Models describing one- and two-photon transitions for ions in crystalline environments are unified and extended to the case of parity-allowed and parity- forbidden p-photon transitions. The number of independent parameters for characterizing the polarization dependence is shown to depend on an ensemble of properties and rules which combine symmetry considerations and physical models.

Symmetry adaptation techniques are applied to the determination of the intensity of two-photon absorption transitions, between Stark levels of configurations with opposite parities, for transition ions in finite symmetry environments. The role of symmetry adaptation techniques in multi-photon spectroscopy of partly-filled shell ions in crystals is briefly reviewed. This leads to an intensity formula which is discussed from a qualitative point of view.

Symmetry Adaptation and Two-Photon Spectroscopy of Ions in Molecular or Solid-State Finite Symmetry

Finite symmetry adaptation techniques are applied to the determination of the intensity strength of two-photon transitions for ions with one partly-filled shell nl in crystalline environments of symmetry G. We treat the case of intra- configurational transitions as well as the case of inter-configurational transitions. In both cases, the Wigner-Racah algebra of the chain O(3) > G allows to extract the polarization dependence from the intensity. The reported results are valid for any strength of the crystalline field.

Two-Photon Spectroscopy of Transition-Metal Ions in Cubical Symmetry

Symmetry adaptation techniques are applied to the determination of intensities of intra-configurational two-photon transitions for transition-metal ions in cubical symmetry. This leads to a simple model giving the polarization dependence of intensities of two-photon (electric dipolar) transitions between Stark levels of the configuration 3dN (N = even or odd).

This review presents the Laser-Induced Fluorescence Spectroscopy (LIFS) of trapped gas-phase molecular ions. A brief description of the theory and experimental approaches involved in fluorescence spectroscopy, together with state-of-the-art LIFS experiments employing ion traps, is presented. Scaling rules for the ionization of biological molecules by highly charged ions

We investigate scaling rules for the ionization cross sections of multicharged ions on molecules of biological interest. The cross sections are obtained using a methodology presented in [Mendez et al. J. Phys B (2020)], which considers distorted-wave calculations for atomic targets combined with a molecular stoichiometric model. We examine ions with nuclear charges Z from +1 to +8 impacting on five nucleobases -adenine, cytosine, guanine, thymine, uracil-, tetrahydrofuran, pyrimidine, and water. Spectroscopy of corannulene cations in helium nanodroplets

Helium tagging in action spectroscopy is an efficient method for measuring the absorption spectrum of complex molecular ions with minimal perturbations to the gas phase spectrum. We have used superfluid helium nanodroplets doped with corannulene to prepare cations of these molecules complexed with different numbers of He atoms. In total we identify 13 different absorption bands from corannulene cations between 5500 Å and 6000 Å. Photo-stability of super-hydrogenated PAHs determined by action spectroscopy experiments

We have investigated the photo-stability of pristine and super-hydrogenated pyrene cations C$_{16}$H$_{10+m}^+, m = 0,6, \mathrm{\ or\ } 16$) by means of gas-phase action spectroscopy. Optical absorption spectra and photo-induced dissociation mass spectra are presented. By measuring the yield of mass-selected photo-fragment ions as a function of laser pulse intensity, the number of photons (and hence the energy) needed for fragmentation of the carbon backbone was determined.
