The radio-frequency power radiated from laser-target plasmas in a vacuum can be orders of magnitude greater than expected from such sources that have a negligible electric dipole moment. A model combining the Tidman-Stamper circuit model of a laser-target plasma with the theory of radiation from currents immersed in plasmas, however, predicts scaling of electric-dipole power radiated from laser plasmas in agreement with experiments.
Transient interaction of counter-streaming super-sonic plasma flows in dipole magnetic dipole is studied in laboratory experiment. First quasi-stationary flow is produced by teta-pinch and forms a magnetosphere around the magnetic dipole while laser beams focused at the surface of the dipole cover launch second explosive plasma expanding from inner dipole region outward. Laser plasma is energetic enough to disrupt magnetic field and to sweep through the background plasma for large distances. Probe measurements showed that far from the initially formed magnetosphere laser plasma carries within …
When an ArF excimer laser beam was focused in a high pressure argon gas from 50 to 130 atm, the plasma development is observed by streak camera from side window of chamber. The high pressure ArF laser plasma develops symmetrically and the plasma produced by ArF excimer laser hardly develops as compared with the plasma produced by XeCl. The photon energy of ArF laser light is higher than the XeCl laser. The transmittance of ArF laser light was measured. Almost all the laser light is transmitted as the frequency of laser light is higher than the plasma frequency, and the energy of laser light is…
The concept of a hybrid laser wakefield/direct laser plasma accelerator is proposed. Relativistic electrons undergoing resonant betatron oscillations inside the plasma bubble created by a laser pulse are accelerated by gaining energy directly from the laser pulse and from its plasma wake. The resulting bifurcated phase space of self-injected plasma electrons contains a population that experiences wakefield acceleration beyond the standard one-dimensional limit because of the multi-dimensional nature of its motion that reduces the phase slippage between the electrons and the wake.
Interaction of ultera-short laser pulses with a dense cold plasma is investigated. Due to high density, of plasma, quantum effects such that Bohm potential and quantum pressure should be considered. The results reveal that electron density function modulated by laser light in the propagation direction. This modulation can be controlled by amplitude of laser intensity and plasma effective parameters. For some special values of involved parameters electron density become localized in quenches spatially. Increasing the quantum coefficient tends to rarefy the high electron density regions, since t…
Incoherent Thomson scattering is a non-intrusive technique commonly used for measuring local plasma density. Within low-density, low-temperature plasma's and for sufficient laser intensity, the laser may perturb the local electron density via the ponderomotive force, causing the diagnostic to become intrusive and leading to erroneous results. A theoretical model for this effect is validated numerically via kinetic simulations of a quasi-neutral plasma using the Particle-in-Cell technique.
The laser induced plasma in liquid hasn't been studied enough. In liquid, the laser induced plasma may be able to resolve the hazardous material called the environment material. Then, the plasma produced in liquid by the laser light is studied and the plasma development is observed by a streak camera. The ultra pure water or the ultra pure water with a melted NaCl is used as a test liquid. The liquid plasma is produced by the fundamental wave of YAG laser. When NaCl concentration is varied, the plasma development behavior is obserbed by streak camera. The liquid plasma develops backward. The p…
Stimulated Raman and Brillouin scattering of laser radiation in a plasma corona are outstanding issues for the inertial confinement fusion. Stimulated Raman scattering may produce absorption of a significant fraction of laser energy near the plasma quarter critical density associated with plasma cavitation and generation of hot electrons. By contrast, stimulated Brillouin scattering operates in a lower density plasma and prevents the laser light access to the absorption region. In the present paper, we report the results of analysis of competition of these two parametric instabilities with a s…
{A simple electrodynamic model is developed to define plasma-field structures in self-consistent ultra-relativistic laser-plasma interactions when the radiation reaction effects come into play. An exact analysis of a circularly polarized laser interacting with plasmas is presented. We define fundamental notations such as nonlinear dielectric permittivity, ponderomotive and dissipative forces acting in a plasma. Plasma-field structures arising during the ultra-relativisitc interactions are also calculated. Based on these solutions we show that about 50% of laser energy can be converted into gam…
Understanding the agglomeration of dust particles in complex plasmas requires a knowledge of the basic properties such as the net electrostatic charge and dipole moment of the dust. In this study, dust aggregates are formed from gold coated mono-disperse spherical melamine-formaldehyde monomers in a radio-frequency (rf) argon discharge plasma. The behavior of observed dust aggregates is analyzed both by studying the particle trajectories and by employing computer models examining 3D structures of aggregates and their interactions and rotations as induced by torques arising from their dipole mo…
The electrostatic stability of electron-positron plasmas is investigated in the point-dipole and Z-pinch limits of dipole geometry. The kinetic dispersion relation for sub-bounce-frequency instabilities is derived and solved. For the zero-Debye-length case, the stability diagram is found to exhibit singular behavior. However, when the Debye length is non-zero, a fluid mode appears, which resolves the observed singularity, and also demonstrates that both the temperature and density gradients can drive instability. It is concluded that a finite Debye length is necessary to determine the stabilit…
Plasma dipole oscillation (PDO) depicted as harmonic motion of a spatially localized block of electrons has, until now, been hypothetical. In practice, the plasma oscillation occurs always as a part of a plasma wave. Studies on radiation burst from plasmas have focused only on coupling of the plasma wave and electromagnetic wave. Here we show that a very-high-field PDO can be generated by the electrons trapped in a moving train of potential wells. The electrons riding on the potential train coherently construct a local dipole moment by charge separation. The subsequent PDO is found to persist …
Strong magnetic fields at plasma-plasma interfaces can be naturally produced in laser-plasma interactions. Using theoretical analysis and fully three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we demonstrate that relativistic topological waves can be generated via Cherenkov and Doppler resonances in the interaction of intense femtosecond laser pulses with near-critical-density plasmas. At the self-magnetized plasma-plasma interface, a new slow-wave branch appears. Its phase velocity is much smaller than the group velocity of the laser pulse and the electron beam velocity. Therefore, the Cherenk…
In this paper we study the influence of the magnetised thermal conductivity on the propagation of a nanosecond $10^{14} \mathrm{Wcm}^{-2}$ laser in an underdense plasma by performing simulations of a paraxial model laser in a plasma with the full Braginskii magnetised transport coefficients. Analytic theory and simulations show the shortening of the self-focal length of a laser beam in a plasma as a result of the reduction of the plasma thermal conductivity in a magnetic field. Furthermore the filamentation of a laser via the thermal mechanism is found to have an increased spatial growth rate …
The acceleration of ions in the interaction of high intensity laser pulses with overdense plasmas is investigated with particle-in-cell simulations. For circular polarization of the laser pulses, high-density ion bunches moving into the plasma are generated at the laser-plasma interaction surface. A simple analytical model accounts for the numerical observations and provides scaling laws for the ion bunch energy and generation time as a function of pulse intensity and plasma density.
We propose a new approach to high-intensity laser-driven electron acceleration in a plasma. Here, we demonstrate that a plasma wave generated by a stimulated forward-scattering of an incident laser pulse can be in a longest acceleration phase with an incident laser wave. This is why the plasma wave has the maximum amplification coefficient which is determined by the breakdown (overturn) electric field in which the acceleration of injected relativistic beam electrons occurs. We estimate qualitatively the acceleration parameters of relativistic electrons in the field of a plasma wave generated a…
We analyze the motion of the plasma critical layer by two different processes in the relativistic-electron laser-plasma interaction regime ($a_0>1$). The differences are highlighted when the critical layer ions are stationary in contrast to when they move with it. Controlling the speed of the plasma critical layer in this regime is essential for creating low-$β$ traveling acceleration structures of sufficient laser-excited potential for laser ion accelerators (LIA). In Relativistically Induced Transparency Acceleration (RITA) scheme the heavy plasma-ions are fixed and only trace-density light-…
Propagation distances of intense laser pulses and high-charge electron beams through the plasma are, respectively, limited by diffraction and self-deceleration. This imposes severe constraints on the performance of the two major advanced accelerator concepts: laser and plasma wakefield accelerators. Using numerical simulations, we demonstrate that when the two beams co-propagate in the plasma, they can interact synergistically and extend each other's travel distances. The key interactions responsible for the synergy are found to be laser channeling by the electron bunch, and direct laser accel…
The upcoming $10-100$ petawatt laser facilities may deliver laser pulses with unprecedented intensity of $10^{22}-10^{25}\rm~W cm^{-2}$, which can trigger various nonlinear quantum electrodynamic processes in plasma. For effective laser plasma interactions at such high intensity levels, guided laser propagation is critical. However, this becomes impossible via usual plasma electron response to laser fields due to electron cavitation by the laser ponderomotive force. Here, we find that ion response to the laser fields may effectively guide laser propagation at such high intensity levels. The co…
Propagation of right-hand circularly polarized laser into highly magnetized over-dense collisional plasma is analytically studied from basic equations. Highly magnetized plasma with density of 10^23 cm^-3 is efficiently heated from 100 eV to 1 keV within depth of around 20 μ{m} in one nanosecond by Nd:YAG laser with moderate irradiance of around 10^14 Wcm^-2.
The ponderomotive perturbation in the interaction region of laser radiation with a low density and low-temperature plasma is considered. Estimates of the perturbation magnitude are determined from the plasma parameters, geometry, intensity and wavelength of laser radiation. It is shown that ponderomotive perturbations can lead to large errors in the electron density when measured using Thomson scattering.
Laser-plasma accelerators have become compact sources of ultrashort electron bunches at energies up to the gigaelectronvolt range thanks to the remarkable progress made over the past decade. A direct application of these electron bunches is the production of short pulse x-ray radiation sources. In this letter, we study a fully optically driven x-ray source based on the combination of a laser-plasma accelerator and a plasma wave undulator. The longitudinal electric field of a laser-generated plasma wave is used to wiggle electrons transversally. The period of this plasma undulator being equal t…
We study ion acceleration mechanisms in laser-plasma interactions using neutron spectroscopy. We consider different types of ion-collision mechanisms in the plasma, which cause the angular anisotropy of the observed neutron spectra. These include the collisions between an ion in the plasma and an ion in the target, and the collisions between two ions in the hot plasma. By analyzing the proton spectra, we suggest that the laser-generated plasma consists of at least two components, one of which collectively accelerated and can also produce anisotropy in the angular distribution of fusion neutron…
The classical nonlinear laser-plasma interaction theory is corrected. Given the effects of vacuum polarization (induced by extreme laser) as nonlinear media response, one-dimensional wave equations of a monochromatic laser field are derived from the Heisenberg-Euler Lagrangian density and a derivative correction with the first order quantum electrodynamic (QED) effects. A more suitable model to formulate the interactions of extreme laser and high-energy-density plasma is developed. In the results, the enhanced effect of vacuum polarization will be discussed and shown.
We explore the physics of electron acceleration in a plasma medium in an effective field theory framework. Employing a multiple Compton scattering mechanism, it is found that the acceleration can be sustained in such a medium so as to attain the energies up to the order of $O(100 \rm{MeV})$ within a centimeter. Also, the collimation and mono-energetic electron spectrum can be obtained by proper tuning of the plasma parameters with the photon frequency. The present work is potentially useful in understanding the physics of laser-plasma accelerators.
Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation results of sustained acceleration of electron-positron (e+e-) plasmas by comoving electromagnetic (EM) pulses are presented. When a thin slab of overdense e+e- plasma is irradiated with linear-polarized ultra-intense short laser pulses from both sides, the pulses are transmitted when the plasma is compressed to thinner than ~ 2 relativistic skin depths. A fraction of the plasma is then captured and efficiently accelerated by self-induced JxB forces. For 1 micron laser and 1021Wcm-2 intensity, the maximum energy exceeds GeV in a picosecond.
Relativistic electrons generated by the interaction of petawatt-class short laser pulses with solid targets can be used to generate bright X-rays via bremsstrahlung. The efficiency of laser energy transfer into these electrons depends on multiple parameters including the focused intensity and pre-plasma level. This paper reports experimental results from the interaction of a high intensity petawatt-class glass laser pulses with solid targets at a maximum intensity of $10^{19}$ W/cm$^2$. In-situ measurements of specularly reflected light are used to provide an upper bound of laser absorption an…
We present a new theoretical approach for collisional absorption of laser energy in dense plasmas which accommodates arbitrary frequencies and high intensities of the laser field. We establish a connection between laser absorption by inverse Bremstrahlung and the stopping power. This relation is then applied to include strong correlations beyond the mean field approach. The results show an excellent agreement with molecular dynamics simulations up to very high coupling strength.

The magnetic field generation by a relativistic laser light irradiated on a thin target at the oblique incidence is investigated using a two dimensional particle-in-cell simulation. The surface magnetic field inhibits the electron transport towards the inside plasma, when an incident angle exceeds the critical angle, which depends on the laser and plasma parameters.
The accelerating gradients in conventional linear accelerators are currently limited to 100 MV per meter. Plasma-based accelerators have the ability to sustain accelerating gradients which are several orders of magnitude greater than that obtained in conventionalaccelerators. Due to the rapid development of laser technology the laser-plasma-based accelerators are of great interest now. Over the past decade, successful experiments on laser wakefield acceleration of electrons in the plasma have confirmed the relevance of this acceleration. Evidently, the large accelerating gradients in the laser…
It is proposed to use apertures with large acceptance angles to reduce the integration time when studying the emissivity of laser induced plasmas by means of the Abel inversion method. The spatial resolution lost due to contributions of angled lines of sight to the intensity data collected along the plasma plume diameter is restored by a special numerical data processing. The procedure is meant for the laser induced plasma diagnostics and tomography when the integration time needed to achieve a reasonable signal to noise ratio exceeds a characteristic time scale of the plasma state variations …
In laser-plasma experiments, we observed that ion acceleration from the Coulomb explosion of the plasma channel bored by the laser, is prevented when multiple plasma instabilities such as filamentation and hosing, and nonlinear coherent structures (vortices/post-solitons) appear in the wake of an ultrashort laser pulse. The tailoring of the longitudinal plasma density ramp allows us to control the onset of these insabilities. We deduced that the laser pulse is depleted into these structures in our conditions, when a plasma at about 10% of the critical density exhibits a gradient on the order o…
One-dimensional steady-state plasma-field structures in overdense plasma are studied assuming that the electron temperature is uniform over plasma bulk and the ions are stationary. It is shown that there may exist solutions for electron distributions with cavitation regions in plasma under the action of ponderomotive force
In simulations of a 12.5PW laser (focused intensity I = 4x10^23W/cm^2) striking a solid aluminium target 10% of the laser energy is converted to gamma-rays. A dense electron-positron plasma is generated with a maximum density of 10^26/m^3; seven orders of magnitude denser than pure e-e+ plasmas generated with 1PW lasers. When the laser power is increased to 320PW (I = 10^25W/cm^2) 40% of the laser energy is converted to gamma-ray photons and 10% to electron-positron pairs. In both cases there is strong feedback between the QED emission processes and the plasma physics; the defining feature of …
It is demonstrated that targets with a broken rotational symmetry may facilitate generation of a strong axial (poloidal) magnetic field. An intense laser beam irradiating such a target creates intense electron currents carrying vorticity and producing strong spontaneous magnetic fields. Combined with a laser electron acceleration, such targets may be used for generation and guiding of magnetized, collimated particle or plasma beams.
Numerical simulations of laser-plasma interactions demonstrate the generation of axially polarized electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) that radiate away energy with a characteristic frequency determined by the plasma frequency, in the THz range for typical laser wakefield acceleration experiments. This is confirmed by full 2D electromagnetic particle-in-cell simulations, as well as by a ponderomotively-driven reduced model that captures the EMP generation essentials. When the laser's pulse length matches the plasma wavelength, that pulse's fractional energy losses to the wakefield are independent of…
Propagation and scattering of lasers present new phenomena and applications when the plasma medium becomes strongly magnetized. With mega-Gauss magnetic fields, scattering of optical lasers already becomes manifestly anisotropic. Special angles exist where coherent laser scattering is either enhanced or suppressed, as we demonstrate using a cold-fluid model. Consequently, by aiming laser beams at special angles, one may be able to optimize laser-plasma coupling in magnetized implosion experiments. In addition, magnetized scattering can be exploited to improve the performance of plasma-based la…
Self-organization of a long-lived structure is one of the remarkable characteristics of macroscopic systems governed by long-range interactions. In a homogeneous magnetic field, a non-neutral plasma creates a "thermal equilibrium" which is a Boltzmann distribution on a rigidly rotating frame. Here, we study how a non-neutral plasma self-organizes in inhomogeneous magnetic field; as a typical system we consider a dipole magnetic field. In this generalized setting, the plasma exhibits its fundamental mechanism that determines the relaxed state. The scale hierarchy of adiabatic invariants is the …
An emission tomography of laser-induced plasmas employed in the laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) requires long signal integration times during which the plasma cannot be considered stationary. To reduce the integration time, it is proposed to measure a plasma absorption in parallel rays with an aperture that collects light coming from large fractions of the plasma plume at each aperture position. The needed spatial resolution is achieved by a special numerical data processing. Another advantage of the proposed procedure is that inexpensive linear CCD or non-discrete (PMT, photodiode…
The success of direct laser-driven inertial confinement fusion (ICF) relies critically on the efficient coupling of laser light to plasma. At ignition scale, the absolute stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) instability can severely inhibit this coupling by redirecting and strongly depleting laser light. This Letter describes a new dynamic saturation regime of the absolute SRS instability. The saturation occurs when spatiotemporal fluctuations in the ion-acoustic density detune the instability resonance. The dynamic saturation mitigates the strong depletion of laser light and enhances its transmi…
In the presence of an external magnetic field, wake fields generated by a short laser pulse can propagate out of the plasma, and thereby provide information about the electron density profile. A method for reconstructing the density profile from a measured wake field spectrum is proposed and a numerical example is given. Finally, we compare our proposal with existing plasma density diagnostic techniques.
We introduce the first approach to volumetrically generate relativistically thermal plasma at gas-jet--accessible density. Using fully kinetic simulations and theory, we demonstrate that two stages of direct laser acceleration driven by two laser pulses in an applied magnetic field can heat a significant plasma volume to multi-MeV average energy. The highest-momentum feature is 2D-isotropic, persists after the interaction, and includes the majority of electrons, enabling experimental access to bulk-relativistic, high-energy-density plasma in an optically diagnosable regime for the first time.
We report a laser wakefield acceleration of electron beams up to 130 MeV from laser-driven 4-mm long nitrogen gas jet. By using a moderate laser intensity (3.5*10^18 W.cm^(-2)) and relatively low plasma densities (0.8*10^18 cm^(-3) to 2.7*10^18 cm^(-3)) we have achieved a stable regime for laser propagation and consequently a stable generation of electron beams. We experimentally studied the dependence of the drive laser energy on the laser-plasma channel and electron beam parameters. The quality of the generated electron beams is discussed within the framework of the ionization-induced inject…
Table-top laser-plasma ion accelerators seldom achieve narrow energy spreads, and never without serious compromises in efficiency, particle yield, etc. Using massive computer simulations, we identify a self-organizing scheme that exploits persisting self-generated plasma electric (~TV/m) and magnetic (~10${}^{4}$ Tesla) fields to reduce the ion energy spread after the laser exits the plasma - separating the ion acceleration from the energy spread reduction. Consistent with the scheme, we experimentally demonstrate aluminum and carbon ion beams with narrow spectral peaks at energies up to 310 M…
When studying the interaction of matter with extreme fields using multipetawatt lasers, there are two limiting cases maximizing either the electric field or the magnetic field. Here, the main attention is paid to the optimal configuration of laser beams in the form of an m-dipole wave, which maximizes the magnetic field, and the corresponding production of pair plasma via a QED cascade using 10-PW class lasers. We show that the threshold of vacuum breakdown with respect to avalanche-like pair generation is about 10 PW. Using 3D PIC modeling in the specified fields, we go deeper into the physic…
For simulating laser-plasma interactions, we developed a parallel, multi-dimensional, fully relativistically particle-in-cell (PIC) code, named YUNIC. The core algorithm is introduced, including field solver, particle pusher, field interpolation, and current interpolation. In addition to the classical electromagnetic interaction in plasmas, nonlinear Compton scattering and nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair production are also implemented based on Monte-Carlo methods to study quantum electrodynamics (QED) processes. We benchmark YUNIC against theories and other PIC codes through several typical case…
A method of creating plasma channels with controllable depth and transverse profile for the guiding of short, high power laser pulses for efficient electron acceleration is proposed. The plasma channel produced by the hydrogen-filled capillary discharge waveguide is modified by a ns-scale laser pulse, which heats the electrons near the capillary axis. This interaction creates a deeper plasma channel within the capillary discharge that evolves on a ns-time scale, allowing laser beams with smaller spot sizes than would otherwise be possible in the unmodified capillary discharge.
Strongly magnetizing a plasma adds a range of waves that do not exist in unmagnetized plasmas and enlarges the laser-plasma interaction (LPI) landscape. In this paper, we use particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations to investigate strongly magnetized LPI in one dimension under conditions relevant for magneto-inertial fusion experiments, focusing on a regime where the electron-cyclotron frequency is greater than the plasma frequency and the magnetic field is at an oblique angle with respect to the wave vectors. We show that when electron-cyclotron-like hybrid wave frequency is about half the laser fr…
We use PIC modeling to identify the acceleration mechanism responsible for the observed generation of super-hot electrons in ultra-intense laser-plasma interactions with solid targets with pre-formed plasma. We identify several features of direct laser acceleration (DLA) that drive the generation of super-hot electrons. We find that, in this regime, electrons that become super-hot are primarily injected by a looping mechanism that we call loop-injected direct acceleration (LIDA).
Triggering vacuum breakdown at the upcoming laser facilities can provide rapid electron-positron pair production for studies in laboratory astrophysics and fundamental physics. However, the density of the emerging plasma should seemingly stop rising at the relativistic critical density, when the plasma becomes opaque. Here we identify the opportunity of breaking this limit using optimal beam configuration of petawatt-class lasers. Tightly focused laser fields allow plasma generation in a small focal volume much less than $λ^3$, and creating extreme plasma states in terms of density and produce…
The interaction of two lasers with a difference frequency near that of the ambient plasma frequency produces beat waves that can resonantly accelerate thermal electrons. These beat waves can be used to drive electron current and thereby embed magnetic fields into the plasma [D. R. Welch et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 225002 (2012)]. In this paper, we present two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations of the beat-wave current-drive process over a wide range of angles between the injected lasers, laser intensities, and plasma densities. We discuss the application of this technique to the magnet…
With the aid of large-scale three-dimensional QED-PIC simulations, we describe a realistic experimental configuration to measure collective effects that couple strong field quantum electrodynamics to plasma kinetics. For two counter propagating lasers interacting with a foil at intensities exceeding $10^{22}$ Wcm$^{-2}$, a binary result occurs; when quantum effects are included, a foil that classically would effectively transmit the laser pulse becomes opaque. This is a dramatic change in plasma behavior, directly as a consequence of the coupling of radiation reaction and pair production to pl…
The strong-coupling mode, called quasimode, will be excited by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in high-intensity laser-plasma interaction. And SBS of quasimode will compete with SBS of fast mode (or slow mode) in multi-ion species plasmas, thus leading to a low-frequency burst behavior of SBS reflectivity. The competition of quasimode and ion-acoustic wave (IAW) is an important saturation mechanism of SBS in high-intensity laser-plasma interaction. These results give a clear explanation to the low-frequency periodic burst behavior of SBS and should be considered as a saturation mechanism…
