Plasma toroidal metric singularities in helical devices and tokamaks, giving rise to magnetic surfaces inside the plasma devices are investigated in two cases. In the first we consider the case of a rotational plasma on an helical device with circular cross-section and dissipation. In this case singularities are shown to place a Ricci scalar curvature bound on the radius of the surface where the Ricci scalar is the contraction of the constant Riemannian curvature tensor of magnetic surfaces. An upper bound on the initial magnetic field in terms of the Ricci scalar is obtained. This last bound may be useful in the engineering construction of plasma devices in laboratories. The normal poloidal drift velocity is also computed. In the second case a toroidal metric is used to show that there is a relation between singularities and the type of tearing instabilities considered in the tokamak. Besides, in this case Ricci collineations and Killing symmetries are computed. The pressure is computed by applying these constraints to the pressure equations in tokamaks.
Recent MHD simulations find that the reversal of the local resistive interchange parameter $D_R$ from negative to positive due to impurity radiation cooling is able to trigger the resistive tearing mode growth in a tokamak above a threshold in impurity level. A layer of perturbed Pfirsch-Schlüter current density and resistivity are also induced by the impurity radiation, which further govern the tearing mode growth and saturation in the nonlinear stage. The impurity threshold and the tearing mode growth strongly depend on the parallel thermal conductivity, and such a dependence derives from th…
Riemannian geometrical tools, such as Ricci collineations and Killing symmetries, so often used in Einstein general theory of gravitation are here applied to plasma physics to build magnetic surfaces from Einstein plasma metrics used in tokamak devices. It is shown that the Killing symmetries are constrains the Einstein magnetic surfaces while the Killing vectors are built in terms of the displacement of the toroidal surface. The pressure is computed by applying these constraints to the pressure equations in tokamaks. A method, based on the sign of the only nontrivial constant Riemann curvatur…
Starting from expressions in Connor et al. (1988) [1], we derive a one-dimensional tearing equation similar to the approximate equation obtained by Hegna and Callen (1984) [2] and by Nishimura et al (1998) [3], but for more realistic toroidal equilibria. The intention is to use this approximation to explore the role of steep profiles, bootstrap currents and strong shaping in the vicinity of a separatrix, on the stability of tearing modes which are resonant in the H-mode pedestal region of finite aspect ratio, shaped cross-section tokamaks, e.g. JET. We discuss how this one-dimensional model fo…
In magnetic configurations with two or three q=1 (with q being the safety factor) resonant surfaces in a tokamak plasma, resistive magnetohydrodynamic modes with poloidal mode numbers m much larger than 1 are found to be linearly unstable. It is found that these high-m double or triple tearing modes significantly enhance through nonlinear interactions, the growth of the m=1 mode. This may account for the sudden onset of the internal resistive kink, i.e., the fast sawtooth trigger. Based on the subsequent reconnection dynamics that can proceed without formation of the m=1 islands, it is propose…
Tearing modes in tokamaks typically rotate while small and then lock at a fixed location when larger. Research on present-day devices has focused almost exclusively on stabilisation of rotating modes, as it has been considered imperative to avoid locked modes. However, in larger devices, stabilisation during the rotating phase is made difficult by fast locking at small island widths, and large broadening of the stabilising wave-driven current profile. In contrast, the smaller island width at locking not only mitigates the deleterious consequences of locked modes, but also permits their efficie…
An investigation is made into the effect of the reduction in anomalous perpendicular electron heat transport inside the separatrix of a magnetic island chain associated with a neoclassical tearing mode in a tokamak plasma, due to the flattening of the electron temperature profile in this region, on the overall stability of the mode. The onset of the neoclassical tearing mode is governed by the ratio of the divergences of the parallel and perpendicular electron heat fluxes in the vicinity of the island chain. By increasing the degree of transport reduction, the onset of the mode, as the diverge…
A model system of equations has been derived to describe a toroidally rotating tokamak plasma, unstable to Resistive Wall Modes (RWMs) and metastable to Neoclassical Tearing Modes (NTMs), using a linear RWM model and a nonlinear NTM model. If no wall is present, the NTM growth shows the typical threshold/saturation island widths, whereas a linearly unstable kink mode grows exponentially in this model plasma system. When a resistive wall is present, the growth of the linearly unstable RWM is accelerated by an unstable island: a form of coupled RWM-NTM mode. Crucially, this coupled system has no…
The onset and characteristics of Micro-Tearing Modes (MTM) in the core of spherical (NSTX) and conventional tokamaks (ASDEX-UG and JET) are studied through local linear gyrokinetic simulations with gyro [J. Candy and E. Belli, General Atomics Report GA-A26818 (2011)]. For experimentally relevant core plasma parameters in the NSTX and ASDEX-UG tokamaks, in agreement with previous works, we find MTMs as the dominant linear instability. Also, for JET-like core parameters considered in our study an MTM is found as the most unstable mode. In all these plasmas, finite collisionality is needed for MT…
Recent gyrokinetic stability calculations have revealed that the spherical tokamak is susceptible to tearing parity instabilities with length scales of a few ion Larmor radii perpendicular to the magnetic field lines. Here we investigate this 'micro-tearing' mode in greater detail to uncover its key characteristics, and compare it with existing theoretical models of the phenomenon. This has been accomplished using a full numerical solution of the linear gyrokinetic-Maxwell equations. Importantly, the instability is found to be driven by the free energy in the electron temperature gradient as d…
We present experimental results of magnetic feedback control on the m=2, n=1 tearing mode in RFX-mod operated as a circular ohmically heated tokamak. The feedback suppression of the non-resonant m=2, n=1 Resistive Wall Mode (RWM) in q(a)<2 plasmas is a well-established result of RFX-mod. The control of the tearing counterpart, which develops in q(a)>2 equilibrium, is instead a more difficult issue. In fact, the disruption induced by a growing amplitude m=2, n=1 tearing mode can be prevented by feedback only when the resonant surface q=2 is close to the plasma edge, namely 2<q(a)<2.5, and the e…
The tearing mode, a large-scale MHD instability in tokamak, typically disrupts the equilibrium magnetic surfaces, leads to the formation of magnetic islands, and reduces core electron temperature and density, thus resulting in significant energy losses and may even cause discharge termination. This process is unacceptable for ITER. Therefore, the accurate identification of a magnetic island in real time is crucial for the effective control of the tearing mode in ITER in the future. In this study, based on the characteristics induced by tearing modes, an attention-aware convolutional neural net…
Configurations with nearby multiple resonant surfaces have broad spectra of linearly unstable coupled tearing modes with dominant high poloidal mode numbers m. This was recently shown for the case of multiple q = 1 resonances [Bierwage et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 94 (6), 65001 (2005)]. In the present work, similar behavior is found for double tearing modes (DTM) on resonant surfaces with q >= 1. A detailed analysis of linear instability characteristics of DTMs with various mode numbers m is performed using numerical simulations. The mode structures and dispersion relations for linearly unstable m…
When electron cyclotron (EC) driven current is first applied to the inside of a magnetic island, the current spreads throughout the island and after a short period achieves a steady level. Using a two equation fluid model for the EC current that allows us to examine this early evolution in detail, we analyze high-resolution simulations of a 2/1 classical tearing mode in a low-beta large aspect-ratio circular tokamak. These simulations use a nonlinear 3D reduced-MHD fluid model and the JOREK code. During the initial period where the EC driven current grows and spreads throughout the magnetic is…
A gyrokinetic simulation of the influence of electron cyclotron current drive and ion kinetic effect on the m/n=2/1 tearing mode (TM) instabilities is presented in HL-2A and DIII-D tokamak configurations. The TM evolution is calculated with a finite mass electron model and the rf current source is obtained by ray-tracing and the Fokker-Planck method. The TMs are found to be perfectly stabilized by a continuous 1MW 68GHz X2-mode in HL-2A tokamak, while instabilities in the DIII-D discharge (with lower value of CR=I_{rf}/I_{0}, where Irf is the wave driven current and I0 is the equilibrium plasm…
In large hot tokamaks like JET, the width of the reconnecting layer for resistive modes is determined by semi-collisional electron dynamics and is much less than the ion Larmor radius. Firstly a dispersion relation valid in this regime is derived which provides a unified description of drift-tearing modes, kinetic Alfven waves and the internal kink mode at low beta. Tearing mode stability is investigated analytically recovering the stabilising ion orbit effect, obtained previously by Cowley et al. [Phys. Fluids (29) 3230 1986], which implies large values of the tearing mode stability parameter…
Massive gas injection (MGI) experiments have been carried out in many tokamaks to study disruption dynamics and mitigation schemes. Two events often observed in those experiments are the excitation of the $m=2, n=1$ magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) mode, and the formation of cold bubble structure in the temperature distribution before the thermal quench (TQ). Here $m$ is the poloidal mode number, $n$ the toroidal mode number. The physics mechanisms underlying those phenomena, however, have not been entirely clear. In this work, our recent NIMROD simulations of the MGI process in a tokamak have reprod…
It is pointed that there is a current jump between the edge plasma inside the last closed magnetic surface and the scrape-off layer and the current jump can lead the external kink modes to convert to the tearing modes, due to the current interchange effects [L. J. Zheng and M. Furukawa, Phys. Plasmas 17, 052508 (2010)]. The magnetic reconnection in the presence of tearing modes subsequently causes the tokamak edge plasma to be peeled off to link to the diverters. In particular, the peeling or peeling-ballooning modes can become the "peeling-off" modes in this sense. This phenomenon indicates t…
A comprehensive two-fluid nonlinear theory of magnetic reconnection driven at a single, tearing-stable, rational surface embedded in an H-mode tokamak plasma is presented. The surface is assumed to be resonant with one of the dominant helical harmonics of an applied resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP). The theory described in this paper is highly relevant to the problem of understanding the physics of RMP-induced edge localized mode (ELM) suppression in tokamak plasmas.
A detailed understanding of island seeding is crucial to avoid (N)TMs and their negative consequences like confinement degradation and disruptions. In the present work, we investigate the growth of 2/1 islands in response to magnetic perturbations. Although we use externally applied perturbations produced by resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) coils for this study, results are directly transferable to island seeding by other MHD instabilities creating a resonant magnetic field component at the rational surface. Experimental results for 2/1 island penetration from ASDEX Upgrade are presented e…
The neoclassical polarization current, generated when a magnetic island propagates through a tokamak plasma, is believed to influence the initial stage of the neoclassical tearing mode evolution. Understanding the strength of its contribution in the relevant plasma collision frequency regimes for future tokamaks such as ITER is crucial for the successful control and/or avoidance of the neoclassical tearing mode. A nonlinear drift kinetic theory is employed to determine the full collision frequency dependence of the neoclassical polarization current in the small island limit, comparable to the …
The effects that energetic trapped ions have on linear resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities are studied in a reduced model that captures the essential physics driving or damping the modes through variations in the magnetic shear. The drift-kinetic orbital interaction of a slowing down distribution of trapped energetic ions with a resistive MHD instability is integrated to a scalar contribution to the perturbed pressure, and entered into an asymptotic matching formalism for the resistive MHD dispersion relation. Toroidal magnetic field line curvature is included to model trapping i…

The tearing mode instability and the associated magnetic islands can lead to a degradation of tokamak plasma performance and eventually to a disruption. A crucial issue for the extension of advanced tokamak scenarios to long pulse operation is to avoid these MHD instabilities. Prevention of disruptions and limitations of adverse effect on energy confinement depend on the avoidance of formation of magnetic islands, and it depends also on the successful control of the growth modes excited by intrinsic plasma effects such as the neo-classical drive of unfavourable bootstrap current gradient at so…
In JT-60U, simultaneous excitation of n = 1 helical cores (HCs) and m/n = 2/1 Tearing Modes (TMs) was observed [T. Bando et al., Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 61 115014 (2019)]. In this paper, we have investigated the excitation mechanism of n = 1 HCs with m/n = 2/1 TMs based on the experimental observations and a simple quasi-linear MHD model. In the previous study, it was reported that a "coupling" on the phase of the MHD mode is observed between n = 1 HCs and m/n = 2/1 TMs. In this study, it is found that the coupling is observed with the mode frequency from several Hz to 6 kHz. This indicat…
The effect of a narrow sub-Alfvenic shear flow layer near the minimum q_min of the tokamak safety factor profile in a configuration with reversed central shear is analyzed. Sufficiently strong velocity shear gives rise to a broad spectrum of fast growing Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH)-like ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes with dominant mode numbers m,n ~ 10. Nonlinear simulations with finite resistivity show magnetic reconnection near ripples caused by KH-like vortices, the formation of turbulent structures, and a flattening of the flow profile. The KH modes are compared to double tearing modes (D…

The linear instability and nonlinear dynamics of collisional (resistive) and collisionless (due to electron inertia) double tearing modes (DTMs) are compared with the use of a reduced cylindrical model of a tokamak plasma. We focus on cases where two q = 2 resonant surfaces are located a small distance apart. It is found that regardless of the magnetic reconnection mechanism, resistivity or electron inertia, the fastest growing linear eigenmodes may have high poloidal mode numbers m ~ 10. The spectrum of unstable modes tends to be broader in the collisionless case. In the nonlinear regime, it …
In a tokamak the edge and the central region may become connected by helical orbits resulting from the combination of global poloidal rotation and localized radial shifts. The rotation sustained by the Stringer mechanism and the baroclinic effect are able to generate such helical orbit. This can be a contribution to the inward flow and central accumulation of high-$Z$ impurity ions.
The kinetic effects of electrons are important to long wavelength magnetohydrodynamic(MHD)instabilities and short wavelength drift-Alfvenic instabilities responsible for turbulence transport in magnetized plasmas, since the non-adiabatic electron can interact with, modify and drive the low frequency instabilities. A novel conservative split weight scheme is proposed for the electromagnetic simulation with drift kinetic electrons in tokamak plasmas, which shows great computational advantages that there is no numerical constrain of electron skin depth on the perpendicular grid size without sacri…
The effect of the perturbed ion polarization current on the stability of neoclassical tearing modes is calculated using an improved, neoclassical, four-field, drift-MHD model. The calculation involves the self-consistent determination of the pressure and scalar electric potential profiles in the vicinity of the associated magnetic island chain, which allows the chain's propagation velocity to be fixed. Two regimes are considered. First, a regime in which neoclassical ion poloidal flow damping is not strong enough to enhance the magnitude of the polarization current (relative to that found in s…
Spherical tokamaks (STs) have been shown to possess properties desirable for a fusion power plant such as achieving high plasma ? and having increased vertical stability. To understand the confinement properties that might be expected in the conceptual design for a high $β$ ST fusion reactor, a 1GW ST plasma equilibrium was analysed using local linear gyrokinetics to determine the type of micro-instabilities that arise. Kinetic ballooning modes (KBMs) and micro-tearing modes (MTMs) are found to be the dominant instabilities. The parametric dependence of these linear modes was determined and fr…
A comprehensive description of methods, suitable for solving the kinetic equation for fast ions and impurity species in tokamak plasmas using Monte Carlo approach, is presented. The described methods include Hamiltonian orbit-following in particle and guiding center phase space, test particle or guiding center solution of the kinetic equation applying stochastic differential equations in the presence of Coulomb collisions, neoclassical tearing modes and Alfvén eigenmodes as electromagnetic perturbations relevant to fast ions, together with plasma flow and atomic reactions relevant to impurity …
Non-axisymmetric stationary magnetic perturbations lead to the formation of homoclinic tangles near the divertor magnetic saddle in tokamak discharges. These tangles intersect the divertor plates in static helical structures that delimit the regions reached by open magnetic field lines reaching the plasma column and leading the charged particles to the strike surfaces by parallel transport. In this article we introduce a non-axisymmetric rotating magnetic perturbation to model the time development of the three-dimensional magnetic field of a single-null DIII-D tokamak discharge developing a ro…

A two channel oblique electron cyclotron emission (ECE) radiometer was installed on the DIII-D tokamak and interfaced to 4 gyrotrons. Oblique ECE was used to toroidally and radially localize rotating magnetic islands and so assist their electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) stabilization. In particular, after manipulations operated by the interfacing analogue circuit, the oblique ECE signals directly modulated the current drive in synch with the island rotation and in phase with the island O-point, for a more efficient stabilization. Apart from the different toroidal location, the diagnostic…
A four-field system of equations which includes the neoclassical flow damping effects and the lowest-order finite-Larmor-radius (FLR) corrections is deduced from a system of gyrofluid equations. The FLR corrections to the poloidal flow damping are calculated by solving a simplified version of the gyrokinetic equation. This system of equations is applied to the study of a chain of freely rotating magnetic islands in a tokamak, resulting from the nonlinear evolution of a resistive tearing mode, to determine the islands rotation velocity consistently with the fields radial profiles close to the r…
We calculate the stability of a multiple relaxation region MHD (MRXMHD) plasma, or stepped-Beltrami plasma, using both variational and tearing mode treatments. The configuration studied is a periodic cylinder. In the variational treatment, the problem reduces to an eigenvalue problem for the interface displacements. For the tearing mode treatment, analytic expressions for the tearing mode stability parameter $Δ'$, being the jump in the logarithm in the helical flux across the resonant surface, are found. The stability of these treatments is compared for $m=1$ displacements of an illustrative R…
The effect of magnetic perturbations (MPs) on the helical self-organization of shaped tokamak plasmas is discussed in the framework of the nonlinear 3D MHD model. Numerical simulations performed in toroidal geometry with the \textsc{pixie3d} code [L. Chacón, Phys. Plasmas {\bf 15}, 056103 (2008)] show that $n=1$ MPs significantly affect the spontaneous quasi-periodic sawtoothing activity of such plasmas. In particular, the mitigation of sawtooth oscillations is induced by $m/n=1/1$ and $2/1$ MPs. These numerical findings provide a confirmation of previous circular tokamak simulations, and are …
A mechanism for fast magnetic reconnection in collisionless plasma is studied for understanding sawtooth collapse in tokamak discharges by using a two-fluid model for cold ions and electrons. Explosive growth of the tearing mode enabled by electron inertia is analytically estimated by using an energy principle with a nonlinear displacement map. Decrease of the potential energy in the nonlinear regime (where the island width exceeds the electron skin depth) is found to be steeper than in the linear regime, resulting in accelerated reconnection. Release of potential energy by such a fluid displa…
This work addresses the question of the relation between strike-point splitting and magnetic stochasticity at the edge of a poloidally diverted tokamak in the presence of externally imposed magnetic perturbations. More specifically, ad-hoc helical current sheets are introduced in order to mimic a hypothetical screening of the external resonant magnetic perturbations by the plasma. These current sheets, which suppress magnetic islands, are found to reduce the amount of splitting expected at the target, which suggests that screening effects should be observable experimentally. Multiple screening…
In the merging-compression method of plasma start-up, two flux-ropes with parallel toroidal current are formed around in-vessel poloidal field coils, before merging to form a spherical tokamak plasma. This start-up method, used in the Mega-Ampere Spherical Tokamak (MAST), is studied as a high Lundquist number and low plasma-beta magnetic reconnection experiment. In this paper, 2D fluid simulations are presented of this merging process in order to understand the underlying physics, and better interpret the experimental data. These simulations examine the individual and combined effects of tight…
As tokamaks are designed and built with increasing levels of stored energy in the plasma, disruptions become increasingly dangerous. It has been reported that 95% of the disruptions in the Joint European Torus (JET) tokamak with the ITER-like wall are preceded by the growth of large locked islands, and these large islands are mostly produced by off-normal events other than neoclassical tearing modes. This paper discusses the use of RF current drive to stabilize large islands, focusing on nonlinear effects that appear when relatively high powers are used to stabilize large islands. An RF curren…
A new physical mechanism of formation of runaway electron (RE) beams during plasma disruptions in tokamaks is proposed. The plasma disruption is caused by a strong stochastic magnetic field formed due to nonlinearly excited low-mode number magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes. It is conjectured that the runaway electron beam is formed in the central plasma region confined inside the intact magnetic surface located between $q=1$ and the closest low--order rational magnetic surfaces [$q=5/4$ or $q=4/3$, \dots]. It results in that runaway electron beam current has a helical nature with a predominant $…
A new plasma state has been investigated [C.~Akcay, J.~Finn, R.~Nebel and D.~Barnes, Phys.~Plasmas $\textbf{24}$, 052503 (2017)], with a uniform applied axial magnetic field in a periodic cylinder of length $L=2πR$, driven by helical electrodes. The drive is single helicity, depending on $mθ+kz=mθ-nζ$, where $ζ=z/R$ and $k=-n/R$. For strong $(m,n)=(1,1)$ drive the state was found to have a strong axial mean current density, with a mean-field safety factor $q_0(r)$ just above the pitch of the electrodes $m/n=1$ in the interior. This state has possible applications to DC electrical transformers …
