It is shown that the transparency of opaque material with negative permittivity exhibits resonant behavior. The resonance occurs as a result of the excitation of the surface waves at slab boundaries. Dramatic field amplification of the incident evanescent fields at the resonance improves the resolution of the the sub-wavelength imaging system (superlens). A finite thickness slab can be totally transparent to a \textit{p}-polarized obliquely incident electromagnetic wave for certain values of the incidence angle and wave frequency corresponding to the excitation of the surface modes. At the resonance, two evanescent waves have a finite phase shift providing non-zero energy flux through the non-transparent region.
We propose a concept of disordered resonant media, which are characterized by random variations of their parameters along the light propagation direction. In particular, a simple model of disorder considered in the paper implies random change of the density of active particles (two-level atoms). Within this model, the effect of disorder on self-induced transparency (SIT) is analyzed using numerical simulations of light pulse propagation through the medium. The transition from the SIT to localization regime is revealed as well as its dependence on the disorder level, atom density, medium thickn…

We present an experimental study on the cavity-atom ensemble system, and realize the doubly-resonant cavity enhanced electromagnetically induced transparency, where both the probe and control lasers are resonant with a Fabry-Perot cavity. We demonstrate the precise frequency manipulating of the hybrid optical-atomic resonances, through either temperature or cavity length tuning. In such a system, the control power can be greatly enhanced due to the cavity, and all-optical switching is achieved with a much lower control laser power compared to previous studies. A new theoretical model is develo…
Frequency range and explicit expressions for negative permittivity and permeability for an isotropic medium formed by a lattice of perfectly conducting $Ω$ particles
The resonant-state expansion, a recently developed powerful method in electrodynamics, is generalized here for open optical systems containing magnetic, chiral, or bi-anisotropic materials. It is shown that the key matrix eigenvalue equation of the method remains the same, but the matrix elements of the perturbation now contain variations of the permittivity, permeability, and bi-anisotropy tensors. A general normalization of resonant states in terms of the electric and magnetic fields is presented.
We report an observation of a 148-fold suppression of resonant absorption of 14.4-keV photons from exp(-5.2) to exp(-0.2) with preservation of their spectral and temporal characteristics in an ensemble of the resonant two-level Fe-57 nuclei at room temperature. The transparency was induced via collective acoustic oscillations of nuclei. The proposed technique allows extending the concept of induced optical transparency to a hard x-ray/gamma-ray range and paves the way for acoustically controllable interface between x-ray/gamma-ray photons and nuclear ensembles, advancing the field of x-ray/gam…
We find that the electric field is not a suitable physical quantity to describe the response of a non-metallic material in the study of non-resonant near-field optics. In practice, we show the spin-less one-electron two-level system responds differently to longitudinal and transverse electric fields under the non-resonant condition. This difference originates from the non-relativistic nature of the system, and should exist in actual many-electron systems. For this type of system, it is a logical fallacy to use the constitutive equation in terms of the total electric field and the associated pe…

Local electromagnetic field enhancement in resonant metamaterials is useful for efficient generation of nonlinear phenomena; however, the field enhancement is suppressed by losses of nonlinear elements in metamaterials. For overcoming this issue, we investigate the nonlinear response of an electromagnetically induced transparency like metasurface loaded with gas as the nonlinear element. To induce nonlinearity in the gas associated with discharges, an electromagnetic wave with a modulated amplitude is incident on the metasurface. The measured waveform and spectrum of the transmitted electromag…
Recent improvements in the resonant-state expansion (RSE), focusing on the static mode contribution, have made it possible to treat transverse-magnetic (TM) modes of a spherically symmetric system with the same efficiency as their transverse-electric (TE) counterparts. We demonstrate here that the efficient inclusion of static modes in the RSE results in its quick convergence to the exact solution regardless of the static mode set used. We then apply the RSE to spherically symmetric systems with continuous radial variations of the permittivity. We show that in TM polarization, the spectral tra…
A rigorous method of calculating the electromagnetic field, the scattering matrix, and scattering cross-sections of an arbitrary finite three-dimensional optical system described by its permittivity distribution is presented. The method is based on the expansion of the Green's function into the resonant states of the system. These can be calculated by any means, including the popular finite element and finite-difference time-domain methods. However, using the resonant-state expansion with a spherically-symmetric analytical basis, such as that of a homogeneous sphere, allows to determine a comp…
At the planar interface between a material and vacuum, the complex surface response S(omega)=[eps(omega) 1]/[eps(omega)+1], with eps(omega) the relative complex dielectric permittivity of the material, exhibit resonances, typical of the surface polariton modes, when eps(omega) ~ 1. We show that for a moderately sharp resonance, S(omega) is satisfactorily described with a mere (complex) Lorentzian, independently of the details affecting the various bulk resonances describing ) eps(omega). Remarkably, this implies a quantitative correlation between the resonant behaviors of Re[S(omega)] and Im[S…
Metal/Insulator/Metal nanocavities (MIMs) are highly versatile systems for nanometric light confinement and waveguiding, and their optical properties are mostly interpreted in terms of surface plasmon polaritons. Although classic electromagnetic theory accurately describes their behavior, it often lacks physical insight, letting some fundamental aspects of light interaction with these structures unexplored. In this work, we elaborate a quantum mechanical description of the MIM cavity as a double barrier quantum well. We identify the square of the imaginary part of the refractive index of the m…
We develop and implement a new mathematical and computational framework for designing photonic elements with one or more high-$Q$ scattering resonances. The approach relies on solving for the poles of the scattering matrix, which mathematically amounts to minimizing the determinant of the Fredholm integral operator of the electric field with respect to the permittivity profile of the scattering element. We apply the method to design subwavelength gradient-permittivity structures with multiple scattering resonances and quality factors exceeding 500. We also find the spectral scattering cross se…
Photonic band structure and effective medium properties of doubly-resonant core-shell metallo-dielectric nanowire arrays: low-loss, isotropic optical negative-index behavior
In this study, we investigate plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) in a resonator structure consisting of two orthogonally-arranged metal-insulator-metal (MIM) nanocavities with the aim of spectral modulation of a specific resonant order of the resonator. Our FDTD simulations demonstrate that when both cavities in this structure resonate at the same frequency, the PIT effect can be used to induce spectral modulation. This spectral modulation depends on the resonance order of the cavity coupled directly to the external field, occurring when first-order resonance is exhibited, but not with second-…
The dispersive resonant-state expansion, developed for an accurate calculation of the resonant states in open optical systems with frequency dispersion, is applied here to realistic materials, such as metallic nanoparticles and semiconductor microspheres. The material permittivity is determined by fitting the measured indices of refraction and absorption with a generalized Drude-Lorentz model containing a number of poles in the complex frequency plane. Each Drude or Lorentz pole generates an infinite series of resonant states. Furthermore, for small nanoparticles, each of these poles produces …
General concept of Fano resonance is considered so that to show the possibility of this resonance in space. Using a recently found solution for a Bessel wave beam impinging a dielectric sphere, we analyze the electromagnetic fields near a microsphere with different optical size and permittivity values. We theoretically reveal a spatial Fano resonance when a resonant mode of the sphere interferes with {an amount of } non-resonant modes. This resonance results in a giant jump of the electric field behind the sphere impinged by the first-order Bessel beam. The local minimum of the electromagnetic…
