We propose to observe the Efimov effect experimentally by applying an external electric field on atomic three-body systems. We first derive the lowest order effective two-body interaction for two spin zero atoms in the field. Then we solve the three-body problem and search for the extreme spatially extended Efimov states. We use helium trimers as an illustrative numerical example and estimate the necessary field strength to be less than 2.7 V/angstrom.
We consider the Efimov trimer theory as a possible framework to explain recently observed losses by inelastic three-body collisions in a three-hyperfine-component ultracold mixture of lithium 6. Within this framework, these losses would arise chiefly from the existence of an Efimov trimer bound state below the continuum of free triplets of atoms, and the loss maxima (at certain values of an applied magnetic field) would correspond to zero-energy resonances where the trimer dissociates into three free atoms. Our results show that such a trimer state is indeed possible given the two-body scatter…
We derive an analytic formula which describes the final bound state dependence in ultracold three-body recombination. Using an energy-dependent loss parameter, the recently observed broad resonance in an ultracold gas of $^{6}$Li atoms [T. B. Ottenstein {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 203202 (2008)l J. H. Huckans {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 165302 (2009)] is described quantitatively. We also provide an analytic and approximation for the three-body recombination rate which encapsulates the underlying physics of the universal three-body recombination process.
The multichannel Efimov physics is investigated in ultracold heteronuclear admixtures of K and Rb atoms. We observe a shift in the scattering length where the first atom-dimer resonance appears in the $^{41}$K-$^{87}$Rb system relative to the position of the previously observed atom-dimer resonance in the $^{40}$K-$^{87}$Rb system. This shift is well explained by our calculations with a three-body model including the van der Waals interactions, and, more importantly, the multichannel spinor physics. With only minor difference in the atomic masses of the admixtures, the shift in the atom-dimer …
A Fermi-Fermi mixture of 40K and 6Li does not exhibit the Efimov effect in a free space, but the Efimov effect can be induced by confining only 40K in one dimension. Here the Efimov's three-body parameter is controlled by the confinement length. We show that the three-body recombination rate in such a system in the dilute limit has a characteristic logarithmic-periodic dependence on the effective scattering length with the scaling factor 22.0 and can be expressed by formulas similar to those for identical bosons in three dimensions. The ultracold mixture of 40K and 6Li in the 1D-3D mixed dimen…
We study Efimov resonances via three-body loss in an ultracold two-component gas of fermionic $^6$Li and bosonic $^{133}$Cs atoms close to a Feshbach resonance at 843~G, extending results reported previously [Pires \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 250404 (2014)] to temperatures around 120~nK. The experimental scheme for reaching lower temperatures is based upon compensating the gravity-induced spatial separation of the mass-imbalanced gases with bichromatic optical dipole traps. We observe the first and second excited Li-Cs-Cs Efimov resonance in the magnetic field dependence of the thre…
We measure the critical scattering length for the appearance of the first three-body bound state, or Efimov three-body parameter, at seven different Feshbach resonances in ultracold 39K atoms. We study both intermediate and narrow resonances, where the three-body spectrum is expected to be determined by the non-universal coupling of two scattering channels. We observe instead approximately the same universal relation of the three-body parameter with the two-body van der Waals radius already found for broader resonances, which can be modeled with a single channel. This unexpected observation su…
We analyse the recent experiments investigating the low-energy physics of three lithium 6 atoms in different internal states with resonant two-body scattering lengths. All observed features are qualitatively consistent with the expected Efimov effect, i.e. the effective universal three-body attraction that arises for large values of the scattering lengths. However, we find that a quantitative description at negative energy requires non-universal two- and three-body corrections due to presently unknown behaviour at short distance. An attempt to implement these corrections is made through energy…
We investigate theoretically and experimentally the heteronuclear Efimov scenario for a three-body system that consists of two bosons and one distinguishable particle with positive intraspecies scattering lengths. The three-body parameter at the three-body scattering threshold and the scaling factor between consecutive Efimov resonances are found to be controlled by the scattering length between the two bosons, approximately independent of short-range physics. We observe two excited-state Efimov resonances in the three-body recombination spectra of an ultracold mixture of fermionic $^6 $Li and…
We study the quench of a degenerate ultracold Bose gas to the unitary regime, where interactions are as strong as allowed by quantum mechanics. We lay the foundations of a cumulant theory able to capture simultaneously the three-body Efimov effect and ergodic evolution. After an initial period of rapid quantum depletion, a universal prethermal stage is established characterized by a kinetic temperature and an emergent Bogoliubov dispersion law while the microscopic degrees of freedom remain far-from-equilibrium. Integrability is then broken by higher-order interaction terms in the many-body Ha…
Using a generalized Bohr model and the hyper-spherical formalism for a three-body system, we derive the Thomas theorem assuming a simple interaction depending on the range of the potential. We discuss the conditions for which an unbound two-body system produces a bound three-body system and derive universal energy functions. We apply our model to $^{4}$He and Triton atoms as well as to the triton nucleus. Using their scattering lengths and effective ranges, we are able to reproduce the two-body or the three-body binding energies with only one parameter fitted. Prediction for excited (Efimov) l…
We find that universal three-body physics extends beyond the threshold regime to non-zero energies. For ultracold atomic gases with a negative two-body $s$-wave scattering length near a Feshbach resonance, we show the resonant peaks characteristic of Efimov physics persist in three-body recombination to higher collision energies. For this and other inelastic processes, we use the adiabatic hyperspherical representation to derive universal analytical expressions for their dependence on the scattering length, the collision energy, and --- for narrow resonances --- the effective range. These expr…
This article reviews theoretical and experimental advances in Efimov physics, an array of quantum few-body and many-body phenomena arising for particles interacting via short-range resonant interactions, that is based on the appearance of a scale-invariant three-body attraction theoretically discovered by Vitaly Efimov in 1970. This three-body effect was originally proposed to explain the binding of nuclei such as the triton and the Hoyle state of carbon-12, and later considered as a simple explanation for the existence of some halo nuclei. It was subsequently evidenced in trapped ultra-cold a…
We study Efimov physics for three identical bosons interacting via a pairwise square-well potential, analyze the validity of the separable approximation as a function of the interaction strength, and investigate what is needed to improve this approximation. We find separable approximations to be accurate for potentials with just one (nearly) bound dimer state. For potentials with more bound or almost bound dimer states, these states need to be included for an accurate determination of the Efimov spectrum and the corresponding three-body observables. We also show that a separable approximation …
When two particles attract via a resonant short-range interaction, three particles always form an infinite tower of bound states characterized by a discrete scaling symmetry. It has been considered that this Efimov effect exists only in three dimensions. Here we review how the Efimov physics can be liberated from three dimensions by considering two-body and three-body interactions in mixed dimensions and four-body interaction in one dimension. In such new systems, intriguing phenomena appear, such as confinement-induced Efimov effect, Bose-Fermi crossover in Efimov spectrum, and formation of i…
We observe two consecutive heteronuclear Efimov resonances in an ultracold Li-Cs mixture by measuring three-body loss coefficients as a function of magnetic field near a Feshbach resonance. The first resonance is detected at a scattering length of $a_-^{(1)}=-320(10)~a_0$ corresponding to $\sim 7 $ ($\sim 3$) times the Li-Cs (Cs-Cs) van der Waals range. The second resonance appears at $5.8(1.0) a_-^{(1)}$ close to the unitarity-limited regime at the sample temperature of 450 nK. Indication of a third resonance is found in the atom loss spectra. The scaling of the resonance positions is close t…
While Efimov physics in ultracold atoms is usually modeled with an isolated Feshbach resonance many real world resonances appear in close vicinity to each other and are therefore overlapping. Here we derive a realistic model based on the mutual coupling of an open channel and two closed molecular channels while neglecting short-range physics as permitted by the narrow character of the considered resonances. The model is applied to three distinct scenarios with experimental relevance. We show that the effect of overlapping resonances is manifested most strikingly at a narrow resonance in whose …
We address the microscopic origin of the universal three-body parameter that fixes the spectrum of three-atom systems in the Efimov regime. We identify it with the van der Waals two-body correlation, which causes the three-atom system to deform when the three atoms come within the distance of the van der Waals length, effectively preventing them from coming closer due to the kinetic-energy cost associated with this three-body deformation. This deformation mechanism explains the universal ratio of the scattering length at the triatomic resonance to the van der Waals length observed in several e…
Systems of three particles show a surprising feature in their bound state spectrum: a series of geometrically scaled states, known as Efimov states. These states have not yet been observed directly, but many recent experiments show indirect evidence of their existence via the so-called recombination process. The theories that predict the Efimov states also predicts either resonant enhancement of the recombination process or suppression by destructive interference, depending on the sign of the interaction between the particles. The theories predict universal features for the Efimov states, for …
We calculated, using seven realistic 4He-4He potentials in the literature, the Efimov spectra of the 4He trimer and tetramer and analyzed the universality of the systems. The three-(four-)body Schroedinger equations were solved fully nonadiabatically with the high-precision calculation method employed in our previous work on the 4He trimer and tetramer [Phys. Rev. A 85, 022502 (2012); 85, 062505 (2012)]. We found the following universality in the four-boson system: i) The critical scattering lengths at which the tetramer ground and excited states couple to the four-body threshold are independe…
We consider a system of three helium-4 atoms, which is so far the simplest realistic three-body system exhibiting the Efimov effect, in order to analyse deviations from the universal Efimov three-body spectrum. We first calculate the bound states using a realistic two-body potential, and then analyse how they can be reproduced by simple effective models beyond Efimov's universal theory. We find that the non-universal variations of the first two states can be well reproduced by models parametrized with only three quantities: the scattering length and effective range of the original potential, a…
We study the stability of a thermal $^{39}$K Bose gas across a broad Feshbach resonance, focusing on the unitary regime, where the scattering length $a$ exceeds the thermal wavelength $λ$. We measure the general scaling laws relating the particle-loss and heating rates to the temperature, scattering length, and atom number. Both at unitarity and for positive $a \ll λ$ we find agreement with three-body theory. However, for $a<0$ and away from unitarity, we observe significant four-body decay. At unitarity, the three-body loss coefficient, $L_3 \propto λ^4$, is three times lower than the univers…
The elastic scattering properties of three bosons at low energy enter the many-body description of ultracold Bose gases via the three-body scattering hypervolume $D$. We study this quantity for identical bosons that interact via a pairwise finite-range potential. Our calculations cover the regime from strongly repulsive potentials towards attractive potentials supporting multiple two-body bound states and are consistent with the few existing predictions for $D$. We present the first numerical confirmation of the universal predictions for $D$ in the strongly interacting regime, where Efimov phy…
In Efimov physics, a three-body parameter (3BP), previously regarded as nonuniversal, uniquely defines bound and scattering properties of three particles. A universal 3BP, however, have been recently shown in experiments and theory in ultracold homonuclear gases. Our present study further predicts a universal 3BP for heteronuclear atomic systems near broad Feshbach resonances, and provides physical interpretations for its origin. We show that for a system composed of two light and one heavy atoms, the physical origin of the universal 3BP is similar to the homonuclear case while for systems com…
We have investigated S-wave bound states composed of three identical bosons interacting via regulated delta function potentials in non-relativistic quantum mechanics. For low-energy systems, these short-range potentials serve as an approximation to the underlying physics, leading to an effective field theory. A method for perturbatively expanding the three-body bound-state equation in inverse powers of the cutoff is developed. This allows us to extract some analytical results concerning the behavior of the system. Further results are obtained by solving the leading order equations numerically …
The Three-Body Parameter(3BP) $a^{\scriptscriptstyle(1)}_{\scriptscriptstyle-}$ is crucial to understanding Efimov physics, and a universal 3BP has been shown in experiments and theory in ultracold homonuclear gases. The 3BP of heteronuclear systems was predicted to possess much richer properties than the homonuclear counterparts for the large parameter space. In this work, we investigate the universal properties of $a^{\scriptscriptstyle(1)}_{\scriptscriptstyle-}$ for the Heavy-Heavy-Light(HHL) system with negative intraspecies scattering length $a_{\scriptscriptstyle HH}$. We find that $a^{\…
We present an implementation of the relativistic three-particle quantization condition including both $s$- and $d$-wave two-particle channels. For this, we develop a systematic expansion about threshold of the three-particle divergence-free K matrix, $\mathcal{K}_{\mathrm{df,3}}$, which is a generalization of the effective range expansion of the two-particle K matrix, $\mathcal{K}_2$. Relativistic invariance plays an important role in this expansion. We find that $d$-wave two-particle channels enter first at quadratic order. We explain how to implement the resulting multichannel quantization c…
In slow collisions of two bare nuclei with the total charge larger than the critical value $Z_{\rm cr} \approx 173$, the initially neutral vacuum can spontaneously decay into the charged vacuum and two positrons. Detection of the spontaneous emission of positrons would be the direct evidence of this fundamental phenomenon. However, the spontaneously produced particles are indistinguishable from the dynamical background in the positron spectra. We show that the vacuum decay can nevertheless be observed via impact-sensitive measurements of pair-production probabilities. Possibility of such obser…
