Several recent experiments have demonstrated the promise of atomic ensembles for quantum teleportation and quantum memory. In these cases the collective internal state of the atoms is well described by continuous variables $X_1, P_1$ and the interaction with the optical field ($X_2, P_2$) by a quadratic Hamiltonian $X_1X_2$. We show how this interaction can be used optimally to create entanglement and squeezing. We derive conditions for the efficient simulation of quadratic Hamiltonians and the engineering of all Gaussian operations and states.
We determine the entanglement capability of self-inverse Hamiltonian evolution, which reduces to the known result for Ising Hamiltonian, and identify optimal input states for yielding the maximal entanglement rate. We introduce the concept of the operator entanglement rate, and find that the maximal operator entanglement rate gives a lower bound on the entanglement capability of a general Hamiltonian.
We study the time evolution of the amount of entanglement generated by one dimensional spin-1/2 Ising-type Hamiltonians composed of many-body interactions. We investigate sets of states randomly selected during the time evolution generated by several types of time-independent Hamiltonians by analyzing the distributions of the amount of entanglement of the sets. We compare such entanglement distributions with that of typical entanglement, entanglement of a set of states randomly selected from a Hilbert space with respect to the unitarily invariant measure. We show that the entanglement distribu…
We quantify the capability of creating entanglement for a general physical interaction acting on two qubits. We give a procedure for optimizing the generation of entanglement. We also show that a Hamiltonian can create more entanglement if one uses auxiliary systems.
The notion of capacity of entanglement is the quantum information theoretic counterpart of the heat capacity which is defined as the second cumulant of the entanglement spectrum. Given any bipartite pure state, we can define the capacity of entanglement as the variance of the modular Hamiltonian in the reduced state of any of the subsystems. Here, we study the dynamics of this quantity under non-local Hamiltonian. Specifically, we address the question: Given an arbitrary non-local Hamiltonian what is the capacity of entanglement that the system can possess? As an useful application, we show th…
We provide the first solution of a time-dependent metric operator for the non-Hermitian Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian. We use this solution to calculate the entanglement between two identical isolated such Hamiltonians. The presence of a non-Hermitian interaction term leads to a spontaneously broken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric regime which manifests itself in the exotic time-evolution of entanglement. When the symmetry is broken, oscillatory modes transition into decay. As such that there is a drastic difference in behaviour between the broken and unbroken regimes.
We show that the general Heisenberg Hamiltonian with non-uniform couplings can be characterised by mapping the entanglement it generates as a function of time. Identification of the Hamiltonian in this way is possible as the coefficients of each operator control the oscillation frequencies of the entanglement function. The number of measurements required to achieve a given precision in the Hamiltonian parameters is determined and an efficient measurement strategy designed. We derive the relationship between the number of measurements, the resulting precision and the ultimate discrete error pro…
We develop a geometric approach to quantify the capability of creating entanglement for a general physical interaction acting on two qubits. We use the entanglement measure proposed by us for $N$-qubit pure states (PRA \textbf{77}, 062334 (2008)). Our procedure reproduces the earlier results (PRL \textbf{87}, 137901 (2001)). The geometric method has the distinct advantage that it gives an experimental way to monitor the process of optimizing entanglement production.
In this article we investigate the unitary dynamics of squashed entanglement and concurrence measures in Werner state and maximally entangled mixed states (MEMS) under two different Hamiltonians. The aim of the present study is two fold. The first part of the study deals with the dynamics under Heisenberg Hamiltonian and the second part deals under bi-linear bi-quadratic Hamiltonian which is the extension of first Hamiltonian. In both the parts we investigate the dynamical trade off and balancing points for squashed entanglement and concurrence. During the study, we also found the results of e…
The relation between level crossings, entanglement, and Berry phases is investigated for the Breit-Rabi Hamiltonian of hydrogen and sodium atoms, describing a hyperfine interaction of electron and nuclear spins in a magnetic field. It is shown that the entanglement between nuclear and electron spins is maximum at avoided crossings. An entangled state encircling avoided crossings acquires a marginal Berry phase of a subsystem like an instantaneous eigenstate moving around real crossings accumulates a Berry phase. Especially, the nodal points of a marginal Berry phase correspond to the avoided c…
We investigate the possibility to obtain higly multipartite-entangled states as nondegenerate eigenstates of Hamiltonians that involve only short-range and few-body interactions. We study small-size systems (with a number of qubits ranging from three to five) and search for Hamiltonians with a Maximally Multipartite Entangled State (MMES) as a nondegenerate eigenstate. We then find conditions, including bounds on the number of coupled qubits, to build a Hamiltonian with a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state as a nondegenerate eigenstate. We finally comment on possible applications.
We present analytical compact solution for the density matrix and correlation functions of two collective-macroscopic spins evolving via Ising-like Hamiltonian in the presence of particle losses. The losses introduce non-local phase noise which destroys highly entangled states arising in the evolution. On the other hand, the states appearing at relatively short timescales, possessing EPR-like entanglement will survive. Applying our solutions to the recently proposed scheme to entangle two Bose-Einstein condensates, we estimate the optimal number of atoms for EPR correlations.
We devise and examine two procrustean entanglement concentration schemes using Quantum Non- Demolition (QND) interaction Hamiltonians in the continuous variable regime, applicable for light, for atomic ensembles or in a hybrid setting. We thus expand the standard entanglement distillation toolbox to the use of a much more general, versatile and experimentally feasible interaction class. The first protocol uses Gaussian ancillary modes and a non-Gaussian post-measurement, the second a non-Gaussian ancillary mode and a Gaussian post-measurement. We explicitly calculate the density matrix element…
Quantum entanglement is considered, by and large, to be a very delicate and non-robust phenomenon that is very hard to maintain in the presence of noise, or non-zero temperatures. In recent years however, and motivated, in part, by a quest for a quantum analog of the PCP theorem researches have tried to establish whether or not we can preserve quantum entanglement at "constant" temperatures that are independent of system size. This would imply that any quantum state with energy at most, say 0.05 of the total available energy of the Hamiltonian, would be highly-entangled. To this date, no such …
We show that the entanglement dynamics for a closed two-qubit system is part of a 10-dimensional complex linear differential equation defined on a supersphere, and the coefficients therein are completely determined by the Hamiltonian. We apply the result to investigate two physical examples of Josephson junction qubits and exchange Hamiltonians, deriving analytic solutions for the time evolution of entanglement. The Hamiltonian coefficients determines whether the entanglement is periodic. These results allow of investigating how to generate and manipulate entanglements efficiently, which are r…
We show that intrinsic fluctuations in system control parameters impose limits on the ability of two-qubit (exchange) Hamiltonians to generate entanglement starting from mixed initial states. We find three classes for Gaussian and Laplacian fluctuations. For the Ising and XYZ models there are qualitatively distinct sharp entanglement-generation transitions, while the class of Heisenberg, XY, and XXZ Hamiltonians is capable of generating entanglement for any finite noise level. Our findings imply that exchange Hamiltonians are surprisingly robust in their ability to generate entanglement in the…
In this paper the entanglement of multi-qubit fermionic pseudo Hermitian coherent states (FPHCS) described by anticommutative Grassmann numbers is studied. The pseudo-Hermitian versions of the well known maximally entangled pure states such as Bell and GHZ, W and biseparable states are introduced through integrating over the tensor products of FPHCSs with suitable choice of Grassmannian weight functions. Meanwhile as an illustration, the method is applied to tensor product of 2 and 3 qubit pseudo Hermitian systems. Then the measures of concurrence and average entropy are applied to quantify th…
We establish a novel procedure to analyze the entanglement properties of extremal density matrices depending on the parameters of a finite dimensional Hamiltonian. It was applied to a general 2-qubit Hamiltonian which could exhibit Kramers degeneracy. This is done through the extremal density matrix formalism, which allows to extend the conventional variational principle to mixed states. By applying the positive partial transpose criterion in terms of the Correlation and Schlienz-Mahler matrices on the extremal density matrices, we demonstrate that it is possible to reach both pure and mixed e…
By using the quantum Yang-Baxterization approach, we investigate the dynamics of quantum entanglement under the actions of different Hamiltonians on the different two-qubit input states and analyze the effects of the Yang-Baxter operations on it. During any quantum process that takes place in a noisy environment, quantum correlations display behavior that does not increase. We point out that for two-qubit systems subject to actions of different Yang-Baxter operations the loss of correlations can be mitigated by the appropriate choice of the initial states and the Yang-Baxterization process. We…
An exactly soluble non-linear interaction Hamiltonian is proposed to study fundamental properties of the entanglement dynamics for a coupled non-linear oscillators. The time-evolved state is obtained analytically for initial products of two coherent and two number states and relevant informations are extracted from the dynamics of various quantities like subsystem linear and Von Neumann entropies, quadrature mean values, variances and Q-functions. We determined the re-coherence time scales and found among the interaction terms present in the Hamiltonian the one responsible for the entanglement…
We develop theoretical and numerical tools for the quantification of entanglement in systems with continuous degrees of freedom. Continuous variable entanglement swapping is introduced and based on this idea we develop methods of entanglement purification for continuous variable systems. The success of these entanglement purification methods is then assessed using these tools.
Entanglement is the crucial ingredient of quantum many-body physics, and characterizing and quantifying entanglement in closed system dynamics of quantum simulators is an outstanding challenge in today's era of intermediate scale quantum devices. Here we discuss an efficient tomographic protocol for reconstructing reduced density matrices and entanglement spectra for spin systems. The key step is a parametrization of the reduced density matrix in terms of an entanglement Hamiltonian involving only quasi local few-body terms. This ansatz is fitted to, and can be independently verified from, a s…
Preparing many body entangled states efficiently using available interactions is a challenging task. One solution may be to couple a system collectively with a probe that leaves residual entanglement in the system. We investigate the entanglement produced between two possibly distant qubits 1 and 2 that interact locally with a third qubit 3 under unitary evolution generated by pairwise Hamiltonians. For the case where the Hamiltonians commute, relevant to certain quantum nondemolition measurements, the entanglement between qubits 1 and 2 is calculated explicitly for several classes of initial …
We give a protocol and criteria for demonstrating unconditional teleportation of continuous-variable entanglement (i.e., entanglement swapping). The initial entangled states are produced with squeezed light and linear optics. We show that any nonzero entanglement (any nonzero squeezing) in both of two entanglement sources is sufficient for entanglement swapping to occur. In fact, realization of continuous-variable entanglement swapping is possible using only {\it two} single-mode squeezed states.
The entanglement produced by a bilinear Hamiltonian in continuous variables has been thoroughly studied and widely used. In contrast, the physics of entanglement resulting from nonlinear interaction described by partially degenerate high-order Hamiltonians remains unclear. Here, we derive a hierarchy of sufficient and necessary conditions for the positive-partial-transposition separability of bipartite nonlinear quantum states. The proposed criteria detect the nonpositive-partial-transposition inseparability of higher-order moments of states, which provides a systematic framework for the chara…
We compute the asymptotic entanglement capacity of the Ising interaction ZZ, the anisotropic Heisenberg interaction XX + YY, and more generally, any two-qubit Hamiltonian with canonical form K = a XX + b YY. We also describe an entanglement assisted classical communication protocol using the Hamiltonian K with rate equal to the asymptotic entanglement capacity.
Entanglement detection and estimation are fundamental in quantum information science. Compared with discrete-variable states, for which lots of efficient entanglement detection criteria and lower bounds of entanglement measures have been proposed, the continuous-variable entanglement is much less understood. Here we shall present a family of entanglement witnesses based on continuous-variable local orthogonal observables (CVLOOs) to detect and estimate entanglement of Gaussian and non-Gaussian states, especially for bound entangled states. By choosing an optimal set of CVLOOs our entanglement …
Entanglement is a crucial resource in quantum information theory. We investigate the use of different forms of entangled states in continuous variable quantum teleportation, specifically the use of a finite-basis entanglement resource. We also consider the continuous variable teleportation of finite-basis states, such as qubits, and present results that point to the possibility of an efficient conditional scheme for continuous variable teleportation of such states with near-unit fidelity using finite-basis entanglement.
In contrast to classical systems, actual implementation of non-Hermitian Hamiltonian dynamics for quantum systems is a challenge because the processes of energy gain and dissipation are based on the underlying Hermitian system-environment dynamics that is trace preserving. Recently, a scheme for engineering non-Hermitian Hamiltonians as a result of repetitive measurements on an anicillary qubit has been proposed. The induced conditional dynamics of the main system is described by the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian arisng from the procedure. In this paper we demonstrate the effectiveness o…
This article discusses entanglement between two subsystems, one with discrete degrees of freedom and the other with continuous degrees of freedom. The overlap integral between continuous variable wave functions emerges as an important parameter to characterize this kind entanglement. ``Beam-like'' entanglement and ``shape-like'' entanglement are contrasted. One example of this kind of entanglement is between between the spin degrees of freedom and the momentum degrees of freedom for a non-relativistic particle. This intraparticle entanglement is Galilean invariant.
We theoretically show that bright six-partite continuous-variable entanglement can be generated using cascaded four-wave mixing effects of third-order nonlinearity atomic systems above threshold. The six-partite continuous-variable entanglement among the six cavity fields with different frequencies is analyzed by applying optimized inseparability criteria proposed by Van Loock and Furusawa.
Entanglement in the ground state of a many-body quantum system may arise when the local terms in the system Hamiltonian fail to commute with the interaction terms in the Hamiltonian. We quantify this phenomenon, demonstrating an analogy between ground-state entanglement and the phenomenon of frustration in spin systems. In particular, we prove that the amount of ground-state entanglement is bounded above by a measure of the extent to which interactions frustrate the local terms in the Hamiltonian. As a corollary, we show that the amount of ground-state entanglement is bounded above by a ratio …
We examine whether it is possible for one-dimensional translationally-invariant Hamiltonians to have ground states with a high degree of entanglement. We present a family of translationally invariant Hamiltonians {H_n} for the infinite chain. The spectral gap of H_n is Omega(1/poly(n)). Moreover, for any state in the ground space of H_n and any m, there are regions of size m with entanglement entropy Omega(min{m,n}). A similar construction yields translationally-invariant Hamiltonians for finite chains that have unique ground states exhibiting high entanglement. The area law proven by Hastings…
We investigate two methods to reconstruct Hamiltonians of quantum matter, using a quantum spin chain to test them. The first method uses correlation functions and the second method uses entanglement spectra. The two methods are not specific to spin chains, and may find wider applicability to quantum matter that is sufficiently well characterized by experiment.
Starting from arbitrary Hilbert spaces, we reduce the problem to verify entanglement of any bipartite quantum state to finite dimensional subspaces. Hence, entanglement is a finite dimensional property. A generalization for multipartite quantum states is also given.
We present a model to realize quantum feedback control of continuous variable entanglement. It consists of two interacting bosonic modes subject to amplitude damping and achieving entangled Gaussian steady state. The possibility to greatly improve the degree of entanglement by means of Markovian (direct) feedback is then shown.
The entanglement Hamiltonian $H_E$, defined through the reduced density matrix of a subsystem $ρ_A=\exp(-H_E)$, is an important concept in understanding the nature of quantum entanglement in many-body systems and quantum field theories. In this work, we explore a numerical scheme which explicitly reconstructs the entanglement Hamiltonian using one entangled mode (i.e., an eigenstate) of $ρ_A$. We demonstrate and benchmark this scheme on quantum spin lattice models. The resulting $H_E$ bears a form similar to a physical Hamiltonian with spatially varying couplings, which allows us to make quant…
We suggest an experimentally realizable scheme to test entanglement of a mixed Gaussian continuous variable state. We find that the entanglement condition is simplified for the family of Gaussian states which are relevant to experimental realization. The entanglement condition is then shown to be directly related to joint homodyne measurements. We show how robust the proposed test of entanglement is against imperfect detection efficiency.
We explore the possibility of entanglement detection in continuous variable systems by entanglement witnesses based on covariance matrices, constructible from random homodyne measurements. We propose new linear constraints characterizing the entanglement witnesses based on second moments, and use them in a semidefinite program providing the optimal entanglement test for given random measurements. We test the method on the class of squeezed vacuum states and study the efficiency of entanglement detection in general unknown covariance matrices.
We introduce a multi-mode squeezing coefficient to characterize entanglement in $N$-partite continuous-variable systems. The coefficient relates to the squeezing of collective observables in the $2N$-dimensional phase space and can be readily extracted from the covariance matrix. Simple extensions further permit to reveal entanglement within specific partitions of a multipartite system. Applications with nonlinear observables allow for the detection of non-Gaussian entanglement.
We investigate how entanglement can be transferred between continuous variable and qubit systems. We find that a two-mode squeezed vacuum state and a continuous variable Werner state can be converted to the product states of infinitive number of two-qubit states while keeping the entanglement. The reverse process is also possible.
We propose the definition of the geometric measure of entanglement for continuous variable states. On the basis of this definition we examine entanglement of the graph states obtained as a result of action of a unitary operator on the ground state of a system of $N$ noninteracting harmonic oscillators. We find that the entanglement of a harmonic oscillator with other ones is defined by the value of its vertex degree.
We provide a method to construct entanglement criteria for arbitrary multipartite systems of discrete or continuous variables and hybrid combinations of both. While any set of local operators generates a sufficient condition for entanglement of arbitrary quantum states, a suitable set leads to a necessary and sufficient criterion for pure states. The criteria are readily implementable with existing technology and reveal entanglement that remains undetected by the respective state-of-the-art methods for discrete and continuous variables.
We present several entanglement conditions in order to detect bound entangled states in continuous variable systems. Specifically, Werner and Wolf [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 3658 (2001)] and Horodecki and Lewenstein [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 2657 (2000)] have proposed examples of bound entangled Gaussian state and bound entangled non-Gaussian state, respectively, of which entanglement can be detected by using our entanglement conditions.
The cavity-optomechanical radiation pressure interaction provides the means to create entanglement between a mechanical oscillator and an electromagnetic field interacting with it. Here we show how we can utilize this entanglement within the framework of time-continuous quantum control, in order to engineer the quantum state of the mechanical system. Specifically, we analyze how to prepare a low-entropy mechanical state by (measurement-based) feedback cooling operated in the blue detuned regime, the creation of bipartite mechanical entanglement via time-continuous entanglement swapping, and pr…
We investigate the entanglement properties of multi-mode Gaussian states, which have some symmetry with respect to the ordering of the modes. We show how the symmetry constraints the entanglement between two modes of the system. In particular, we determine the maximal entanglement of formation that can be achieved in symmetric graphs like chains, 2d and 3d lattices, mean field models and the platonic solids. The maximal entanglement is always attained for the ground state of a particular quadratic Hamiltonian. The latter thus yields the maximal entanglement among all quadratic Hamiltonians hav…
