We derive analytic solution for pulsed frequency conversion based on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) or maximum coherence in resonant atomic vapors. In particular drive-field and coherence depletion are taken into account. The solutions are obtained with the help of an Hamiltonian approach which in the adiabatic limit allows to reduce the full set of Maxwell-Bloch equations to simple canonical equations of Hamiltonian mechanics for the field variables. Adiabatic integrals of motion can be obtained and general expressions for the spatio-temporal evolution of field intensities derived. Optimum conditions for maximum conversion efficiency are identified and the physical mechanism of nonlinear conversion in the limit of drive-field and coherence depletion discussed.
We have experimentally observed switching between photon-photon correlations (bunching) and anti-correlations (anti-bunching) between two orthogonally polarized laser beams in an EIT configuration in Rb vapor. The bunching and anti-bunching sswitching occurs at a specific magnetic field strength.
We report on the simultaneous observation, by delayed Bragg diffraction, of four- and six-wave mixing processes in a coherently prepared atomic ensemble consisting of cold cesium atoms. For each diffracted order, we observe different temporal pulse shapes and dependencies with the intensities of the exciting fields, evidencing the different mechanisms involved in each process. The various observations are well described by a simplified analytical theory, which considers the atomic system as an ensemble of three-level atoms in Λ configuration.
We describe parametric down conversion process in a two-level atomic gas, where the atoms are in a superposition state of relevant energy levels. This superposition results in splitting of the phase matching condition into three different conditions. Another, more important, peculiarity of the system under discussion is the nonsaturability of amplification coefficients with increasing pump wave intensity, under "sideband" generation conditions.
Steep dispersion of opposite signs in driven degenerate two-level atomic transitions have been predicted and observed on the D2 line of 87Rb in an optically thin vapor cell. The intensity dependence of the anomalous dispersion has been studied. The maximum observed value of anomalous dispersion [dn/dnu ~= -6x10^{-11}Hz^{-1}] corresponds to anegative group velocity V_g ~= -c/23000.
Interest in lossless nonlinearities has focussed on the the dispersive properties of $Λ$ systems under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We generalize the lambda system by introducing further degenerate states to realize a `Chain $ Λ$' atom where multiple coupling of the probe field significantly enhances the intensity dependent dispersion without compromising the EIT condition.
A detailed derivation of the master equation of the cavity radiation of a coherently prepared $Y$-shaped four-level correlated emission laser is presented. The outline of the procedures that can be employed in analytically solving the stochastic differential equations and the rate equations of various correlations are also provided. It is shown that coherently preparing the atoms in the upper two energy levels and the lower, initially, can lead to a genuine continuous variable tripartite entanglement. Moreover, preparing the atoms in the coherent superposition, other than the possible maximum …
Motivated by the recent experiment [V.A. Sautenkov, Yu.V. Rostovtsev, and M.O. Scully, Phys. Rev. A 72, 065801 (2005)], we develop a theoretical model in which the field intensity fluctuations resulted from resonant interaction of a dense atomic medium with laser field having finite bandwidth. The intensity-intensity cross correlation between two circular polarized beams can be controlled by the applied external magnetic field. A smooth transition from perfect correlations to anti-correlations (at zero delay time) of the outgoing beams as a function of the magnetic field strength is observed. …
We experimentally study the group time delay for a light pulse propagating through hot Rb vapor in the presence of a strong coupling field in a $Λ$ configuration. We demonstrate that the ultra-slow pulse propagation is transformed into superluminal propagation as the one-photon detuning of the light increases due to the change in the transmission resonance lineshape. Negative group velocity as low as -c/10^6=-80 m/s is recorded. We also find that the advance time in the regime of the superluminal propagation grows linearly with increasing laser field power.
Light induced absorption with population inversion and amplification without population inversion (LWI) in a coherently prepared closed three level V - type system are investigated. This study is performed from the point of view of a two color dressed state basis. Both of these processes are possible due to atomic coherence and quantum interference contrary to simple intuitive predictions. Merely on physical basis, one would expect a complementary process to the amplification without inversion. We believe that absorption in the presence of population inversion found in the dressed state pictur…
We consider transfer of optical vortices between laser pulses carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) in a cloud of cold atoms characterized by the $Λ$ configuration of the atom-light coupling. The atoms are initially prepared in a coherent superposition of the lower levels, creating a so-called phaseonium medium. If a single vortex beam initially acts on one transition of the $Λ$ scheme, an extra laser beam is subsequently generated with the same vorticity as that of the incident vortex beam. The absorption of the incident probe beam takes place mostly at the beginning of the atomic medium wi…
We report a detailed investigation on the generation of pulse pairs during the readout of a coherence grating stored in a cold atomic ensemble. The pulse shapes and the split of the retrieved energy between the two pulses are studied as a function of the relative intensities of the two reading fields, and a minimum is observed for the total retrieved energy. We introduce a simplified analytical theory for the process, considering a three-level atomic system, which explains all the most striking experimental features.
We propose a method to study the quantum nonlinearity and observe the multiphoton transitions in a multiatom CQED system. We show that by inducing simultaneously destructive quantum interference for the single-photon and two-photon excitations in the CQED system, it is possible to observe the direct three-photon excitation of the higher-order ladder states of the CQED system. We report an experiment with cold Rb atoms confined in an optical cavity and demonstrate such interference control of the multi-photon excitations of the CQED system. The observed nonlinear excitation of the CQED ladder s…
Two light pulses propagating with ultra-slow group velocities in a coherently prepared atomic gas exhibit dissipation-free nonlinear coupling of an unprecedented strength. This enables a single-photon pulse to coherently control or manipulate the quantum state of the other. Processes of this kind result in generation of entangled states of radiation field and open up new prospectives for quantum information processing.
The output fields of a pair of coherently coupled nonlinear optical cavities are found to exhibit strong optical entanglement. For sufficiently strong coupling the quantum correlations become asynchronous providing a resource for quantum information protocols such as all-optical quantum memories. A straightforward experimental implementation applicable to whispering gallery mode resonators such as microtoroids is proposed.
We report the observation of small group velocities of order 90 meters per second, and large group delays of greater than 0.26 ms, in an optically dense hot rubidium gas (~360 K). Media of this kind yield strong nonlinear interactions between very weak optical fields, and very sharp spectral features. The result is in agreement with previous studies on nonlinear spectroscopy of dense coherent media.
Optical lattice loaded with cold atoms can exhibit a tunable photonic band gap for a weak probe field under the conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency. This system possesses a number of advantageous properties, including reduced relaxation of Raman coherence and the associated probe absorption, and simultaneous enhancement of the index modulation and the resulting reflectivity of the medium. This flexible system has a potential to serve as a testbed of various designs for the linear and nonlinear photonic band gap materials at a very low light level and can be employed for real…
We propose a general framework to effectively `open' a high-Q resonator, that is, to release the quantum state initially prepared in it in the form of a traveling electromagnetic wave. This is achieved by employing a mediating mode that scatters coherently the radiation from the resonator into a one-dimensional continuum of modes such as a waveguide. The same mechanism may be used to `feed' a desired quantum field to an initially empty cavity. Switching between an `open' and `closed' resonator may then be obtained by controlling either the detuning of the scatterer or the amount of time it spe…
Quantum entanglement generation is generally known to be impossible by any classical means. According to Poisson statistics, coherent photons are not considered quantum particles due to the bunching phenomenon. Recently, a coherence approach has been applied to interpret quantum features such as the Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) effect, Franson-type nonlocal correlation, and delayed-choice quantum eraser, where the quantum feature is due to basis-product superposition at the cost of 50 % photon loss. For this, it has been understood that a fixed sum-phase relation between paired photons is the bedrock …
We study the interaction of a weak probe field, having two orthogonally polarized components, with an optically dense medium of four-level atoms in a tripod configuration. In the presence of a coherent driving laser, electromagnetically induced transparency is attained in the medium, dramatically enhancing its linear as well as nonlinear dispersion while simultaneously suppressing the probe field absorption. We present the semiclassical and fully quantum analysis of the system. We propose an experimentally feasible setup that can induce large Faraday rotation of the probe field polarization an…
We investigate the effect of the cumulative phase on the photon statistics of the three-mode state whose evolution is described by the trilinear Hamiltonian $\hat{H}_{I}=i\hbarκ\big(\hat{a}\hat{b}\hat{c}^{\dagger}-\hat{a}^{\dagger}\hat{b}^{\dagger}c\big)$, wherein the pump is taken to be quantized (and prepared in a coherent state) and the signal and idler modes are initially seeded with coherent states. We provide a brief review of the two-mode squeezed coherent states generated by non-degenerate coherently-stimulated parametric down-conversion, whereby the nonlinear crystal is driven by a st…
Large optical nonlinearities occurring in a coherently prepared atomic system are shown to produce phase shifts of order $π$. Such an effect may be observed in ultracold rubidium atoms where it could be feasibly exploited toward the realization of a polarization phase gate.
Over the last several decades, entangled photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric down conversion processes in both second-order and third-order nonlinear optical materials have been intensively studied for various quantum features such as Bell inequality violation and anticorrelation. In an interferometric scheme, anticorrelation results from photon bunching based on randomness when entangled photon pairs coincidently impinge on a beam splitter. Compared with post-measurement-based probabilistic confirmation, a coherence version has been recently proposed using the wave nature of phot…
We present a general analysis for the interaction of a probe laser radiation with a coherently prepared molecular Raman medium. We describe a general formalism which includes dispersive effects, such as group velocity and group velocity dispersion (GVD). When dispersion is negligible, the analysis is especially simple and insightful. We show that molecular oscillations result in a modulated instantaneous susceptibility of the medium. The effect of the time-varying susceptibility on a probe laser pulse is two-fold: the output frequency becomes modulated because of the time-varying phase velocit…
We explore theoretically the optical response properties in an optomechanical system under electromagneti- cally induced transparency condition but with the mechanical resonator being driven by an additional coherent field. In this configuration, more complex quantum coherent and interference phenomena occur. In partic- ular, we find that the probe transmission spectra depend on the total phase of the applied fields. Our study also provides an efficient way to control propagation of amplification.
New phenomenon of temporal oscillations of nonlinear Faraday rotation in a driven four-level system is predicted. We show that in this system with one upper level, under the conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency created by a strong coupling field, the polarization rotation of weak probe light exhibits slowly damped oscillations with a frequency proportional to the strength of an applied magnetic field. This opens up an alternate way to sensitive magnetometric measurements. Applications in low-light nonlinear optics such as photon entanglement are feasible.
The efficiency of an ensemble-based optical quantum memory depends critically on the strength of the atom-light coupling. An optical cavity is an effective method to enhance atom-light coupling strength, with the drawback that cavities can be difficult to integrate into a memory setup. In this work we show coherent enhancement of atom-light coupling via an interference effect. The light to be absorbed into the atomic ensemble is split and used to drive the atoms from opposite ends of the ensemble. We compare this method theoretically to a cavity enhanced scheme and present experimental results…
Chip-based cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) devices consisting of a self-assembled InAs quantum dot (QD) coupled to a high quality factor GaAs microdisk cavity are coherently probed through their optical channel using a fiber taper waveguide. We highlight one particularly important aspect of this all-fiber measurement setup, which is the accuracy to which the optical coupling level and optical losses are known relative to typical free-space excitation techniques. This allows for precise knowledge of the intracavity photon number and measurement of absolute transmitted and reflected signals…
Quantum coherence in quantum optics is an essential part of optical information processing and light manipulation. Alkali metal vapors, despite the numerous shortcomings, are traditionally used in quantum optics as a working medium due to convenient near-infrared excitation, strong dipole transitions and long-lived coherence. Here, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated photon retention and subsequent re-emittance with the quantum coherence in a system of coherently excited molecular nitrogen ions (N2+) which are produced using a strong 800 nm femtosecond laser pulse. Such photon retentio…
We investigate the multiphoton quantum dynamics of a leaking single-mode quantized cavity field coupled with a resonantly driven two-level system possessing permanent dipoles. The frequencies of the interacting subsystems are being considered very different, e.g., microwave ranges for the cavity and optical domains for the frequency of the two-level emitter, respectively. In this way, the emitter couples to the resonator mode via its diagonal dipole moments only. Furthermore, the generalized Rabi frequency resulting form the external coherent driving of the two-level subsystem is assumed as we…
In the previous paper [M. Tsang, Phys. Rev. A 81, 063837 (2010), e-print arXiv:1003.0116], I proposed a quantum model of a cavity electro-optic modulator, which can coherently couple an optical cavity mode to a microwave resonator mode and enable novel quantum operations on the two modes, including laser cooling of the microwave mode, electro-optic entanglement, and backaction-evading optical measurement of a microwave quadrature. In this sequel, I focus on the quantum input-output relations between traveling optical and microwave fields coupled to a cavity electro-optic modulator. With red-si…
The future of quantum communication systems and quantum networks heavily rely on the ability to fabricate and coherently control the conversion of photons between different modes based on a solid-state plateform. In this work, we propose and theoretically investigate a scheme to optomechanically control coherent mode conversion of optical photons by utilizing two optically coupled hybrid semiconductor microcavities containing a quantum dot (QD). One of the microcavity is pumped by an external laser and the second cavity is driven by light emitted by the QD that is embedded in the interface sep…
Efficient excitation of a single two-level system usually requires that the driving field is at the same frequency as the atomic transition. However, the scattered laser light in solid-state implementations can dominate over the single photons, imposing an outstanding challenge to perfect single-photon sources. Here, we propose a background-free method using a phase-locked dichromatic electromagnetic field with no spectral overlap with the optical transition for a coherent control of a two-level system, and we demonstrate this method experimentally with a single quantum dot embedded in a micro…
