The results of a theoretical investigation on the stopping power of ion pair in a magnetized electron plasma are presented, with particular emphasis on the two-ion correlation effects. The analysis is based on the assumptions that the magnetic field is classically strong ($λ_B\ll a_c\ll λ_D$, where $λ_B$, $a_c$ and $λ_D$ are respectively the electron de Broglie wavelength, Larmor radius and Debye length) and that the velocity of the two ions is identical and fixed. The stopping power and % vicinage function in a plasma are computed by retaining two-ion correlation effects and is compared with the results of the individual-projectile approximation.
The wakefield and stopping power of an ion-beam pulse moving in magnetized plasmas are investigated by particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. The effects of beam velocity and density on the wake and stopping power are discussed. In the presence of magnetic field, it is found that beside the longitudinal conversed V-shaped wakes, the strong whistler wave are observed when low-density and low-velocity pulses moving in plasmas. The corresponding stopping powers are enhanced due to the drag of these whistler waves. As beam velocities increase, the whistler waves disappear, and only are conversed V-sh…
The friction force on a test particle traveling through a plasma that is both strongly coupled and strongly magnetized is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. In addition to the usual stopping power component aligned antiparallel to the velocity, a transverse component that is perpendicular to both the velocity and Lorentz force is observed. This component, which was recently discovered in weakly coupled plasmas, is found to increase in both absolute and relative magnitude in the strongly coupled regime. Strong coupling is also observed to induce a third component of the friction forc…
Coulomb collisions in plasmas are typically modeled using the Boltzmann collision operator, or its variants, which apply to weakly magnetized plasmas in which the typical gyroradius of particles significantly exceeds the Debye length. Conversely, O'Neil has developed a kinetic theory to treat plasmas that are so strongly magnetized that the typical gyroradius of particles is much smaller than the distance of closest approach in a binary collision. Here, we develop a generalized collision operator that applies across the full range of magnetization strength. To demonstrate novel physics associa…
Plasmas in strong magnetic fields have been mainly studied in two distinct limiting cases--that of weak and strong nonideality with very different physical properties. While the former is well described by the familiar theory of Braginskii, the latter regime is closer to the behavior of a Coulomb liquid. Here we study in detail the transition between both regimes. We focus on the evolution of the dynamic structure factor of the magnetized one-component plasma from weak to strong coupling, which is studied with first-principle molecular dynamics simulations. The simulations show the vanishing o…
A magnetic field was recently shown to enhance field-parallel heat conduction in a strongly correlated plasma whereas cross-field conduction is reduced. Here we show that in such plasmas, the magnetic field has the additional effect of inhibiting the isotropization process between field-parallel and cross-field temperature components thus leading to the emergence of strong and long-lived temperature anisotropies when the plasma is locally perturbed. An extended heat equation is shown to describe this process accurately.
Plasmas that are strongly magnetized in the sense that the gyrofrequency exceeds the plasma frequency exhibit novel transport properties that are not well understood. As a representative example, we compute the friction force acting on a massive test charge moving through a strongly coupled and strongly magnetized one-component plasma using a generalized Boltzmann kinetic theory. Recent works studying the weakly coupled regime have shown that strong magnetization leads to a transverse component of the friction force that is perpendicular to both the Lorentz force and velocity of the test charg…
Three-dimensional (3D) simulations of electron beams propagating in high energy density (HED) plasmas using the quasi-static Particle-in-Cell (PIC) code QuickPIC demonstrate a significant increase in stopping power when beam electrons mutually interact via their wakes. Each beam electron excites a plasma wave wake of wavelength $\sim2πc/ω_{pe}$, where $c$ is the speed of light and $ω_{pe}$ is the background plasma frequency. We show that a discrete collection of electrons undergoes a beam-plasma like instability caused by mutual particle-wake interactions that causes electrons to bunch in the …
In a classical ideal plasma, a magnetic field is known to reduce the heat conductivity perpendicular to the field whereas it does not alter the one along the field. Here we show that, in strongly correlated plasmas that are observed at high pressure or/and low temperature, a magnetic field reduces the perpendicular heat transport much less and even {\it enhances} the parallel transport. These surprising observations are explained by the competition of kinetic, potential and collisional contributions to the heat conductivity. Our results are based on first principle molecular dynamics simulatio…
Interplay of transition of floating potential fluctuations in a glow discharge plasma in the toroidal vacuum vessel of SINP tokamak has been observed. With variation in the strength of the vertical and toroidal magnetic fields, regular and inverted relaxation oscillations as well as sinusoidal oscillations are observed with the slow and fast time scale of the relaxation oscillations reversing their nature at a high value of vertical magnetic field strength. However for small value of toroidal magnetic field the transitions follow relaxation $\rightarrow$ chaotic oscillations with the chaotic n…

This work, which extends Squire et al. [ApJL, 830 L25 (2016)], explores the effect of self-generated pressure anisotropy on linearly polarized shear-Alfvén fluctuations in low-collisionality plasmas. Such anisotropies lead to stringent limits on the amplitude of magnetic perturbations in high-beta plasmas, above which a fluctuation can destabilize itself through the parallel firehose instability. This causes the wave frequency to approach zero, "interrupting" the wave and stopping its oscillation. These effects are explored in detail in the collisionless and weakly collisional "Braginskii" reg…
Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that a fundamental symmetry of plasma kinetic theory is broken at moderate to strong Coulomb coupling: the collision rate depends on the signs of the colliding charges. This symmetry breaking is analogous to the Barkas effect observed in charged-particle stopping experiments and gives rise to significantly enhanced electron-ion collision rates. It is expected to affect any neutral plasma with moderate to strong Coulomb coupling such as ultracold neutral plasmas (UNP) and the dense plasmas of ICF and laser-matter interaction experiments. The physical mechan…
We investigate the energy loss characteristics of warm dense matter (WDM) and dense plasmas concentrating on the influence of electronic correlations. The basis for our analysis is a recently developed ab initio Quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) based machine-learning representation of the static local field correction (LFC) [Dornheim et al., J. Chem. Phys. 151, 194104 (2019)], which provides an accurate description of the dynamical density response function of the electron gas at the considered parameters. We focus on the polarization-induced stopping power due to free electrons, the friction functio…
