For a closed bi-partite quantum system partitioned into system proper and environment we interprete the microcanonical and the canonical condition as constraints for the interaction between those two subsystems. In both cases the possible pure-state trajectories are confined to certain regions in Hilbert space. We show that in a properly defined thermodynamical limit almost all states within those accessible regions represent states of some maximum local entropy. For the microcanonical condition this dominant state still depends on the initial state; for the canonical condition it coincides with that defined by Jaynes' principle. It is these states which thermodynamical systems should generically evolve into.
A classical realization of the Jaynes-Cummings (JC) model, describing the interaction of a two-level atom with a quantized cavity mode, is proposed based on light transport in engineered waveguide superlattices. The optical setting enables to visualize in Fock space dynamical regimes not yet accessible in quantum systems, providing new physical insights into the deep strong coupling regime of the JC model. In particular, bouncing of photon number wave packets in Hilbert space and revivals of populations are explained as generalized Bloch oscillations in an inhomogeneous tight-binding lattice.
We consider a quantum system consisting of N parts, each of which is a "quKit" described by a K dimensional Hilbert space. We prove that in the symmetric subspace, S, a pure state is not globally entangled, if and only if it is a coherent state. It is also shown that in the orthogonal complement all states are globally entangled.
We studied full revivals of quantum states in the Jaynes-Cannings model. It is proved that in the case of zero detuning in subspaces generated by two adjacent pairs of energy levels, full revival of the subspace does not exist for any values of the parameters. In the case of non-zero detuning on the contrary, the set of parameters that allows full revival of such subspaces is dense as the subset of all parameters. The nature of these revivals differs from Rabi oscillations in subspaces of a single pair of energy. In more complex subspaces the presence of full revival is reduced to particular c…
Two pure states of a multi-partite system are alway are related by a unitary transformation acting on the Hilbert space of the whole system. This transformation involves multi-partite transformations. On the other hand some quantum information protocols such as the quantum teleportation and quantum dense coding are based on equivalence of some classes of states of bi-partite systems under the action of local (one-particle) unitary operations. In this paper we address the question: ``Under what conditions are the two states states, $\varrho$ and $σ$, of a multi-partite system locally unitary eq…
We analyze the distinguishability norm on the states of a multi-partite system, defined by local measurements. Concretely, we show that the norm associated to a tensor product of sufficiently symmetric measurements is essentially equivalent to a multi-partite generalisation of the non-commutative 2-norm (aka Hilbert-Schmidt norm): in comparing the two, the constants of domination depend only on the number of parties but not on the Hilbert spaces dimensions. We discuss implications of this result on the corresponding norms for the class of all measurements implementable by local operations and …
Entanglement is a powerful resource for processing quantum information. In this context pure, maximally entangled states have received considerable attention. In the case of bipartite qubit-systems the four orthonormal Bell-states are of this type. One of these Bell states, the singlet Bell-state, has the additional property of being antisymmetric with respect to particle exchange. In this contribution we discuss possible generalizations of this antisymmetric Bell-state to cases with more than two particles and with single-particle Hilbert spaces involving more than two dimensions. We review b…
The Liouville equation differs from the von Neumann equation 'only' by a characteristic superoperator. We demonstrate this for Hamiltonian dynamics, in general, and for the Jaynes-Cummings model, in particular. -- Employing superspace (instead of Hilbert space), we describe time evolution of density matrices in terms of path integrals which are formally identical for quantum and classical mechanics. They only differ by the interaction contributing to the action. This allows to import tools developed for Feynman path integrals, in order to deal with superoperators instead of quantum mechanical …
Pati (Physics Letters A, 2000) derived a sufficient condition for the existence of Schmidt decomposition in tripartite Hilbert spaces. In this paper, we show that the condition is erroneous by demonstrating some counter-examples. Moreover, we suitably modify the condition and provide a correctness proof. We also show for the first time how this can be generalized to $n$-partite Hilbert spaces for any $n\geq 2$. Finally, we prove that this condition is also a necessary condition.
The notion of entanglement can be naturally extended from quantum-states to the level of general quantum evolutions. This is achieved by considering multi-partite unitary transformations as elements of a multi-partite Hilbert space and then extended to general quantum operations. We show some connection between this entanglement and the entangling capabilities of the quantum evolution.
The multiphoton Jaynes-Cummings model is investigated and applications in quantum information science are explored. Considering the strong atom-field coupling regime and an $N$-photon interaction, a nonlinear driving field can perform an arbitrary rotation in the Fock space of the cavity mode involving the vacuum and an $M$-Fock state, with $M<N$. Besides, driving the cavity mode with a linear coherent field (superposition of many Fock states), only the cavity states within the Fock subspace {$|0\rangle,|1\rangle,..., |N-1\rangle$} can be populated, i.e., we show how to implement a Fock state …
Symmetries of finite Heisenberg groups represent an important tool for the study of deeper structure of finite-dimensional quantum mechanics. This short contribution presents extension of previous investigations to composite quantum systems comprised of k subsystems which are described with position and momentum variables in Z_{n_i}, i=1,...,k. Their Hilbert spaces are given by k-fold tensor products of Hilbert spaces of dimensions n_1,...,n_k. Symmetry group of the corresponding finite Heisenberg group is given by the quotient group of a certain normalizer. We provide the description of the s…
We discuss the question of entanglement versus separability of pure quantum states in direct product Hilbert spaces and the relevance of this issue to physics. Different types of separability may be possible, depending on the particular factorization or split of the Hilbert space. A given orthonormal basis set for a Hilbert space is defined to be of type (p,q) if p elements of the basis are entangled and q are separable, relative to a given bi-partite factorization of that space. We conjecture that not all basis types exist for a given Hilbert space.
We study the quantum dynamics of a two-level system interacting with a quantized harmonic oscillator in the deep strong coupling regime (DSC) of the Jaynes-Cummings model, that is, when the coupling strength g is comparable or larger than the oscillator frequency w (g/w > 1). In this case, the rotating-wave approximation cannot be applied or treated perturbatively in general. We propose an intuitive and predictive physical frame to describe the DSC regime where photon number wavepackets bounce back and forth along parity chains of the Hilbert space, while producing collapse and revivals of the…
The equivalence problem under local unitary transformation for $n$--partite pure states is reduced to the one for $(n-1)$--partite mixed states. In particular, a tripartite system $\mathcal{H}_A\otimes\mathcal{H}_B\otimes\mathcal{H}_C$, where $\mathcal{H}_j$ is a finite dimensional complex Hilbert space for $j=A,B,C$, is considered and a set of invariants under local transformations is introduced, which is complete for the set of states whose partial trace with respect to $\mathcal{H}_A$ belongs to the class of generic mixed states.
Phase transitions are commonly held to occur only in the thermodynamical limit of large number of system components. Here we exemplify at the hand of the exactly solvable Jaynes-Cummings (JC) model and its generalization to finite JC-lattices that finite component systems of coupled spins and bosons may exhibit quantum phase transitions (QPT). For the JC-model we find a continuous symmetry-breaking QPT, a photonic condensate with a macroscopic occupation as the ground state and a Goldstone mode as a low-energy excitation. For the two site JC-lattice we show analytically that it undergoes a Mot…
Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard (JCH) model is a fundamental many-body model for light-matter interaction. As a leading platform for quantum simulation, the trapped ion system has realized the JCH model for two to three ions. Here we report the quantum simulation of the JCH model using up to 32 ions. We verify the simulation results even for large ion numbers by engineering low excitations and thus low effective dimensions; then we extend to 32 excitations for an effective dimension of $2^{77}$, which is difficult for classical computers. By regarding the phonon modes as baths, we explore Markovian or…
An infinite dimensional system such as a quantum harmonic oscillator offers a potentially unbounded Hilbert space for computation, but accessing and manipulating the entire state space requires a physically unrealistic amount of energy. When such a quantum harmonic oscillator is coupled to a qubit, for example via a Jaynes-Cummings interaction, it is well known that the total Hilbert space can be separated into independently accessible subspaces of constant energy, but the number of subspaces is still infinite. Nevertheless, a closed four-dimensional Hilbert space can be analytically construct…
The design of quantum many body systems, which have to fulfill an extensive number of constraints, appears as a formidable challenge within the field of quantum simulation. Lattice gauge theories are a particular important class of quantum systems with an extensive number of local constraints and play a central role in high energy physics, condensed matter and quantum information. Whereas recent experimental progress points towards the feasibility of large-scale quantum simulation of Abelian gauge theories, the quantum simulation of non-Abelian gauge theories appears still elusive. In this pap…
A general $n$-partite state $| Ψ>$ of a composite quantum system can be regarded as an element in a Hilbert tensor product space $\HH = \otimes_{k=1}^n \HH_k$, where the dimension of $\HH_k$ is $d_k$ for $k = 1,..., n$. Without loss of generality we may assume that $d_1 \le...\le d_n$. A separable (Hartree) $n$-partite state $| ϕ>$ can be described by $| ϕ> = \otimes_{k=1}^n | ϕ^{(k)}>$ with $| ϕ^{(k)}> \in \HH_k$. We show that $σ:= \min \{< Ψ| ϕ_Ψ> : | Ψ> \in \HH,.$ $. < Ψ| Ψ> = 1\}$ is a positive number, where $| ϕ_Ψ>$ is the nearest separable state to $| Ψ>$. We call $σ$ the minimum Hartree…
We find that a class of entanglement measures for bipartite pure state can be expressed by the average values of quantum operators, which are related to any complete basis of one partite operator space. Two specific examples are given based on two different ways to generalize Pauli matrices to $d$ dimensional Hilbert space and the case for identical particle system is also considered. In addition, applying our measure to mixed state case will give a sufficient condition for entanglement.
We present the new exact upper bounds on the maximal Bell violation for the generalized N-qubit GHZ state, the N-qudit GHZ state and, in general, for an arbitrary N-partite quantum state, possibly infinite-dimensional. Our results indicate that, for an N-partite quantum state of any Hilbert space dimension, violation of any Bell-type inequality (either on correlation functions or on joint probabilities) with S settings and any number of outcomes at each site cannot exceed (2S-1)^{N-1}.
The quantum versions of de Finetti's theorem derived so far express the convergence of n-partite symmetric states, i.e., states that are invariant under permutations of their n parties, towards probabilistic mixtures of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) states. Unfortunately, these theorems only hold in finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, and their direct generalization to infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces is known to fail. Here, we address this problem by considering invariance under orthogonal transformations in phase space instead of permutations in state space, which leads …
Pure quantum spin-$s$ states can be represented by $2s$ points on the sphere, as shown by Majorana in 1932 --- the description has proven particularly useful in the study of rotational symmetries of the states, and a host of other properties, as the points rotate rigidly on the sphere when the state undergoes an $SU(2)$ transformation in Hilbert space. At the same time, the Wilzcek-Zee effect, which involves the cyclic evolution of a degenerate $k$-dimensional linear subspace of the Hilbert space, and the associated holonomy dictated by Schroedinger's equation, have been proposed as a fault-to…
We study the dynamics of the Jaynes-Cummings Model for an array of $N_q$ two level systems (or qubits) interacting with a quantized single mode electromagnetic cavity (or quantum bus). For an initial cavity coherent state $| α>$ and the qubit system in a specified `basin of attraction' in its Hilbert space, we demonstrate the oscillation of a superposition of two macroscopic quantum states between the qubit system and the field mode. From the perspective of either the qubit or the field system, there is collapse and revival of a `Schrödinger Cat' state.
We study multipartite entanglement in a system consisting of indistinguishable fermions. Specifically, we have proposed a geometric entanglement measure for N spin-1/2 fermions distributed over 2L modes (single particle states). The measure is defined on the 2L qubit space isomorphic to the Fock space for 2L single particle states. This entanglement measure is defined for a given partition of 2L modes containing m >= 2 subsets. Thus this measure applies to m <= 2L partite fermionic system where L is any finite number, giving the number of sites. The Hilbert spaces associated with these subsets…
By mapping the Hamiltonians of the two-mode and 2-photon Rabi models to differential operators in suitable Hilbert spaces of entire functions, we prove that the two models possess entire and normalizable wavefunctions in the Bargmann-Hilbert spaces only if the frequency $ω$ and coupling strength $g$ satisfy certain constraints. This is in sharp contrast to the quantum Rabi model for which entire wavefunctions always exist. For model parameters fulfilling the aforesaid constraints we determine transcendental equations whose roots give the regular energy eigenvalues of the models. Furthermore, w…
We consider three-partite pure states in the Hilbert space $\mathbb{C}^2 \otimes \mathbb{C}^m \otimes \mathbb{C}^n$ and investigate to which states a given state can be locally transformed with a non-vanishing probability. Whenever the initial and final states are elements of the same Hilbert space, the problem can be solved via the characterization of the entanglement classes which are determined via stochastic operations and classical communication (SLOCC). In general, there are infinitely many SLOCC classes. However, when considering transformations from higher- to lower-dimensional Hilbert…
We prove the existence for each Hilbert space of the two new quasi hidden variable (qHV) models, statistically noncontextual and context-invariant, reproducing all the von Neumann joint probabilities via nonnegative values of real-valued measures and all the quantum product expectations -- via the qHV (classical-like) average of the product of the corresponding random variables. In a context-invariant model, a quantum observable X can be represented by a variety of random variables satisfying the functional condition required in quantum foundations but each of these random variables equivalent…
We start with the simplest quantum system (a two-level system, i.e., a qubit) and discuss a one-to-one mapping of the quantum state in a two-dimensional Hilbert space to a vector in an eight dimensional probability space (probability simplex). We then show how the usual transformations of the quantum state, specifically the Hadamard gate and the single-qubit phase gate, can be accomplished with appropriate transformations of the mapped vector in the probability simplex. One key defining feature of both the mapping to the simplex and the transformations in the simplex is that they are not linea…
We investigate entanglement measures in the infinite-dimensional regime. First, we discuss the peculiarities that may occur if the Hilbert space of a bi-partite system is infinite-dimensional, most notably the fact that the set of states with infinite entropy of entanglement is trace-norm dense in state space, implying that in any neighborhood of every product state there lies an arbitrarily strongly entangled state. The starting point for a clarification of this counterintuitive property is the observation that if one imposes the natural and physically reasonable constraint that the mean ener…
Generic quantum states in the Hilbert space of a many body system are nearly maximally entangled whereas low energy physical states are not; the so-called area laws for quantum entanglement are widespread. In this paper we introduce the novel concept of entanglement susceptibility by expanding the 2-Renyi entropy in the boundary couplings. We show how this concept leads to the emergence of area laws for bi-partite quantum entanglement in systems ruled by local gapped Hamiltonians. Entanglement susceptibility also captures quantitatively which violations one should expect when the system become…
Two kinds of Bell-states diagonal (BSD) entanglement witnesses (EW) are constructed by using the algebra of Dirac $γ$ matrices in the space-time of arbitrary dimension $d$, where the first kind can detect some BSD relativistic and non-relativistic $m$-partite multispinor bound entangled states in Hilbert space of dimension $2^{m\lfloor d/2\rfloor}$, including the bipartite Bell-type and iso-concurrence type states in the four-dimensional space-time ($d=4$). By using the connection between Hilbert-Schmidt measure and the optimal EWs associated with states, it is shown that as far as the spin qu…
Mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) play a key role in many protocols in quantum science, such as quantum key distribution. However, defining MUBs for arbitrary high-dimensional systems is theoretically difficult, and measurements in such bases can be hard to implement. We show experimentally that efficient quantum state reconstruction of a high-dimensional multi-partite quantum system can be performed by considering only the MUBs of the individual parts. The state spaces of the individual subsystems are always smaller than the state space of the composite system. Thus, the benefit of this method i…
The AdS/CFT correspondence relates quantum entanglement between boundary Conformal Field Theories and geometric connections in the dual asymptotically Anti-de Sitter space-time. We consider entangled states in the n-fold tensor product of a 1+1 dimensional CFT Hilbert space defined by the Euclidean path integral over a Riemann surface with n holes. In one region of moduli space, the dual bulk state is a black hole with n asymptotically AdS_3 regions connected by a common wormhole, while in other regions the bulk fragments into disconnected components. We study the entanglement structure and co…
We study the structure of the inverse limit of the graded algebras of local unitary invariant polynomials using its Hilbert series. For k subsystems, we conjecture that the inverse limit is a free algebra and the number of algebraically independent generators with homogenous degree 2m equals the number of conjugacy classes of index m subgroups in a free group on k-1 generators. Similarly, we conjecture that the inverse limit in the case of k-partite mixed state invariants is free and the number of algebraically independent generators with homogenous degree m equals the number of conjugacy clas…
For all the joint von Neumann measurements on a D-dimensional quantum system, we present the specific example of a context-invariant quasi hidden variable (qHV) model, proved in [Loubenets, J. Math. Phys. 56, 032201 (2015)] to exist for each Hilbert space. In this model, a quantum observable X is represented by a variety of random variables satisfying the functional condition required in quantum foundations but, in contrast to a contextual model, each of these random variables equivalently models X under all joint von Neumann measurements, regardless of their contexts. This, in particular, imp…
In this paper we: 1) show how the smooth geometry of spaces of normal quantum states over W*-algebras (generalised spaces of density matrices) may be used to substantially enrich the description of quantum dynamics in the algebraic and path integral approaches; 2) discuss a framework for postquantum information theories, such that quantum mechanical linearity holds only locally, while the nonlocal multi-user dynamics exhibits some similarity with general relativity. In the algebraic setting, we propose a method of incorporating nonlinear Poisson and relative entropic local dynamics, as well as…
