For a bi-partite quantum system defined in a finite dimensional Hilbert space we investigate in what sense entanglement change and interactions imply each other. For this purpose we introduce an entanglement operator, which is then shown to represent a non-conserved property for any bi-partite system and any type of interaction. This general relation does not exclude the existence of special initial product states, for which the entanglement remains small over some period of time, despite interactions. For this case we derive an approximation to the full Schroedinger equation, which allows the treatment of the composite systems in terms of product states. The induced error is estimated. In this factorization-approximation one subsystem appears as an effective potential for the other. A pertinent example is the Jaynes-Cummings model, which then reduces to the semi-classical rotating wave approximation.
We present a simple and general factorization law for quantum systems shared by two parties, which describes the time evolution of entanglement upon passage of either component through an arbitrary noisy channel. The robustness of entanglement-based quantum information processing protocols is thus easily and fully characterized by a single quantity.
We discuss the question of entanglement versus separability of pure quantum states in direct product Hilbert spaces and the relevance of this issue to physics. Different types of separability may be possible, depending on the particular factorization or split of the Hilbert space. A given orthonormal basis set for a Hilbert space is defined to be of type (p,q) if p elements of the basis are entangled and q are separable, relative to a given bi-partite factorization of that space. We conjecture that not all basis types exist for a given Hilbert space.
We propose two algorithms to factor numbers using Gauss sums and entanglement: (i) in a Shor-like algorithm we encode the standard Gauss sum in one of two entangled states and (ii) in an interference algorithm we create a superposition of Gauss sums in the probability amplitudes of two entangled states. These schemes are rather efficient provided that there exists a fast algorithm that can detect a period of a function hidden in its zeros.
There exist zero-temperature states in quantum many-body systems that are fully factorized, thereby possessing vanishing entanglement, and hence being of no use as resource in quantum information processing tasks. Such states can become useful for quantum protocols when the temperature of the system is increased, and when the system is allowed to evolve under either the influence of an external environment, or a closed unitary evolution driven by its own Hamiltonian due to a sudden change in the system parameters. Using the one-dimensional anisotropic XY model in a uniform and an alternating t…
We show that any quantum density matrix can be represented by a Bayesian network (a directed acyclic graph), and also by a Markov network (an undirected graph). We show that any Bayesian or Markov net that represents a density matrix, is logically equivalent to a set of conditional independencies (symmetries) satisfied by the density matrix. We show that the d-separation theorems of classical Bayesian and Markov networks generalize in a simple and natural way to quantum physics. The quantum d-separation theorems are shown to be closely connected to quantum entanglement. We show that the graphi…
We determine the conditions for the existence of a pair of degenerate parity breaking separable eigenstates in general arrays of arbitrary spins connected through $XYZ$ couplings of arbitrary range and placed in a transverse field, not necessarily uniform. Sufficient conditions under which they are ground states are also provided. It is then shown that in finite chains, the associated definite parity states, which represent the actual ground state in the immediate vicinity of separability, can exhibit entanglement between any two spins regardless of the coupling range or separation, with the r…
The dynamics of entanglement between two photons with one of them passing through noisy quantum channels is characterized. It is described by a simple factorization law which was first theoretically proposed by Konrad {\it et al.} [Nature Phys., 4, 99 (2008)]. Quantum state tomography process is employed to reconstruct the reduced density matrixes of the final states and the corresponding concurrences are calculated. Good fittings between experimental results and theoretical predictions are found, which imply the validity of the general factorization law in the characterization of entanglement…
In this work, we consider the question of local Hilbert space factorization in 2D conformal field theory. Generalizing previous work on entanglement and open-closed TQFT, we interpret the factorization of CFT states in terms of path integral processes that split and join the Hilbert spaces of circles and intervals. More abstractly, these processes are cobordisms of an extended CFT which are defined purely in terms of the OPE data. In addition to the usual sewing axioms, we impose an entanglement boundary condition that is satisfied by the vacuum Ishibashi state. This choice of entanglement bou…
We investigate the scaling of the entanglement spectrum and of the Rényi block entropies and determine its universal aspects in the ground state of critical and noncritical one-dimensional quantum spin models. In all cases, the scaling exhibits an oscillatory behavior that terminates at the factorization point and whose frequency is universal. Parity effects in the scaling of the Rényi entropies for gapless models at zero field are thus shown to be a particular case of such universal behavior. Likewise, the absence of oscillations for the Ising chain in transverse field is due to the vanishing…
Distribution of quantum entanglement is investigated for an anisotropic quantum XY model with variable range interactions and in the presence of a uniform transverse magnetic field. We report the possibility of \emph{qualitative} growth in the entanglement between distant sites with an increase in the range of interactions that vary either exponentially or polynomially as the distance between the sites increases. Interestingly, we find that such entanglement enhancement is not ubiquitous and is dependent on the factorization points, a specific set of system parameters where the zero-temperatur…
We disprove the conjecture that structural physical approximations to optimal entanglement witnesses are separable states. The conjecture holds true for extremal decomposable entanglement witnesses.
We discuss the concept of how entanglement changes with respect to different factorizations of the total algebra which describes the quantum states. Depending on the considered factorization a quantum state appears either entangled or separable. For pure states we always can switch unitarily between separability and entanglement, however, for mixed states a minimal amount of mixedness is needed. We discuss our general statements in detail for the familiar case of qubits, the GHZ states, Werner states and Gisin states, emphasizing their geometric features. As theorists we use and play with this…
We study quantum entanglements induced on product states by the action of 8-vertex braid matrices, rendered unitary with purely imaginary spectral parameters (rapidity). The unitarity is displayed via the "canonical factorization" of the coefficients of the projectors spanning the basis. This adds one more new facet to the famous and fascinating features of the 8-vertex model. The double periodicity and the analytic properties of the elliptic functions involved lead to a rich structure of the 3-tangle quantifying the entanglement. We thus explore the complex relationship between topological an…
We discover a simple factorization law describing how multipartite entanglement of a composite quantum system evolves when one of the subsystems undergoes an arbitrary physical process. This multipartite entanglement decay is determined uniquely by a single factor we call the entanglement resilient factor (ERF). Since the ERF is a function of the quantum channel alone, we find that multipartite entanglement evolves in exactly the same way as bipartite (two qudits) entanglement. For the two qubits case, our factorization law reduces to the main result of Nature Physics 4, 99 (2008). In addition…
We investigate the entanglement dynamics of two initially entangled qubits interacting independently with two uncorrelated reservoirs beyond the Markovian approximation. Quite different from the Markovian reservoirs [C. E. Lopez et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 101 (2008) 080503], we find that entanglement sudden birth (ESB) of the two reservoirs occurs without certain symmetry with respect to the entanglement sudden death (ESD) of the two qubits. A phenomenological interpretation of entanglement revival is also given.
Two noninteracting atoms, initially entangled in Bell states, are coupled to a one-mode cavity. Based on the reduced non-perturbative quantum master equation, the entanglement evolution of the two atoms with decay is investigated beyond rotating-wave approximation. It is shown that the counter-rotating wave terms have great influence on the disentanglement behavior. The phenomenon of entanglement sudden death and entanglement sudden birth will occur.
Structural approximations to positive, but not completely positive maps are approximate physical realizations of these non-physical maps. They find applications in the design of direct entanglement detection methods. We show that many of these approximations, in the relevant case of optimal positive maps, define an entanglement breaking channel and, consequently, can be implemented via a measurement and state-preparation protocol. We also show how our findings can be useful for the design of better and simpler direct entanglement detection methods.

The relation between the correlation energy and the entanglement is analytically constructed for the Moshinsky's model of two coupled harmonic oscillators. It turns out that the two quantities are far to be proportional, even at very small couplings. A comparison is made also with the 2-point Ising model.
In the traditional quantum theory, one-dimensional quantum spin models possess a factorization surface where the ground states are fully separable having vanishing bipartite as well as multipartite entanglement. We report that in the non-Hermitian counterpart of these models, these factorization surfaces either can predict the exceptional points where the unbroken-to-broken transition occurs or can guarantee the reality of the spectrum, thereby proposing a procedure to reveal the unbroken phase. We first analytically demonstrate it for the nearest-neighbour rotation-time RT-symmetric XY model …
We revisit the Born-Markov approximation for an open quantum system by considering a microscopic model of the bath, namely, the Bose-Hubbard chain in the parameter region where it is chaotic in the sense of Quantum Chaos. It is shown that strong ergodic properties of the bath justify all approximations required for deriving the Markovian master equation from the first principles.
The exact factorization approach, originally developed for electron-nuclear dynamics, is extended to light-matter interactions within the dipole approximation. This allows for a Schrodinger equation for the photonic wavefunction, in which the potential contains exactly the effects on the photon field of its coupling to matter. We illustrate the formalism and potential for a two-level system representing the matter, coupled to an infinite number of photon modes in the Wigner-Weisskopf approximation, as well as a single mode with various coupling strengths. Significant differences are found with…
We elaborate on the extended Hilbert space factorization of Chern Simons theory and show how this arises naturally from a proper regularization of the entangling surface in the Euclidean path integral. The regularization amounts to stretching the entangling surface into a co-dimension one surface which hosts edge modes of the Chern Simons theory when quantized on a spatial subregion. The factorized state is a regularized Ishibashi state and reproduces the well known topological entanglement entropies. We illustrate how the same factorization arises from the glueing of two spatial subregions vi…
We give an exact solution to the nonlinear optimization problem of approximating a Hermitian matrix by positive semi-definite matrices. Our algorithm was then used to judge whether a quantum state is entangled or not. We show that the exact approximation of a density matrices by tensor product of positive semi-definite operators is determined by the additivity property of the density matrix.
In 2008, the conjecture that structural physical approximations to optimal entanglement witnesses are separable states (in general unnormalized) was posed. In an attempt to disprove it, in [K.-C. Ha and S.-H. Kye, Separable states with unique decompositions, arXiv:1210.1088v3], Ha and Kye proposed a decomposable entanglement witness whose SPA is entangled and argued that it is optimal. In this note, which is based on a comment to the latter work [R. Augusiak et al., Comment on "Separable states with unique decompositions", arXiv:1304.2040v1], we show, both analytically and numerically, that th…
We present analytical solutions to three qubits and a single-mode cavity coupling system beyond the rotating-wave approximation (RWA). The zero-th order approximation gives correct solutions when the qubits are far detuned from the cavity. The first order approximation, called generalized rotating-wave approximation (GRWA), produces an effective solvable Hamiltonian with the same form as the ordinary RWA one and exhibits substantial improvements of energy levels over the RWA even on resonance. Based on these analytical eigen-solutions, we study both the bipartite entanglement and genuine multi…
We investigate the correlations between different bipartitions of an exactly solvable one-dimensional many-body Moshinsky model consisting of Nn "nuclei" and Ne "electrons". We study the dependence of entanglement on the inter-particle interaction strength, on the number of particles, and on the particle masses. Consistent with kinematic intuition, the entanglement between two subsystems vanishes when the subsystems have very different masses, while it attains its maximal value for subsystems of comparable mass. We show how this entanglement feature can be inferred by means of the Born-Oppenhe…
The structural physical approximation (SPA) to a positive map is considered to be one of the most important method to detect entanglement in the real physical world. We first show that an arbitrary entanglement witness (EW) $W$ can be constructed from a separable density matrix $σ$ in the form of $W=σ-c_σ I$, where $c_σ$ is a non-negative number and $I$ is the identity matrix. Following the general form of EWs from separable states, we show a sufficient condition and a sufficient and necessary condition in low dimensions of that SPAs to positive maps do not define entanglement-breaking channel…
Entanglement evolution of two independent Jaynes-Cummings atoms without rotating-wave approximation (RWA) is studied by an numerically exact approach. The previous results in the RWA are essentially modified in the strong coupling regime ($g\ge 0.1$), which has been reached in the recent experiments on the flux qubit coupled to the LC resonator. For the initial Bell state with anti-correlated spins, the entanglement sudden death (ESD) is absent in the RWA, but does appear in the present numerical calculation without RWA. Aperiodic entanglement evolution in the strong coupling regime is observe…
Quantum computation is a continuously growing research area which is based on nature and resources of quantum mechanics, as superposition and entanglement. In its quantum circuits version, the use of convenient and appropriate gates is essential. But while those gates adopt convenient forms for computational algorithms, their design depends on specific quantum systems and stu? being used. These gates need manage quantum systems based on physical interactions ruled by quantum Hamiltonians. With this, gates design is restricted to properties and limitations of interactions and physical elements …
Very recently a conjecture saying that the so-called structural physical approximations (SPAa) to optimal positive maps (optimal entanglement witnesses) give entanglement breaking (EB) maps (separable states) has been posed [J. K. Korbicz {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 78}, 062105 (2008)]. The main purpose of this contribution is to explore this subject. First, we extend the set of entanglement witnesses (EWs) supporting the conjecture. Then, we ask if SPAs constructed from other than the depolarizing channel maps also lead to EB maps and show that in general this is not the case. On the othe…
It is well established that an entanglement encoded in the Bell states of a two-qubit system with correlated spins exhibits completely different evolution properties than that encoded in states with the anti-correlated spins. A complete and abrupt loss of the entanglement, called the entanglement sudden death, can be found to occur for the spin correlated states, but the entanglement evolves without any discontinuity or decays asymptotically for the spin anti-correlated states. We consider the evolution of an initial entanglement encoded in the spin anti-correlated states and demonstrate that …
We derive a set of hierarchical equations for qubits interacting with a Lorentz-broadened cavity mode at zero temperature, without using the rotating-wave, Born, and Markovian approximations. We use this exact method to reexamine the entanglement dynamics of two qubits interacting with a common bath, which was previously solved only under the rotating-wave and single-excitation approximations. With the exact hierarchy equation method used here, we observe significant differences in the resulting physics, compared to the previous results with various approximations. Double excitations due to co…
Efficient electronic structure methods can be built around efficient tensor representations of the wavefunction. Here we describe a general view of tensor factorization for the compact representation of electronic wavefunctions. We use these ideas to construct low-complexity representations of the doubles amplitudes in local second order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory. We introduce two approximations - the direct orbital specific virtual approximation and the full orbital specific virtual approximation. In these approximations, each occupied orbital is associated with a small set of correl…
In quantum systems, entanglement corresponds to nonclassical correlation of nonlocal observables. Thus, entanglement (or, to the contrary, separability) of a given quantum state is not uniquely determined by properties of the state, but may depend on the choice of the factorization of the algebra of observables. In the present work, we expose and systematize some recently reported results about the possibility to represent a single quantum state as either entangled or separable. We will distinguish in particular the cases of pure and mixed states. For pure states, it has been shown that observ…
The role of electron-nuclear entanglement on the validity of the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) approximation is investigated. While nonadiabatic couplings generally lead to entanglement and to a failure of the BO approximation, surprisingly the degree of electron-nuclear entanglement is found to be uncorrelated with the degree of validity of the BO approximation. This is because while the degree of entanglement of BO states is determined by their deviation from the corresponding states in the crude BO approximation, the accuracy of the BO approximation is dictated, instead, by the deviation of the BO …
The entanglement dynamics of two remote qubits is examined analytically. The qubits interact arbitrarily strongly with separate harmonic oscillators in the idealized degenerate limit of the Jaynes-Cummings Hamiltonian. In contrast to well known non-degenerate RWA results, it is shown that ideally degenerate qubits cannot induce bipartite entanglement between their partner oscillators.
We investigate how well the one-dimensional Hubbard model describes the entanglement of particles trapped in a string of quantum wells. We calculate the average single-site entanglement for two particles interacting via a contact interaction and consider the effect of varying the interaction strength and the interwell distance. We compare the results with the ones obtained within the one-dimensional Hubbard model with on-site interaction. We suggest an upper bound for the average single-site entanglement for two electrons in M wells and discuss analytical limits for very large repulsive and at…
We present two methods of calculating the spatial entanglement of an interacting electron system within the framework of density-functional theory. These methods are tested on the model system of Hooke's atom for which the spatial entanglement can be calculated exactly. We analyse how the strength of the confining potential affects the spatial entanglement and how accurately the methods that we introduced reproduce the exact trends. We also compare the results with the outcomes of standard first-order perturbation methods. The accuracies of energies and densities when using these methods are a…
We introduce the notions of positive and copositive types for entanglement witnesses, depending on the distance to the positive part and copositive part. An entanglement witness $W$ is of positive type if and only if its partial transpose $W^Γ$ is of copositive type. We show that if the structural physical approximation of $W$ is separable then $W$ should be of copositive type, and the SPA of $W^Γ$ is never separable unless $W$ is of both positive and copositive type. This shows that the SPA conjecture is meaningful only for those of copositive type. We provide examples to show that the SPA co…
We discuss the application of the static path plus random phase approximation (SPA+RPA) and the ensuing mean field+RPA treatment to the evaluation of entanglement in composite quantum systems at finite temperature. These methods involve just local diagonalizations and the determination of the generalized collective vibrational frequencies. As illustration, we evaluate the pairwise entanglement in a fully connected XXZ chain of $n$ spins at finite temperature in a transverse magnetic field $b$. It is shown that already the mean field+RPA provides an accurate analytic description of the concurre…

The multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz describes quantum many-body states by a hierarchical entanglement structure organized by length scale. Numerically, it has been demonstrated to capture critical lattice models and the data of the corresponding conformal field theories with high accuracy. However, a rigorous understanding of its success and precise relation to the continuum is still lacking. To address this challenge, we provide an explicit construction of entanglement-renormalization quantum circuits that rigorously approximate correlation functions of the massless Dirac confo…
We discuss a general mean field plus random phase approximation (RPA) for describing composite systems at zero and finite temperature. We analyze in particular its implementation in finite systems invariant under translations, where for uniform mean fields it requires just the solution of simple local-type RPA equations. As test and application, we use the method for evaluating the entanglement between two spins in cyclic spin 1/2 chains with both long and short range anisotropic XY-type couplings in a uniform transverse magnetic field. The approach is shown to provide an accurate analytic des…
