Precise definitions for different degrees of controllability for quantum systems are given, and necessary and sufficient conditions are discussed. The results are applied to determine the degree of controllability for various atomic systems with degenerate energy levels and transition frequencies.
We theoretically investigate the optical bistability phenomenon in an ensemble of $N$ non-interacting three-level atoms trapped inside an optical cavity. The atoms are in a $Λ$-level configuration, where one atomic transition is coupled by a cavity mode, while the other one is coupled by a classical field. In addition, we consider a pumping field driving the cavity mode. With this system, we are able to observe new kinds of hysteresis, while scanning either the frequency of the pumping field or the Rabi frequency (intensity) of the control field. We show that they can be highly controllable vi…
We report on deterministic generation of 18-qubit genuinely entangled Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state and multi-component atomic Schrödinger cat states of up to 20 qubits on a quantum processor, which features 20 superconducting qubits interconnected by a bus resonator. By engineering a one-axis twisting Hamiltonian enabled by the resonator-mediated interactions, the system of qubits initialized coherently evolves to an over-squeezed, non-Gaussian regime, where atomic Schrödinger cat states, i.e., superpositions of atomic coherent states including GHZ state, appear at specific time int…
In this paper, we explore the possibilities of realizing weak value amplification (WVA) using purely atomic degrees of freedom. Our scheme identifies the internal electronic states and external motional states of a single trapped $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ion as the system degree and pointer degree respectively, and their controllable weak coupling is provided by a bichromatic light field. In our experimental demonstration, by performing appropriate postselection on the internal states, a position displacement of 4 angstroms (in phase space) of the trapped ion is amplified to 10 nanometers. The sensitivit…
The state of an atom in a bipartite qubit, Jaynes-Cummings (JC) or anti-Jaynes-Cummings (aJC) interaction is described by a reduced density operator. The purity of the state has been measured by taking the trace of the square of the reduced density operator. In this article, we define the square of the reduced density operator as the state purity operator, composed of a completely pure state part and a completely mixed state part. The coefficient of the completely mixed state part is the mixed state measure, formally obtained as the determinant of the reduced density operator and it is therefo…
Spin-wave excitations in ensembles of atoms are gaining attention as a quantum information resource. However, current techniques with atomic spin waves do not achieve universal quantum information processing. We conduct a theoretical analysis of methods to create a high-capacity universal quantum processor and network node using an ensemble of laser-cooled atoms, trapped in a one-dimensional periodic potential and coupled to a ring cavity. We describe how to establish linear quantum processing using a lambda-scheme in a rubidium-atom system, calculate the expected experimental operational fide…
A major trend within the field of cavity QED is to boost the interaction strength between the cavity field and the atomic internal degrees of freedom of the trapped atom by decreasing the mode volume of the cavity. In such systems, it is natural to achieve strong atom-cavity coupling, where the coherent interaction strength exceeds the cavity linewidth, while the linewidth exceeds the atomic trap frequency. While most work focuses on coupling of photons to the internal degrees of freedom, additional rich dynamics can occur by considering the atomic motional degree of freedom as well. In partic…
Atomic level qubits in silicon are attractive candidates for large-scale quantum computing, however, their quantum properties and controllability are sensitive to details such as the number of donor atoms comprising a qubit and their precise location. This work combines machine learning techniques with million-atom simulations of scanning-tunnelling-microscope (STM) images of dopants to formulate a theoretical framework capable of determining the number of dopants at a particular qubit location and their positions with exact lattice-site precision. A convolutional neural network was trained on…

Vector field measurement is demonstrated with an all-optical scalar atomic magnetometer using intrinsic parameters related to its scalar operation. The Bell-Bloom type atomic magnetometer measures the Larmor precession of cesium atoms through on-resonant absorption of a probe beam. While the AC component of the probe signal is used for the field magnitude measurement, the probe DC signal contains information about the polar angle, defined as the angle between the magnetic field and the probe beam. Additional polar angle information is obtained from the light-shift-induced magnetic field caused…
For over twenty years, ultra-cold atomic systems have formed an almost perfect arena for simulating different quantum many-body phenomena and exposing their non-obvious and very often counterintuitive features. Thanks to extremely precise controllability of different parameters they are able to capture different quantum properties which were previously recognized only as theoretical curiosities. Here, we go over the current experimental progress in exploring the curious one-dimensional quantum world of fermions from the perspective of three subjectively selected trends being currently under vi…
Atomic transitions with orthogonal dipole moments can be made to interfere with each other by the use of an anisotropic environment. Here we describe, provide and apply a computational toolbox capable of algorithmically designing three-dimensional photonic environments that enhance the degree of coherence in atomic $Λ$ systems. Example optimisation runs yield approximately double the degree of coherence found using simple planar geometries.
In this paper, we are interested in studying entropy and dynamics entanglement between a single time dependent three-level atom interacting with one-mode cavity field when the atomic motion is taken into account. An exact analytical solution for the wave function is given by using Schrödinger equation for a specific initial condition. The field entropy of this system is investigated in the non-resonant case. The influences of the detuning parameters and atomic motion on the entanglement degree are examined. We show that both of the detuning parameters and atomic motion play important roles in …
We address the system with two species of vector bosons in an optical lattice. In addition to the the standard parameters characterizing such a system, we are dealing here with the "degree of atomic nonidentity", manifesting itself in the difference of tunneling amplitudes and on-site Coulomb interactions. We obtain a cascade of quantum phase transitions occurring with the increase in the degree of atomic nonidentity. In particular, we show that the phase diagram for strongly distinct atoms is qualitatively different from that for (nearly) identical atoms considered earlier. The resulting phas…
Light is an excellent medium for both classical and quantum information transmission due to its speed, manipulability, and abundant degrees of freedom into which to encode information. Recently, space-division multiplexing has gained attention as a means to substantially increase the rate of information transfer by utilizing sets of infinite-dimensional propagation eigenmodes such as the Laguerre-Gaussian 'donut' modes. Encoding in these high-dimensional spaces necessitates devices capable of manipulating photonic degrees of freedom with high efficiency. In this work, we demonstrate controllin…
