay quantization.
By the quantization condition compact quantizable Kaehler manifolds can be embedded into projective space. In this way they become projective varieties. The quantum Hilbert space of the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization (and of the geometric quantization) is the projective coordinate ring of the embedded manifold. This allows for generalization to the case of singular varieties. The set-up is explained in the first part of the contribution. The second part of the contribution is of tutorial nature. Necessary notions, concepts, and results of algebraic geometry appearing in this approach to quantiz…
