We have demonstrated Zeeman slowing and capture of neutral Ra-225 and Ra-226 atoms in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). The intercombination transition 1S0-3P1 is the only quasi-cycling transition in radium and was used for laser-cooling and trapping. Repumping along the 3D1-1P1 transition extended the lifetime of the trap from milliseconds to seconds. Room-temperature blackbody radiation was demonstrated to provide repumping from the metastable 3P0 level. We measured the isotope shift and hyperfine splittings on the 3D1-1P1 transition with the laser-cooled atoms, and set a limit on the lifetime of the 3D1 level based on the measured blackbody repumping rate. Laser-cooled and trapped radium is an attractive system for studying fundamental symmetries.
Radiative decay from the excited $^1P_1$ state to metastable $^3P_2$ and $^3P_0$ states is expected to limit attainable trapped atomic population in a magneto-optic trap of ytterbium (Yb) atoms. In experiments we have carried out with optical repumping of $^3P_{0,2}$ states to $^3P_1$, we observe enhancement of trapped atoms yield in the excited $^1P_1$ state. The individual decay rate to each metastable state is measured and the results show an excellent agreement with the theoretical values.
We demonstrated a frequency offset locking between two laser sources using a waveguide-type electro-optic modulator (EOM) with 10th-order sidebands for magneto-optical trapping of Fr atoms. The frequency locking error signal was successfully obtained by performing delayed self-homodyne detection of the beat signal between the repumping frequency and the 10th-order sideband component of the trapping light. Sweeping the trapping-light and repumping-light frequencies with keeping its frequency difference of 46 GHz was confirmed over 1 GHz by monitoring the Doppler absorption profile of I2. This t…
We investigate the limiting factors in the standard implementation of the Ca magneto-optical trap. We find that intercombination transitions from the 4s5p 1P1 state used to repump electronic population from the 3d4s 1D2 state severely reduce the trap lifetime. We explore seven alternative repumping schemes theoretically and investigate five of them experimentally. We find all five of these schemes yield a significant increase in trap lifetime and consequently improve the number of atoms and peak atom density by as much as ~20x and ~6x, respectively. One of these transitions, at 453 nm, is show…
We realize an experimental facility for cooling and trapping strontium (Sr) atoms and measure the Landé g factor of $^{3}$D$_{1}$ of $^{88}$Sr. Thanks to a novel repumping scheme with the $^{3}$P$_{2}$$\rightarrow$$^{3}$S$_{1}$ and $^{3}$P$_{0}$$\rightarrow$$^{3}$D$_{1}$ combination and the permanent magnets based self-assembled Zeeman slower, the peak atom number in the continuously repumped blue MOT is enhanced by a factor of 15 with respect to the non-repumping case, and reaches $\sim$1 billion. Furthermore, using the resolved-sideband Zeeman spectroscopy, the Landé g factor of $^{3}$D$_{1}…
Many ion species commonly used for laser-cooled ion trapping studies have a low-lying metastable 2D3/2 state that can become populated due to spontaneous emission from the 2P1/2 excited state. This requires a repumper laser to maintain the ion in the Doppler cooling cycle. Typically the 2D3/2 state, or some of its hyperfine components if the ion has nuclear spin, has a higher multiplicity than the upper state of the repumping transition. This can lead to dark states, which have to be destabilized by an external magnetic field or by modulating the polarization of the repumper laser. We propose …
Stringent conditions on the phase relation of multiple photons are a prerequisite for novel protocols of high-resolution coherent spectroscopy. In a recent experiment we have implemented an interrogation process of a Ca$^+$-ion cloud based on three-photon coherent population trapping, with the potential to serve as a frequency reference in the THz-range. This high-resolution interrogation has been made possible by phase-locking both laser sources for cooling and repumping of the trapped ions to a clock laser at 729~nm by means of an optical frequency comb. The clock laser, a titanium-sapphire …
We present the first extended-cavity diode laser in Littrow configuration operating in the cyan wavelength range around 497 nm. The gallium-nitride based diode laser features a free-space output with up to 60 mW, operates in a single frequency mode, is tunable over a range of more than 8 nm and has a Lorentzian linewidth of less than 90 kHz. A detailed characterization of the tuning capabilities of the diode laser and its emission spectrum is provided. This compact, simple and low cost laser source replaces more complex systems based on frequency doubling and therefore simplifies the developme…
We report an experimental study of peak and phase-space density of a two-stage magneto-optical trap (MOT) of 6-Li atoms, which exploits the narrower $2S_{1/2}\rightarrow 3P_{3/2}$ ultra-violet (UV) transition at 323 nm following trapping and cooling on the more common D2 transition at 671 nm. The UV MOT is loaded from a red MOT and is compressed to give a high phase-space density up to $3\times 10^{-4}$. Temperatures as low as 33 $μ$K are achieved on the UV transition. We study the density limiting factors and in particular find a value for the light-assisted collisional loss coefficient of $1…
For laser cooling considerations, we have theoretically investigated the electronic, rovibrational and hypefine structures of BaF molecule. The highly diagonal Franck-Condon factors and the branching ratios for all possible transitions within the lowest-lying four electronic states have also been calculated. Meanwhile, the mixing between metastable A'2Δ and A2Π states and further the lifetime of the Δ state have been estimated since the loss procedure via Δ state would like fatally destroy the main quasi-cycling Σ-Π transition for cooling and trapping. The resultant hyperfine splittings of eac…
Optical pumping by blackbody radiation is a feature shared by all polar molecules and fundamentally limits the time that these molecules can be kept in a single quantum state in a trap. To demonstrate and quantify this, we have monitored the optical pumping of electrostatically trapped OH and OD radicals by room-temperature blackbody radiation. Transfer of these molecules to rotationally excited states by blackbody radiation at 295 K limits the $1/e$ trapping time for OH and OD in the $X^{2}Π_{3/2},v''=0,J''=3/2(f)$ state to 2.8 s and 7.1 s, respectively.
We present the design of a compact optical clock based on the $^2S_{1/2} \rightarrow ^2D_{3/2}$ 435.5 nm transition in $^{171}$Yb$^+$. The ion trap will be based on a micro-fabricated circuit, with surface electrodes generating a trapping potential to localize a single Yb ion a few hundred $μ$m from the electrodes. We present our trap design as well as simulations of the resulting trapping pseudo-potential. We also present a compact, multi-channel wavelength meter that will permit the frequency stabilization of the cooling, repumping and clear-out lasers at 369.5 nm, 935.2 nm and 638.6 nm need…
Metastable (1s)(2s) $^3{\rm S}_1$ helium atoms produced in a supersonic beam were excited to Rydberg-Stark states (with $n$ in the $27-30$ range) in a cryogenic environment and subsequently decelerated by, and trapped above, a surface-electrode decelerator. In the trapping experiments, the Rydberg atoms were brought to rest in 75~$μ$s and over a distance of 33~mm and kept stationary for times $t_{\mathrm{trap}}$ in the $0-525$~$μ$s range, before being re-accelerated for detection by pulsed field ionization. The use of a home-built valve producing short gas pulses with a duration of about 20~$μ…
We present a magneto-optical trap (MOT) design based on millimeter ball lenses, contained within a metal cube of 0.75$^{\prime \prime}$ side length. We present evidence of trapping approximately $4.2\times 10^5$ of $^{85}$Rb atoms with a number density of $3.2\times 10^9$ atoms/cm$^{3}$ and a loading time of 1.3 s. Measurement and a kinetic laser-cooling model are used to characterize the atom trap design. The design provides several advantages over other types of MOTs: the laser power requirement is low, the small lens and cube sizes allow for miniaturization of MOT applications, and the lack…
For the first time, we experimentally determine the infrared magic wavelength for the $^{40}$Ca$^{+}$ $4s\, ^{2}\!S_{1/2} \rightarrow 3d\,^{2}\!D_{5/2}$ electric quadrupole transition by observation of the light shift canceling in $^{40}$Ca$^{+}$ optical clock. A "magic" magnetic field direction is chosen to make the magic wavelength insensitive to both the linear polarization purity and the polarization direction of the laser. The determined magic wavelength for this transition is 1056.37(9)~nm, which is not only in good agreement with theoretical predictions but also more precise by a factor…
In this paper, we present a technique for magneto-optical cooling and trapping of neutral atoms using a single laser. The alternating-frequency magneto-optical trap (AF-MOT) uses an agile light source that sequentially switches between cooling and repumping transition frequencies by tuning the injection current of the laser diode. We report on the experimental demonstration of such a system for 87Rb and 85Rb based on a micro-integrated extended cavity diode laser (ECDL) performing laser frequency jumps of up to 6.6 GHz with a tuning time in the microsecond regime and a repetition rate of up to…
We present a systematic study on the Raman gray molasses cooling (RGMC) of cesium atoms on the $D_2$ transition. Due to the large splitting in the excited hyperfine transitions of cesium $D_2$ line, it is relatively simple to implement the RGMC with suitable frequency control on the trapping and repumping lasers of the magneto-optical trap (MOT). We have achieved an atom temperature of 1.7$\pm$0.2 $μ$K after the RGMC with $3.2\times 10^8$ atoms. The phase space density is $1.43\times 10^{-4}$. Compared to the condition with a bare MOT or the MOT with a standard polarization gradient cooling, t…
We have measured the lifetime of the 5s5p ^3P_2 metastable state of strontium atoms by magneto-optically trapping the decayed atoms to the ground state, which allowed sensitive detection of the rare decay events. We found that the blackbody radiation-induced decay was the dominant decay channel for the state at T = 300 K. The lifetime was determined to be 500^{+280}_{-130} s in the limit of zero temperature.
We have developed an optical lattice clock that can operate in dual modes: a strontium (Sr) clock mode and an ytterbium (Yb) clock mode. Dual-mode operation of the Sr-Yb optical lattice clock is achieved by alternately cooling and trapping $^{87}$Sr and $^{171}$Yb atoms inside the vacuum chamber of the clock. Optical lattices for Sr and Yb atoms were arranged with horizontal and vertical configurations, respectively, resulting in a small distance of the order of 100 $μ$m between the trapped Sr and Yb atoms. The $^{1}$S$_{0}$-$^{3}$P$_{0}$ clock transitions in the trapped atoms were interrogate…
