Observation of sub-Fourier resonances in a quantum-chaotic system

We experimentally show that the response of a quantum-chaotic system can display resonance lines sharper than the inverse of the excitation duration. This allows us to discriminate two neighboring frequencies with a resolution nearly 40 times better than the limit set by the Fourier inequality. Furthermore, numerical studies indicate that there is no limit, but the loss of signal, to this resolution, opening ways for the development of sub-Fourier quantum-chaotic signal processing.

Fourier's Law for Quasi One--Dimensional Chaotic Quantum Systems

We derive Fourier's law for a completely coherent quasi one--dimensional chaotic quantum system coupled locally to two heat baths at different temperatures. We solve the master equation to first order in the temperature difference. We show that the heat conductance can be expressed as a thermodynamic equilibrium coefficient taken at some intermediate temperature. Chaotic Quantum Decay in Driven Biased Optical Lattices

Quantum decay in an ac driven biased periodic potential modeling cold atoms in optical lattices is studied for a symmetry broken driving. For the case of fully chaotic classical dynamics the classical exponential decay is quantum mechanically suppressed for a driving frequency ωin resonance with the Bloch frequency ω_B, qω=rω_B with integers q and r. Mechanism and Lineshapes of Sub-Fourier Resonances

Subtle internal interference effects allow quantum-chaotic systems to display "sub-Fourier" resonances, i.e. to distinguish two neighboring driving frequencies in a time shorter than the inverse of the difference of the two frequencies. We report experiments on the atomic version of the kicked rotor showing the unusual properties of the sub-Fourier resonances, and develop a theoretical approach (based on the Floquet theorem) explaining these properties, and correctly predicting the widths and lineshapes.

Kraus decomposition for chaotic environments including time-dependent subsystem Hamiltonians

We derive an exact and explicit Kraus decomposition for the reduced density of a quantum system simultaneously interacting with time-dependent external fields and a chaotic environment of thermodynamic dimension. We test the accuracy of the Kraus decomposition against exact numerical results for a CNOT gate performed on two qubits of an $(N+2)$-qubit statically flawed isolated quantum computer. Here the $N$ idle qubits comprise the finite environment. We obtain very good agreement even for small $N$.

Stabilization of Deterministically Chaotic Systems by Interference and Quantum Measurements: The Ikeda Map Case

We propose a method which can effectively stabilize fixed points in the classical and quantum dynamics of a phase-sensitive chaotic system with feedback. It is based on feeding back a selected quantum sub-ensemble whose phase and amplitude stabilize the otherwise chaotic dynamics. Although the method is rather general, we apply it to realizations of the inherently chaotic Ikeda map. One suggested realization involves the Mach-Zender interferometer with Kerr nonlinearity. Another realization involves a trapped ion interacting with laser fields.

Direct observation of photon bunching in thermal light in quantum Fourier transform spectroscopy

Entanglement production in chaotic quantum dots subject to spin-orbit coupling

We study numerically the production of orbital and spin entangled states in chaotic quantum dots for non-interacting electrons. The introduction of spin-orbit coupling permit us to identify signatures of time-reversal symmetry correlations in the entanglement production previously unnoticed, resembling weak-(anti)localization quantum corrections to the conductance. We find the entanglement to be strongly dependent on spin-orbit coupling, showing universal features for broken time-reversal and spin-rotation symmetries.

Entangling power of quantized chaotic systems

We study the quantum entanglement caused by unitary operators that have classical limits that can range from the near integrable to the completely chaotic. Entanglement in the eigenstates and time-evolving arbitrary states is studied through the von Neumann entropy of the reduced density matrices. We demonstrate that classical chaos can lead to substantially enhanced entanglement. Entanglement production by interaction quenches of quantum chaotic subsystems

The entanglement production in bipartite quantum systems is studied for initially unentangled product eigenstates of the subsystems, which are assumed to be quantum chaotic. Based on a perturbative computation of the Schmidt eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix, explicit expressions for the time-dependence of entanglement entropies, including the von Neumann entropy, are given. Correlations of observables in chaotic states of macroscopic quantum systems

We study correlations of observables in energy eigenstates of chaotic systems of a large size $N$. We show that the bipartite entanglement of two subsystems is quite strong, whereas macroscopic entanglement of the total system is absent. It is also found that correlations, either quantum or classical, among less than $N/2$ points are quite small. These results imply that chaotic states are stable. Invariance of these properties under local operations is also shown.

Quantum chaotic system as a model of decohering environment

As a model of decohering environment, we show that quantum chaotic system behave equivalently as many-body system. An approximate formula for the time evolution of the reduced density matrix of a system interacting with a quantum chaotic environment is derived.
