We have measured -3.5 dB (-8.1 dB corrected for losses) relative intensity squeezing between the probe and conjugate beams generated by stimulated, nondegenerate four-wave mixing in hot rubidium vapor. Unlike early observations of squeezing in atomic vapors based on saturation of a two-level system, our scheme uses a resonant nonlinearity based on ground-state coherences in a three-level system. Since this scheme produces narrowband, squeezed light near an atomic resonance it is of interest for experiments involving cold atoms or atomic ensembles.
We report the generation of strong, bright-beam intensity-difference squeezing down to measurement frequencies below 10 Hz. We generate two-mode squeezing in a four-wave mixing (4WM) process in Rb vapor, where the single-pass-gain nonlinear process does not require cavity locking and only relies on passive stability. We use diode laser technology and several techniques, including dual seeding, to remove the noise introduced by seeding the 4WM process as well as the background noise. Twin-beam intensity-difference squeezing down to frequencies limited only by the mechanical and atmospheric stab…
The effects of high pulse intensity and chirp on two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy signals are experimentally investigated in the highly non-perturbative regime using atomic rubidium vapor as clean model system. Data analysis is performed based on higher-order Feynman diagrams and non-perturbative numerical simulations of the system response. It is shown that higher-order contributions may lead to a fundamental change of the static appearance and beating-maps of the 2D spectra and that chirped pulses enhance or suppress distinct higher-order pathways. We further give an estimate of the t…
The directional spiking infrared and ultraviolet emission from sodium vapors excited to the 4D5/2 level by a continuous-wave resonant laser pump, that constitute a novel feature of the cooperative effects, has been analyzed. Cascade mirrorless lasing at 2207 and 2338 nm on population-inverted transitions and ultraviolet radiation at 330 nm that is generated due to four-wave mixing process demonstrate a high degree of intensity correlation.
The intensity noise of nanolasers and nanoLEDs is analyzed for conventional and quiet pumping of electrons into the active region. It is shown that nanoLEDs with Purcell-enhanced emission rates, enabled by extreme dielectric confinement, may be excellent sources of intensity-squeezed light within a bandwidth of several gigahertz. The physics of intensity squeezing is elucidated and it is shown that the parameter dependence can be explained by an effective Fano factor.
Intensity squeezing, i.e., photon number fluctuations below the shot noise limit, is a fundamental aspect of quantum optics and has wide applications in quantum metrology. It was predicted in 1979 that the intensity squeezing could be observed in resonance fluorescence from a two-level quantum system. Yet, its experimental observation in solid states was hindered by inefficiencies in generating, collecting and detecting resonance fluorescence. Here, we report the intensity squeezing in a single-mode fibre-coupled resonance fluorescence single-photon source based on a quantum dot-micropillar sy…
Narrow-band intensity-difference squeezing beams have important applications in quantum metrology and gravitational wave detection. The best way to generate narrow-band intensity-difference squeezing is to employ parametrically-amplified four-wave mixing process in high-gain atomic media. Such IDS can be further enhanced by cascading multiple parametrically-amplified four-wave mixing processes in separate atomic media. The complicated experimental setup, added losses and required high-power pump laser with the increase of number of stages can limit the wide uses of such scheme in practical app…
We demonstrate compact and accessible squeezed-light magnetometry using four-wave mixing in a single hot rubidium vapor cell. The strong intrinsic coherence of the four wave mixing process results in nonlinear magneto-optical rotation (NMOR) on each mode of a two mode relative-intensity squeezed state. This framework enables 4.7 dB of quantum noise reduction while the opposing polarization rotation signals of the probe and conjugate fields add to increase the total signal to noise ratio.
We develop a model to calculate nonlinear polarization in a nondegenerate four-wave mixing in diamond configuration which includes the effects of hyperfine structure and Doppler broadening. We verify the model against the experiment with $5^{2}S_{1/2}$, $5^{2}P_{3/2}$, $5^{2}D_{3/2}$ and $5^{2}P_{1/2}$ levels of rubidium 85. Treating the multilevel atomic system as a combination of many four-level systems we are able to express the nonlinear susceptibility of a thermal ensemble in a low-intensity regime in terms of Voigt-type profiles and obtain an excellent conformity of theory and experiment…
Intensity noise cross-correlation of the polarization eigenstates of light emerging from an atomic vapor cell in the Hanle configuration allows one to perform high resolution spectroscopy with free- running semiconductor lasers. Such an approach has shown promise as an inexpensive, simpler approach to magnetometry and timekeeping, and as a probe of dynamics of atomic coherence in warm vapor cells. We report that varying the post-cell polarization state basis yields intensity noise spectra which more completely probe the prepared atomic state. We advance and test the hypothesis that the observe…
Quantum states of light can improve imaging whenever the image quality and resolution are limited by the quantum noise of the illumination. In the case of a bright illumination, quantum enhancement is obtained for a light field composed of many squeezed transverse modes. A possible realization of such a multi-spatial-mode squeezed state is a field which contains a transverse plane in which the local electric field displays reduced quantum fluctuations at all locations, on any one quadrature. Using nondegenerate four-wave mixing in a hot vapor, we have generated a bichromatic multi-spatial-mode…
We investigate the effect of 2-beam coupling in different imaging geometries in generating intensity-difference squeezing from four-wave mixing (4WM) in Rb atomic vapors. A recently-introduced dual-seeding technique can cancel out the classical noise in a seeded four-wave mixing process. This dual-seeding technique, however, can introduce new complications that involve 2-beam coupling between different seeded spatial modes in the atomic vapor and can ruin squeezing at frequencies on the order of the atomic linewidth and below. This complicates some forms of quantum imaging using these systems.…
We propose and demonstrate a polarization-based truncated SU(1,1) interferometer that outputs the desired optical joint-quadrature of a two-mode squeezed vacuum field and allows its measurements using a single balanced homodyne detector. Using such setup we demonstrated up to $\approx$2 dB of quantum noise suppression below the shot-noise limit in intensity-difference and phase-sum joint quadratures, and confirmed entanglement between the two quantum fields. Our proposed technique results in a better balance between the two ports of the detector and, consequently, in better common noise suppre…
The observation of spatial quantum noise reduction, or spatial squeezing, with a large number of photons can lead to a significant advantage in quantum imaging and quantum metrology due to the scaling of the signal-to-noise ratio with the number of photons. Here we present a systematic study of the limiting factors that play a role on the measurement of spatial squeezing with an electron-multiplying charge coupled device (EMCCD) camera in the limit of bright quantum states of light generated with a four-wave mixing process in an atomic vapor cell. We detect a total number of photons per beam o…
We propose and demonstrate an experimental implementation for the observation of magnetic fields from spatial features of absorption profiles in a warm atomic vapor. A radially polarized vector beam that traverses an atomic vapor will generate an absorption pattern with petal-like structure by the mediation of a transverse magnetic field (TMF). The spatial absorption pattern rotates when the azimuthal angle of the TMF is changed, while its contrast decreases when the longitudinal component of the magnetic field increases. By analyzing the intensity distribution of the transmitted pattern we ca…
We theoretically investigate the mechanism of two-mode quadrature squeezing in regime of four-wave mixing in a Λ-scheme of three-level atoms embedded in a thermal reservoir. We demonstrate that the process of nonlinear transfer of noise from the low frequency of ground state splitting to the optical frequency drastically modifies the condition of effective two-mode squeezing. The damage factor is significant if number of thermal photons at the low frequency is high and the role of inelastic processes in ground state coherence decay is not negligible. We found the optimal conditions for squeezi…
We investigate the prospects of using two-mode intensity squeezed twin-beams, generated in Rb vapor, to improve the sensitivity of spectroscopic measurements by engaging two-photon Raman transitions. As a proof of principle demonstration, we demonstrated the quantum-enhanced measurements of the Rb $5D_{3/2}$ hyperfine structure with reduced requirements for the Raman pump laser power and Rb vapor number density.
We study the strong coupling between photons and atoms that can be achieved in an optical nanofiber geometry when the interaction is dispersive. While the Purcell enhancement factor for spontaneous emission into the guided mode does not reach the strong-coupling regime for individual atoms, one can obtain high cooperativity for ensembles of a few thousand atoms due to the tight confinement of the guided modes and constructive interference over the entire chain of trapped atoms. We calculate the dyadic Green's function, which determines the scattering of light by atoms in the presence of the fi…
