Classical plasmas in thermodynamic equilibrium should be neither para- nor diamagnetic due to the action of the Lorentz force. Magnetic confinement, however, is based on the observed diamagnetism of laboratory plasmas. The apparent paradox is investigated on the basis of the resistive magneto-hydrodynamic equations. It is found that, at least in simple plasma configurations, these equations do not permit a solution, i. e. the paradox cannot be resolved. It seems that the Lorentz force is a test-particle approximation which is not suitable to describe the interaction of moving particles in agreement with the conservation of energy.
A new mechanism for pressure profile relaxations in an edge tokamak plasma is derived from simulations within the two-fluid three-dimensional turbulence code EMEDGE3D. The relaxation is due to diamagnetic coupling in the resistive ballooning/drift wave dynamics: unstable modes experience explosive growth at high pressure gradients after a phase in which they are stabilized by the diamagnetic coupling leading to the onset of a transport barrier. The sheared $E\times B$ flow does not play any significant role. After relaxation the transport barrier forms again and it sets the conditions for a no…
In this letter, a phase transition of a non-equilibrated single component plasma evolving within a uniform constant magnetic field is demonstrated for the first time. We present classical fluid models that capture this phenomenon, confirm with N -particle simulations, derive constraints on parameters necessary to induce this phase transition, and suggest an experiment to test the novel predictions of the theory.
Two-dimensional fully kinetic particle-in-cell simulations of an electrodeless plasma thruster, which uses a magnetic nozzle, were conducted to investigate the thrust generation induced by the internal plasma current. The results clearly show that the $\bf{E} \times \bf{B}$ and diamagnetic current densities are the major components of the internal plasma current. The simulated pressure structures reproduced the experimentally observed structures well. The results for various magnetic field strengths reveal that the $\bf{E} \times \bf{B}$ effect decreases and the diamagnetic effect becomes domi…
In the present work, we report the dynamics and geometrical features of the plasma plume formed by the laser ablation of copper and graphite (carbon) targets in the presence of different transverse magnetic field. This work emphasizes on the effect of atomic mass of the plume species on the diamagnetic behaviour and geometrical aspect of the expanding plasma plume in the magnetic field. The time-resolved analysis of the simultaneously captured two directional images in orthogonal to the expansion axis is carried out for the comparative study of projected three-dimensional structure of copper a…

Ion-scale magnetospheres have been observed around comets, weakly-magnetized asteroids, and localized regions on the Moon, and provide a unique environment to study kinetic-scale plasma physics, in particular in the collisionless regime. In this work, we present the results of particle-in-cell simulations that replicate recent experiments on the Large Plasma Device at the University of California, Los Angeles. Using high-repetition rate lasers, ion-scale magnetospheres were created to drive a plasma flow into a dipolar magnetic field embedded in a uniform background magnetic field. The simulat…
Axisymmetric ($m=0$) gyrokinetic and extended-MHD simulations of sheared-flow Z-pinch plasma are performed with the high-order finite volume code COGENT. The present gyrokinetic model solves the long-wavelength limit of the gyrokinetic equation for both ion and electron species coupled to the electrostatic gyro-Poisson equation for the electrostatic potential. The electromagnetic MHD model includes the effects of the gyro-viscous pressure tensor, diamagnetic electron and ion heat fluxes, and generalized Ohm's law. A prominent feature of this work is that the radial profiles for the plasma dens…
