We calculate the geometric phase of a spin-1/2 system driven by a one and two mode quantum field subject to decoherence. Using the quantum jump approach, we show that the corrections to the phase in the no-jump trajectory are different when considering an adiabatic and non-adiabatic evolution. We discuss the implications of our results from both the fundamental as well as quantum computational perspective.
In this paper we introduce a diagnostic for measuring the quantum-classical difference for open quantum systems, which is the normalized size of the quantum terms in the Master equation for Wigner function evolution. For a driven Duffing oscillator, this measure shows remarkably precise scaling over long time-scales with the parameter $ζ_0=\hbar^2/D$. We also see that, independent of $ζ_0$ the dynamics follows a similar pattern. For small $ζ_0$ all of our curves collapses to essentially a single curve when scaled by the maximum value of the quantum-classical difference. In both limits of large…
The geometry of decoherence in generalized "consistent histories" quantum theory is explored, revealing properties of the theory that are independent of any particular application of it. It is shown how the decoherence functional of a closed quantum system may be regarded as an Hermitian form on the space of linear operators on the Hilbert space of the system. This identification makes manifest a number of structural properties of decoherence functionals. For example, a bound on the maximum number of histories in a consistent set is determined. When the decoherence functional is positive -- as…
Beyond the quantum Markov approximation, we calculate the geometric phase of a two-level system driven by a quantized magnetic field subject to phase dephasing. The phase reduces to the standard geometric phase in the weak coupling limit and it involves the phase information of the environment in general. In contrast with the geometric phase in dissipative systems, the geometric phase acquired by the system can be observed on a long time scale. We also show that with the system decohering to its pointer states, the geometric phase factor tends to a sum over the phase factors pertaining to the …
Quantum information technologies demand highly accurate control over quantum systems. Achieving this requires control techniques that perform well despite the presence of decohering noise and other adverse effects. Here, we review a general technique for designing control fields that dynamically correct errors while performing operations using a close relationship between quantum evolution and geometric space curves. This approach provides access to the global solution space of control fields that accomplish a given task, facilitating the design of experimentally feasible gate operations for a…
Geometric phase may enable inherently fault-tolerant quantum computation. However, due to potential decoherence effects, it is important to understand how such phases arise for {\it mixed} input states. We report the first experiment to measure mixed-state geometric phases in optics, using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, and polarization mixed states that are produced in two different ways: decohering pure states with birefringent elements; and producing a nonmaximally entangled state of two photons and tracing over one of them, a form of remote state preparation.
Suppressing undesired nonunitary effects is a major challenge in quantum computation and quantum control. In this work, by considering the adiabatic dynamics in presence of a surrounding environment, we theoretically and experimentally analyze the robustness of adiabaticity in open quantum systems. More specifically, by considering a decohering scenario, we exploit the validity conditions of the adiabatic approximation as well as its sensitiveness to the resonance situation, which typically harm adiabaticity in closed systems. As an illustration, we implement an oscillating Landau-Zener Hamilt…
Correlations in quantum systems exhibit a rich phenomenology under the effect of various sources of noise. We investigate theoretically and experimentally the dynamics of quantum correlations and their classical counterparts in two nuclear magnetic resonance setups, as measured by geometric quantifiers based on trace-norm. We consider two-qubit systems prepared in Bell diagonal states, and perform the experiments in decohering environments resulting from Bell diagonal-preserving Markovian local noise. We then report the first observation of environment-induced double sudden transitions in the …
We introduce an operational framework to analyze non-adiabatic Abelian and non-Abelian, cyclic and non-cyclic, geometric phases in open quantum systems. In order to remove the adiabaticity condition, we generalize the theory of dynamical invariants to the context of open systems evolving under arbitrary convolutionless master equations. Geometric phases are then defined through the Jordan canonical form of the dynamical invariant associated with the super-operator that governs the master equation. As a by-product, we provide a sufficient condition for the robustness of the phase against a give…
Quantum correlations in a composite system can be measured by resorting to a geometric approach, according to which the distance from the state of the system to a suitable set of classically correlated states is considered. Here we show that all distance functions, which respect natural assumptions of invariance under transposition, convexity, and contractivity under quantum channels, give rise to geometric quantifiers of quantum correlations which exhibit the peculiar freezing phenomenon, i.e., remain constant during the evolution of a paradigmatic class of states of two qubits each independe…
The possibility of realization of quantum gates by means of the non-adiabatic geometric phase is considered. It is shown that the non-adiabatic phase can be used for quantum gates realization as well as the adiabatic one.
We present a study of the performance of the trapped-ion driven geometric phase gates introduced in [New J. Phys. 15, 083001 (2013)] when realized in a stimulated Raman transition. We show that the gate can achieve errors below the fault-tolerance threshold in the presence of laser intensity fluctuations. We also find that, in order to reduce the errors due to photon scattering below the fault-tolerance threshold, very intense laser beams are required to allow for large detunings in the Raman configuration without compromising the gate speed.
We describe a hybrid laser-microwave scheme to implement two-qubit geometric phase gates in crystals of trapped ions. The proposed gates can attain errors below the fault-tolerance threshold in the presence of thermal, dephasing, laser-phase, and microwave-intensity noise. Moreover, our proposal is technically less demanding than previous schemes, since it does not require a laser arrangement with interferometric stability. The laser beams are tuned close to a single vibrational sideband to entangle the qubits, while strong microwave drivings provide the geometric character to the gate, and th…
We study the role of driving in an initial maximally entangled state evolving under the presence of a structured environment in a weak and strong regime. We focus on the enhancement and degradation of maximal Concurrence when the system is driven on and out of resonance for a general evolution, as well as the effect of adding a transverse coupling among the particles of the model. We further investigate the role of driving in the acquisition of a geometric phase for the maximally entangled state. As the model studied herein can be used to model experimental situations such as hybrid quantum cl…
We study the role of driving in a two-level system evolving under the presence of a structured environment. We find that adding a periodical modulation to the two-level system can greatly enhance the survival of the geometric phase for many time periods. We show that this effect is mainly important for a markovian regimen but can still be found when the environment exhibits non-markovian behavior as time revivals. This knowledge can aid the search for physical set-ups that best retain quantum properties under dissipative dynamics.

A semiconductor-based charge qubit, confined in double quantum dots, can be a platform to implement quantum computing. However, it suffers severely from charge noises. Here, we provide a theoretical framework to implement universal geometric quantum gates in this system. We find that, while the detuning noise can be suppressed by operating near its corresponding sweet spot, the tunneling noise, on the other hand, is amplified and becomes the dominant source of error for single-qubit gates, a fact previously insufficiently appreciated. We demonstrate, through numerical simulation, that the geom…
We present an information geometric analysis of off-resonance effects on classes of exactly solvable generalized semi-classical Rabi systems. Specifically, we consider population transfer performed by four distinct off-resonant driving schemes specified by su(2; C) time-dependent Hamiltonian models. For each scheme, we study the consequences of a departure from the on-resonance condition in terms of both geodesic paths and geodesic speeds on the corresponding manifold of transition probability vectors. In particular, we analyze the robustness of each driving scheme against off-resonance effect…
We propose a practical protocol to generate and observe a non-Abelian geometric phase using a periodically driven Raman process in the hyperfne ground state manifold of atoms in a dilute ultracold gas. Our analysis is based upon recent developments and application of Floquet theory to periodically driven quantum systems. The simulation results show the non-Abelian gauge transformation and the non-commuting property of the SU(2) transformation operators. Based on these results, we propose a possible experimental implementation with an ultracold dilute Bose gas.
We study a kind of geometric phases for entangled quantum systems, and particularly a spin driven by a magnetic field and entangled with another spin. The new kind of geometric phase is based on an analogy between open quantum systems and dissipative quantum systems which uses a C\ast-module structure. We show that the system presents from the viewpoint of their geometric phases, two behaviours. The first one is identical to the behaviour of an isolated spin driven by a magnetic field, as the problem originally treated by Berry. The second one is specific to the decoherence process. The gauge …
The effect due to the inter-subsystem coupling on the off-diagonal geometric phase in a composite system is investigated. We analyze the case where the system undergo an adiabatic evolution. Two coupled qubits driven by time-dependent external magnetic fields are presented as an example, the off-diagonal geometric phase as well as the adiabatic condition are examined and discussed.
The generalized invariant and its eigenstates of a general quadratic oscillator are found. The Schrödinger wave functions for the eigenstates are also found in analytically closed forms. The conditions for the existence of the cyclic initial state (CIS) are studied and the corresponding nonadiabatic Berry phase is calculated explicitly.
In quantum optics, it is common to assume that atoms are point-like objects compared to the wavelength of the electromagnetic field they interact with. However, this dipole approximation is not always valid, e.g., if atoms couple to the field at multiple discrete points. Previous work has shown that superconducting qubits coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide can behave as such "giant atoms" and then can interact through the waveguide without decohering, a phenomenon that is not possible with small atoms. Here, we show that this decoherence-free interaction is also possible when the coupling …
By example of the nonlinear Kerr-mode driven by a laser, we show that hysteresis phenomena in systems featuring a driven-dissipative phase transition (DPT) can be accurately described in terms of just two collective, dissipative Liouvillian eigenmodes. The key quantities are just two components of a nonabelian geometric connection, even though a single parameter is driven. This powerful geometric approach considerably simplifies the description of driven-dissipative phase transitions, extending the range of computationally accessible parameter regimes, and providing a new starting point for bo…
The influence of intersubsystem coupling on the cyclic adiabatic geometric phase in bipartite systems is investigated. We examine the geometric phase effects for two uniaxially coupled spin$-{1/2}$ particles, both driven by a slowly rotating magnetic field. It is demonstrated that the relation between the geometric phase and the solid angle enclosed by the magnetic field is broken by the spin-spin coupling, in particular leading to a quenching effect on the geometric phase in the strong coupling limit.
We consider a periodically driven quantum system described by a Hamiltonian which is the product of a slowly varying Hermitian operator $V\left(\boldsymbolλ\left(t\right)\right)$ and a dimensionless periodic function with zero average. We demonstrate that the adiabatic evolution of the system within a fully degenerate Floquet band is accompanied by non-Abelian (non-commuting) geometric phases appearing when the slowly varying parameter $\boldsymbolλ=\boldsymbolλ\left(t\right)$ completes a closed loop. The geometric phases can have significant values even after completing a single cycle of the …

We study the effects of the quantum geometric tensor, i.e., the Berry curvature and the Fubini-Study metric, on the steady state of driven-dissipative bosonic lattices. We show that the quantum-Hall-type response of the steady-state wave function in the presence of an external potential gradient depends on all the components of the quantum geometric tensor. Looking at this steady-state Hall response, one can map out the full quantum geometric tensor of a sufficiently flat band in momentum space using a driving field localized in momentum space. We use the two-dimensional Lieb lattice as an exa…
In this work we study the geometrical and topological properties of non-equilibrium quantum systems driven by ac fields. We consider two tunnel coupled spin qubits driven by either spatially homogeneous or inhomogeneous ac fields. Our analysis is an extension of the classical model introduced by Berry with he addition of the spatial degree of freedom. We calculate the Berry and Aharonov-Anandan geometric phases, and demonstrate the influence of the different field parameters in the geometric properties. We also discuss the topological properties associated with the different driving regimes, a…
We propose a machine learning approach based on artificial neural network to gain faster insights on the role of geometric contributions to the nonequilibrium fluctuations of an adiabatically temperature-driven quantum heat engine coupled to a cavity. Using the artificial neural network we have explored the interplay between bunched and antibunched photon exchange statistics for different engine parameters. We report that beyond a pivotal cavity temperature, the Fano factor oscillates between giant and low values as a function of phase difference between the driving protocols. We further obser…
We study information theoretic geometry in time dependent quantum mechanical systems. First, we discuss global properties of the parameter manifold for two level systems exemplified by i) Rabi oscillations and ii) quenching dynamics of the XY spin chain in a transverse magnetic field, when driven across anisotropic criticality. Next, we comment upon the nature of the geometric phase from classical holonomy analyses of such parameter manifolds. In the context of the transverse XY model in the thermodynamic limit, our results are in contradiction to those in the existing literature, and we argue…
We present a general unified approach for the study of quantum thermal machines, including both heat engines and refrigerators, operating under periodic adiabatic driving and in contact with thermal reservoirs kept at different temperatures. We show that many observables characterizing this operating mode and the performance of the machine are of geometric nature. Heat-work conversion mechanisms and dissipation of energy can be described, respectively, by the antisymmetric and symmetric components of a thermal geometric tensor defined in the space of time-dependent parameters generalized to in…
We analyze the dynamics of a two-level system subject to driving by large-amplitude external fields, focusing on the resonance properties in the case of driving around the region of avoided level crossing. In particular, we consider three main questions that characterize resonance dynamics: (1) the resonance condition, (2) the frequency of the resulting oscillations on resonance and (3) the width of the resonance. We identify the regions of validity of different approximations. In a large region of the parameter space, we use a geometric picture in order to obtain both a simple understanding o…
