Quadrate hole array is explored to study the influence of unsymmetrical periodicity on extraordinary optical transmission through periodic arrays of subwavelength holes. It is found that the transmission efficiency of light and the ratio between transmission efficiencies of horizontal and vertical polarized light can be continuously tuned by rotating the quadrate hole array. We can calculate out the transmission spectra (including the heights and locations of peaks) for any rotation angle $θ$ with a simple theoretical model.
Extraordinary transmission through subwavelength metallic apertures has been extensively studied and demonstrated. At resonance, the coupling between surface plasmons on both surfaces of the metallic film tunnels the photon from the one side to the other through the subwavelength aperture with small transmission efficiency based on the metals dielectric parameters and aperture geometrical dimensions. Here, we report a completely different form of extraordinary transmission, where the two subwavelength complementary apertures when coupled with an optical cavity induce about 100% extraordinary t…
We present an intuitive analytical model for extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) through corrugated metallic films. In the framework of this model, EOT emerges from standing wave resonances of the different diffraction orders, and is an inherent property of periodic structures, which does not require specific polarization dependent properties such as surface plasmons. The model correctly predicts the conditions for the EOT resonances in various geometrical configurations, in both TE and TM polarizations, and in the subwavelength and non-subwavelength spectral regimes, using the same underl…
The enhanced light transmission through an array of subwavelength holes surrounded by Bragg mirrors is studied, showing that the mirrors act to confine the surface plasmons associated with the Extraordinary Optical Transmission effect, forming a surface resonant cavity. The overall effect is increased light transmission intensity by more than a factor of three beyond the already enhanced transmission, independent of whether the Bragg mirrors are on the input or the output side of the incident light. The geometry of the Bragg mirror structures controls the enhancement, and can even reduce the t…
We describe the electronic control of extraordinary terahertz transmission through subwavelength metal hole arrays fabricated on doped semiconductor substrates. The hybrid metal-semiconductor forms a Schottky diode structure, where the active depletion region modifies the substrate conductivity in real-time by applying an external voltage bias. This enables effective control of the resonance enhanced terahertz transmission. Our proof of principle device achieves an intensity modulation depth of 52% by changing the voltage bias between 0 and 16 volts. Further optimization may result in improvem…
We present plasmonic Bragg reflectors for increasing the extraordinary optical transmission through periodic arrays of subwavelength apertures in a metal film. The increase in transmission arises by preventing loss at the edges of the array. The plasmonic Bragg reflectors have periodicity of half the usual array's periodicity. Nano-hole arrays flanked thus by reflectors exchibited double the transmission as compared to the arrays without reflectors. These structures may also be used to isolate devices in plasmonic integrated circuits.
Influence of hole shape on extraordinary optical transmission was investigated using hole arrays consisting of rectangular holes with different aspect ratio. It was found that the transmission could be tuned continuously by rotating the hole array. Further more, a phase was generated in this process, and linear polarization states could be changed to elliptical polarization states. This phase was correlated with the aspect ratio of the holes. An intuitional model was presented to explain these results.
We show that, a metasurface composed of subwavelength metallic slit array embedded in an asymmetric environment can exhibit either extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) or extraordinary optical diffraction (EOD). By employing an analytical model expansion method and the diffraction order chart in k-vector space, we found that the resonance decaying pathway of the local slit cavity mode can be tuned to either 0th or -1st diffraction order by changing the parallel wavevector, which gives rise to enhanced 0th transmission (EOT) of the structure for small incident angles, and enhanced -1st diff…
We study, and illustrate with numerical calculations, transmission enhancement by subwavelength 2D slits due to the dominant role played by the excitation of the eigenmodes of plasmonic cylinders when they are placed at the aperture entrance; and also due to reinforced and highly localized energy in the slit as a consequence of the formation of a nanojet. We show that, providing the illumination is chosen such that an aperture transmitting eigenmode is generated, the phenomenon is independent of whether or not the slit alone produces extraordinary transmission; although in the former case this…
We investigate the mechanism of extraordinary optical transmission in subwave-length metal hole arrays. Experimental results for the arrays consisting of square or rectangle holes are well explained about the dependence of transmission strength on the polarization direction of the incident light. This polarization dependence occurs in each single-hole. For a hole array, there is in addition an interplay between the adjacent holes which is caused by the transverse magnetic field of surface plasmon polariton on the metal film surfaces. Based on the detailed study of a single-hole and two-hole st…
The extra energy, negative energy and annihilation of energy by the subwavelength conservative systems that have a wave nature of light or matter (quantum) objects are predicted. The creating and destroying of energy break the energy conservation law in any subwavelength physical system. The paradoxical phenomenon is demonstrated in the context of extraordinary transmission of light and matter through subwavelength apertures [T.W. Ebbesen et al., Nature (London) 391, 667 (1998) and E. Moreno et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 170406 (2005)].
Subwavelength-slotted parallel plate waveguides exhibit a localized electromagnetic resonance bound to the slits at a frequency slightly below the transverse electric cutoff [R. Merlin, Phys. Rev. X 2, 031015 (2012)]. The resonance is long-lived and, as opposed to the vanishingly small transmission shown by a single sub-wavelength aperture, it gives perfect transmission for perfectly-conducting plates. We show that the aperture-supported resonances of a pair of slotted copper plates have long lifetimes at THz frequencies. Finite element method calculations show that these bound resonances can …
We theoretically investigate second harmonic generation that originates from the nonlinear, magnetic Lorentz force term from single and multiple apertures carved on thick, opaque metal substrates. The linear transmission properties of apertures on metal substrates have been previously studied in the context of the extraordinary transmission of light. The transmission process is driven by a number of physical mechanisms, whose characteristics and relative importance depend on the thickness of the metallic substrate, slit size, and slit separation. In this work we show that a combination of cavi…
We present a concrete picture of spoof surface plasmons (SSPs) combined with cavity resonance to clarify the basic mechanism underlying extraordinary light transmission through metal films with subwavelength slits or holes. This picture may indicate a general mechanism of metallic nanostructure optics: When light is incident on a non-planar conducting surface, the free electrons cannot move homogeneously in response to the incident electric field, i.e., their movement can be impeded at the rough parts, forming inhomogeneous charge distributions. The oscillating charges/dipoles then emit photon…
Reconstruction of light profiles with amplitude and phase information, called holography, is an attractive optical technique to display three-dimensional images. Due to essential requirements for an ideal hologram, subwavelength control of both amplitude and phase is crucial. Nevertheless, traditional holographic devices have suffered from their limited capabilities of incomplete modulation in both amplitude and phase of visible light. Here, we propose a novel metasurface that is capable of completely controlling both amplitude and phase profiles of visible light independently with subwaveleng…
This paper has presented inversely determining the resonant configuration of the bilateral nanostructures for periodic metallic slits with extraordinary optical transmission performance. The topology optimization approach is utilized to implement the inverse design procedure. Several geometrical configurations of the bilateral nanostructures are derived for periodic metallic slits. The resonant performance of the derived nanostructures are demonstrated by the transmission spectra, where the transmission peak is presented at the specified wavelength in the inverse design procedure. This provide…
Extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) is a phenomenon of exceptional light transmission through a metallic film with hole arrays enhanced by surface plasmon (SP) resonance, which stimulates renewed research hotspots in metamaterials, subwavelength optics, and plasmonics. Below the frequency of the first order SP mode, f_pl0, the metallic film typically shows strong reflection and no EOT. Here, we report an unusual EOT phenomenon below fpl0, i.e., beyond the long-held spectral boundary of classic EOTs. It is induced by a novel bound surface state in a Fabry-Perot(F-P) cavity comprising a hol…
We study the problem of resonant extraordinary transmission of electromagnetic and acoustic waves through subwavelength slits in an infinite plate, whose thickness is close to a half-multiple of the wavelength. We build on the matched-asymptotics analysis of Holley & Schnitzer (Wave Motion, 91 102381, 2019), who considered a single-slit configuration assuming an idealised formulation where dissipation is neglected and the electromagnetic and acoustic problems are analogous. We here extend that theory to include thin dissipative boundary layers associated with finite conductivity of the plate i…
Plasmonic metasurfaces based on the extraordinary optical transmission effect (EOT) can be designed to efficiently transmit specific spectral bands from the visible to the far-infrared regimes, offering numerous applications in im-portant technological fields such as compact multispectral imaging, biological and chemical sensing, or color displays. However, due to their subwavelength nature, EOT metasurfaces are nowadays fabricated with nano- and micro-lithographic techniques, requiring many processing steps and carried out in expensive cleanroom environments. In this work, we propose and expe…
This work presents a mathematical theory for electromagnetic scattering resonances in a subwavelength annular hole embedded in a metallic slab, with the annulus width $h\ll1$. The model is representative among many 3D subwavelength hole structures, which are able to induce resonant scattering of electromagnetic wave and the so-called extraordinary optical transmission. We develop a multiscale framework for the underlying scattering problem based upon a combination of the integral equation in the exterior domain and the waveguide mode expansion inside the tiny hole. The matching of the electrom…
