Dynamical tunneling has been observed in atom optics experiments by two groups. We show that the experimental results are extremely well described by time-periodic Hamiltonians with momentum quantized in units of the atomic recoil. The observed tunneling has a well defined period when only two Floquet states dominate the dynamics. Beat frequencies are observed when three Floquet states dominate. We find frequencies which match those observed in both experiments. The dynamical origin of the dominant Floquet states is identified.
We study a system of three coherently coupled states, where one state is shifted periodically against the other two. We discover such a system possesses a dark Floquet state at zero quasienergy and always with negligible population at the intermediate state. This dark Floquet state manifests itself dynamically in terms of the suppression of inter-state tunneling, a phenomenon known as coherent destruction of tunneling. We suggest to call it dark coherent destruction of tunneling (DCDT). At high frequency limit for the periodic driving, this Floquet state reduces to the well-known dark state wi…
We show that the probability distribution of the stationary state of a dissipative ac-driven two-level system exhibits discontinuities, i.e. jumps, for parameters at which coherent destruction of tunneling takes place. These discontinuities can be observed as jumps in the emission of the Mollow triplet. The jumps are the consequence of discontinuities in the transition rates, which we calculate numerically and analytically based on the secular Floquet-Redfield formalism.
We theoretically report an analog of photon-assisted tunneling (PAT) in a periodically driven lattice array without a static biased potential by studying a three-channel waveguide system. This analog of PAT can be achieved by only periodically modulating the top waveguide and adjusting the distance between the bottom and its adjacent waveguide. It is numerically shown that the PAT resonances also exist in the five-channel waveguide system and probably exist in the waveguide arrays with other odd numbers of waveguides, but they will become weak as the number of waveguides increases. With origin…
We study electric dipole spin resonance caused by sub-terahertz (THz) radiation in a multilevel finite-size quantum dot formed in a nanowire focusing on the range of driving electric fields amplitudes where a strong interplay between the Rabi spin oscillations and tunneling from the dot to continuum states can occur. A strong effect of the tunneling on the spin evolution in this regime occurs due to formation of mixed spin states. As a result, the tunneling strongly limits possible spin manipulations time. We demonstrate a backaction of the spin dynamics on the tunneling and position of the el…
We study the dissipative dynamics of a two-level system (TLS) exposed to strong ac driving. By combing Floquet theory with Van Vleck perturbation theory in the TLS tunneling matrix element, we diagonalize the time-dependent Hamiltonian and provide corrections to the renormalized Rabi frequency of the TLS, which are valid for both a biased and unbiased TLS and go beyond the known high-frequency and rotating-wave results. In order to mimic environmental influences on the TLS, we couple the system weakly to a thermal bath and solve analytically the corresponding Floquet-Bloch-Redfield master equa…
We study the tunneling dynamics in a time-periodically modulated two-mode Bose-Hubbard model using Floquet theory. We consider situations where the system is in the self-trapping regime and either the tunneling amplitude, the interaction strength, or the energy difference between the modes is modulated. In the former two cases, the tunneling is enhanced in a wide range of modulation frequencies, while in the latter case the resonance is narrow. We explain this difference with the help of Floquet analysis. If the modulation amplitude is weak, the locations of the resonances can be found using t…
We study quasi-bound states and scattering with short range potentials in three dimensions, subject to an axial periodic driving. We find that poles of the scattering S-matrix can cross the real energy axis as a function of the drive amplitude, making the S-matrix nonanalytic at a singular point. For the corresponding quasi-bound states that can tunnel out of (or get captured within) a potential well, this results in a discontinuous jump in both the angular momentum and energy of emitted (absorbed) waves. We also analyze elastic and inelastic scattering of slow particles in the time dependent …
The field of quantum simulation, which aims at using a tunable quantum system to simulate another, has been developing fast in the past years as an alternative to the all-purpose quantum computer. In particular, the use of temporal driving has attracted a huge interest recently as it was shown that certain fast drivings can create new topological effects, while a strong driving leads to e.g. Anderson localization physics. In this work, we focus on the intermediate regime to observe a quantum chaos transport mechanism called chaos-assisted tunneling which provides new possibilities of control f…
We investigate interplay between external field and interatomic interaction and its applications to coherent control of quantum tunneling for two repulsive bosons confined in a high-frequency driven double well. A full solution of the system is generated analytically as a coherent non-Floquet state by using the Floquet states as a set of complete bases. It is demonstrated that the photon resonance of interaction leads to translation of the Floquet level-crossing points, and the non-resonant interaction causes avoided crossing of partial levels. In the non-Floquet states, the bosons beyond the …
In this study, we have studied the quantum tunneling of a single spin-orbit-coupled atom held in a periodically modulated optical lattice with an impurity. At the pseudocollapse points of quasienergy bands, where the dynamical localization takes place globally, two types of local second-order tunneling processes appear beyond expectation between the two nearest-neighbor sites of the impurity with the spin unchanged and with impurity site population negligible all the time, when the impurity potential is far off-resonant with the driving field. Though tunneling behaviors of the two types seem t…
Floquet engineering offers a compelling approach for designing the time evolution of periodically driven systems. We implement a periodic atom-light coupling to realize Floquet atom optics on the strontium ${}^1\!S_0\,\text{-}\, {}^3\!P_1$ transition. These atom optics reach pulse efficiencies above $99.4\%$ over a wide range of frequency offsets between light and atomic resonance, even under strong driving where this detuning is on the order of the Rabi frequency. Moreover, we use Floquet atom optics to compensate for differential Doppler shifts in large momentum transfer atom interferometers…
The periodically modulated Bose-Hubbard dimer model offers an experimentally realizable and highly tunable platform for observing the scrambling of quantum information and the apparent thermalisation of isolated, interacting quantum many-body systems. In this work we apply fidelity out-of-time-order correlators to establish connections between thermalisation in Floquet system, the exponential growth of FOTOCs as quantified by a non-zero quantum Lyapunov exponent, and the underlying classical transition from regular to chaotic dynamics in the dimer. Moreover, we demonstrate that a non-zero quan…

Photo-induced transition probabilities in graphene are studied theoretically from the viewpoint of Floquet theory. Conduction band populations are computed for a strongly, periodically driven graphene sheet under linear, circular, and elliptic polarization. Features of the momentum spectrum of excited quasi-particles can be directly related to the avoided crossing of the Floquet quasi-energy levels. In particular, the impact of the ellipticity and the strength of the laser excitation on the avoided crossing structure -- and on the resulting transition probabilities -- is studied. It is shown t…
The insertion of a local magnetic flux, as the one created by a thin solenoid, plays an important role in gedanken experiments of quantum Hall physics. By combining Floquet engineering of artificial magnetic fields with the ability of single-site addressing in quantum-gas microscopes, we propose a scheme for the realization of such local solenoid-type magnetic fields in optical lattices. We show that it can be employed to manipulate and probe elementary excitations of a topological Chern insulator. This includes quantized adiabatic charge pumping along tailored paths inside the bulk, as well a…
Floquet engineering or coherent time periodic driving of quantum systems has been successfully used to synthesize Hamiltonians with novel properties. In ultracold atomic systems, this has led to experimental realizations of artificial gauge fields, topological band structures, and observation of dynamical localization, to name just a few. Here we present a Floquet-based framework to stroboscopically engineer Hamiltonians with spatial features and periodicity below the diffraction limit of light used to create them by time-averaging over various configurations of a 1D optical Kronig-Penney (KP)…
We investigate quantum tunneling of two repulsive bosons in a triple-well potential subject to a high-frequency driving field. By means of the multiple-time-scale asymptotic analysis, we evidence a far-resonant strongly-interacting regime in which the selected coherent destruction of tunneling can occur between the paired states and unpaired states, and the dominant tunneling of the paired states is a second order process. Two Floquet quasienergy bands of the both kinds of states are given analytically, where a fine structure up to the second order corrections is displayed. The analytical resu…
We investigate the nonlinear response of an anharmonic monostable quantum mechanical resonator to strong external periodic driving. The driving thereby induces an effective bistability in which resonant tunneling can be identified. Within the framework of a Floquet analysis, an effective Floquet-Born-Markovian master equation with time-independent coefficients can be established which can be solved straightforwardly. Various effects including resonant tunneling and multi-photon transitions will be described. Our model finds applications in nano-electromechanical devices such as vibrating suspe…
We present a spectral analysis of Rydberg atoms in strong microwave fields using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) as an all-optical readout. The measured spectroscopic response enables optical, atom-based electric field measurements of high-power microwaves. In our experiments, microwaves are irradiated into a room-temperature rubidium vapor cell. The microwaves are tuned near the two-photon 65D-66D Rydberg transition and reach an electric field strength of 230V/m, about 20% of the microwave ionization threshold of these atoms. A Floquet treatment is used to model the Rydberg lev…
Quantum interference effects in the unmodulated quantum systems with light-matter interaction have been widely studied, such as electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and Autler-Townes splitting (ATS). However, the similar quantum interference effects in the Floquet systems (i.e., periodically modulated systems), which might cover rich new physics, were rarely studied. In this article, we investigate the quantum interference effects in the Floquet two- and three-level systems analytically and numerically. We show a coherent destruction tunneling effect in a lotuslike multipeak spectrum…
We describe an experimental setup for imaging topologically protected Floquet edge states using ultracold bosons in an optical lattice. Our setup involves a deep two dimensional optical lattice with a time dependent superlattice that modulates the hopping between neighboring sites. The finite waist of the superlattice beam yields regions with different topological numbers. One can observe chiral edge states by imaging the real-space density of a bosonic packet launched from the boundary between two topologically distinct regions.
Quantum metrology with ultra-high precision usually requires atoms prepared in an ultra-stable environment with well-defined quantum states. Thus, in optical lattice clock systems deep lattice potentials are used to trap ultra-cold atoms. However, decoherence, induced by Raman scattering and higher order light shifts, can significantly be reduced if atomic clocks are realized in shallow optical lattices. On the other hand, in such lattices, tunneling among different sites can cause additional dephasing and strongly broadening of the Rabi spectrum. Here, in our experiment, we periodically drive…
We propose the implementation of a quantum heat pump with ultracold atoms. It is based on two periodically driven coherently coupled quantum dots using ultracold atoms. Each dot possesses two relevant quantum states and is coupled to a fermionic reservoir. The working principle is based on energy-selective driving-induced resonant tunneling processes, where a particle that tunnels from one dot to the other either absorbs or emits the energy quantum $\hbarω$ associated with the driving frequency, depending on its energy. We characterize the device using Floquet theory and compare simple analyti…
An optical realization of the tunneling dynamics of two interacting bosons in a double-well potential, based on light transport in a four-core microstructured fiber, is proposed. The optical setting enables to visualize in a purely classical system the entire crossover from Rabi oscillations to correlated pair tunneling and to tunneling of a fragmented pair in the fermionization limit.
