Metastability Exchange Optical Pumping of Helium-3 at High Pressures and 1.5 T: Comparison of two Optical Pumping Transitions

At low magnetic field, metastability exchange optical pumping of helium-3 is known to provide high nuclear polarizations for pressures around 1 mbar. In a recent paper, we demonstrated that operating at 1.5 T can significantly improve the results of metastability exchange optical pumping at high pressures. Here, we compare the performances of two different optical pumping lines at 1.5 T, and show that either the achieved nuclear polarization or the production rate can be optimized.

High nuclear polarization of helium-3 at low and high pressure by metastability exchange optical pumping at 1.5 Tesla

We perform metastability exchange optical pumping of helium-3 in a strong magnetic field of 1.5 T. The achieved nuclear polarization, from 80% at 1.33 mbar to 25% at 67 mbar, shows a substantial improvement at high pressures with respect to standard low-field optical pumping. The specific mechanisms of metastability exchange optical pumping at high field are investigated, advantages and intrinsic limitations are discussed. Enhanced Polarization of Low Pressure $^3$He through Metastability-Exchange Optical Pumping at High Field

We report high steady-state nuclear polarization of 1 torr $^3$He gas nuclei via metastability-exchange optical pumping at magnetic fields above 2 T. The introduction of highly polarized $^3$He gas into Brookhaven's Electron Beam Ion Source would enable a new, polarized $^3$He ion source for use at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and a future Electron-Ion Collider facility. Magnetic Field Effects on the 1083 nm Atomic Line of Helium. Optical Pumping of Helium and Optical Polarisation Measurement in High Magnetic Field

The structure of the excited $2^{3}$S and $2^{3}$P triplet states of $^{3}$He and $^{4}$He in an applied magnetic field B is studied using different approximations of the atomic Hamiltonian. Diffusion, thermalization and optical pumping of YbF molecules in a cold buffer gas cell

We produce YbF molecules with a density of 10^18 m^-3 using laser ablation inside a cryogenically-cooled cell filled with a helium buffer gas. Using absorption imaging and absorption spectroscopy we study the formation, diffusion, thermalization and optical pumping of the molecules. The absorption images show an initial rapid expansion of molecules away from the ablation target followed by a much slower diffusion to the cell walls. Exploiting transport properties for the detection of optical pumping in heavy ions

We present a kinetic model for optical pumping in Lu$^+$ and Lr$^+$ ions as well as a theoretical approach to calculate the transport properties of Lu$^+$ in its ground $^1S_0$ and metastable $^3D_1$ states in helium background gas. Calculations of the initial ion state populations, the field and temperature dependence of the mobilities and diffusion coefficients, and the ion arrival time distributions demonstrate that the ground- and metastable-state ions can be collected and discriminated efficiently under realistic macroscopic conditions.

We experimentally demonstrate how magnetic depolarization of velocity-selective optical pumping can be used to single out the collisional cusp kernel best describing spin and velocity relaxing collisions between potassium atoms and low pressure helium. Nonlinear Variation of Light-Pressure-Induced Multilevel Atomic Line Shifts with Vapor Pressure in Helium Spectroscopy

This paper has been temporarily withdrawn. Highly nonlinear dependences of 4He 2^3S - 2^3P lines on pressure were observed in vapor cell saturation spectroscopy. Nuclear hyperpolarization of 3He by magnetized plasmas

We describe a method to hyperpolarize 3He nuclear spins at high magnetic fields (4.7 Tesla) solely by a magnetized plasma. The conditions for such a magnetized plasma are fulfilled when the mean free path of the free electrons is much larger than their gyration radius in the rf gas discharge. Investigations are carried out in the 1-15 mbar pressure range with rf excitation at ~100 MHz. Excitation of the $^{229}$Th nucleus via a two-photon electronic transition

We investigate the process of nuclear excitation via a two-photon electron transition (NETP) for the case of the doubly charged thorium. The theory of the NETP process has been devised originally for heavy helium-like ions. In this work, we study this process in the nuclear clock isotope $^{229}$Th in the $2+$ charge state.
