We argue that (first-order) coherence is a relative, and not an absolute, property. It is shown how feedforward or feedback can be employed to make two (or more) lasers relatively coherent. We also show that after the relative coherence is established, the two lasers will stay relatively coherent for some time even if the feedforward or feedback loop has been turned off, enabling, e.g., demonstration of unconditional quantum teleportation using lasers.

A two-site Ising model is implemented as an injection-locked laser network consisting of a single master laser and two mutually coupled slave lasers. We observed ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders in the in-phase and out-of-phase couplings between the two slave lasers. Their phase difference is locked to either 0 or p even if the coupling path is continuously modulated. The system automatically selects the oscillation frequency to satisfy the in-phase or out-of-phase coupling condition, when the mutual coupling dominates over the injection-locking by the master laser.
Aberg has claimed in a recent Letter," Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 150402 (2014)", that the coherence of a reservoir can be used repeatedly to perform coherent operations without ever diminishing in power to do so. The claim has particular relevance for quantum thermodynamics because, as shown in "Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 150402 (2014)", latent energy that is locked by coherence may be extractable without incurring any additional cost. We show here, however, that repeated use of the reservoir gives an overall coherent operation of diminished accuracy and is necessarily accompanied by an increased therm…
Quantum coherence, the ability to control the phases in superposition states is a resource, and it is of crucial importance, therefore, to understand how it is consumed in use. It has been suggested that catalytic coherence is possible, that is repeated use of the coherence without degradation or reduction in performance. The claim has particular relevance for quantum thermodynamics because, were it true, it would allow free energy that is locked in coherence to be extracted $\textit{indefinitely}$. We address this issue directly with a careful analysis of the proposal by $Å$berg. We find that…
Analysis of the recently proposed thought experiment with the path entangled photon pairs is extended here to spin entangled electron pairs. The detailed comparison of the two cases showed the range of distinctions and similarities in their monitoring. The general results contradict the Concurrency Rule stating that intimately linked characteristics of a simple system must change concurrently under changing conditions. Instead, the analysis showed that the systems coherence, while changing continuously with entanglement strength on the global scale, remains zero on the local level. This effect…
Quantum information is a common topic of research in many areas of quantum physics, such as quantum communication and quantum computation, as well as quantum thermodynamics. It can be encoded in discrete or continuous variable systems, with the appropriated formalism to treat it generally depending on the quantum system to be chosen. For continuous variable systems, it is convenient to employ a quasi-probability function to represent quantum states and non-classical signatures. The Wigner function is a special quasi-probability function because it allows to describe a quantum system in the pha…
Observation of the First-Order Interference Fringes Beyond Coherence Length Employing Commercial Continuous-wave Multi-mode Laser Diode: A Sight of Two-photon Interference
Quantum coherence, incompatibility, and quantum correlations are fundamental features of quantum physics. A unified view of those features is crucial for revealing quantitatively their intrinsic connections. We define the relative quantum coherence of two states as the coherence of one state in the reference basis spanned by the eigenvectors of another one and establish its quantitative connections with the extent of mutual incompatibility of two states. We also show that the proposed relative quantum coherence, which can take any form of measures such as $l_1$ norm and relative entropy, can b…
We report the generation of five phase-locked harmonics, f_1: 2403 nm, f_2: 1201 nm, f_3: 801 nm, f_4: 600 nm, and f_5: 480 nm with an exact frequency ratio of 1 : 2 : 3 : 4 : 5 by implementing a divide-by-three optical-frequency divider in the high harmonic generation process. All five harmonics are generated coaxially with high phase coherence in time and space, which are applicable for various practical uses.
Various measures have been suggested recently for quantifying the coherence of a quantum state with respect to a given basis. We first use two of these, the l_1-norm and relative entropy measures, to investigate tradeoffs between the coherences of mutually unbiased bases. Results include relations between coherence, uncertainty and purity; tight general bounds restricting the coherences of mutually unbiased bases; and an exact complementarity relation for qubit coherences. We further define the average coherence of a quantum state. For the l_1-norm measure this is related to a natural 'coheren…
Many practical sampling patterns for function approximation on the rotation group utilizes regular samples on the parameter axes. In this paper, we relate the mutual coherence analysis for sensing matrices that correspond to a class of regular patterns to angular momentum analysis in quantum mechanics and provide simple lower bounds for it. The products of Wigner d-functions, which appear in coherence analysis, arise in angular momentum analysis in quantum mechanics. We first represent the product as a linear combination of a single Wigner d-function and angular momentum coefficients, otherwis…
We develop differential measurement protocols that circumvent the laser noise limit in the stability of optical clock comparisons by synchronous probing of two clocks using phase-locked local oscillators. This allows for probe times longer than the laser coherence time, avoids the Dick effect, and supports Heisenberg-limited measurement precision. We present protocols for such frequency comparisons and develop numerical simulations of the protocols with realistic noise sources. These methods provide a route to reduce frequency ratio measurement durations by more than an order of magnitude.
We present an experimental study on the non-equilibrium tunnel dynamics of two coupled one-dimensional Bose-Einstein quasi-condensates deep in the Josephson regime. Josephson oscillations are initiated by splitting a single one-dimensional condensate and imprinting a relative phase between the superfluids. Regardless of the initial state and experimental parameters, the dynamics of the relative phase and atom number imbalance shows a relaxation to a phase-locked steady state. The latter is characterized by a high phase coherence and reduced fluctuations with respect to the initial state. We pr…
We demonstrate time-resolved nonlinear extreme-ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy on multiply charged ions, here applied to the doubly charged neon ion, driven by a phase-locked sequence of two intense free-electron laser pulses. Absorption signatures of resonance lines due to 2$p$--3$d$ bound--bound transitions between the spin-orbit multiplets $^3$P$_{0,1,2}$ and $^3$D$_{1,2,3}$ of the transiently produced doubly charged Ne$^{2+}$ ion are revealed, with time-dependent spectral changes over a time-delay range of $(2.4\pm0.3)\,\text{fs}$. Furthermore, we observe 10-meV-scale spectral shifts o…
Establishing quantum correlations between two remote parties by sending an information carrier is an essential step of many protocols in quantum information processing. We obtain trade-off relations between discords and coherence within a bipartite system. Then we study the distribution of coherence in a bipartite quantum state by using the relations of relative entropy and mutual information. We show that the increase of the relative entropy of discord between two remote parties is bounded by the nonclassical correlations quantified by the relative entropy of coherence between the carrier and…
We investigate quantum phase transitions and quantum coherence in infinite biquadratic spin-1 and -2 XY chains with rhombic single-ion anisotropy. All considered coherence measures such as the $l_1$ norm of coherence, the relative entropy of coherence, and the quantum Jensen-Shannon divergence, and the quantum mutual information show consistently that singular behaviors occur for the spin-1 system, which enables to identity quantum phase transitions. For the spin-2 system, the relative entropy of coherence and the quantum mutual information properly detect no singular behavior in the whole sys…
We find two relations between coherence and path-information in a multi-path interferometer. The first builds on earlier results for the two-path interferometer, which used minimum-error state discrimination between detector states to provide the path information. For visibility, which was used in the two-path case, we substitute a recently defined $l_{1}$ measure of quantum coherence. The second is an entropic relation in which the path information is characterized by the mutual information between the detector states and the outcome of the measurement performed on them, and the coherence mea…
We show how coherences between identical constituents of a many-body quantum state can be interrogated by suitable correlation functions, and identify sufficient conditions under which low-order correlators fully characterize many-body coherences, as controlled by the constituents' mutual distinguishability. Comparison of correlators of different order detects many-body entanglement.
Coherence and correlations represent two related properties of a compound system. The system can be, for instance, the polarization of a photon, which forms part of a polarization-entangled two-photon state, or the spatial shape of a coherent beam, where each spatial mode bears different polarizations. Whereas a local unitary transformation of the system does not affect its coherence, global unitary transformations modifying both the system and its surroundings can enhance its coherence, transforming mutual correlations into coherence. The question naturally arises of what is the best measure …
