We show that the fidelity decay between an initial eigenstate state evolved under a unitary chaotic operator and the same eigenstate evolved under a perturbed operator saturates well before the 1/N limit, where $N$ is the size of the Hilbert space, expected for a generic initial state. We provide a theoretical argument and numerical evidence that, for intermediate perturbation strengths, the saturation level depends quadratically on the perturbation strength.
The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) insists that for nonintegrable systems each energy eigenstate accurately gives microcanonical expectation values for a class of observables. As a mechanism for ETH to hold, we show that the energy eigenstates are superposition of uncountably many quasi eigenstates of operationally defined "time operator", which are thermal for thermodynamic isolated quantum many-body systems and approximately orthogonal in terms of extremely short relaxation time of the fidelity. In this way, our scenario provides a theoretical explanation of ETH.
Eigenvalues are defined for any element of an algebra of observables and do not require a representation in terms of wave functions or density matrices. A systematic algebraic derivation based on moments is presented here for the harmonic oscillator, together with a perturbative treatment of anharmonic systems. In this process, a collection of inequalities is uncovered which amount to uncertainty relations for higher-order moments saturated by the harmonic-oscillator excited states. Similar saturation properties hold for anharmonic systems order by order in perturbation theory. The new method,…
Bridging the second law of thermodynamics and microscopic reversible dynamics has been a longstanding problem in statistical physics. We here address this problem on the basis of quantum many-body physics, and discuss how the entropy production saturates in isolated quantum systems under unitary dynamics. First, we rigorously prove the saturation of the entropy production in the long time regime, where a total system can be in a pure state. Second, we discuss the non-negativity of the entropy production at saturation, implying the second law of thermodynamics. This is based on the eigenstate t…
We propose a new quantity called modulus fidelity to measure the closeness of two quantum pure states. Especially, we use it to investigate the closeness of eigenstates of quantum many-body systems. When the system is integrable, the modulus fidelity of neighbor eigenstates displays a large fluctuation. But the modulus fidelity is close to a constant when system becomes non-integrable with fluctuation reduced drastically. Average modulus fidelity of neighbor eigenstates increases with the increase of parameters that destroy the integrability, which also indicates the integrable-chaos transitio…
We show that the quantum fidelity is accessible to cold atom experiments for a large class of evolutions in periodical potentials, properly taking into account the experimental initial conditions of the atomic ensemble. We prove analytically that, at the fundamental quantum resonances of the atom-optics kicked rotor, the fidelity saturates at a constant, time-independent value after a small number of kicks. The latter saturation arises from the bulk of the atomic ensemble, whilst for the resonantly accelerated atoms the fidelity is predicted to decay slowly according to a power law.
We characterize excited state quantum phase transitions in the two dimensional limit of the vibron model with the quantum fidelity susceptibility, comparing the obtained results with the information provided by the participation ratio. As an application, we perform fits using a four-body algebraic Hamiltonian to bending vibrational data for several molecular species and, using the optimized eigenvalues and eigenstates, we locate the eigenstate closest to the barrier to linearity and determine the linear or bent character of the different overtones.
In modern circuit QED architectures, superconducting transmon qubits are measured via the state-dependent phase and amplitude shift of a microwave field leaking from a coupled resonator. Determining this shift requires integrating the field quadratures for a nonzero duration, which can permit unwanted concurrent evolution. Here we investigate such dynamical degradation of the measurement fidelity caused by a detuned neighboring qubit. We find that in realistic parameter regimes, where the qubit ensemble-dephasing rate is slower than the qubit-qubit detuning, the joint qubit-qubit eigenstates a…
The fidelity, defined as overlap of eigenstates of two slightly different Hamiltonians, is proposed as an efficient detector of avoided c rossings in the energy spectrum. This new application of fidelity is motivated for model systems, and its value for analyzing complex qua ntum spectra is underlined by applying it to a random matrix model and a tilted Bose-Hubbard system.
We find an exact expression for the bipartite fidelity f=|<vac|vac>'|^2, where |vac> is the vacuum eigenstate of an infinite-size antiferromagnetic XXZ chain and |vac>' is the vacuum eigenstate of an infinite-size XXZ chain which is split in two. We consider the quantity -ln(f) which has been put forward as a measure of quantum entanglement, and show that the large correlation length xi behaviour is consistent with a general conjecture -ln(f) ~ c/8 ln(xi), where c is the central charge of the UV conformal field theory (with c=1 for the XXZ chain). This behaviour is a natural extension of the e…
We propose quantum control protocols for the high-fidelity preparation of target states in systems with Autler-Townes splitting. We investigate an approximated three-level system obtained from a four-level one by adiabatically eliminating a state that does not participate in the evolution. In our work we use linear, arctan, and Roland-Cerf functions for transferring population between two eigenstates of the system obtaining a high fidelity for long evolution times. Additionally, in order to overcome the restriction given by the lifetimes of the experimental setup, we propose an accelerated adi…
Out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) have become established as a tool to characterise quantum information dynamics and thermalisation in interacting quantum many-body systems. It was recently argued that the expected exponential growth of the OTOC is connected to the existence of correlations beyond those encoded in the standard Eigenstate Thermalisation Hypothesis (ETH). We show explicitly, by an extensive numerical analysis of the statistics of operator matrix elements in conjunction with a detailed study of OTOC dynamics, that the OTOC is indeed a precise tool to explore the fine details …
The fidelity susceptibility measures sensitivity of eigenstates to a change of an external parameter. It has been fruitfully used to pin down quantum phase transitions when applied to ground states (with extensions to thermal states). Here we propose to use the fidelity susceptibility as a useful dimensionless measure for complex quantum systems. We find analytically the fidelity susceptibility distributions for Gaussian orthogonal and unitary universality classes for arbitrary system size. The results are verified by a comparison with numerical data.
We study isolated finite interacting quantum systems after an instantaneous perturbation and show three scenarios in which the probability for finding the initial state later in time (fidelity) decays nonexponentially, often all the way to saturation. The decays analyzed involve Gaussian, Bessel of the first kind, and cosine squared functions. The Gaussian behavior emerges in systems with two-body interactions in the limit of strong perturbation. The Bessel function, associated with the evolution under full random matrices, is obtained with surprisingly sparse random matrices. The cosine squar…
Quantum scars are non-thermal eigenstates characterized by low entanglement entropy, initially detected in systems subject to nearest-neighbor Rydberg blockade, the so called PXP model. While most of these special eigenstates elude an analytical description and seem to hybridize with nearby thermal eigenstates for large systems, some of them can be written as matrix product states (MPS) with size-independent bond dimension. We study the response of these exact quantum scars to perturbations by analysing the scaling of the fidelity susceptibility with system size. We find that some of them are …
We study the crossover of the quantum Loschmidt echo (or fidelity) from the golden rule regime to the perturbation-independent exponential decay regime by using the kicked top model. It is shown that the deviation of the perturbation-independent decay of the averaged fidelity from the Lyapunov decay results from quantum fluctuations in individual fidelity, which are caused by the coherence in the initial coherent states. With an averaging procedure suppressing the quantum fluctuations effectively, the perturbation-independent decay is found to be close to the Lyapunov decay. We also show that …
We analyze the effect of spin degree of freedom on fidelity decay and entropy production of a many-particle fermionic(bosonic) system in a mean-field, quenched by a random two-body interaction preserving many-particle spin $S$. The system Hamiltonian is represented by embedded Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (EGOE) of random matrices (for time-reversal and rotationally invariant systems) with one plus two-body interactions preserving $S$ for fermions/bosons. EGOE are paradigmatic models to study the dynamical transition from integrability to chaos in interacting many-body quantum systems. A simpl…
We study isolated quantum systems with two-body interactions after a quench. In these systems, the energy shell is a Gaussian of width $σ$, and it gives the maximum possible spreading of the energy distribution of the initial states. When the distribution achieves this shape, the fidelity decay can be Gaussian until saturation. This establishes a lower bound for the fidelity decay in realistic systems. An ultimate bound for systems with many-body interactions is also derived based on the analysis of full random matrices. We find excellent agreement between numerical and analytical results. We …
