We examine some of the optical properties of a metamaterial consisting of thin layers of alternating metal and dielectric. We can model this material as a homogeneous effective medium with anisotropic dielectric permittivity. When the components of this permittivity have different signs, the behavior of the system becomes very interesting: the normally evanescent parts of a P-polarized incident field are now transmitted, and there is a preferred direction of propagation.
We show that a slab of this material can form an image with sub-wavelength details, at a position which depends on the frequency of light used. The quality of the image is affected by absorption and by the finite width of the layers; we go beyond the effective medium approximation to predict how thin the layers need to be in order to obtain subwavelength resolution.
We show that a nonlinear metallo-dielectric layered slab of subwavelength thickness and very small average dielectric permittivity displays optical multistable behavior at arbitrary low optical intensities. This is due to the fact that, in the presence of the small linear permittivity, one of the multiple electromagnetic slab states exists no matter how small is the transmitted optical intensity. We prove that multiple states at ultra-low optical intensities can be reached only by simultaneously operating on the incident optical intensity and incidence angle. By performing full wave simulation…
The whispering-gallery mode (WGM) excitation and Luneburg lens (LL) effect are studied for a lossy circularly-layered dielectric cylinder illuminated by a beam field. The latter is simulated by the Complex Source-Point (CSP) beam. Exact series solution to the wave scattering problem is used to obtain the far-field patterns and directivity. The WG mode effect is shown to undermine the LL performance. Index Terms: Layered circular dielectric cylinder, Complex source point beam, Whispering-gallery modes, Luneburg lens.
We describe the change of the spatial distribution of the state of polarisation occurring during two-dimensional imaging through a multilayer and in particular through a layered metallic flat lens. Linear or circular polarisation of incident light is not preserved due to the difference in the amplitude transfer functions for the TM and TE polarisations. In effect, the transfer function and the point spread function that characterize 2D imaging through a multilayer both have a matrix form and cross-polarisation coupling is observed for spatially modulated beams with a linear or circular inciden…
We theoretically investigate the electromagnetic response of a novel class of multi-layered metamaterials obtained by alternating graphene sheets and dielectric layers, the whole structure not exhibiting a plane of reflection symmetry along the stacking direction. We show that the electromagnetic response of the structure is characterized by a magneto-electric coupling described by an effective chiral parameter. Exploiting the intrinsic tunability of the graphene-light coupling, we prove that one can tune both the dielectric and the chiral electromagnetic response by varying the graphene chemi…
Metal-dielectric layered stacks for imaging with sub-wavelength resolution are regarded as linear isoplanatic systems - a concept popular in Fourier Optics and in scalar diffraction theory. In this context, a layered flat lens is a one-dimensional spatial filter characterised by the point spread function. However, depending on the model of the source, the definition of the point spread function for multilayers with sub-wavelength resolution may be formulated in several ways. Here, a distinction is made between a soft source and hard electric or magnetic sources. Each of these definitions leads…
We propose a fiber-based environmental sensor that exploits the reflection phase shift tunability provided by the use of layered coatings composed of dielectric slabs spaced by conducting membranes. A transfer matrix study is done in a simplified theoretical model, for which an enhanced sensitivity of the reflection interference pattern to the output medium is demonstrated, in the typical refractive index range of liquid media. An experimental configuration using a cascaded Fabry-Perot microcavity coated by a graphene oxide/polyethylenimine (GO/PEI) multilayered structure is demonstrated. Its …
We study the propagation of surface electromagnetic waves along the metallic surface covered by various layered dielectric structures. We show that strong radiative losses typical for the scattering of the surface wave can be considerably suppressed when single dielectric step is substituted by gradient index or periodic layered structure.
The Goos-Hanchen effect of light reflected from sandwich (three-layered) structures composed of a superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 film and two different dielectric films is investigated theoretically. It has been shown that optical anisotropy of YBa2Cu3O7 film, as well as its positions in the three-layer specimen, strongly effects on the lateral shift values. We have shown that, for all positions of the superconducting film in the three-layered structure, variation of temperature makes possible to control the values of the lateral shift of TE-polarized light at the incidence angles close to pseudo-B…
A radial transverse resonance model for two cylindrical concentric layers with different complex dielectric constants is presented. An inverse problem with four unknowns - 3 physical material parameters and one dimensional dielectric layer thickness parameter- is solved by employing TE110 and TE210 modes with different radial field distribution. First a Newton-Raphson algorithm is used to solve a least square problem with a Lorentzian function (as resonance model and "measured" data generator). Then found resonance frequencies and quality factors are used in a second inverse Newton-Raphson alg…
In this work we have performed an analysis of electrostriction mechanism of optical to acoustical energy conversion on the interface of two materials with low optical absorption. We compared this method of conversion with widely used thermal conversion based on thin metal film. It was shown, that the contribution of electrostriction mechanism is significantly lower in case of homogeneous medium. We demonstrated the possibility to amplify the generated acoustic signal by excitation of the guided modes, which energy is localized in a thin (of about 200-400 nm thickness) dielectric layer. Due to …
We analyse van der Waals interactions between a pair of dielectrically anisotropic plane-layered media interacting across a dielectrically isotropic solvent medium. We develop a general formalism based on transfer matrices to investigate the van der Waals torque and force in the limit of weak birefringence and dielectric matching between the ordinary axes of the anisotropic layers and the solvent. We apply this formalism to study the following systems: (i) a pair of single anisotropic layers, (ii) a single anisotropic layer interacting with a multilayered slab consisting of alternating anisotr…
We investigate surface waves at the boundary between a semi-infinite layered metal-dielectric nanostructure cut normally to the layers and a semi-infinite dielectric. Spatial dispersion properties of such a nanostructure can be dramatically affected by coupling of surface plasmons polaritons at different metal-dielectric interfaces. As a consequence, the effective medium approach is not applicable in general. It is demonstrated that Dyakonov-like surface waves with hybrid polarization can propagate in an angular range substantially enlarged compared to conventional birefringent materials. Our …
The concept of the broadband epsilon-near-zero meta-atom consisting of layered stacks with specified metallic filling ratio and thickness is proposed based on the Bergman spectral representation of the effective permittivity. The step-like metal-dielectric multilayer structures are designed to achieve realistic broadband epsilon-near-zero meta-atoms in optical frequency range. These meta-atoms can be integrated as building blocks for unconventional optical components with exotic electromagnetic properties over a wide frequency range, such as the demonstrated broadband directional emission and …
The propagation of electromagnetic waves through disordered layered system is considered in the paradigm of Maxwell's equations homogenization. In spite of the impossibility to describe the system in terms of effective dielectric permittivity and/or magnetic permeability the unified way to describe the propagation and Anderson localization of electromagnetic waves is proposed in terms of the introduced effective wave vector (effective refractive index). It is demonstrated that both real and imaginary parts of the effective wave vector (contrary to effective dielectric permittivity and/or magne…
The use of metamaterial as a way to mitigate the negative effects of absorption in metals on the Purcell effect in metal-dielectric structures is investigated. A layered metal-dielectric structure is considered as an anisotropic medium in the long-wavelength limit. The dispersion of the surface plasmon appearing at the boundary between such a structure and a different dielectric material, as well as the position of the peak in the local density of states are studied for various combinations of materials and filling factors of the periodic structure. The calculated frequency dependence of the P…
The nonlinear interaction of waves in PT-symmetric periodic stacks with an embedded nonlinear anisotropic dielectric layer illuminated by plane waves of two tones is examined. The three-wave interaction technique is applied to study the nonlinear processes. It is shown that the intensity of the three-wave mixing process can be significantly enhanced in resonant cavities based on PT-symmetric periodic structures, especially as the pumping wave frequency is near the coherent perfect absorber-lasing resonances. The main mechanisms and properties of the combinatorial frequency generation and emiss…
Imaging with a layered superlens is a spatial filtering operation characterized by the point spread function (PSF). We show that in the same optical system the image of a narrow sub-wavelength Gaussian incident field may be surprisingly dissimilar to the PSF, and the width of PSF is not a straightforward measure of resolution. FWHM or std. dev. of PSF give ambiguous information about the actual resolution, and imaging of objects smaller than the FWHM of PSF is possible. A multiscale analysis of imaging gives good insight into the peculiar scale-dependent properties of sub-wavelength imaging.
We theoretically investigate the dispersion and polarization properties of the electromagnetic waves in a multi-layered structure composed of a magneto-optic waveguide on dielectric substrate covered by one-dimensional dielectric photonic crystal. The numerical analysis of such a complex structure shows polarization filtration of TE- and TM-modes depending on geometrical parameters of the waveguide and photonic crystal. We consider different regimes of the modes propagation inside such a structure: when guiding modes propagate inside the magnetic film and decay in the photonic crystal; when th…
Dispersion forces such as van der Waals forces between two microscopic particles, the Casimir--Polder forces between a particle and a macroscopic object or the Casimir force between two dielectric objects are well studied in vacuum. However, in realistic situations the interacting objects are often embedded in an environmental medium. Such a solvent influences the induced dipole interaction. With the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, these interactions are mediated via an exchange of virtual photons. Via this method the impact of a homogeneous solvent medium can be expressed as…
We study the spontaneous emission of a dipole emitter imbedded into a layered metal-dielectric metamaterial. We demonstrate ultra-high values of the Purcell factor in such structures due to a high density of states with hyperbolic isofrequency surfaces. We reveal that the traditional effective-medium approach greatly underestimates the value of the Purcell factor due to the presence of an effective nonlocality, and we present an analytical model which agrees well with numerical calculations.
We show that in the presence of a rapidly modulated dielectric permittivity with a large modulation depth (Kapitza medium) a novel and robust regime of diffractionless electromagnetic propagation occurs. This happens when the mean value to depth ratio of the dielectric profile is comparable to the small ratio between the modulation period and the wavelength. We show that the standard effective medium theory is inadequate to describe the proposed regime and that, its occurrence is not substantially hampered by medium losses. We check the feasibility of the proposed regime by means of a large mo…
We report bound states in the radiation continuum (BSCs) in a single infinitely long dielectric rod with periodically stepwise modulated permittivity alternating from $ε_1$ to $ε_2$. For $ε_2=1$ in air the rod is equivalent to a stack of dielectric discs with permittivity $ε_1$. Because of rotational and translational symmetries the BSCs are classified by orbital angular momentum $m$ and the Bloch wave vector $β$ directed along the rod. For $m=0$ and $β=0$ the symmetry protected BSCs have definite polarization and occur in a wide range of the radius of the rod and the dielectric permittivities…
The electromagnetic response of a two-dimensional metal embedded in a periodic array of a dielectric host can give rise to a plasmonic Dirac point that emulates Epsilon-Near-Zero (ENZ) behavior. This theoretical result is extremely sensitive to tructural features like periodicity of the dielectric medium and thickness imperfections. We propose that such a device can actually be realized by using graphene as the 2D metal and materials like the layered semiconducting transition-metal dichalcogenides or hexagonal boron nitride as the dielectric host. We propose a systematic approach, in terms of …
We investigate the scattering and absorption properties of anisotropic metal-dielectric core-shell nanoparticles. It is revealed that the radially anisotropic dielectric layer can accelerate the evanescent decay of the localized resonant surface modes, leading to Q-factor and absorption rate enhancement. Moreover, the absorption cross section can be maximized to reach the single resonance absorption limit. We further show that such artificial anisotropic cladding materials can be realized by isotropic layered structures, which may inspire many applications based on scattering and absorption of…
Epsilon-Near-Zero materials exhibit a transition in the real part of the dielectric permittivity from positive to negative value as a function of wavelength. Here we study metal-dielectric layered metamaterials in the homogenised regime (each layer has strongly subwavelength thickness) with zero real part of the permittivity in the near-infrared region. By optically pumping the metamaterial we experimentally show that close to the Epsilon-Equal-to-Zero (EEZ) wavelength the permittivity exhibits a marked transition from metallic (negative permittivity) to dielectric (positive permittivity) as a…
The recent realization of photonic topological insulators has brought the discovery of fundamentally new states of light and revolutionary applications such as non-reciprocal devices for photonic diodes and robust waveguides for light routing. The spatially distinguished layer pseudospin has attracted attention in two-dimensional electronic materials. Here we report layered photonic topological insulators based on all-dielectric bilayer photonic crystal slabs. The introduction of layer pseudospin offers more dispersion engineering capability, leading to the layer-polarized and layer-mixed phot…
A simple but efficient approach for the synthesis of transmission-type wideband polarization converters is presented. The proposed configuration comprises multilayer metasurfaces including resonant particles which are progressively rotated layer by layer. The progressive rotation of the particles allows for a polarization conversion over a large frequency band. The polarizing structure is efficiently designed and optimized through a transmission line model approach handling the cascade of anisotropic impedance layers and dielectrics. An optimized 8-layers design based on gradually rotated dipo…
The coupling between multiple nanocavities in close vicinity leads to hybridization of their modes. Stacked Metal/Insulator/Metal (MIM) nanocavities constitute a highly versatile and very interesting model system to study and engineer such mode coupling, since they can be realized by lithography-free fabrication methods with fine control on the optical and geometrical parameters. The resonant modes of such MIM cavities are epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) resonances, which are appealing for non-linear photophysics and a variety of applications. Here we study the hybridization of ENZ resonances in MIMIM…
