We present a derivation of the Von Neumann entropy and mutual information of arbitrary two--mode Gaussian states, based on the explicit determination of the symplectic eigenvalues of a generic covariance matrix. The key role of the symplectic invariants in such a determination is pointed out. We show that the Von Neumann entropy depends on two symplectic invariants, while the purity (or the linear entropy) is determined by only one invariant, so that the two quantities provide two different hierarchies of mixed Gaussian states. A comparison between mutual information and entanglement of formation for symmetric states is considered, remarking the crucial role of the symplectic eigenvalues in qualifying and quantifying the correlations present in a generic state.
The probability representation of quantum and classical statistical mechanics is discussed. Symplectic tomography, center-of-mass tomography, and spin tomography are studied. The connection of tomographic probabilities with dynamic symmetries like symplectic group is considered. Entropic uncertainty relations and inequalities for spin tomograms are reviewed.
We study the information geometry and the entropic dynamics of a 3D Gaussian statistical model. We then compare our analysis to that of a 2D Gaussian statistical model obtained from the higher-dimensional model via introduction of an additional information constraint that resembles the quantum mechanical canonical minimum uncertainty relation. We show that the chaoticity (temporal complexity) of the 2D Gaussian statistical model, quantified by means of the Information Geometric Entropy (IGE) and the Jacobi vector field intensity, is softened with respect to the chaoticity of the 3D Gaussian st…
Gaussian distribution of a quantum state with continuous spectrum is known to maximize the Shannon entropy at a fixed variance. Applying it to a pair of canonically conjugate quantum observables $\hat x$ and $\hat p$, quantum entropic uncertainty relation can take a suggestive form, where the standard deviations $σ_x$ and $σ_p$ are featured explicitly. From the construction, it follows in a transparent manner that: (i) the entropic uncertainty relation implies the Kennard-Robertson uncertainty relation in a modifed form, $σ_xσ_p\geq\hbar e^{\cal N}/2$; (ii) the additional factor ${\cal N}$ qua…
A simple criterion for local equality between the constrained Holevo capacity and the quantum mutual information of a quantum channel is obtained. It implies that the set of all states for which this equality holds is determined by the kernel of the channel (as a linear map). Applications to Bosonic Gaussian channels are considered. It is shown that for a Gaussian channel having no completely depolarizing components the above characteristics may coincide only at non-Gaussian mixed states and a criterion of existence of such states is given. All the obtained results may be reformulated as condi…
We show that every Gaussian mixed quantum state can be disentangled by conjugation with a metaplectic operator associated with a symplectic rotation. The main tools we use are the Werner-Wolf condition on covariance matrices and the symplectic covariance of Weyl quantization.
We survey the state of the art for the proof of the quantum Gaussian optimizer conjectures of quantum information theory. These fundamental conjectures state that quantum Gaussian input states are the solution to several optimization problems involving quantum Gaussian channels. These problems are the quantum counterpart of three fundamental results of functional analysis and probability: the Entropy Power Inequality, the sharp Young's inequality for convolutions, and the theorem "Gaussian kernels have only Gaussian maximizers." Quantum Gaussian channels play a key role in quantum communicatio…
Entropic Dynamics (ED) is a framework in which Quantum Mechanics (QM) is derived as an application of entropic methods of inference. The magnitude of the wave function is manifestly epistemic: its square is a probability distribution. The epistemic nature of the phase of the wave function is also clear: it controls the flow of probability. The dynamics is driven by entropy subject to constraints that capture the relevant physical information. The central concern is to identify those constraints and how they are updated. After reviewing previous work I describe how considerations from informati…
We apply the notion of polar duality from convex geometry to the study of quantum covariance ellipsoids in symplectic phase space. We consider in particular the case of "quantum blobs" introduced in previous work; quantum blobs are the smallest symplectic invariant regions of the phase space compatible with the uncertainty principle in its strong Robertson--Schrödinger form. We show that these phase space units can be characterized by a simple condition of reflexivity using polar duality, thus improving previous results. We apply these geometric constructions to the characterization of pure Ga…
We generalize our earlier work on the symplectic/Hamiltonian formulation of the dynamics of the Gaussian wave packet to non-Gaussian semiclassical wave packets. We find the symplectic forms and asymptotic expansions of the Hamiltonians associated with these semiclassical wave packets, and obtain Hamiltonian systems governing their dynamics. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the dynamics give a very good approximation to the short-time dynamics of the expectation values computed by a method based on Egorov's Theorem or the Initial Value Representation.
We show that the Siegel upper half space $Σ_{d}$ is identified with the Marsden-Weinstein quotient obtained by symplectic reduction of the cotangent bundle $T^{*}\mathbb{R}^{2d^{2}}$ with $\mathsf{O}(2d)$-symmetry. The reduced symplectic form on $Σ_{d}$ corresponding to the standard symplectic form on $T^{*}\mathbb{R}^{2d^{2}}$ turns out to be a constant multiple of the symplectic form on $Σ_{d}$ obtained by Siegel. Our motivation is to understand the geometry behind two different formulations of the Gaussian wave packet dynamics commonly used in semiclassical mechanics. Specifically, we show …
We prove, using symplectic methods and The Wigner formalism, a refinement of a criterion due to Werner and Wolf for the separability of bipartite Gaussian mixed states in an arbitrary number of dimensions. We use our result to show that one can characterize separability by comparing these states with separable pure Gaussian states.
This paper concerns an approximation of the expectation values of the position and momentum of the solution to the semiclassical Schrödinger equation with a Gaussian as the initial condition. Of particular interest is the approximation obtained by our symplectic/Hamiltonian formulation of the Gaussian wave packet dynamics that introduces a correction term to the conventional formulation using the classical Hamiltonian system by Hagedorn and others. The main result is a proof that our formulation gives a higher-order approximation than the classical formulation does to the expectation value dyn…
An important theorem in Gaussian quantum information tells us that we can diagonalise the covariance matrix of any Gaussian state via a symplectic transformation. Whilst the diagonal form is easy to find, the process for finding the diagonalising symplectic can be more difficult, and a common, existing method requires taking matrix powers, which can be demanding analytically. Inspired by a recently presented technique for finding the eigenvectors of a Hermitian matrix from certain submatrix eigenvalues, we derive a similar method for finding the diagonalising symplectic from certain submatrix …
By elementary matrix algebra we show that every real $2n \times 2n$ matrix admits a dilation to an element of the real symplectic group $Sp (2(n+m))$ for some nonnegative integer $m.$ Our methods do not yield the minimum value of $m,$ for which such a dilation is possible. After listing some of the main properties of Gaussian states in $L^2 (\mathbb{R}^n),$ we analyse the implications of symplectic dilations in the study of quantum Gaussian channels which lead to some interesting open problems, particularly, in the context of the work of Heinosaari, Holevo and Wolf \cite{3}.
We obtain several analogs of real polar decomposition for even dimensional matrices. In particular, we decompose a non-degenerate matrix as a product of a Hamiltonian and an anti-symplectic matrix and under additional requirements we decompose a matrix as a skew-Hamiltonian and a symplectic matrix. We apply our results to study bosonic Gaussian channels up to inhomogeneous symplectic transforms.
The uncertainty relation for continuous variables due to Byalinicki-Birula and Mycielski expresses the complementarity between two $n$-uples of canonically conjugate variables $(x_1,x_2,\cdots x_n)$ and $(p_1,p_2,\cdots p_n)$ in terms of Shannon differential entropy. Here, we consider the generalization to variables that are not canonically conjugate and derive an entropic uncertainty relation expressing the balance between any two $n$-variable Gaussian projective measurements. The bound on entropies is expressed in terms of the determinant of a matrix of commutators between the measured varia…
The Tsallis relative entropy $S_q (\hatρ,\hatσ)$ measures the distance between two arbitrary density matrices $\hatρ$ and $\hatσ$. In this work the approximation to this quantity when $q=1+δ$ ($δ\ll 1$) is obtained. It is shown that the resulting series is equal to the von Neumann relative entropy when $δ=0$. Analyzing the von Neumann relative entropy for arbitrary $\hatρ$ and a thermal equilibrium state $\hatσ=e^{- β\hat{H}}/{\rm Tr}(e^{- β\hat{H}})$ is possible to define a new inequality relating the energy, the entropy, and the partition function of the system. From this inequality, a param…

We show the explicit expression for the covariance matrix of general Gaussian states in terms of the symplectic group matrices. We discuss how the criteria to characterize squeezing and entanglement using the covariance matrix give rise to new criteria in the symplectic matrix elements used to construct the general Gaussian states.
The paper gives a symplectic-geometric account of semiclassical Gaussian wave packet dynamics. We employ geometric techniques to "strip away" the symplectic structure behind the time-dependent Schrödinger equation and incorporate it into semiclassical wave packet dynamics. We show that the Gaussian wave packet dynamics is a Hamiltonian system with respect to the symplectic structure, apply the theory of symplectic reduction and reconstruction to the dynamics, and discuss dynamic and geometric phases in semiclassical mechanics. A simple harmonic oscillator example is worked out to illustrate th…
We derive the invariant measure on the manifold of multimode quantum Gaussian states, induced by the Haar measure on the group of Gaussian unitary transformations. To this end, by introducing a bipartition of the system in two disjoint subsystems, we use a parameterization highlighting the role of nonlocal degrees of freedom -- the symplectic eigenvalues -- which characterize quantum entanglement across the given bipartition. A finite measure is then obtained by imposing a physically motivated energy constraint. By averaging over the local degrees of freedom we finally derive the invariant dis…

The relaxation of a system to a steady state is a central point of interest in many attempts to advance control over the quantum world. In this paper, we consider control through instantaneous Gaussian unitary operations on the ubiquitous lossy channel, and find locally optimal conditions for the cooling and heating of a multimode Gaussian state subject to losses and possibly thermal noise. This is done by isolating the parameters that encode entropy and temperature and by deriving an equation for their evolution. This equation is in such a form that it grants clear insight into how relaxation…
Entropic uncertainty and entanglement are two distinct aspects of quantum mechanical procedures. To estimate entropic uncertainty relations, entropies are used: the greater the entropy bound, the less effective the quantum operations and entanglement are. In this regard, we analyze the entropic uncertainty, entropic uncertainty lower bound, and concurrence dynamics in two non-interacting qubits. The exposure of two qubits is studied in two different qubit-noise configurations, namely, common qubit-noise and independent qubit-noise interactions. To include the noisy effects of the local externa…
Gaussian unitaries are specified by a second order polynomial in the bosonic operators, that is, by a quadratic polynomial and a linear term. From the Hamiltonian other equivalent representations of the Gaussian unitaries are obtained, such as Bogoliubov and real symplectic transformations. The paper develops an alternative representation, called complex symplectic transformation, which is more compact and is comprehensive of both Bogoliubov and real symplectic transformations. Moreover, it has other advantages. One of the main results of the theory, not available in the literature, is that th…
New inequalities for symplectic tomograms of quantum states and their connection with entropic uncertainty relations are discussed within the framework of the probability representation of quantum mechanics.
Werner and Wolf have proven in Phys. Rev. Lett. 86(16) (2001) a very elegant necessary and sufficient condition for a bosonic continuous variable bipartite Gaussian mixed quantum state to be separable. This condition is, however, difficult to implement in practice. In the present Letter, we propose a simpler condition which only involves the calculation of the symplectic matrix in the Williamson diagonalization of the covariance matrix of the state under consideration. The main tool in our construction is the observation, proved in previous work, that the Wigner transform is covariant only und…
We show that a proper expression of the uncertainty relation for a pair of canonically-conjugate continuous variables relies on entropy power, a standard notion in Shannon information theory for real-valued signals. The resulting entropy-power uncertainty relation is equivalent to the entropic formulation of the uncertainty relation due to Bialynicki-Birula and Mycielski, but can be further extended to rotated variables. Hence, based on a reasonable assumption, we give a partial proof of a tighter form of the entropy-power uncertainty relation taking correlations into account and provide exten…
We define an uncertainty observable, acting on several replicas of a continuous-variable bosonic state, whose trivial uncertainty lower bound induces nontrivial phase-space uncertainty relations for a single copy of the state. By exploiting the Schwinger representation of angular momenta in terms of bosonic operators, we construct such an observable that is invariant under symplectic transformations (rotation and squeezing in phase space). We first design a two-copy uncertainty observable, which is a discrete-spectrum operator vanishing with certainty if and only if it is applied on (two copie…
We introduce a classification scheme for the generators of bosonic open Gaussian dynamics, providing instructive diagrams description for each type of dynamics. Using this classification, we discuss the consequences of imposing complete positivity on Gaussian dynamics. In particular, we show that non-symplectic operations must be active to allow for complete positivity. In addition, non-symplectic operations can, in fact, conserve the volume of phase space only if the restriction of complete positivity is lifted. We then discuss the implications for the relationship between information and ene…
We show how to quantify tri-partite entanglement using entropies derived from experimental correlations. We use a multi-partite generalization of the entanglement of formation that is greater than zero if and only if the state is genuinely multi-partite entangled. We develop an entropic witness for tripartite entanglement, and show that the degree of violation of this witness places a lower limit on the tripartite entanglement of formation. We test our results in the three-qubit regime using the GHZ-Werner state and the W-Werner state, and in the high-dimensional pure-state regime using the tr…
Within the framework of the probability representation of quantum mechanics, we study a superposition of generic Gaussian states associated to symmetries of a regular polygon of n sides; in other words, the cyclic groups (containing the rotational symmetries) and dihedral groups (containing the rotational and inversion symmetries). We obtain the Wigner functions and tomographic probability distributions (symplectic and optical tomograms) determining the density matrices of the states explicitly as the sums of Gaussian terms. The obtained Wigner functions demonstrate nonclassical behavior, i.e.…
We express the condition for a phase space Gaussian to be the Wigner distribution of a mixed quantum state in terms of the symplectic capacity of the associated Wigner ellipsoid. Our results are motivated by Hardy's formulation of the uncertainty principle for a function and its Fourier transform. As a consequence we are able to state a more general form of Hardy's theorem.
We prove that the closest Gaussian state to an arbitrary $N$-mode field state through the relative entropy is built with the covariance matrix and the average displacement of the given state. Consequently, the relative entropy of an $N$-mode state to its associate Gaussian one is an exact distance-type measure of non-Gaussianity. In order to illustrate this finding, we discuss the general properties of the $N$-mode Fock-diagonal states and evaluate their exact entropic amount of non-Gaussianity.
It is a long-standing belief, as pointed out by Bell in 1986, that it is impossible to use a two-mode Gaussian state possessing a positive-definite Wigner function to demonstrate nonlocality as the Wigner function itself provides a local hidden-variable model. In particular, when one performs continuous-variable (CV) quadrature measurements upon a routinely generated CV entanglement, namely, the two-mode squeezed vacuum (TMSV) state, the resulting Wigner function is positive-definite and as such, the TMSV state cannot violate any Bell inequality using CV quadrature measurements. We show here, …
Using the tomographic probability distribution (symplectic tomogram) describing the quantum state (instead of the wave function or density matrix) and properties of recently introduced tomographic entropy associated with the probability distribution, the new uncertainty relation for the tomographic entropy is obtained. Examples of the entropic uncertainty relation for squeezed states and solitons of the Bose--Einstein condensate are considered.
