It is shown that different distinguishability measures impose different orderings on ensembles of $N$ pure quantum states. This is demonstrated using ensembles of equally-probable, linearly independent, symmetrical pure states, with the maximum probabilities of correct hypothesis testing and unambiguous state discrimination being the distinguishability measures. This finding implies that there is no absolute scale for comparing the distinguishability of any two ensembles of $N$ quantum states, and that distinguishability comparison is necessarily relative to a particular discrimination strategy.
We consider a fundamental operational task, distinguishing systems in different states, in the framework of generalized probabilistic theories and provide a general formalism of minimum-error discrimination of states in convex optimization. With the formalism established, we show that the distinguishability is generally a global property assigned to the ensemble of given states rather than other details of a given state space or pairwise relations of given states. Then, we consider bipartite systems where ensemble steering is possible, and show that show that with two operational tasks, ensemb…
A basic property of distinguishability is that it is non-increasing under further quantum operations. Following this, we generalize two measures of distinguishability of pure states--fidelity and von Neumann entropy, to mixed states as self-consistent measures. Then we extend these two measures to quantum operations. The information-theoretic point of the generalized Holevo quantity of an ensemble of quantum operations is constructed. Preferably it is an additive measure. The exact formula for SU(2) ensemble is presented. With the aid of the formula, we show Jozsa-Schlienz paradox that states …
We present a generalization of the Holevo theorem by means of distances used in the definition of distinguishability of states, showing that each one leads to an alternative Holevo theorem. This result involves two quantities: the generalized Holevo information and the generalized accessible information. Additionally, we apply the new inequalities to qubits ensembles showing that for the Kolmogorov notion of distinguishability (for the case of an ensemble of two qubits) the generalized quantities are equal. On the other hand, by using a known example, we show that the Bhattacharyya notion capt…
Consider an ensemble of pure quantum states |ψ_j>, j=1,...,n taken with prior probabilities p_j respectively. We show that it is possible to increase all of the pairwise overlaps |<ψ_i|ψ_j>| i.e. make each constituent pair of the states more parallel (while keeping the prior probabilities the same), in such a way that the von Neumann entropy S is increased, and dually, make all pairs more orthogonal while decreasing S. We show that this phenomenon cannot occur for ensembles in two dimensions but that it is a feature of almost all ensembles of three states in three dimensions. It is known that …
We develop two analytic lower bounds on the probability of success p of identifying a state picked from a known ensemble of pure states: a bound based on the pairwise inner products of the states, and a bound based on the eigenvalues of their Gram matrix. We use the latter to lower bound the asymptotic distinguishability of ensembles of n random quantum states in d dimensions, where n/d approaches a constant. In particular, for almost all ensembles of n states in n dimensions, p>0.72. An application to distinguishing Boolean functions (the "oracle identification problem") in quantum computatio…
A quantum ensemble $\{(p_x, ρ_x)\}$ is a set of quantum states each occurring randomly with a given probability. Quantum ensembles are necessary to describe situations with incomplete a priori information, such as the output of a stochastic quantum channel (generalized measurement), and play a central role in quantum communication. In this paper, we propose measures of distance and fidelity between two quantum ensembles. We consider two approaches: the first one is based on the ability to mimic one ensemble given the other one as a resource and is closely related to the Monge-Kantorovich optim…
We consider a fixed quantum measurement performed over $n$ identical copies of quantum states. Using a rigorous notion of distinguishability We consider a fixed quantum measurement performed over $n$ identical copies of quantum states. Using a rigorous notion of distinguishability based on Shannon's 12th theorem, we show that in the case of a single qubit the number of distinguishable states is $W(α_1,α_2,n)=|α_1-α_2|\sqrt{\frac{2n}{πe}}$, where $(α_1,α_2)$ is the angle interval from which the states are chosen. In the general case of an $N$-dimensional Hilbert space and an area $Ω$ of the dom…
In this paper, we consider the problem of discriminating quantum states by local operations and classical communication (LOCC) when an arbitrarily small amount of error is permitted. This paradigm is known as asymptotic state discrimination, and we derive necessary conditions for when two multipartite states of any size can be discriminated perfectly by asymptotic LOCC. We use this new criterion to prove a gap in the LOCC and separable distinguishability norms. We then turn to the operational advantage of using two-way classical communication over one-way communication in LOCC processing. With…
In this paper we consider the conditions under which a given ensemble of two-qubit states can be optimally distinguished by local operations and classical communication (LOCC). We begin by completing the \emph{perfect} distinguishability problem of two-qubit ensembles - both for separable operations and LOCC - by providing necessary and sufficient conditions for the perfect discrimination of one pure and one mixed state. Then for the well-known task of minimum error discrimination, it is shown that \textit{almost all} two-qubit ensembles consisting of three pure states cannot be optimally disc…
We have experimentally demonstrated the interferometric complementarity, which relates the distinguishability $D$ quantifying the amount of which-way (WW) information to the fringe visibility $V$ characterizing the wave feature of a quantum entity, in a bulk ensemble by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) techniques. We primarily concern on the intermediate cases: partial fringe visibility and incomplete WW information. We propose a quantitative measure of $D$ by an alternative geometric strategy and investigate the relation between $D$ and entanglement. By measuring $D$ and $V$ independently, it…
It is shown that local distinguishability of orthogonal mixed states can be completely characterized by local distinguishability of their supports irrespective of entanglement and mixedness of the states. This leads to two kinds of upper bounds on the number of perfect LOCC distinguishable orthogonal mixed states. The first one depends only on pure-state entanglement within the supports of the states, and therefore may be easy to compute in many instances. The second bound is optimal in the sense that it optimizes the bounding quantities, not necessarily function of entanglement alone, over al…

The indistinguishability of non-orthogonal pure states lies at the heart of quantum information processing. Although the indistinguishability reflects the impossibility of measuring complementary physical quantities by a single measurement, we demonstrate that the distinguishability can be perfectly retrieved simply with the help of posterior classical partial information. We demonstrate this by showing an ensemble of non-orthogonal pure states such that a state randomly sampled from the ensemble can be perfectly identified by a single measurement with help of the post-processing of the measur…
Ensembles of composite quantum states can exhibit nonlocal behaviour in the sense that their optimal discrimination may require global operations. Such an ensemble containing N pairwise orthogonal pure states, however, can always be perfectly distinguished under adaptive local scheme if (N-1) copies of the state are available. In this letter, we provide examples of orthonormal bases in two-qubit Hilbert space whose adaptive discrimination require 3 copies of the state. For this composite system we analyze multi-copy adaptive local distinguishability of orthogonal ensembles in full generality w…
We develop a resource theory of symmetric distinguishability, the fundamental objects of which are elementary quantum information sources, i.e., sources that emit one of two possible quantum states with given prior probabilities. Such a source can be represented by a classical-quantum state of a composite system $XA$, corresponding to an ensemble of two quantum states, with $X$ being classical and $A$ being quantum. We study the resource theory for two different classes of free operations: $(i)$ ${\rm{CPTP}}_A$, which consists of quantum channels acting only on $A$, and $(ii)$ conditional doub…
A quantum analogue of the famous Blackwell Theorem in classical statistics has recently been proposed. Given two quantum channels A and B, a set of payoff functions have been proven to have values for B at least as high as they are for A if and only if there exists a quantum garbling channel E such that A=EB. When such a channel E exists, we can globally compare A and B in terms of their `noisiness'. We show that this method of channel noise comparison is equivalent to one obtained by considering the degradation of the distinguishability of states. Here, the channel A is said to be at least as…
Here we demonstrate generating and storing entanglement in a solid state spin-wave quantum memory with on-demand read out using the process of rephased amplified spontaneous emission (RASE). Amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), resulting from an inverted ensemble of Pr$^{3+}$ ions doped into a Y$_2$SiO$_5$ crystal, generates entanglement between collective states of the praseodymium ensemble and the output light. The ensemble is then rephased using a four-level photon echo technique. Entanglement between the ASE and its echo is confirmed and the inseparability violation preserved when the RAS…
In this paper we take a fresh look at the long standing issue of the nature of macroscopic density fluctuations in the grand canonical treatment of the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). Exploiting the close analogy between the spherical and mean-spherical models of magnetism with the canonical and grand canonical treatment of the ideal Bose gas, we show that BEC stands for different phenomena in the two ensembles: an ordering transition of the type familiar from ferromagnetism in the canonical ensemble and condensation of fluctuations, i.e. growth of macroscopic fluctuations in a single degree…
We prove a concise factor-of-2 estimate for the failure rate of optimally distinguishing an arbitrary ensemble of mixed quantum states, generalizing work of Holevo [Theor. Probab. Appl. 23, 411 (1978)] and Curlander [Ph.D. Thesis, MIT, 1979]. A modification to the minimal principle of Cocha and Poor [Proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Quantum Communication, Measurement, and Computing (Rinton, Princeton, NJ, 2003)] is used to derive a suboptimal measurement which has an error rate within a factor of 2 of the optimal by construction. This measurement is quadratically weighted and…
A quantization method based on replacement of c-number by c-number parameterized by an unbiased hidden random variable is developed. In contrast to canonical quantization, the replacement has straightforward physical interpretation as statistical modification of classical dynamics of ensemble of trajectories, and implies a unique operator ordering. We then apply the method to develop quantum measurement without wave function collapse á la pilot-wave theory.

The Gram matrix of a set of quantum pure states plays key roles in quantum information theory. It has been highlighted that the Gram matrix of a pure-state ensemble can be viewed as a quantum state, and the quantumness of a pure-state ensemble can thus be quantified by the coherence of the Gram matrix [Europhys. Lett. \textbf{134} 30003]. Instead of the $l_1$-norm of coherence and the relative entropy of coherence, we utilize the generalized $α$-$z$-relative Rényi entropy of coherence of the Gram matrix to quantify the quantumness of a pure-state ensemble and explore its properties. We show th…
For distinguishing quantum states sampled from a fixed ensemble, the gap in bipartite and single-party distinguishability can be interpreted as a nonlocality of the ensemble. In this paper, we consider bipartite state discrimination in a composite system consisting of $N$ subsystems, where each subsystem is shared between two parties and the state of each subsystem is randomly sampled from a particular ensemble comprising the Bell states. We show that the success probability of perfectly identifying the state converges to $1$ as $N\rightarrow\infty$ if the entropy of the probability distributi…

Von Neumann use 4 assumptions to derive the Hilbert space (HS) formulation of quantum mechanics (QM). Within this theory dispersion free ensembles do not exist. To accommodate a theory of quantum mechanics that allow dispersion free ensemble some of the assumptions need be modified. An existing formulation of QM, the phase space (PS) formulation allow dispersion free ensembles and thus is qualifies as an hidden variable theory. Within the PS theory we identify the violated assumption (dubbed I in the text) to be the one that requires that the value r for the quantity $\mathbb{R}$ implies the v…
We study the relative entropy of highly excited quantum states. First, we sample states from the Wishart ensemble and develop a large-N diagrammatic technique for the relative entropy. The solution is exactly expressed in terms of elementary functions. We compare the analytic results to small-N numerics, finding precise agreement. Furthermore, the random matrix theory results accurately match the behavior of chaotic many-body eigenstates, a manifestation of eigenstate thermalization. We apply this formalism to the AdS/CFT correspondence where the relative entropy measures the distinguishabilit…
The scattering between light and individual saturable quantum emitters can induce strong optical nonlinearities and correlations between individual light quanta. Typically, this leads to an effective attraction that can generate exotic bound states of photons, which form quantum mechanical precursors of optical solitons, as found in many optical media. Here, we study the propagation of light through an optical waveguide that is chirally coupled to three-level quantum emitters. We show that the additional laser-coupling to a third emitter state not only permits to control the properties of the …
On today's noisy imperfect quantum devices, execution fidelity tends to collapse dramatically for most applications beyond a handful of qubits. It is therefore imperative to employ novel techniques that can boost quantum fidelity in new ways. This paper aims to boost quantum fidelity with Clifford canary circuits by proposing Quancorde: Quantum Canary Ordered Diverse Ensembles, a fundamentally new approach to identifying the correct outcomes of extremely low-fidelity quantum applications. It is based on the key idea of diversity in quantum devices - variations in noise sources, make each (port…
A Hamiltonian formalism is used to describe ensembles of fields in terms of two canonically conjugate functionals (one being the field probability density). The postulate that a classical ensemble is subject to nonclassical fluctuations of the field momentum density, of a strength determined solely by the field uncertainty, is shown to lead to a unique modification of the ensemble Hamiltonian. The modified equations of motion are equivalent to the quantum equations for a bosonic field, and thus this exact uncertainty principle provides a new approach to deriving and interpreting the properties…
The assumption that an ensemble of classical particles is subject to nonclassical momentum fluctuations, with the fluctuation uncertainty fully determined by the position uncertainty, has been shown to lead from the classical equations of motion to the Schroedinger equation. This 'exact uncertainty' approach may be generalised to ensembles of gravitational fields, where nonclassical fluctuations are added to the field momentum densities, of a magnitude determined by the uncertainty in the metric tensor components. In this way one obtains the Wheeler-DeWitt equation of quantum gravity, with the…
We develop a general framework for the open dynamics of an ensemble of quantum particles subject to spacetime fluctuations about the flat background. An arbitrary number of interacting bosonic and fermionic particles are considered. A systematic approach to the generation of gravitational waves in the quantum domain is presented that recovers known classical limits in terms of the quadrupole radiation formula and backreaction dissipation. Classical gravitational emission and absorption relations are quantized into their quantum field theoretical counterparts in terms of the corresponding opera…
