We report on the state-selective detection of near-dissociation ultracold KRb molecules in the ground $X^1Σ^+$ state and the metastable $a^3Σ^+$ state. The molecules are produced by photoassociation of ultracold atoms followed by radiative decay into high vibrational levels of the $X$ and $a$ states. Detection utilizes resonance-enhanced one-color two-photon ionization, followed by time-of-flight mass spectroscopy. Scanning the detection laser frequency over the range 582-625 nm, we observe transitions from the $v''$=86-92 levels of the $X$ state, which are bound by up to 30 cm$^{-1}$, and the $v''$=17-23 levels of the $a$ state, which are also bound by up to 30 cm$^{-1}$. The measured vibrational spacings are in excellent agreement with those previously measured and those calculated from the relevant potential curves. Relative vibrational populations are also consistent with Franck-Condon factors for decay from the photoassociated levels.
We have produced ultracold heteronuclear KRb molecules by the process of photoassociation in a two-species magneto-optical trap. Following decay of the photoassociated KRb*, the molecules are detected using two-photon ionization and time-of-flight mass spectroscopy of KRb$^+$. A portion of the metastable triplet molecules thus formed are magnetically trapped. Photoassociative spectra down to 91 cm$^{-1}$ below the K(4$s$) + Rb (5$p_{1/2}$) asymptote have been obtained. We have made assignments to all eight of the attractive Hund's case (c) KRb* potential curves in this spectral region.
The transfer of weakly bound KRb molecules from levels just below the dissociation threshold into the vibrational ground state with shaped laser pulses is studied. Optimal control theory is employed to calculate the pulses. The complexity of modelling the molecular structure is successively increased in order to study the effects of the long-range behavior of the excited state potential, resonant spin-orbit coupling and singlet-triplet mixing.
We propose an experimentally realizable scheme to produce triatomic ultralong-range Rydberg molecules (TURM), formed in ultracold KRb traps. A near resonant coupling of the non-zero quantum defect Rydberg levels with the KRb molecule in N=0 and N=2 rotational levels, is engineered which exploits the unique Rydberg electron-molecule anisotropic dipole interaction. This near resonant coupling enhances the TURM binding and produces favorable Franck-Condon factors. Schemes for both postassium and rubidium excitations are demonstrated.
We consider ultracold collisions of polar molecules confined in a one dimensional optical lattice. Using a quantum scattering formalism and a frame transformation method, we calculate elastic and chemical quenching rate constants for fermionic molecules. Taking KRb molecules as a prototype, we find that the rate of quenching collisions is enhanced at zero electric field as the confinement is increased, but that this rate is suppressed when the electric field is turned on. For molecules with 500 nK of collision energy, for realistic molecular densities, and for achievable experimental electric …
Ultracold collisions of cold atoms or molecules make the bound states of the collision complex formed from the two colliding species accessible for control and manipulation of the cold species or the complex. Such resonances are best treated by a resonant scattering theory, which in the ultracold domain can take advantage of the properties of the long-range potential and the methods of multichannel quantum defect theory. Coupled channels calculations on the threshold scattering states and bound states of the 40K87Rb molecule illustrate the ideas and methodology of quantum defect theory using t…
We report continuous direct photoassociative formation of ultracold KRb molecules in the lowest vibrational levels $(v"=0 -10)$ of the electronic ground state $(X ^1Σ^+)$, starting from $^{39}$K and $^{85}$Rb atoms in a magneto-optical trap. The process exploits a newfound resonant coupling between the $2(1), v'=165$ and $4(1), v'=61$ levels, which exhibit an almost equal admixture of the uncoupled eigenstates. The production rate of the $X^1Σ^+$ ($v"$=0) level is estimated to be $5\times10^3$ molecules/sec.
We propose and experimentally investigate a scheme for narrow-line cooling of KRb molecules in the rovibrational ground state. We show that the spin-forbidden $\mathrm{X^1Σ^+} \rightarrow \mathrm{b^3Π_{0^+}}$ transition of KRb is ideal for realizing narrow-line laser cooling of molecules because it has highly diagonal Franck-Condon factors and narrow linewidth. In order to confirm the prediction, we performed the optical and microwave spectroscopy of ultracold $^{41}$K$^{87}$Rb molecules, and determined the linewidth ($2π\times$ 4.9(4) kHz) and Franck-Condon factors for the $\mathrm{X^1Σ^+} (v…
Rapid progress in atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) physics techniques enabled the creation of ultracold samples of molecular species and opened opportunities to explore chemistry in the ultralow temperature regime. In particular, both the external and internal quantum degrees of freedom of the reactant atoms and molecules are controlled, allowing studies that explored the role of the long range potential in ultracold reactions. The kinetics of these reactions have typically been determined using the loss of reactants as proxies. To extend such studies into the short-range, we developed an …
Femtochemistry techniques have been instrumental in accessing the short time scales necessary to probe transient intermediates in chemical reactions. Here we take the contrasting approach of prolonging the lifetime of an intermediate by preparing reactant molecules in their lowest ro-vibronic quantum state at ultralow temperatures, thereby drastically reducing the number of exit channels accessible upon their mutual collision. Using ionization spectroscopy and velocity-map imaging of a trapped gas of potassium-rubidium molecules at a temperature of 500~nK, we directly observe reactants, interm…
How does a chemical reaction proceed at ultralow temperatures? Can simple quantum mechanical rules such as quantum statistics, single scattering partial waves, and quantum threshold laws provide a clear understanding for the molecular reactivity under a vanishing collision energy? Starting with an optically trapped near quantum degenerate gas of polar $^{40}$K$^{87}$Rb molecules prepared in their absolute ground state, we report experimental evidence for exothermic atom-exchange chemical reactions. When these fermionic molecules are prepared in a single quantum state at a temperature of a few …
Advances in atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) physics techniques allowed the cooling of simple molecules down to the ultracold regime ($\lesssim$ 1 mK), and opened the opportunities to study chemical reactions with unprecedented levels of control. This review covers recent developments in studying bimolecular chemistry at ultralow temperatures. We begin with a brief overview of methods for producing, manipulating, and detecting ultracold molecules. We then survey experimental works that exploit the controllability of ultracold molecules to probe and modify their long-range interactions. Fur…
Compared to purely atomic collisions, ultracold molecular collisions potentially support a much larger number of Fano-Feshbach resonances due to the enormous number of ro-vibrational states available. In fact, for alkali-metal dimers we find that the resulting density of resonances cannot be resolved at all, even on the sub-$μ$K temperature scale of ultracold experiments. As a result, all observables become averaged over many resonances and can effectively be described by simpler, non-resonant scattering calculations. Two particular examples are discussed: non-chemically reactive RbCs and chem…
We predict the existence of a class of ultracold giant molecules formed from trapped ultracold Rydberg atoms and polar molecules. The interaction which leads to the formation of such molecules is the anisotropic charge-dipole interaction ($a/R^2$). We show that prominent candidate molecules such as KRb and deuterated hydroxyl (OD) should bind to Rydberg rubidium atoms, with energies $E_b\simeq 5-25$ GHz at distances $R\simeq 0.1-1 \ μ$m. These molecules form in double wells, mimicking chiral molecules, with each well containing a particular dipole orientation. We prepare a set of correlated dr…
We explore one-dimensional (1-D) samples of ultracold polar molecules with attractive dipole-dipole interactions and show the existence of a repulsive barrier due to a strong quadrupole interaction between molecules. This barrier can stabilize a gas of ultracold KRb molecules and even lead to long-range wells supporting bound states between molecules. The properties of these wells can be controlled by external electric fields, allowing the formation of long polymer-like chains of KRb, and studies of quantum phase transitions by varying the effective interaction between molecules. We discuss th…
We explore the feasibility of optically forming long-range tetratomic and larger polyatomic molecules in their ground electronic state from ultracold pairs of polar molecules aligned by external fields. Depending on the relative orientation of the interacting diatomic molecules, we find that a tetratomic can be formed either as a weakly bound complex in a very extended halo state or as a pure long-range molecule composed of collinear or nearly-collinear diatomic molecules. The latter is a novel type of tetratomic molecule comprised of two diatomic molecules bound at long intermolecular range a…
We investigate collisional loss in an ultracold mixture of $^{40}$K$^{87}$Rb molecules and $^{87}$Rb atoms, where chemical reactions between the two species are energetically forbidden. Through direct detection of the KRb$_{2}^{*}$ intermediate complexes formed from atom-molecule collisions, we show that a $1064$ nm laser source used for optical trapping of the sample can efficiently deplete the complex population via photo-excitation, an effect which can explain the universal two-body loss observed in the mixture. By monitoring the time-evolution of the KRb$_{2}^{*}$ population after a sudden…
We consider ultracold, chemically reactive scattering collisions of the diatomic molecules KRb. When two such molecules collide in an ultracold gas, we find that they are energetically forbidden from reacting to form the trimer species K$_2$Rb or Rb$_2$K, hence can only react via the bond-swapping reaction 2KRb $\to$ K$_2$ + Rb$_2$. Moreover, the tiny energy released in this reaction can in principle be set to zero by applying electric or microwave fields, implying a means of controlling the available reaction channels in a chemical reaction.
Chemical reaction rates often depend strongly on stereodynamics, namely the orientation and movement of molecules in three-dimensional space. An ultracold molecular gas, with a temperature below 1 uK, provides a highly unusual regime for chemistry, where polar molecules can easily be oriented using an external electric field and where, moreover, the motion of two colliding molecules is strictly quantized. Recently, atom-exchange reactions were observed in a trapped ultracold gas of KRb molecules. In an external electric field, these exothermic and barrierless bimolecular reactions, KRb+KRb -> …
We consider ultracold collisions of ground-state, heteronuclear alkali dimers that are susceptible to four-center chemical reactions 2 AB -> A2 + B2 even at sub-microKelvin temperature. These reactions depend strongly on species, temperature, electric field, and confinement in an optical lattice. We calculate ab initio van der Walls coefficients for these interactions, and use a quantum formalism to study the scattering properties of such molecules under an external electric field and optical lattice. We also apply a quantum threshold model to explore the dependence of reaction rates on the va…
We report the creation and characterization of a near quantum-degenerate gas of polar $^{40}$K-$^{87}$Rb molecules in their absolute rovibrational ground state. Starting from weakly bound heteronuclear KRb Feshbach molecules, we implement precise control of the molecular electronic, vibrational, and rotational degrees of freedom with phase-coherent laser fields. In particular, we coherently transfer these weakly bound molecules across a 125 THz frequency gap in a single step into the absolute rovibrational ground state of the electronic ground potential. Phase coherence between lasers involved…
Experimental techniques to manipulate cold molecules have seen great development in recent years. The precision measurements of cold molecules are expected to give insights into fundamental physics. We use a rovibrationally pure sample of ultracold KRb molecules to improve the measurement on the stability of electron-to-proton mass ratio ($μ= \frac{m_{\rm e}}{M_{\rm p}}$). The measurement is based upon a large sensitivity coefficient of the molecular spectroscopy, which utilizes a transition between nearly a degenerate pair of vibrational levels each associated with a different electronic pote…
We report the observation and analysis of the $3\,^3Π_Ω$ double-minimum electronic excited state of $^{39}$K$^{85}$Rb. The spin-orbit components ($0^{+}, 0^{-}, 1$ and 2) of this state are investigated based on potentials developed from the available \emph{ab initio} potential curves. We have assigned the vibrational levels $v'=2-11$ of the $3\,^3Π_{1,2}$ potentials and $v'=2-12$ of the $3\,^3Π_{0^{+/-}}$ potential. We compare our experimental observations of the $3\,^3Π_Ω$ state with predictions based on theoretical potentials. The observations are based on resonance enhanced multiphoton ioni…
Promising pathways for photoassociative formation of ultracold heteronuclear alkali metal dimers in their lowest rovibronic levels (denoted X(0,0)) are examined using high quality ab initio calculations of potential energy curves currently available. A promising pathway for KRb, involving the resonant coupling of the $2 ^1Π$ and $1 ^1Π$ states just below the lowest excited asymptote (K($4s$)+Rb($5p_{1/2}$)), is found to occur also for RbCs and less promisingly for KCs as well. The resonant coupling of the $3 ^1 Σ^+ $ and $1 ^1Π$ states, also just below the lowest excited asymptote, is found to…
Analytic expressions describe universal elastic and reactive rates of quasi-two-dimensional and quasi-one-dimensional collisions of highly reactive ultracold molecules interacting by a van der Waals potential. Exact and approximate calculations for the example species of KRb show that stability and evaporative cooling can be realized for spin-polarized fermions at moderate dipole and trapping strength, whereas bosons or unlike fermions require significantly higher dipole or trapping strengths.
We investigate the ultracold collisions of rotationally excited dipolar molecules in free-space, taking the hetero-nuclear bi-alkali molecule of KRb as an example. We show that we can sharply tune the elastic, inelastic and reactive rate coefficients of lossy molecular collisions when a second rotationally excited colliding channel crosses the threshold of the initial colliding channel, with the help of an applied electric field, as found by Avdeenkov et al. for non-lossy molecules [Phys. Rev. A 73, 022707 (2006)]. We can increase or decrease the loss processes whether the second channel is ab…
Ultracold metastable RbCs molecules are observed in a double species MOT through photoassociation near the Rb(5S$_{1/2}$)+Cs(6P$_{3/2}$) dissociation limit followed by radiative stabilization. The molecules are formed in their lowest triplet electronic state and are detected by resonant enhanced two-photon ionization through the previously unobserved $(3)^{3}Π\leftarrow a^{3}Σ^{+}$ band. The large rotational structure of the observed photoassociation lines is assigned to the lowest vibrational levels of the $0^+,0^-$ excited states correlated to the Rb(5P$_{1/2}$)+Cs(6S$_{1/2}$) dissociation l…
Heteronuclear dimers are of significant interest to experiments seeking to exploit ultracold polar molecules in a number of novel ways including precision measurement, quantum computing, and quantum simulation. We calculate highly accurate Born-Oppenheimer total energies and electric dipole moments as a function of internuclear separation for two such dimers, LiSr and KRb. We apply fully-correlated, high-accuracy quantum Monte Carlo methods for evaluating these molecular properties in a many-body framework. We use small-core effective potentials combined with multi-reference Slater-Jastrow tri…
The formation of ultracold metastable RbCs molecules is observed in a double species magneto-optical trap through photoassociation below the ^85Rb(5S_1/2)+^133Cs(6P_3/2) dissociation limit followed by spontaneous emission. The molecules are detected by resonance enhanced two-photon ionization. Using accurate quantum chemistry calculations of the potential energy curves and transition dipole moment, we interpret the observed photoassociation process as occurring at short internuclear distance, in contrast with most previous cold atom photoassociation studies. The vibrational levels excited by p…
This chapter summarizes the properties of near-threshold molecular states that can be formed from ultracold atoms. The properties of the states for a single potential are characterized for different partial waves using the concepts of quantum defect theory for a van der Waals potential. Examples are given for various isotopes of the Yb_2 molecule. Magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances or photoassociation resonances are characterized by the multichannel version of the theory. Examples of the latter are given for the KRb molecule.
We show that the interaction of polar alkali dimers in the quintet spin state leads to the formation of a deeply bound reaction complex. The reaction complex can decompose adiabatically into homonuclear alkali dimers (for all molecules except KRb) and into alkali trimers (for all molecules). We show that there are no barriers for these chemical reactions. This means that all alkali dimers in the $a^3Σ^+$ state are chemically unstable at ultracold temperature, and the use of an optical lattice to segregate the molecules and suppress losses may be necessary. In addition, we calculate the minimum…
We present a time-independent quantum formalism to describe the dynamics of molecules with permanent electric dipole moments in a two-dimensional confined geometry such as a one-dimensional optical lattice, in the presence of an electric field. Bose/Fermi statistics and selection rules play a crucial role in the dynamics. As examples, we compare the dynamics of confined fermionic and bosonic polar KRb molecules under different confinements and electric fields. We show how chemical reactions can be suppressed, either by a "statistical suppression" which applies for fermions at small electric fi…
We study ultracold long-range collisions of heteronuclear alkali-metal dimers with a reservoir gas of alkali-metal Rydberg atoms in a two-photon laser excitation scheme. In a low density regime where molecules remain outside the Rydberg orbits of the reservoir atoms, we show that the two-photon photoassociation (PA) of the atom-molecule pair into a long-range bound trimer state is efficient over a broad range of atomic Rydberg channels. As a case study, we obtain the PA lineshapes for the formation of trimers composed of KRb molecules in the rovibrational ground state and excited Rb atoms in t…
We report on the production of ultracold heteronuclear YbLi* molecules in a dual-species magneto-optical trap by photoassociation (PA). The formation of the electronically excited molecules close to dissociation was observed by trap loss spectroscopy. We find 4 rovibrational states within a range of $250\,$GHz below the Yb($^1S_0$) + Li($^2P_{1/2}$) asymptote and observe isotopic PA line shifts in mixtures of $^6$Li with $^{174}$Yb, $^{172}$Yb, and $^{176}$Yb. We also describe our theoretical ab-initio calculation for the relevant electronic potentials and utilize it to analyze and identify th…
We demonstrate that a near-dissociation photoassociation resonance can be used to create a deeply bound molecular sample of ultracold NaCs. To probe the resulting vibrational distribution of the sample, we use a new technique that can be applied to any ultracold molecular system. We utilize a tunable pulsed dye laser to produce efficient spectroscopic scans ($\sim700$ cm$^{-1}$ at a time) in which we observe the $1^{1} Σ^{+}\rightarrow 2^{1}Σ^{+}-2^{3}Π$ vibrational progression, as well as the dissociation limit to the Cs 6$^{2}$P$_{3/2}$ asymptote. We assign $1^{1} Σ^{+}$$(\emph{v}$ = 4, 5, 6…
We study the association and dissociation dynamics of weakly bound heteronuclear Feshbach molecules using transverse RF-fields for expected parameters accessible through the microgravity environment of NASA's Cold Atom Laboratory (CAL) aboard the International Space Station, including temperatures at or below nK and atomic densities as low as $10^8$/cm$^3$. We show that under such conditions, thermal and loss effects can be greatly suppressed resulting in high efficiency in both association and dissociation of Feshbach molecules with mean size exceeding 10$^4a_0$, and allowing for the coherenc…
We recently reported the formation of ultracold LiCs molecules in the rovibrational ground state X1Sigma+,v''=0,J''=0 [J. Deiglmayr et al., PRL 101, 133004 (2008)]. Here we discuss details of the experimental setup and present a thorough analysis of the photoassociation step including the photoassociation line shape. We predict the distribution of produced ground state molecules using accurate potential nergy curves combined with an ab-initio dipole transition moment and compare this prediction with experimental ionization spectra. Additionally we improve the value of the dissociation energy f…
It has long been expected that quantum degenerate gases of molecules would open access to a wide range of phenomena in molecular and quantum sciences. However, the very complexity that makes ultracold molecules so enticing has made reaching degeneracy an outstanding experimental challenge over the past decade. We now report the production of a Fermi degenerate gas of ultracold polar molecules of potassium--rubidium (KRb). Through coherent adiabatic association in a deeply degenerate mixture of a rubidium Bose-Einstein condensate and a potassium Fermi gas, we produce molecules at temperatures b…
Progress in ultracold experiments with polar molecules requires a clear understanding of their interactions and reactivity at ultra-low collisional energies. Two important theoretical steps in this process are the characterization of interaction potentials between molecules and the modeling of reactive scattering mechanism. Here, we report on the {\it abinitio} calculation of isotropic and anisotropic van der Waals interaction potentials for polar KRb and RbCs colliding with each other or with ultracold atoms. Based on these potentials and two short-range scattering parameters we then develop …
The results of a theoretical investigation of an ultracold, neutral plasma composed of equal mass positive and negative charges are reported. In our simulations, the plasma is created by the fast dissociation of a neutral particle. The temperature of the plasma is controlled by the relative energy of the dissociation. We studied the early time evolution of this system where the initial energy was tuned so that the plasma is formed in the strongly coupled regime. In particular, we present results on the temperature evolution and three body recombination. In the weakly coupled regime, we studied…
We report on a high-resolution spectroscopic survey of ${}^{6}\textrm{Li}{}^{40}\textrm{K}$ molecules near the $2\textrm{S}+4\textrm{P}$ dissociation threshold and produce a fully empirical representation for the $\textrm{B}^{1}Π$ potential by connecting available short- and long-range data. The purpose is to identify a suitable intermediate state for a coherent Raman transfer to the absolute ground state, and the creation of a molecular gas with dipolar interactions. Starting from weakly bound ultracold Feshbach molecules, the transition frequencies to twenty-six vibrational states are determ…
Controlling the pathways and outcomes of reactions is a broadly pursued goal in chemistry. In gas phase reactions, this is typically achieved by manipulating the properties of the reactants, including their translational energy, orientation, and internal quantum state. In contrast, here we influence the pathway of a reaction via its intermediate complex, which is generally too short-lived to be affected by external processes. In particular, the ultracold preparation of potassium-rubidium (KRb) reactants leads to a long-lived intermediate complex (K$_2$Rb$_2^*$), which allows us to steer the re…
Pulsed laser excitation of a dense ultracold Cs vapor has been used to study the pairwise interactions between Cs atoms excited to $n$p$_{3/2}$ Rydberg states of principal quantum numbers in the range $n=22-36$. Molecular resonances were observed that correspond to excitation of Rydberg-atom-pair states correlated not only to the $n$p$_{3/2}+n$p$_{3/2}$ dissociation asymptotes, but also to $n$s$_{1/2}+(n+1)$s$_{1/2}$, $n$s$_{1/2}+n'$f$_{j}$, and $(n-4)$f$_{j}+(n-3)$f$_{j}$ $(j=5/2,7/2)$ dissociation asymptotes. These pair resonances are interpreted as arising from dipole-dipole, and higher-ord…
This article reviews the current state of the art in the field of cold and ultracold molecules and demonstrates that chemical reactions, inelastic collisions and dissociation of molecules at subKelvin temperatures can be manipulated with external electric or magnetic fields. The creation of ultracold molecules may allow for spectroscopy measurements with extremely high precision and tests of fundamental symmetries of nature, quantum computation with molecules as qubits, and controlled chemistry. The probability of chemical reactions and collisional energy transfer can be very large at temperat…
We report the binding energy of $^{87}$Rb$^{133}$Cs molecules in their rovibrational ground state measured using an offset-free optical frequency comb based on difference frequency generation technology. We create molecules in the absolute ground state using stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) with a transfer efficiency of 88\%. By measuring the absolute frequencies of our STIRAP lasers, we find the energy-level difference from an initial weakly-bound Feshbach state to the rovibrational ground state with a resolution of 5 kHz over an energy-level difference of more than 114 THz; this l…
We investigate theoretically the suppression of two-body losses when the on-site loss rate is larger than all other energy scales in a lattice. This work quantitatively explains the recently observed suppression of chemical reactions between two rotational states of fermionic KRb molecules confined in one-dimensional tubes with a weak lattice along the tubes [Yan et al., Nature 501, 521-525 (2013)]. New loss rate measurements performed for different lattice parameters but under controlled initial conditions allow us to show that the loss suppression is a consequence of the combined effects of …
We perform photoassociation spectroscopy in an ultracold $^{23}$Na-$^6$Li mixture to study the $c^3Σ^+$ excited triplet molecular potential. We observe 50 vibrational states and their substructure to an accuracy of 20 MHz, and provide line strength data from photoassociation loss measurements. An analysis of the vibrational line positions using near-dissociation expansions and a full potential fit is presented. This is the first observation of the $c^3Σ^+$ potential, as well as photoassociation in the NaLi system.
Ultracold polar molecules offer the possibility of exploring quantum gases with interparticle interactions that are strong, long-range, and spatially anisotropic. This is in stark contrast to the dilute gases of ultracold atoms, which have isotropic and extremely short-range, or "contact", interactions. The large electric dipole moment of polar molecules can be tuned with an external electric field; this provides unique opportunities such as control of ultracold chemical reactions, quantum information processing, and the realization of novel quantum many-body systems. In spite of intense exper…
We report on photoassociation (PA) spectroscopy of a degenerate Fermi gas of $^{173}$Yb atoms near the dissociation limit of the spin-forbidden ${^1}S_0-{^3}P_1$ intercombination transition. An atom-loss spectrum is measured from a trapped sample for a spectral range down to $-1$~GHz with respect to the $f=5/2 \rightarrow f^\prime=7/2$ atomic resonance. The spectrum shows eighty PA resonances, revealing the high nuclear spin nature of the system. We investigate the Zeeman effect on the spectrum near a detuning of $-0.8$~GHz, where we examine the quantum numbers of the Zeeman levels using vario…
We propose a new type of Feshbach resonance occurring when two different ultracold atoms in their ground state undergo an s-wave collision in the presence of a continuous-wave laser light. The atoms collide in the dissociation continuum of the molecular electronic ground state which is coupled by the light to a rovibrational level of the same electronic ground state: we name this a Laser-Assisted Self-Induced Feshbach Resonance (LASIFR). This mechanism, valid for all polar molecules, is analyzed on the example of ultracold 87Rb and 84Sr atoms, for which the laser frequency falls in the THz ran…
We present spectra of ultracold $^7$Li$^{85}$Rb molecules in their electronic ground state formed by spontaneous decay of weakly bound photoassociated molecules. Beginning with atoms in a dual species magneto-optical trap (MOT), weakly bound molecules are formed in the 4(1) electronic state, which corresponds to the B$^1Π$ state at short range. These molecules spontaneously decay to the electronic ground state and we use resonantly enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) to determine the vibrational population distribution in the electronic ground states after spontaneous emission. Many of the…
Weakly bound molecules have physical properties without atomic analogues, even as the bond length approaches dissociation. In particular, the internal symmetries of homonuclear diatomic molecules result in formation of two-body superradiant and subradiant excited states. While superradiance has been demonstrated in a variety of systems, subradiance is more elusive due to the inherently weak interaction with the environment. Here we characterize the properties of deeply subradiant molecular states with intrinsic quality factors exceeding $10^{13}$ via precise optical spectroscopy with the longe…
Studying chemical reactions on a state-to-state level tests and improves our fundamental understanding of chemical processes. For such investigations it is convenient to make use of ultracold atomic and molecular reactants as they can be prepared in well defined internal and external quantum states$^{1-4}$. In general, even cold reactions have many possible final product states$^{5-15}$ and reaction channels are therefore hard to track individually$^{16}$. In special cases, however, only a single reaction channel is essentially participating, as observed e.g. in the recombination of two atoms …
We present a simple method for determination of absolute vibrational numbering of isolated near dissociation levels in diatomic molecules, usually observed in cold physics experiments. The method is based on the isotope shift and works even when energies of only two levels from one isotopologue and one level from another isotopologue have been measured. It is demonstrated on data from recently reported precise measurements of binding energies of levels lying close to the dissociation limits in ultracold Yb2, CsYb, RbSr and RbYb molecules. Its predictions agree with these of much more elaborate…
Spontaneous avalanche to plasma splits the core of an ellipsoidal Rydberg gas of nitric oxide. Ambipolar expansion first quenches the electron temperature of this core plasma. Then, long-range, resonant charge transfer from ballistic ions to frozen Rydberg molecules in the wings of the ellipsoid quenches the centre-of-mass ion/Rydberg molecule velocity distribution. This sequence of steps gives rise to a remarkable mechanics of self-assembly, in which the kinetic energy of initially formed hot electrons and ions drives an observed separation of plasma volumes. These dynamics adiabatically sequ…
