Lueders theorem states that two observables commute if measuring one of them does not disturb the measurement outcomes of the other. We study measurements which are described by continuous positive operator-valued measurements (or POVMs) associated with coherent states on a Lie group. In general, operators turn out to be invariant under the Lueders map if their P- and Q-symbols coincide. For a spin corresponding to SU(2), the identity is shown to be the only operator with this property. For a particle, a countable family of linearly independent operators is identified which are invariant under the Lueders map generated by the coherent states of the Heisenberg-Weyl group, H_3. The Lueders map is also shown to implement the anti-normal ordering of creation and annihilation operators of a particle.
In a recent Letter~[PRL \textbf{121}, 130404 (2018)], it was announced that the spin-coherent-state POVM can be implemented via a nonadaptive continuous isotropic measurement. In this article, the mathematical concepts used to prove this are explained in greater depth. Also provided is the more general result of how to implement a generalized-coherent-state POVM for any finite-dimensional unitary representation of a Lie group.
We mainly study the block-coherence measures based on resource theory of block-coherence and the coherence measures based on positive-operator-valued measures (POVM). Several block-coherence measures including a block-coherence measure based on maximum relative entropy, the one-shot block coherence cost under the maximally block-incoherent operations, and a coherence measure based on coherent rank have been introduced and the relationships between these block-coherence measures have been obtained. We also give the definition of the maximally block-coherent state and describe the deterministic …
How to perform the coherent measurement of a curved phase space by continuous isotropic measurement. I. Spin and the Kraus-operator geometry of $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$
We present a correspondence between positive operator valued measures (POVMs) and sets of generalized coherent states. Positive operator valued measures describe quantum observables and, similarly to quantum states, also quantum observables can be mixed. We show how the formalism of generalized coherent states leads to a useful characterization of extremal POVMs. We prove that covariant phase space observables related to squeezed states are extremal, while the ones related to number states are not extremal.
The the over-complete eigenvector system of the operator Q^{-1}P (Q:position, P:momentum) which consists of the squeezed states |0; s, t > with various s and t are investigated from the viewpoint of the annihilation and creation relations related to the algebra su(1,1). We derive a positive operator-valued measure(POVM) for the simultaneous measurement between the self-adjoint and anti-self-adjoint parts of PQ^{-1}.
The spin-coherent-state positive-operator-valued-measure (POVM) is a fundamental measurement in quantum science, with applications including tomography, metrology, teleportation, benchmarking, and measurement of Husimi phase space probabilities. We prove that this POVM is achieved by collectively measuring the spin projection of an ensemble of qubits weakly and isotropically. We apply this in the context of optimal tomography of pure qubits. We show numerically that through a sequence of weak measurements of random directions of the collective spin component, sampled discretely or in a continu…
We derive a measurement operator corresponding to a quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of an atomic ensemble. The quantum measurement operator takes the form of a positive operator valued measure (POVM) and is valid for arbitrary interaction times, initial coherent state amplitudes, and final photon measurement outcomes. We analyze the dependence on various parameters and show that the effect of the QND measurement for short interaction times is to apply a Gaussian modulation of the initial state wavefunction. We derive approximate expressions for the POVM in various limits, such as the s…
Homodyne measurements are a widely used quantum measurement. Using a coherent state of large amplitude as the local oscillator, it can be shown that the quantum homodyne measurement limits to a field quadrature measurement. In this work, we give an example of a general idea: injecting non-classical states as a local oscillator can led to non-classical measurements. Specifically we consider injecting a superposition of coherent states, a Schrödinger cat state, as a local oscillator. We derive the Kraus operators and the positive operator-valued measure (POVM) in this situation.
Quantum coherence represented by a superposition of energy eigenstates is, together with energy, an important resource for quantum technology and thermodynamics. Energy and quantum coherence however, can be complementary. The increase of energy can reduce quantum coherence and vice versa. Recently, it was realized that steady-state quantum coherence could be autonomously harnessed from a cold environment. We propose a conditional synthesis of $N$ independent two-level systems (TLS) with partial quantum coherence obtained from an environment to one coherent system using a measurement able to in…

Conventional tomographic techniques are becoming increasingly infeasible for reconstructing the operators of quantum devices of growing sophistication. We describe a novel tomographic procedure using coherent states which begins by reconstructing the diagonals of the operator, and then each successive off-diagonal in a recursive manner. Each recursion is considerably more efficient than reconstructing the operator in its entirety, and each successive recursion involves fewer parameters. We apply our technique to reconstruct the positive-operator-valued measure (POVM) corresponding to a recentl…
The long spin coherence times in ambient conditions of color centers in solids, such as nitrogen-vacancy (NV$^{-}$) centers in diamond, make these systems attractive candidates for quantum sensing. Quantum sensing provides remarkable sensitivity at room temperature to very small external perturbations, including magnetic fields, electric fields, and temperature changes. A photoreceptive molecule, such as those involved in vision, changes its charge state or conformation in response to the absorption of a single photon. We show the resulting change in local electric field modifies the propertie…
