A new class of exact solutions of hydrodynamic equations for an incompressible fluid (gas) at the presence of a bulk sink and uprising vertical flows of matter is considered. The acceleration of the rotation velocity of classical non-stationary vortices is conditioned by the joint action of the convective and Coriolis hydrodynamic forces (accelerations), which appear due to the converging radial flows of the matter in the region of a bulk sink. It is shown that there exist velocity profiles that nullify viscous terms in the Navier-Stokes equations and represent a vortex structure with a "rigid-body" rotation of its core and converging radial flows.
The concept of non-stationary vortices in open systems is applied to description of origination of power atmospheric vortices (whirlwinds, tornados, and typhoons). In the classical hydrodynamics a favorable condition for the origination and existence of such vortices is the exact nullification of the terms, which describe kinematic viscosity of an incompressible fluid. Such flows have the minimal rate of energy dissipation that corresponds to the "minimum entropy production principle", and therefore may relatively easily appear in favorable natural conditions.
We study the interplay of hydrodynamic mesoscale structures and the growth of plankton in the wake of an island, and its interaction with a coastal upwelling. Our focus is on a mechanism for the emergence of localized plankton blooms in vortices. Using a coupled system of a kinematic flow mimicking the mesoscale structures behind the island and a simple three component model for the marine ecosystem, we show that the long residence times of nutrients and plankton in the vicinity of the island and the confinement of plankton within vortices are key factors for the appearance of localized plankt…
The motion of noncircular two-dimensional vortices is shown to depend on a form of coupling between vortex ellipticity and the gradient of fluid density. The approach is based on the perspective that an elliptic vortex can be described as the projection of a virtual construct, a circular vortex with a symmetry axis that is tilted with respect to the direction of propagation. The resulting kinetic equation offers insights into how tilt and vortex velocity coevolve in few-body nonequilibrium settings such as vortex pair nucleation and annihilation. The model is developed and applied in associati…
We develop a coarse-grained description of the point-vortex model, finding that a large number of planar vortices and antivortices behave as an inviscid non-Eulerian fluid at large scales. The emergent binary vortex fluid is subject to anomalous stresses absent from Euler's equation, caused by the singular nature of quantum vortices. The binary vortex fluid is compressible, and has an asymmetric Cauchy stress tensor allowing orbital angular momentum exchange with the vorticity and vortex density. An analytic solution for vortex shear flow driven by anomalous stresses is in excellent agreement …
Several dynamical stages of the Marangoni convection of an evaporating sessile drop are obtained. We jointly take into account the hydrodynamics of an evaporating sessile drop, effects of the thermal conduction in the drop and the diffusion of vapor in air. The stages are characterized by different number of vortices in the drop and the spatial location of vortices. During the early stage the array of vortices arises near a surface of the drop and induces a non-monotonic spatial distribution of the temperature over the drop surface. The number of near-surface vortices in the drop is controlled…
It is shown for the first time that only an antipodal vortex pair (APV) is the elementary singular vortex object on the sphere compatible with the hydrodynamic equations. The exact weak solution of the absolute vorticity equation on the rotating sphere is obtained in the form of Hamiltonian dynamic system for interacting APVs. This is the first model describing interaction of Barrett vortices corresponding to atmospheric centers of action (ACA). In particular, new steady-state conditions for N=2 are obtained. These analytical conditions are used for the analysis of coupled cyclone-anticyclone …
We get point vortices dynamics equations on a rotating sphere surface directly from the hydrodynamic equations as representing their weak exact solution contrary to the conventional case of the use of a kinematic relationship between a given singular vortex field and velocity field. It is first time that the effect of a sphere rotation on the vortices interaction is accounted for in exact form. We show that only the stream function of a vortex pair of antipodal vortices (APV), and only it satisfies the original three-dimensional hydrodynamics equations on a sphere. We prove that only APV pair …
Turbulent flows of incompressible liquid in two dimensions are comprised of dense systems of vortices. Such system of vortices can be treated as a fluid and itself could be described in terms of hydrodynamics. We develop the hydrodynamics of the vortex fluid. This hydrodynamics captures characteristics of fluid flows averaged over fast circulations in the inter-vortex space. The hydrodynamics of the vortex fluid features the anomalous stress absent in Euler's hydrodynamics. The anomalous stress yields a number of interesting effects. Some of them are: a deflection of stream lines, a correction…
It is shown that the hydrodynamics equations for a thin spherical liquid layer are satisfied by the stream function of a pair of antipodal vortices-APV, in contrast to the stream function of a single point vortex on a sphere with a background of a uniform opposite sign vorticity. A simple zero solution of the equation of the absolute vorticity conservation is used for bypassing well-known nonlinear problem of a point vortices interaction with regular vorticity field and an exact solution for APVs dynamics problem on a rotating sphere is obtained. Due to this a new stable stationary solution fo…
This fluid dynamics video provides sample experimental results focusing on the interactions of shear layer vortices with the trailing corner in a 2D open cavity shear layer. These interactions were investigated experimentally in a water tunnel at a Reynolds number of 40,000. Time-resolved particle image velocimetry (PIV) with an image sampling rate of 4500 frames per second was used to simultaneously measure the instantaneous velocity, material acceleration and pressure distributions. The latter was calculated by integrating the spatial distribution of in-plane components of the material accel…
Water droplets coalesce into larger ones in atmospheric clouds to form rain. But droplets on collision courses do not always coalesce due to the cushioning effects of the air between them. The extent to which these so-called hydrodynamic interactions reduce coalescence rates is embodied in the collision efficiency, which is often small and is not generally known. In order to characterize the mechanisms that determine the collision efficiency, we exploited new time-resolved three-dimensional droplet tracking techniques to measure the positions of cloud droplet pairs settling through quiescent a…
Pinnipeds like seals and sea lions use their whiskers in hunting their prey in dark and turbid conditions. There is no theoretical model or a hypothesis to explain the interaction of whiskers with hydrodynamic fish trails. The present work provides insight into the mechanism behind the Strouhal frequency identification from a Von-Karman vortex street behind bluff bodies, similar to the inverted hydrodynamic fish trail. Flow over 3D printed sea lion head with integrated whiskers of similar geometrical and material properties was investigated when being exposed to vortex streets behind cylindric…
This paper is devoted to a statistical analysis of the fluctuations of velocity and acceleration produced by a random distribution of point vortices in two-dimensional turbulence. We show that the velocity probability density function (p.d.f.) behaves in a manner which is intermediate between Gaussian and Lévy laws while the distribution of accelerations is governed by a Cauchy law. Our study accounts properly for a spectrum of circulations among the vortices. In the case of real vortices (with a finite core) we show analytically that the distribution of accelerations makes a smooth transition…
From a new anti-parallel initial condition using long vortices, three-dimensional turbulence forms after two reconnection steps and the formation of at least one vortex ring. The long domain is needed in order to accommodate the multiple reconnections, which enhance vortex stretching rates and the generation of small-scale vortex structures within the vortex rings. In addition to making the initial vortices very long, new features introduced with this initial condition are an initial profile less likely to shed vortex sheets and an improved method for mapping the direction of the vorticity ont…
Our recent study has shown that the representative phenomena of liquid helium-4 rotating in a cylinder could be simulated by solving the two-fluid model using smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) after reformulating the viscosity to conserve the rotational angular momentum. Specifically, the emergence of multiple parallel vortices and their rigid-body rotations were observed in our previous SPH simulations. The reported scheme is based on a classical approximation that assumes the fluid forces of both components and their interactions, with the expectation of functioning as a coarse-grained m…
We develop a kinetic theory for point vortices in two-dimensional hydrodynamics. Using standard projection operator technics, we derive a Fokker-Planck equation describing the relaxation of a ``test'' vortex in a bath of ``field'' vortices at statistical equilibrium. The relaxation is due to the combined effect of a diffusion and a drift. The drift is shown to be responsible for the organization of point vortices at negative temperatures. A description that goes beyond the thermal bath approximation is attempted. A new kinetic equation is obtained which respects all conservation laws of the po…
The importance of contact discontinuities in 2D isothermal flows has rarely been discussed, since most Riemann solvers are derived for 1D Euler equations. We present a new contact resolving approximate Riemann solver for the isothermal Euler equations and show its performance for several one- and two-dimensional test problems. The new solver extends the well-known HLL solver, while retaining its computational simplicity. The significant gain in resolution of vortices is displayed by a simulation of the Kármán vortex street. We discuss the loss of Galilean invariance and its implications for th…
Precession has been proposed as an alternative power source for planetary dynamos. Previous hydrodynamic simulations suggested that precession can generate very complex flows in planetary liquid cores [Y. Lin, P. Marti, and J. Noir, "Shear-driven parametric instability in a precessing sphere," Physics of Fluids 27, 046601 (2015)]. In the present study, we numerically investigate the magnetohydrodynamics of a precessing sphere. We demonstrate precession driven dynamos in different flow regimes, from laminar to turbulent flows. In particular, we highlight the magnetic field generation by large s…
When a fluid system is subject to strong rotation, centrifugal fluid motion is expected, i.e., denser (lighter) fluid moves outward (inward) from (toward) the axis of rotation. Here we demonstrate, both experimentally and numerically, the existence of an unexpected outward motion of warm and lighter vortices in rotating turbulent convection. This anomalous vortex motion occurs under rapid rotations when the centrifugal buoyancy is sufficiently strong to induce a symmetry-breaking in the vorticity field, i.e., the vorticity of the cold anticyclones overrides that of the warm cyclones. We show t…
Rapid new developments have occurred in superfluid hydrodynamics since the discovery of a host of unusual phenomena which arise from the diverse structure and dynamics of quantized vortices in 3He superfluids. These have been studied in rotating flow with NMR measurements which at best provide an accurate mapping of the different types of topological defects in the superfluid order parameter field. Four observations are reviewed here: (1) the interplay of different vortex structures at the first order interface between the two major superfluid 3He phases, 3He-A and 3He-B; (2) the shear flow in…
Lagrangian acceleration statistics in a fully developed turbulent channel flow at $Re_τ= 1440$ are investigated, based on tracer particle tracking in experiments and direct numerical simulations. The evolution with wall distance of the Lagrangian velocity and acceleration time scales is analyzed. Dependency between acceleration components in the near-wall region is described using cross-correlations and joint probability density functions. The strong streamwise coherent vortices typical of wall-bounded turbulent flows are shown to have a significant impact on the dynamics. This results in a st…
The collective motion of microswimmers in suspensions induce patterns of vortices on scales that are much larger than the characteristic size of a microswimmer, attaining a state called bacterial turbulence. Hydrodynamic turbulence acts on even larger scales and is dominated by inertial transport of energy. Using an established modification of the Navier-Stokes equation that accounts for the small scale forcing of hydrodynamic flow by microswimmers, we study the properties of a dense supensions of microswimmers in two dimensions, where the conservation of enstrophy can drive an inverse cascade…
We study the hydrodynamics of spherical spinners suspended in a Newtonian fluid at inertial regime. We observe a spontaneous condensation of the spinners into particle rich regions, at low but finite particle Reynolds numbers and volume fractions. The particle clusters have a coherent internal dynamics. The spinners form colloidal vortices surrounded by the fluid depleted of the particles. The formation of vortices is observed both in periodic simulation box and when the spinners are confined between two flat walls. The stabilisation of the observed states relies only on hydrodynamic interacti…
Recently, much interest has emerged in fluid-like electric charge transport in various solid-state systems. The hydrodynamic behavior of the electronic fluid reveals itself as a decrease of the electrical resistance with increasing temperature (the Gurzhi effect) in narrow conducting channels, polynomial scaling of the resistance as a function of the channel width, substantial violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law supported by the emergence of the Poiseuille flow. Similarly to whirlpools in flowing water, the viscous electronic flow generates vortices, resulting in abnormal sign-changing electr…
Experiments in the early 1980s have shown that a compact bundle of quantum vortex rings in superfluid helium remains coherent and travels a significant distance compared to its size. This is surprising because a single vortex ring, under the effect of friction with the background of thermal excitations (the so-called normal fluid), would quickly lose energy and decay. The observation of these long-lived vortex structures has remained an unsettled question since their experimental detection. In this work, by taking into account the fully coupled dynamics of superfluid vortices and the normal fl…
Five-minutes oscillations is one of the basic properties of solar convection. Observations show mixture of a large number of acoustic wave fronts propagating from their sources. We investigate the process of acoustic waves excitation from the point of view of individual events, by using realistic 3D radiative hydrodynamic simulation of the quiet Sun. The results show that the excitation events are related to dynamics vortex tubes (or swirls) in the intergranular lanes. These whirlpool-like flows are characterized by very strong horizontal velocities (7 - 11 km/s) and downflows (~ 7 km/s), and …
