Squeezed number states for a single mode Hamiltonian are investigated from two complementary points of view. Firstly the more relevant features of their photon distribution are discussed using the WKB wave functions. In particular the oscillations of the distribution and the parity behavior are derived and compared with the exact results. The accuracy is verified and it is shown that for high photon number it fails to reproduce the true distribution. This is contrasted with the fact that for moderate squeezing the WKB approximation gives the analytical justification to the interpretation of the oscillations as the result of the interference of areas with definite phases in phase space. It is shown with a computation at high squeezing using a modified prescription for the phase space representation which is based on Wigner-Cohen distributions that the failure of the WKB approximation does not invalidate the area overlap picture.
Second-order interference and Hanbury-Brown and Twiss type experiments can provide an operational framework for the construction of witness operators that can test classical and nonclassical properties of a Gaussian squeezed state (GSS), and provide entanglement witness operators to study the separability properties of correlated Gaussian squeezed sates.
The interference pattern in electron double-slit diffraction is a hallmark of quantum mechanics. A long standing question for stochastic electrodynamics (SED) is whether or not it is capable of reproducing such effects, as interference is a manifestation of quantum coherence. In this study, we use excited harmonic oscillators to directly test this quantum feature in SED. We use two counter-propagating dichromatic laser pulses to promote a ground-state harmonic oscillator to a squeezed Schrödinger cat state. Upon recombination of the two well-separated wavepackets, an interference pattern emerg…
We derive a semiclassical approximation for the evolution generated by the Lindblad equation as a generalization of complex WKB theory. Linear coupling to the environment is assumed, but the Hamiltonian can be a general function of positions and momenta. The theory is carried out in the chord representation and describes the evolved quantum characteristic function, which gives direct access to the Wigner function and the position representation of the density operator by Fourier transforms. The propagation is shown to be of Liouville type in a complex double phase space, the imaginary part of …
We show how discrete squeezed states in an $N^{2}$-dimensional phase space can be properly constructed out of the finite-dimensional context. Such discrete extensions are then applied to the framework of quantum tomography and quantum information theory with the aim of establishing an initial study on the interference effects between discrete variables in a finite phase-space. Moreover, the interpretation of the squeezing effects is seen to be direct in the present approach, and has some potential applications in different branches of physics.
Two-mode nonlinear interaction (second-harmonic and second-subharmonic generation) in a planar waveguide with a small periodic corrugation at the surface is studied. Scattering of the interacting fields on the corrugation leads to constructive interference that enhances the nonlinear process provided that all the interactions are phase matched. Conditions for the overall phase matching are found. Compared with a perfectly quasi-phase-matched waveguide, better values of squeezing as well as higher intensities are reached under these conditions. Procedure for finding optimum values of parameters…
Distinguishability theory is developed for quantum interference of the squeezed vacuum states on unitary linear interferometers. It is found that the entanglement of photon pairs over the Schmidt modes is one of the sources of distinguishability. The distinguishability is quantified by the symmetric part of the internal state of $n$ pairs of photons, whose normalization $q_{2n}$ is the probability that $2n$ photons interfere as indistinguishable. For two pairs of photons $q_{4}=(1+ 2\mathbb{P} )/3$, where $\mathbb{P} $ is the purity of the squeezed states ($K=1/\mathbb{P} $ is the Schmidt numb…
We propose an efficient approach to generate the superposed macroscopically squeezed states with enhanced squeezing in a two-mode optomechanical system. This can be achieved by introducing a sinusoidal modulation to either the cavity frequencies or the coupling strengths between two cavity modes. The squeezement of the oscillator can be significantly enhanced to 12.16 dB with single photon, once the relative ratio of coupling strength is optimized under proper conditions. Further enhanced squeezing can be obtained by carefully adjusting the system parameters. In terms of the Wigner quasi-proba…
We discuss the Kirkwood-Rihaczek phase space distribution and analyze a whole new class of quasi-distributions connected with this function. All these functions have the correct marginals. We construct a coherent state representation of such functions, discuss which operator ordering corresponds to the Kirkwood-Rihaczek distribution and their generalizations, and show how such states are connected to squeezed states. Quantum interference in the Kirkwood-Rihaczek representation is discussed.
We discuss a phase space description of the photon number distribution of non classical states which is based on Husimi's $Q(α)$ function and does not rely in the WKB approximation. We illustrate this approach using the examples of displaced number states and two photon coherent states and show it to provide an efficient method for computing and interpreting the photon number distribution . This result is interesting in particular for the two photon coherent states which, for high squeezing, have the probabilities of even and odd photon numbers oscillating independently.
We report a scheme for generation of high-order vortex states using two-mode photon-number squeezed states, generated via the non-linear process of Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion. By applying a parametric rotation in quadrature space $(X,Y)$, using a $ϕ$ converter, the Gaussian quadrature profile of the photon-number squeezed input state can be mapped into a superposition of Laguerre-Gauss modes with $N$ vortices or singularities, for an input state containing $N$ photons, thus mapping photon-number fluctuations to interference effects in quadrature space. Our scheme has the potential …
We study the application of squeezed states in a quantum optical scheme for direct sampling of the phase space by photon counting. We prove that the detection setup with a squeezed coherent probe field is equivalent to the probing of the squeezed signal field with a coherent state. An example of the Schroedinger cat state measurement shows that the use of squeezed states allows one to detect clearly the interference between distinct phase space components despite losses through the unused output port of the setup.
Many non-classicality indicators are used to measure quantum effects of different systems. Kenfack's and Sadeghi's non-classicality indicators are introduced in terms of the amount of Wigner function's negativities and interferences in phase space quantum mechanics, respectively. They are, effectively, applied for some real distribution functions. In this paper, we compared these non-classicality indicators for the entangled state of photonic number states in the Wigner, Husimi and Rivier representations. It is shown that for a two-level entangled state, Sadeghi's indicator has more benefits w…
In this paper, we study some quantum properties of a superposition of displaced squeezed two-mode vacuum and single-photon states, such as the second-order correlation function, the Cauchy-Schwartz inequality, quadrature squeezing, quasiprobability distribution functions and purity. This type of states includes two mechanisms, namely, interference in phase space and entanglement. We show that these states can exhibit sub-Piossonian statistics, squeezing and deviate from the classical Cauchy-Schwartz inequality. Moreover, the amount of entanglement in the system can be increased by increasing t…
Squeezed states of light have been improving the sensitivity of gravitational-wave observatories and are nonclassical resources of quantum cryptography and envisioned photonic quantum computers. The higher the squeeze factor is, the higher is the quantum advantage. Almost all applications of squeezed light require multi-path optical interference, whose unavoidable imperfections introduce optical loss, degrade the squeeze factor, as well as the quantum advantage. Here, for the first time, we experimentally demonstrate the distillation of Gaussian squeezed states that suffered from Gaussian phot…
This paper presents some results on some aspects of the two-level atom interacting with a single-mode with the privileged field mode being in the squeezed displaced Fock state (SDFS). The exact results are employed to perform a careful investigation of the temporal evolution of the atomic inversion, entropy and phase distribution. It is shown that the interference between component states leads to non-classical oscillations in the photon number distribution. At mid revival time the field is almost in the pure state. We have briefly discussed the evolution of the Q function of the cavity field.…
When ultrafast laser pulse strikes the crystal with a van Hove singularity in the phonon density of states, it can create a pair of anti-correlated in wave-vector acoustic phonons. As a result, the atomic fluctuations in either position or momentum become squeezed in such a way that their size might fall below the vacuum level. The ultrafast pulses can also generate a two-phonon bound (biphonon) state in which the constituent phonons are correlated and/or entangled. Here we show that via the interplay between one- and two-phonon interference the bound and squeezed two-phonon state in (110) ori…
We study the nonclassicality of the evolution of a superposition of an arbitrary number of photon-added squeezed coherent Schrödinger cat states in a nonlinear Kerr medium. The nonlinearity of the medium gives rise to the periodicities of the quantities such as the Wehrl entropy $S_{Q}$ and the negativity $δ_{W}$ of the $W$-distribution, and a series of local minima of these quantities arise at the rational submultiples of the said period. At these local minima the evolving state coincides with the transient Yurke-Stoler type of photon-added squeezed kitten states, which, for the choice of the…
We investigate the spatial overlap of nonclassical ultrashort light pulses produced by self-phase modulation effect in electronic Kerr media and its relevance in the formation of polarization-squeezed states of light. The light polarization is treated in terms of four quantum Stokes parameters whose spectra of quantum fluctuations are investigated. We show that the frequency at which the suppression of quantum fluctuations of Stokes parameters is the greatest can be controlled by adjusting the linear phase difference between pulses. By varying the intensity of one pulse one can suppress effect…
The ability of matter to be superposed at two different locations while being intrinsically connected by a quantum phase is among the most counterintuitive predictions of quantum physics. While such superpositions have been created for a variety of systems, the in-situ observation of the phase coherence has remained out of reach. Using a heralding measurement on a spin-oscillator entangled state, we project a mechanical trapped-ion oscillator into a superposition of two spatially separated states, a situation analogous to Schrödinger's cat. Quantum interference is clearly observed by extractin…
We propose an analytical approach to high-harmonic generation (HHG) for nonperturbative low-frequency and high-intensity fields based on the (Jeffreys-)Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation. By properly taking into account Stokes phenomena of WKB solutions, we obtain wavefunctions that systematically include the repetitive dynamics of production and acceleration of electron-hole pairs and quantum interference due to phase accumulation between different pair production times (Stückelberg phase). Using the obtained wavefunctions without relying on any phenomenological assumptions, we exp…
We study non-Gaussian states generated by two-photon subtraction from a cw squeezed light source. In a cw scheme one can subtract two photons from the source with a designated time separation and can genarate temporally multiplexed superposition states of continuous variables. We numerically study the properties of these states in the light of bosonic interference in the time domain. In an appropriate temporal mode amplified kittens are produced in a region where the time separation is comparable with the correlation time of squeezed packets.
A parity-dependent squeezing operator is introduced which imposes different SU(1,1) rotations on the even and odd subspaces of the harmonic oscillator Hilbert space. This operator is used to define parity-dependent squeezed states which exhibit highly nonclassical properties such as strong antibunching, quadrature squeezing, strong oscillations in the photon-number distribution, etc. In contrast to the usual squeezed states whose $Q$ and Wigner functions are simply Gaussians, the parity-dependent squeezed states have much more complicated $Q$ and Wigner functions that exhibit an interesting in…
Interference between an unknown two-photon state (a "biphoton") and the two-photon component of a reference state gives a phase-sensitive arrival-time distribution containing full information about the biphoton temporal wave function. Using a coherent state as a reference, we observe this interference and reconstruct the wave function of single-mode biphotons from a low-intensity narrowband squeezed vacuum state.
We characterize a periodically poled KTP crystal that produces an entangled, two-mode, squeezed state with orthogonal polarizations, nearly identical, factorizable frequency modes, and few photons in unwanted frequency modes. We focus the pump beam to create a nearly circular joint spectral probability distribution between the two modes. After disentangling the two modes, we observe Hong-Ou-Mandel interference with a raw (background corrected) visibility of 86 % (95 %) when an 8.6 nm bandwidth spectral filter is applied. We measure second order photon correlations of the entangled and disentan…
Squeezed states of light reduce the signal-normalized photon counting noise of measurements without increasing the light power and enable fundamental research on quantum entanglement in hybrid systems of light and matter. Furthermore, the completion of squeezed states with cryo-cooling has high potential. First, measurement sensitivities are usually limited by quantum noise and thermal noise. Second, squeezed states allow for reducing the heat load on cooled devices without losing measurement precision. Here, we demonstrate squeezed-light position sensing of a cryo-cooled micro-mechanical memb…
Continuous variable entanglement can be produced in nonlinear systems or via interference of squeezed states. In many of optical systems, such as parametric down conversion or interference of optical squeezed states, production of two perfectly symmetric subsystems is usually used for demonstrating the existence of entanglement. This symmetry simplifies the description of the concept of entanglement. However, asymmetry in entanglement may arise naturally in a real experiment, or be intentionally introduced in a given quantum information protocol. These asymmetries can emerge from having the ou…
It is shown that the maximal phase sensitivity of a two-path interferometer with high-intensity coherent light and squeezed vacuum in the input ports can be achieved by photon-number-resolving detection of only a small number of photons in a dark output port. It is then possible to achieve the quantum Cramér-Rao bound of the two-path interferometer using only the field displacement dependence of the photon number statistics in the single mode output of the dark port represented by a field-displaced squeezed vacuum state. We find that, at small field displacements, it is not sufficient to use t…
Continuous-variable quantum-computing (CVQC) is the most scalable implementation of QC to date but requires non-Gaussian resources to allow exponential speedup and quantum correction, using error encoding such as Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) states. However, GKP state generation is still an experimental challenge. We show theoretically that photon catalysis, the interference of coherent states with single-photon states followed by photon-number-resolved detection, is a powerful enabler for non-Gaussian quantum state engineering such as exactly displaced single-photon states and $M$-symmetri…
We apply geometric phase ideas to coherent states to shed light on interference phenomenon in the phase space description of continuous variable Cartesian quantum systems. In contrast to Young's interference characterized by path lengths, phase space interference turns out to be determined by areas. The motivating idea is Pancharatnam's concept of "being in phase" for Hilbert space vectors. Applied to the overcomplete family of coherent states, we are led to preferred one-dimensional integral representations for various states of physical significance, such as the position, momentum, Fock stat…
Bright squeezed vacuum (BSV) is a non-classical macroscopic state of light, which can be generated through high-gain parametric down-conversion or four-wave mixing. Although BSV is an important tool in quantum optics and has a lot of applications, its theoretical description is still not complete. In particular, the existing description in terms of Schmidt modes fails to explain the spectral broadening observed in experiment as the mean number of photons increases. On the other hand, the semi-classical description accounting for the broadening does not allow to decouple the intermodal photon-n…
We analyze generalized Gaussian cat states obtained by superposing arbitrary Gaussian states, e.g., a coherent state and a squeezed state. The Wigner functions of such states exhibit the typical pair of Gaussian hills plus an interference term which presents a novel structure, as compared with the standard superposition of coherent states (degenerate case). We prove that, in any dimensions, the structure of the interference term is characterized by a particular quadratic form; in one degree of freedom the phase is hyperbolic. This phase-space structure survives the action of a thermal reservoi…
We generalize a new approach to entanglement conditions for light of undefined photons numbers given in [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 95}, 042113 (2017)] for polarization correlations to a broader family of interferometric phenomena. Integrated optics allows one to perform experiments based upon multiport beamsplitters. To observe entanglement effects one can use multi-mode parametric down-conversion emissions. When the structure of the Hamiltonian governing the emissions has (infinitely) many equivalent Schmidt decompositions into modes (beams), one can have perfect EPR-like correlations of numbers of p…
Interferences in the distributions of complementary variables for angular momentum - two level systems are discussed. A quantum phase distribution is introduced for angular momentum. Explicit results for the phase distributions and the number distributions for atomic coherent states, squeezed states and superpositions of coherent states are given. These results clearly demonstrate the issue of complementarity and provide us with results analogous to those for the radiation field.
We show how the photon statistics emitted by a large variety of light-matter systems under weak coherent driving can be understood, to lowest order in the driving, in the framework of an admixture of (or interference between) a squeezed state and a coherent state, with the resulting state accounting for all bunching and antibunching features. One can further identify two mechanisms that produce resonances for the photon correlations: i) conventional statistics describes cases that involve a particular quantum level or set of levels in the excitation/emission processes with interferences occurr…

Squeezed-vacuum twin beams, commonly generated through parametric down-conversion, are known to have perfect photon-number correlations. According to the Heisenberg principle, this is accompanied by a huge uncertainty in their relative phase. By overlapping bright twin beams on a beam splitter, we convert phase fluctuations into photon-number fluctuations and observe this uncertainty as a typical `U-shape' of the output photon-number distribution. This effect, although reported for atomic ensembles and giving hope for phase super-resolution, has been never observed for light beams. The shape o…
We witness experimentally the presence of macroscopic coherence in Gaussian quantum states using a recently proposed criterion (E.G. Cavalcanti and M. Reid, Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 170405 (2006)). The macroscopic coherence stems from interference between macroscopically distinct states in phase space and we prove experimentally that even the vacuum state contains these features with a distance in phase space of $0.51\pm0.02$ shot noise units (SNU). For squeezed states we found macroscopic superpositions with a distance of up to $0.83\pm0.02$ SNU. The proof of macroscopic quantum coherence was inv…
Two-mode squeezed states are scalable and robust entanglement resources for continuous-variable and hybrid quantum information protocols at a distance. We consider the effect of a linear cross talk in the multimode distribution of two-mode squeezed states propagating through parallel similar channels. First, to reduce degradation of the distributed Gaussian entanglement, we show that the initial two-mode squeezing entering the channel should be optimized already in the presence of a small cross talk. Second, we suggest simultaneous optimization of relative phase between the modes and their lin…
Sources of quantum light, in particular correlated photon pairs that are indistinguishable in all degrees of freedom, are the fundamental resource that enables continuous-variable quantum computation and paradigms such as Gaussian boson sampling. Nanophotonic systems offer a scalable platform for implementing sources of indistinguishable correlated photon pairs. However, such sources have so far relied on the use of a single component, such as a single waveguide or a ring resonator, which offers limited ability to tune the spectral and temporal correlations between photons. Here, we demonstrat…
The Wigner function W(q,p) is formulated as a phase-space path integral, whereby its sign oscillations can be seen to follow from interference between the geometrical phases of the paths. The approach has similarities to the path-centroid method in the configuration-space path integral. Paths can be classified by the mid-point of their ends; short paths where the mid-point is close to (q,p) and which lie in regions of low energy (low P function of the Hamiltonian) will dominate, and the enclosed area will determine the sign of the Wigner function. As a demonstration, the method is applied to a…
We show how to reach high fidelity NOON states with a high count rate inside optical interferometers. Recently it has been shown that by mixing squeezed and coherent light at a beamsplitter it is possible to generate NOON states of arbitrary N with a fidelity as high as 94%. (Afek I. et al. Science 328, 879 (2010)). The scheme is based on higher order interference between "quantum" down-converted light and "classical" coherent light. However, this requires optimizing the amplitude ratio of classical to quantum light thereby limiting the overall count rate for the interferometric super-resoluti…
The Michelson interferometer is a cornerstone of experimental physics. Its applications range from providing first impressions of wave interference in educational settings to probing spacetime at minuscule precision scales. Interferometer precision provides a unique view of the fundamental medium of matter and energy, enabling tests for new physics as well as searches for the gravitational wave signatures of distant astrophysical events. Optical interferometers are typically operated by continuously measuring the power at their output port. Signal perturbations then create sideband fields, for…
Parametric down-conversion (PDC) is mostly known in the low-gain (spontaneous) regime, in which the correlated photon pairs are produced. Spontaneous PDC (SPDC) plays a very important role for quantum optics as a variety of quantum states is produced via SPDC. In the high-gain case PDC leads to generation of bright states having up to hundreds mW mean power. With such states almost any nonlinear optical interaction or light-matter interaction becomes more efficient. Even being macroscopically bright, the produced states maintain nonclassical properties as, for example, the fluctuations of elec…
