We present here the results of calculations of photoelectrons' angular anisotropy and spin-polarization parameters for a number of semi-filled shell atoms. We consider ionization of outer or in some cases next to the outer electrons in a number of elements from I, V, and VI groups of the Periodic Table. All calculations are performed with account of multi-electron correlations in the frame of the Spin Polarized version of the Random Phase Approximation with Exchange - SP RPAE. We consider the dipole angular distribution and spin polarization of photoelectrons from semi-filled subshells and from closed shells that are neighbors to the semi-filled shells. We have considered also angular anisotropy and spin-polarization of photoelectrons from some excited atoms that are formed by spin-flip of one of the outer electrons. To check the accuracy and consistency of the applied SP RPAE approach and to see the role of the nuclear charge variation only, we have calculated the dipole angular anisotropy and spin-polarization parameters of 3p - electrons in K and compare them to Ar and K+ that have the same configuration. Entirely, we have calculated the angular anisotropy and spin-polarization parameters for following subshells of atoms N (2p), P (3p), Ar (3p), K+(3p), K(3p), Cr(3p, 3d), Cr*(3d), Mn(3p, 3d), As(3d, 4p), Mo(4p, 4d), Mo*(4d), Tc(4p, 4d), Sb(4d, 5p), Eu(4f). The peculiarities of obtained parameters as function of photon frequencies are discussed, as well as some specific features of considered semi-filled shell objects.
The probability that photoionization of the caged atom in an endohedral system is accompanied by excitation of the fullerene shell is shown to be close to unity in broad intervals of the photoelectron energies. The result is obtained by summation of the perturbative series for the interaction between the photoelectron and the fullerene shell. This result means that the interaction between the photoelectron ejected from the cage atom and the fullerene shell cannot be described by a static potential, since inelastic processes become decisively important.
Chiral transition-metal complexes are of interest in many fields ranging from asymmetric catalysis and molecular materials science to optoelectronic applications or fundamental physics including parity violation effects. We present here a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of gas-phase valence-shell photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) on the challenging open-shell ruthenium(iii)-tris-(acetylacetonato) complex, Ru(acac)$_3$. Enantiomerically pure $Δ$- or $Λ$-Ru(acac)$_3$, characterized by electronic circular dichroism (ECD), were vaporized and adiabatically expanded to prod…
We present the results of calculations of outer shell non-dipole angular anisotropy parameters for semi-filled shell atoms in the Hartree-Fock (HF) one-electron approximation and with account of inter-electron correlations in the frame of the Spin Polarized Random Phase Approximation with Exchange (SP RPAE). We demonstrate for the first time that this characteristic of photoionization process is essentially sensitive to the fact whether the photoelectron has the same or opposite spin orientation to that of the semi-filled shell.
Photoelectron angular distributions following the non-resonant two-photon K-shell ionization of neutral atoms are studied theoretically. Using the independent particle approximation and relativistic second-order perturbation theory, the contributions of screening and relativistic effects to the photoelectron angular distribution are evaluated. A simple nonrelativistic expression is presented for the angle-differential cross section in dipole approximation for two-photon ionization by elliptically polarized photons, and its limitations are analyzed numerically. Moreover, we show that screening …
We discuss the complicated resonance structure of the endohedral atom photoionization cross section. Very strong enhancement and interference patterns in the photoionization cross-section of the valent and subvalent subshells of noble gas endohedral atoms A@C60 are demonstrated. It is shown also that the atomic Giant resonance can be either completely destroyed or remains almost untouched depending on the velocity of photoelectrons that are emitted in the resonance's decay process. These effects are results of dynamic modification of the incoming beam of radiation due to polarization of the fu…
We theoretically study the photoelectron angular distributions (PADs) from two-color two-photon near-threshold ionization of hydrogen and noble gas (He, Ne, and Ar) atoms by a combined action of femtosecond extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and near-infrared (IR) laser pulses. Using the second-order time-dependent perturbation theory, we clarify how the two-photon ionization process depends on EUV-IR pulse delay and how it is connected to the interplay between resonant and nonresonant ionization paths. Furthermore, by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, we calculate the anisotropy paramet…
Angular momentum changing collisions can be suppressed in atoms whose valence electrons are submerged beneath filled shells of higher principle quantum number. To determine whether spin-exchange collisions are suppressed in these "submerged shell" atoms, we measured spin-exchange collisions of six hyperfine states of Mn at temperatures below 1 K. Although the 3d valence electrons in Mn are submerged beneath a filled 4s orbital, we find that the spin exchange rate coefficients are similar to those of Na and H (which are non-submerged shell atoms).
The combination of photoelectron spectroscopy and ultrafast light sources is on track to set new standards for detailed interrogation of dynamics and reactivity of molecules. A crucial prerequisite for further progress is the ability to not only detect the electron kinetic energy, as done in traditional photoelectron spectroscopy, but also the photoelectron angular distributions (PADs) in the molecular frame. Here carbonylsulfide (OCS) and benzonitrile molecules, fixed in space by combined laser and electrostatic fields, are ionized with intense, circularly polarized, 30 femtosecond laser puls…
We analyze the time delay between emission of photoelectrons from the outer valence $ns$ and $np$ sub-shells in noble gas atoms following absorption of an attosecond XUV pulse. By solving the time dependent Schrödinger equation and carefully examining the time evolution of the photoelectron wave packet, we establish the apparent "time zero" when the photoelectron leaves the atom. Various processes such as elastic scattering of the photoelectron on the parent ion and many-electron correlation affect the quantum phase of the dipole transition matrix element, the energy dependence of which define…
Single ionization of noble gas atoms by linearly polarized synchrotron radiation has been studied by employing angle- and energy-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The measurements were carried out in the plane defined by the momentum and polarization vectors of the photon. Parameters describing the left-right asymmetry (LRA) (relative to the photon propagation direction) of the photoelectron angular distribution were determined experimentally for the $s$-shells of He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe atoms and H$_2$ molecules and for the $p$-shells of Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe atoms. The values of the left-right …
The photoionization of a two-shell endohedral A@CN1@CN2 is considered. Formulas are presented for cross-sections and angular anisotropy parameters, both dipole and non-dipole. The effect of the fullerenes shell upon photoelectron from atom A is taken into account substituting the action of the fullerene by two zero-thickness "bubble potential". The fullerenes shells polarization is included assuming that the radius of the outer shell R2 is much bigger than the inner R1 and both much exceeds the atomic radius r. This permits to express the effect via CN1,N2 polarizabilities, which are connected…
We demonstrate strong interference patterns in the photoionization cross-section of the subvalent subshells of noble gas (NG) endohedral atoms NG@F. This interference is a result of common action of three factors: the effect of neighboring atomic subshells, reflection of photoelectron waves by the fullerene F shell and resonance modification of the incoming photon beam by the complex effect under the action of the F electrons. We have considered the outer ns-subshells for Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe noble gas atoms. The polarization of the fullerene shell is expressed via the F total photoabsorption cro…
In this Letter, we investigate the non-dipole effects in time delay of photoelectrons emitted by multi-electron atoms, negative ions, and respective endohedrals. We present the necessary general formulas in the frame of the random phase approximation with exchange (RPAE) applied to atoms, negative ions, and properly adjusted to endohedrals. We concentrate on low photon energy region, where non-dipole effects are very small in the cross-sections but become observable in angular distributions. We not only derive the formulas for non-dipole effects in time delay, but perform corresponding numeric…
We demonstrate the prominent modification of the outer shell photoionization cross-section in noble gas (NG) endohedral atoms NG@F under the action of the fullerene F electron shell. This shell leads to two important effects, namely to strong enhancement of the cross-section due to fullerenes shell polarization under the action of the incoming electromagnetic wave and to prominent oscillation of this cross-section due to the reflection of the photoelectron from NG by the F shell. All but He noble gas atoms are considered. The polarization of the fullerene shell is expressed via the total photo…
We show that the combination of two achiral components - atomic or molecular target plus a circularly polarized photon - can yield chirally structured photoelectron angular distributions. For photoionization of CO, the angular distribution of carbon K-shell photoelectrons is chiral when the molecular axis is neither perpendicular nor (anti-)parallel to the light propagation axis. In photo-double-ionization of He, the distribution of one electron is chiral, if the other electron is oriented like the molecular axis in the former case and if the electrons are distinguishable by their energy. In b…
We study effective three-particle interactions between valence electrons, which are induced by the core polarization. Such interactions are enhanced when valence orbitals have strong overlap with the outermost core shell, in particular for the systems with partially filled f-shell. We find that in certain cases the three-particle contributions are large, affecting the order of energy levels, and need to be included in high-precision calculations.
A detailed theoretical analysis of the 1s photoionization of neon is presented. It is found that the most significant many-electron correlation in computing photoionization of inner shells is the rearrangement of the outer shells caused by the inner vacancy. Further noticeable effects are: (i) the polarization of the ion core by the outgoing photoelectron and (ii) the coherent effect of double excitation/ionization. The core polarization increases the photoionization cross section by about 10% at the 1s threshold, and the coherent excitation results in further increases by about 5%. Incoherent…
It is demonstrated that in photoabsorption by endohedral atoms some atomic Giant resonances are almost completely destroyed while the others are totally preserved due to different action on it of the fullerenes shell. As the first example we discuss the 4d10 Giant resonance in Xe@C60 whereas as the second serves the Giant autoionization resonance in Eu@C60. The qualitative difference comes from the fact that photoelectrons from the 4d Giant resonance has small energies (tens of eV) and are strongly reflected by the C60 fullerenes shell. As to the Eu@C60, Giant autoionization leads to fast phot…
We have measured the molecular frame angular distributions of photoelectrons emitted from the Carbon K shell of fixed-in-space CO molecules for the case of simultaneous excitation of the remaining molecular ion. Normal and conjugate shake up states are observed. Photo electrons belonging to normal Σ-satellite lines show an angular distribution resembling that observed for the main photoline at the same electron energy. Surprisingly a similar shape is found for conjugate shake up states with Π-symmetry. In our data we identify shake rather than electron scattering (PEVE) as the mechanism produc…
It is demonstrated in this Letter that the effect of the fullerene shell upon atomic Giant resonance decisively depends upon energy of photoelectrons, by which the resonance decay. According to the prediction in [1], the Giant resonance in Xe is strongly modified in the endohedral Xe@C60 being transformed from a single broad and powerful maximum in Xe into four quite narrow but with almost the same total oscillator strength. On the contrary, the 4d Giant resonances in ions Ce3+ (the electronic structure that Ce has, when stuffed into fullerene), in Ce4+, and Eu are considered. In none of them …
Composite fermions (CFs) of the fractional quantum Hall effect are described as spherical products of electron and vortex spinors, built from underlying L=1/2 ladder operators aligned so that the spinor angular momenta Le and Lv are maximal. We identify the CF's quantum numbers as the angular momentum L in (L_e L_v)L, its magnetic projection m_L, the electron number N, with L_v={N-1)/2, and magnetic ν-spin, m_ν=L_e-L_v. Translationally invariant FQHE states are formed by filling p subshells with their respective CFs, in order of ascending L for fixed L_e and L_v, beginning with the lowest allo…
Focused laser fields with textured polarization on a sub-wavelength scale allow extracting information on electronic processes which are not directly accessible by homogeneous fields. Here, we consider photoionization in radially and azimuthally polarized laser fields and show that, due to the local polarizations of the transversal and the longitudinal laser electric field components, the detected photoelectron spectra depend on the atom position from which the electron originates. The calculation results reported here show the angular dependence of the photoionization amplitude, the quantum p…
Within the framework of a model representing the potential of a graphene sheet U(z) as an electro-neutral layer formed by smeared carbon atoms, the effect of this potential on spectral characteristics of atoms adsorbed on a graphene sheet has been studied. Since the distance between the adsorbed atom nucleus and sheet surface significantly exceeds the radii of inner atomic shells the potential U(z) makes influence on the continuum wave functions only. Their behavior in the upper semi-space (z>0) and in the lower one (z<0) where the adsorbed atom is located is defined by a jump of the logarithm…
We demonstrate rather interesting manifestations of co-existence of resonance features in characteristics of the photoionization of 3d-electrons in Xe, Cs and Ba endohedral atoms. It is shown that for all of the considered atoms the reflection by the fullerene shell of photoelectrons produced by the 3d subshell photoionization affects greatly partial photoionization cross-sections of 3d5/2 and 3d3/2 levels and respective angular anisotropy parameters, both dipole and non-dipole adding to all of them additional maximums and minimums. The results obtained demonstrate distinctive differences betw…
