The reorientational nonlinearity of nematic liquid crystals enables a self-localized spatial soliton and its waveguide to be deflected or destroyed by a control beam propagating across the cell. We demonstrate a simple all-optical readdressing scheme by exploiting the lens-like perturbation induced by an external beam on both a nematicon and a co-polarized guided signal of different wavelength. Angular steering as large as 2.2 degrees was obtained for control powers as low as 32mW in the near infrared.
Sideband-resolved coupling between multiple photonic nanocavities and propagating mechanical waves in microwave Ku-band is demonstrated. Coherent and strong photon-phonon interaction is manifested with optomechanically induced transparency and absorption, and phase-coherent interaction in multiple cavities. Inside an echo chamber it is shown that a phonon pulse can interact with an embedded nanocavity for multiple times. Our device provides a scalable platform to optomechanically couple phonons and photons for microwave photonics and quantum photonics.
Acoustic wave devices provide a promising chip-scale platform for efficiently coupling radio frequency (RF) and optical fields. Here, we use an integrated piezo-optomechanical circuit platform that exploits both the piezoelectric and photoelastic coupling mechanisms to link 2.4 GHz RF waves to 194 THz (1550 nm) optical waves, through coupling to propagating and localized 2.4 GHz acoustic waves. We demonstrate acousto-optic modulation, resonant in both the optical and mechanical domains, in which waveforms encoded on the RF carrier are mapped to the optical field. We also show opto-acoustic mod…
In this manuscript we report on a near-feld study of two-dimensional plasmonic gold nano-wedges using electron energy loss spectroscopy in combination with scanning transmission electron microscopy, as well as discontinuous Galerkin time-domain computations. With increasing nano-wedge size, we observe a transition from localized surface plasmons on small nano-wedges to non-resonant propagating surface plasmon polaritons on large nano-wedges. Furthermore we demonstrate that nano-wedges with a groove cut can support localized as well as propagating plasmons in the same energy range.
Periodically structured materials can sustain both optical and mechanical excitations which are tailored by the geometry. Here we analyze the properties of dispersively coupled planar photonic and phononic crystals: optomechanical crystals. In particular, the properties of co-resonant optical and mechanical cavities in quasi-1D (patterned nanobeam) and quasi-2D (patterned membrane) geometries are studied. It is shown that the mechanical Q and optomechanical coupling in these structures can vary by many orders of magnitude with modest changes in geometry. An intuitive picture is developed based…
Localized and propagating surface plasmon resonances are known to show very pronounced interactions if they are simultaneously excited in the same nanostructure. Here we study the fano interference that occurs between localized (LSPR) and propagating (SPP) modes by means of phase sensitive spectroscopic ellipsometry. The sample structures consist of periodic gratings of gold nanodisks on top of a continuous gold layer and a thin dielectric spacer, in which the structural dimensions were tuned in such a way that the dipolar LSPR mode and the propagating SPP modes are excited in the same spectra…
Periodically structured materials can sustain both optical and mechanical modes. Here we investigate and observe experimentally the optomechanical properties of a conventional two-dimensional suspended photonic crystal defect cavity with a mode volume of $\sim$$3(λ/n)^{3}$. Two families of mechanical modes are observed: flexural modes, associated to the motion of the whole suspended membrane, and localized modes with frequencies in the GHz regime corresponding to localized phonons in the optical defect cavity of diffraction-limited size. We demonstrate direct measurements of the optomechanical…
Confining photons in cavities enhances the interactions between light and matter. In cavity optomechanics, this enables a wealth of phenomena ranging from optomechanically induced transparency to macroscopic objects cooled to their motional ground state. Previous work in cavity optomechanics employed devices where ubiquitous structural disorder played no role beyond perturbing resonance frequencies and quality factors. More generally, the interplay between disorder, which must be described by statistical physics, and optomechanical effects has thus far been unexplored. Here, we demonstrate how…
We demonstrate an optomechanical platform where optical mode conversion mediated by mechanical motion enables arbitrary tailoring of polarization states of propagating light fields. Optomechanical interactions are realized in a Fabry-Perót resonator, which naturally supports two polarization-degenerate states while an optical control field induces rotational symmetry breaking. Applying such principles, the entire Poincaré sphere is spanned by just optical control of the driving field, realizing reciprocal and non-reciprocal optomechanically-induced birefringence for linearly polarized and circ…
We demonstrate broad-band reconfiguration of coupled photonic crystal nanobeam cavities by using optical gradient force induced mechanical actuation. Propagating waveguide modes that exist over wide wavelength range are used to actuate the structures and in that way control the resonance of localized cavity mode. Using this all-optical approach, more than 18 linewidths of tuning range is demonstrated. Using on-chip temperature self-referencing method that we developed, we determined that 20 % of the total tuning was due to optomechanical reconfiguration and the rest due to thermo-optic effects…
We show that localized (non-evanescent) solutions to Maxwell equations exist, which propagate without distortion along normal waveguides with Superluminal speed.
By harnessing the resonant nature of localized electromagnetic modes in a nanostructured silicon membrane, an all-dielectric metamaterial can act as nonlinear medium at optical telecommunications wavelengths. We show that such metamaterials provide extremely large optomechanical nonlinearities, operating at intensities of only a few μW per unit cell and modulation frequencies as high as 152 MHz, thereby offering a path to fast, compact and energy efficient all-optical metadevices.
In this paper we study and design quasi-2D optomechanical crystals, waveguides, and resonant cavities formed from patterned slabs. Two-dimensional periodicity allows for in-plane pseudo-bandgaps in frequency where resonant optical and mechanical excitations localized to the slab are forbidden. By tailoring the unit cell geometry, we show that it is possible to have a slab crystal with simultaneous optical and mechanical pseudo-bandgaps, and for which optical waveguiding is not compromised. We then use these crystals to design optomechanical cavities in which strongly interacting, co-localized …
Using a semi-classical model to describe the interaction between coherent electromagnetic radiation and a Bose-Einstein condensate in the limit of zero temperature, including the back action of the atoms on the radiation, we have analyzed the phenomenon of emission of solitary-like wave packets which can accompany the formation of mutually localized atom-laser structures.

We report quantitative experimental measurements of the Abraham force associated with a propagating optical wave. We isolate this force using a guided light wave undergoing an adiabatic mode transformation (AMT) along a liquid-filled hollow optical fiber (HOF). Utilizing this light intensity distribution within the liquid, we were able to generate a time-averaged non-vanishing Abraham force density, while simultaneously suppressing the Abraham-Minkowski force density. The incident laser field induced a linear axial displacement of the air-liquid interface inside the HOF, which provided a direc…
We experimentally investigate second harmonic generation from strongly coupled localized and propagative phonon polariton modes in arrays of silicon carbide nanopillars. Our results clearly demonstrate the hybrid nature of the system's eigenmodes and distinct manifestation of strong coupling in the linear and nonlinear response. While in linear reflectivity the intensity of the two strongly-coupled branches is essentially symmetric and well explained by their respective localized or propagative components, the second harmonic signal presents a strong asymmetry. Analyzing it in detail, we revea…
Mechanical motion of photonic devices driven by optical forces provides a profound means of coupling between optical fields. The current focus of these optomechanical effects has been on cavity optomechanics systems in which co-localized optical and mechanical modes interact strongly to enable wave-mixing between photons and phonons and backaction cooling of mechanical modes. Alternatively, extended mechanical modes can also induce strong nonlocal effects on propagating optical fields or multiple localized optical modes at distances. Here, we demonstrate a novel multi-cavity optomechanical dev…
We study theoretically interaction of optically-pumped excitons with acoustic waves in planar semiconductor nanostructures in the strongly nonlinear regime. We start with the multimode optomechanical lasing regime for optical pump frequency {above} the exciton resonance and demonstrate broadband chaotic-like lasing spectra. We also predict formation of propagating optomechanical domain walls driven by optomechanical nonlinearity for the optical pump {below} the exciton resonance. Stability conditions for the domain walls are examined analytically and are in agreement with direct numerical simu…
In a previous paper of ours [Phys. Rev. E64 (2001) 066603, e-print physics/0001039] we have shown localized (non-evanescent) solutions to Maxwell equations to exist, which propagate without distortion with Superluminal speed along normal-sized waveguides, and consist in trains of "X-shaped" beams. Those solutions possessed therefore infinite energy. In this note we show how to obtain, by contrast, finite-energy solutions, with the same localization and Superluminality properties. We describe the design, fabrication, and characterization of a one-dimensional silicon photonic crystal cavity in which a central slot is used to enhance the overlap between highly localized optical and mechanical modes. The optical mode has an extremely small mode volume of 0.017 $(λ_{vac}/n)^3$, and an optomechanical vacuum coupling rate of 310 kHz is measured. With optical quality factors up to $1.2 \cdot 10^5$, fabricated devices are in the resolved-sideband regime. The electric field has its maximum at the slot wall and couples to the in-plane breathing motion of the slot. The optomechani…
The interaction of optical and mechanical modes in nanoscale optomechanical systems has been widely studied for applications ranging from sensing to quantum information science. Here, we develop a platform for cavity optomechanical circuits in which localized and interacting 1550 nm photons and 2.4 GHz phonons are combined with photonic and phononic waveguides. Working in GaAs facilitates manipulation of the localized mechanical mode either with a radio frequency field through the piezo-electric effect, or optically through the strong photoelastic effect. We use this to demonstrate a novel aco…
The interaction of optical and acoustic waves via stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) has recently reached on-chip platforms, which has opened new fields of applications ranging from integrated microwave photonics and on-chip narrow-linewidth lasers, to phonon-based optical delay and signal processing schemes. Since SBS is an effect that scales exponentially with interaction length, on-chip implementation on a short length scale is challenging, requiring carefully designed waveguides with optimized opto-acoustic overlap. In this work, we use the principle of Brillouin optical correlation dom…
We present the fabrication and characterization of an artificial crystal structure formed from a thin-film of silicon which has a full phononic bandgap for microwave X-band phonons and a two-dimensional pseudo-bandgap for near-infrared photons. An engineered defect in the crystal structure is used to localize optical and mechanical resonances in the bandgap of the planar crystal. Two-tone optical spectroscopy is used to characterize the cavity system, showing a large vacuum coupling rate of 220kHz between the fundamental optical cavity resonance at 195THz and a co-localized mechanical resonanc…
We study second harmonic generation in a negative index material cavity. The transmission spectrum shows a gap between the electric and magnetic plasma frequencies, so that localized and anti-localized states are allowed at the band edges. The process is made efficient by local phase matching conditions between a forward-propagating pump and a backward-propagating second harmonic signal. By simultaneously exciting the cavity with counter-propagating pulses one is able to enhance or inhibit absorption and stimulated processes. The control parameter is the relative phase difference between the t…
Utilizing a silicon nanobeam optomechanical crystal, we investigate the attractor diagram arising from the radiation pressure interaction between a localized optical cavity at $λ= 1552$nm and a mechanical resonance at $ω/2π= 3.72$GHz. At a temperature of $T \approx 10$K, highly nonlinear driving of mechanical motion is observed via continuous wave optical pumping. Introduction of a time-dependent (modulated) optical pump is used to steer the system towards an otherwise inaccessible dynamically stable attractor in which mechanical self-oscillation occurs for an optical pump red-detuned from the…
Structured, periodic optical materials can be used to form photonic crystals capable of dispersing, routing, and trapping light. A similar phenomena in periodic elastic structures can be used to manipulate mechanical vibrations. Here we present the design and experimental realization of strongly coupled optical and mechanical modes in a planar, periodic nanostructure on a silicon chip. 200-Terahertz photons are co-localized with mechanical modes of Gigahertz frequency and 100-femtogram mass. The effective coupling length, which describes the strength of the photon-phonon interaction, is as sma…
The demand for faster magnetization switching speeds and lower energy consumption has driven the field of spintronics in recent years. The magnetic tunnel junction is the most developed spintronic memory device in which the magnetization of the storage layer is switched by spin-transfer-torque or spin-orbit torque interactions. Whereas these novel spin-torque interactions exemplify the potential of electron-spin-based devices and memory, the switching speed is limited to the ns regime by the precessional motion of the magnetization. All-optical magnetization switching, based on the inverse Far…
From the demonstration of saturable absorption by Vavilow and Levshin in 1926, and with invention of the laser, unavailability of strongly nonlinear materials was a key obstacle for developing optical signal processing, in particular in transparent telecommunication networks. Today, most advanced photonic switching materials exploit gain dynamics and near-band and excitonic effects in semiconductors, nonlinearities in organic media with weakly-localized electrons and nonlinearities enhanced by hybridization with metamaterials. Here we report on a new type of artificial nonlinearity that is nan…
Gallium phosphide offers an attractive combination of a high refractive index ($n>3$ for vacuum wavelengths up to 4 μm) and a wide electronic bandgap (2.26 eV), enabling optical cavities with small mode volumes and low two-photon absorption at telecommunication wavelengths. Heating due to strongly confined light fields is therefore greatly reduced. Here, we investigate the benefits of these properties for cavity optomechanics. Utilizing a recently developed fabrication scheme based on direct wafer bonding, we realize integrated one-dimensional photonic crystal cavities made of gallium phosphid…
We present a design methodology and analysis of a cavity optomechanical system in which a localized GHz frequency mechanical mode of a nanobeam resonator is evanescently coupled to a high quality factor (Q>10^6) optical mode of a separate nanobeam optical cavity. Using separate nanobeams provides flexibility, enabling the independent design and optimization of the optics and mechanics of the system. In addition, the small gap (approx. 25 nm) between the two resonators gives rise to a slot mode effect that enables a large zero-point optomechanical coupling strength to be achieved, with g/2pi > …
Binding of particles through weak (non-covalent) interactions plays a central role in multiple modern disciplines, from Cooper pairing of electrons in superconductivity to formation of supramolecules in biochemistry. Optical solitons, which are analogous in many ways to particles, arise from a balance between nonlinearity and dispersion and have only been known to be able to form molecule-like, localized structures through covalent interactions due to direct overlapping. Non-covalent binding of optical solitons that based on long-rang interactions have, however, so far escaped experimental obs…
Here we demonstrate a novel smart magnetoplasmonic heterostructure for efficient control of light. It consists of gold nanoparticles embedded in a thin magnetic film covered with a gold layer pierces with periodic nanoslit array. Unique feature of the proposed structure is that it supports four different types of optical modes in the same frequency range including localized and propagating surface plasmons along with waveguide modes. A peculiar magneto-optical response appears at the frequencies of the mode hybridization. The most prominent result comes from hybridization of the localized and …
A development and an application of the localized function method based on the Galerkin method applying a set of Sine functions to approximate the unknown mode fields of the localized modes propagating along the photonic crystal fibres is proposed. A way for considerably reducing the number of integrals in the case of symmetrical holes shapes with respect to the axes of coordinate systems located at the centers of the holes, circular, elliptical etc., is also presented. The method does not require an expansion of the refractive index and thus inaccuracies of the expansion can be avoided. In th…
Optical measurements of a nanoscale silicon optomechanical crystal cavity with a mechanical resonance frequency of 3.6GHz are performed at sub-kelvin temperatures. We infer optical-absorption-induced heating and damping of the mechanical resonator from measurements of phonon occupancy and motional sideband asymmetry. At the lowest probe power and lowest fridge temperature (10mK), the localized mechanical resonance is found to couple at a rate of 400Hz (Q=9x10^6) to a thermal bath of temperature 270mK. These measurements indicate that silicon optomechanical crystals cooled to millikelvin temper…
An opto-electronic radio-frequency oscillator that is based on forward scattering by the guided acoustic modes of a standard single-mode optical fiber is proposed and demonstrated. An optical pump wave is used to stimulate narrowband, resonant guided acoustic modes, which introduce phase modulation to a co-propagating optical probe wave. The phase modulation is converted to an intensity signal at the output of a Sagnac interferometer loop. The intensity waveform is detected, amplified and driven back to modulate the optical pump. Oscillations are achieved at a frequency of 319 MHz, which match…
Bound states in the continuum (BICs), an emerging type of long-lived resonances different from the cavity-based ones, have been explored in several classical systems, including photonic crystals and surface acoustic waves. Here, we reveal symmetry-protected mechanical BICs in the structure of slab-on-substrate optomechanical crystals. Using a group theory approach, we identified all the mechanical BICs at the $Γ$ point in optomechanical crystals with $C_{4v}$ and $C_{6v}$ symmetries as examples, and analyzed their coupling with the co-localized optical BICs and guided resonances due to both mo…
Nanobeam optomechanical crystals, in which localized GHz frequency mechanical modes are coupled to wavelength-scale optical modes, are being employed in a variety of experiments across different material platforms. Here, we demonstrate the electrostatic tuning and stabilization of such devices, by integrating a Si$_3$N$_4$ slot-mode optomechanical crystal cavity with a nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) element, which controls the displacement of an additional "tuning" beam within the optical near-field of the optomechanical cavity. Under DC operation, tuning of the optical cavity wavelength…
It is of fundamental interest in controlling the light-matter interaction for a long time in the field of quantum information processing. However, usual excitation with the propagating photon can hardly excite a localized state of light while keeping the atom under a subradiant decay in an atom-waveguide system. Here, we propose a model of coupling between a giant atom and the dynamically-modulated coupled-resonator waveguide and find that a bound state, where the light shows the localization effect and atom exhibits a subradiant decay time, can be excited by a propagating photon. An analytica…
The field of topological photonics was initiated with the realization of a Chern insulator phase in a gyromagnetic photonic crystal (PhC) with broken time-reversal symmetry (T), hosting chiral edge states that are topologically protected propagating modes. Recent advances in higher-order band topology have discovered another type of topological state, as manifested by those modes localized at the corners of a sample, which are known as corner states. Here we report the realization of a quadrupole higher-order topological insulator phase in a gyromagnetic PhC, induced by a topological phase tra…
A general analysis of undistorted propagation of localized wavepackets in photonic crystals based on a Wannier-function expansion technique is presented. Different kinds of propagating and stationary spatio-temporal localized waves are found from an asymptotic analysis of the Wannier function envelope equation.
Demonstrating a device that efficiently connects light, motion, and microwaves is an outstanding challenge in classical and quantum photonics. We make significant progress in this direction by demonstrating a photonic crystal resonator on thin-film lithium niobate (LN) that simultaneously supports high-$Q$ optical and mechanical modes, and where the mechanical modes are coupled piezoelectrically to microwaves. For optomechanical coupling, we leverage the photoelastic effect in LN by optimizing the device parameters to realize coupling rates $g_0/2π\approx 120~\textrm{kHz}$. An optomechanical c…
In a previous paper [Phys. Rev. E64 (2001) 066603; e-print physics/0001039], we showed that localized Superluminal solutions to the Maxwell equations exist, which propagate down (non-evanescence) regions of a metallic cylindrical waveguide. In this paper we construct analogous non-dispersive waves propagating along coaxial cables. Such new solutions, in general, consist in trains of (undistorted) Superluminal "X-shaped" pulses. Particular attention is paid to the construction of finite total energy solutions. Any results of this kind may find application in the other fields in which an essenti…
We present the design, fabrication, and characterization of a planar silicon photonic crystal cavity in which large position-squared optomechanical coupling is realized. The device consists of a double-slotted photonic crystal structure in which motion of a central beam mode couples to two high-Q optical modes localized around each slot. Electrostatic tuning of the structure is used to controllably hybridize the optical modes into supermodes which couple in a quadratic fashion to the motion of the beam. From independent measurements of the anti-crossing of the optical modes and of the optical …
Controlling the interaction between localized optical and mechanical excitations has recently become possible following advances in micro- and nano-fabrication techniques. To date, most experimental studies of optomechanics have focused on measurement and control of the mechanical subsystem through its interaction with optics, and have led to the experimental demonstration of dynamical back-action cooling and optical rigidity of the mechanical system. Conversely, the optical response of these systems is also modified in the presence of mechanical interactions, leading to strong nonlinear effec…
