Numerical and experimental studies of transitional pipe flow have shown the prevalence of coherent flow structures that are dominated by downstream vortices. They attract special attention because they contribute predominantly to the increase of the Reynolds stresses in turbulent flow. In the present study we introduce a convenient detector for these coherent states, calculate the fraction of time the structures appear in the flow, and present a Markov model for the transition between the structures. The fraction of states that show vortical structures exceeds 24% for a Reynolds number of about Re=2200, and it decreases to about 20% for Re=2500. The Markov model for the transition between these states is in good agreement with the observed fraction of states, and in reasonable agreement with the prediction for their persistence. It provides insight into dominant qualitative changes of the flow when increasing the Reynolds number.
We present a unique pipe flow rig capable where simultaneous particle tracking and flow velocity measurements in a dilute, neutrally buoyant particulate pipe flow in regimes of transition to turbulence. The flow consists of solid glass spheres for the disperse phase, and a density-matching fluid for the carrier phase. The measurements are conducted using a bespoke, combined 2D PIV/ PTV technique. The technique takes advantage of a phase discrimination approach that involves separating the disperse and carrier phases based on their respective image characteristics. Our results show that the rig…
As everyone knows who has opened a kitchen faucet, pipe flow is laminar at low flow velocities and turbulent at high flow velocities. At intermediate velocities there is a transition wherein plugs of laminar flow alternate along the pipe with "flashes" of a type of fluctuating, non-laminar flow which remains poorly known. We show experimentally that the fluid friction of flash flow is diagnostic of turbulence. We also show that the statistics of flash flow are in keeping with Kolmogorov's phenomenological theory of turbulence (so that, e.g., the energy spectra of both flash flow and turbulent …
Pipe flow often traverses a regime where laminar and turbulent flow co-exist. Prandtl and Tietjens explained this intermittency as a feedback between the fluctuations of the internal flow resistance and the constant pressure drop driving the flow. However, because the focus has moved towards studying intermittency without flow fluctuations near the universal critical Reynolds number, their explanation has largely disappeared. Here we refine the mechanism, which has never been put to a quantitative test, to develop a model that agrees with experiments at higher Reynolds numbers, enabling us to …
The transition to turbulence in pipes is characterized by a coexistence of laminar and turbulent states. At the lower end of the transition, localized turbulent pulses, called puffs, can be excited. Puffs can decay when rare fluctuations drive them close to an edge state lying at the phase-space boundary with laminar flow. At higher Reynolds numbers, homogeneous turbulence can be sustained, and dominates over laminar flow. Here we complete this landscape of localized states, placing it within a unified bifurcation picture. We demonstrate our claims within the Barkley model, and motivate them g…
A new methodology based on energy flux similarity is suggested in this paper for large eddy simulation (LES) of transitional and turbulent flows. Existing knowledge reveals that the energy cascade generally exists in transitional and turbulent flows with different distributions, and the characteristic quantity of scale interaction in energy cascade processes is energy flux. Therefore, energy flux similarity is selected as the basic criterion to secure the flow field getting from LES highly similar to the real flow field. Through a priori tests, we find that the energy flux from the tensor-diff…
Although the roll/streak structure is ubiquitous in pre-transitional wall-bounded shear flow, this structure is linearly stable if the idealization of laminar flow is made. Lacking an instability, the large transient growth of the roll/streak structure has been invoked to explain its appearance as resulting from chance occurrence in the free-stream turbulence (FST) of perturbations configured to optimally excite it. However, there is an alternative interpretation which is that FST interacts with the roll/streak structure to destabilize it. Statistical state dynamics (SSD) provides analysis met…
The effect of slip surfaces on the laminar-turbulent separatrix of plane Poiseuille flow is studied by direct numerical simulation. Turbulence lifetimes, the likelihood that turbulence is sustained, is investigated for transitional flows with various slip lengths. Slip surfaces decrease the likelihood of sustained turbulence compared to the no-slip case, and likelihood is further decreased as slip length is increased. A deterministic analysis of the effects of slip surfaces on transition to turbulence is performed using nonlinear traveling wave solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations, also kn…
Large eddy simulations are performed to study tonal noise generation by a NACA0012 airfoil at an angle of attack ${α= 3}$ deg. and freestream Mach number of ${M_{\infty} = 0.3}$. Different Reynolds numbers are analyzed spanning ${0.5 \times 10^5 \le Re \le 4 \times 10^5}$. Results show that the flow patterns responsible for noise generation appear from different laminar separation bubbles, including one observed over the airfoil suction side and another near the trailing edge, on the pressure side. For lower Reynolds numbers, intermittent vortex dynamics on the suction side results in either c…
Turbulent spots surrounded by laminar flow are a landmark of transitional shear flows, but the dependence of their kinematic properties on spatial structure is poorly understood. We here investigate this dependence in pipe flow for Reynolds numbers between 1500 and 5000. We compute spatially localized relative periodic orbits in long pipes and show that their upstream and downstream fronts decay exponentially towards the laminar profile. This allows to model the fronts by employing the linearized Navier-Stokes equations, and the resulting model yields the spatial decay rate and the front veloc…
The partially-averaged Navier-Stokes (PANS) equations are used to predict the variable-density Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) flow at Atwood number 0.5 and maximum Reynolds number $500$. This is a prototypical problem of material mixing featuring laminar, transitional, and turbulent flow, instabilities and coherent structures, density fluctuations, and production of turbulence kinetic energy by both shear and buoyancy mechanisms. These features pose numerous challenges to modeling and simulation, making the RT flow ideal to develop the validation space of the recently proposed PANS BHR-LEVM closure. The…
Input-output analysis of transitional channel flows has proven to be a valuable analytical tool for identifying important flow structures and energetic motions. The traditional approach abstracts the nonlinear terms as forcing that is unstructured, in the sense that this forcing is not directly tied to the underlying nonlinearity in the dynamics. This paper instead employs a structured singular value-based approach that preserves certain input-output properties of the nonlinear forcing function in an effort to recover the larger range of key flow features identified through nonlinear analysis,…
The complex flow features resulting from the laminar-turbulent transition (LTT) in a sudden expansion pipe flow, with expansion ratio of 1:2 subjected to an inlet vortex perturbation is investigated by means of direct numerical simulations (DNS). It is shown that the threshold for LTT described by a power law scaling with -3 exponent that links the perturbation intensity to the subcritical transitional Reynolds number. Additionally, a new type of instability is found within a narrow range of flow parameters. This instability originates from the region of intense shear rate which is a result of…
Flows through medical devices as well as in anatomical vessels despite being at moderate Reynolds number may exhibit transitional or even turbulent character. In order to validate numerical methods and codes used for biomedical flow computations, the U.S. food and drug administration (FDA) established an experimental benchmark, which was a pipe with gradual contraction and sudden expansion representing a nozzle. The experimental results for various Reynolds numbers ranging from 500 to 6500 were publicly released. Previous and recent computational investigations of flow in the FDA nozzle found …
Turbulent-laminar patterns are ubiquitous near transition in wall-bounded shear flows. Despite recent progress in describing their dynamics in analogy to non-equilibrium phase transitions, there is no theory explaining their emergence. Dynamical-system approaches suggest that invariant solutions to the Navier--Stokes equations, such as traveling waves and relative periodic orbits in pipe flow, act as building blocks of the disordered dynamics. While recent studies have shown how transient chaos arises from such solutions, the ensuing dynamics lacks the strong fluctuations in size, shape and sp…
In shear flows at transitional Reynolds numbers, localized patches of turbulence, known as puffs, coexist with the laminar flow. Recently, Avila et al., Phys. Rev. Let. 110, 224502 (2013) discovered two spatially localized relative periodic solutions for pipe flow, which appeared in a saddle-node bifurcation at low speeds. Combining slicing methods for continuous symmetry reduction with Poincaré sections for the first time in a shear flow setting, we compute and visualize the unstable manifold of the lower-branch solution and show that it contains a heteroclinic connection to the upper branch …
In this essay, we recall the specificities of the transition to turbulence in wall-bounded flows and present recent achievements in the understanding of this problem. The transition is abrupt with laminar-turbulent coexistence over a finite range of Reynolds numbers, the transitional range. The archetypical cases of Poiseuille pipe flow and plane Couette flow are first reviewed at the phenomenological level, together with a few other flow configurations. Theoretical approaches are then examined with particular emphasis on the existence of special nontrivial solutions to the Navier-Stokes equat…
We investigate the local self-sustained process underlying spiral turbulence in counter-rotating Taylor-Couette flow using a periodic annular domain, shaped as a parallelogram, two of whose sides are aligned with the cylindrical helix described by the spiral pattern. The primary focus of the study is placed on the emergence of drifting-rotating waves ({\sc drw}) that capture, in a relatively small domain, the main features of coherent structures typically observed in developed turbulence. The transitional dynamics of the subcritical region, far below the first instability of the laminar circul…

A high-fidelity simulation of the shock/transitional boundary layer interaction caused by a 15-degrees axisymmetrical compression ramp is performed at a freestream Mach number of 5 and a transitional Reynolds number. The inlet of the computational domain is perturbed with a white noise in order to excite convective instabilities. Coherent structures are extracted using Spectral Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (SPOD), which gives a mathematically optimal decomposition of spatio-temporally correlated structures within the flow. The mean flow is used to perform a resolvent analysis in order to st…
