We report on the first observation of hole whispering gallery lasers from semiconductor microcavities with three dimensional optical confinement, with thresholds potentially reducible to micro-to-nano ampere regimes according to a quadratic size-dependent reduction, due to ideal quantum wire properties of the naturally formed photonic quantum rings before imminent recombination in a dynamic steady state fashion. If the device size grows over a critical diameter, the quantum ring whispering gallery then begins to disappear. However, cooperative small hole arrays like 256x256 quantum ring emitters avoid the criticality and open a possibility of constructing practical dense electro-pumped micro-to-nano watt emitter arrays, amenable to mega-to-giga ring emitter chip development via present fabrication techniques.
Chip-integrated whispering-gallery resonators enable compact and wavelength-agile nonlinear optical frequency synthesizers. So far, the most flexible phase-matching technique, i.e. quasi phase matching, has not been applied in this configuration. The reason is the lack of suitable thin films with alternating crystal structure on a low-refractive-index substrate. Here, we demonstrate an innovative method of realizing thin film substrates suitable for quasi phase matching by field-assisted domain engineering of lithium niobate, and subsequent direct bonding and polishing. We are able to fabricat…
We have observed for the first time a new photonic quantum ring emission of anti-whispering gallery modes from a negative mesa-type toroid cavity due to semiconductor photonic corrals.
The interaction of magnetic dipole (MD) emitters and common photonic cavities is usually weak, which is partially due to the low magnetic near field enhancements of the cavities. Here, we show that whispering gallery modes (WGMs) of a subwavelength dielectric cavity can not only greatly boost the emission rate of a MD emitter but also bring efficient couplings between coherent MD emitters. In a WGM cavity, the maximal emission rate (γmax) of a single emitter occurs at an antinode of the field pattern. The emission of the MD emitter can also be greatly affected by another coherent one depending…
We investigate the single-photon transport problem in the system of a Whispering-Gallery mode microresonator directionally coupled with a two-level quantum emitter (QE). This QE-microresonator coupling system can usually be studied by cavity quantum electrodynamics and the single-photon transport methods. However, we find that if we treat a two-level QE as a single-photon phase-amplitude modulator, we can also deal with such systems using the transfer matrix method. Further, in theory, we prove that these three methods are equivalent. The corresponding relations of respective parameters among …
We experimentally demonstrate the use of a novel liquid state, whispering-gallery-mode optical resonator as a highly sensitive humidity sensor. The optical resonator used consists of a droplet made of glycerol, a transparent liquid that enables high optical quality factor, doped with rhodamine 6G, which acts as fluorescent emitter. As glycerol is highly hygroscopic, the refractive index and radius of the droplet change with ambient humidity. This produces a shift on the whispering gallery modes wavelengths, which modulates the emission of rhodamine 6G. This easily-made device has an unpreceded…
Whispering gallery modes are known for having orbital angular momentum, however the interplay of local spin density, orbital angular momentum, and the near-field interaction with quantum emitters is much less explored. Here, we study the spin-orbital interaction of a circularly polarized dipole with the whispering gallery modes (WGMs) of a spherical resonator. Using an exact dyadic Green's function approach, we show that the near-field interaction between the photonic spin of a circularly polarized dipole and the local spin density of whispering gallery modes gives rise to unidirectional behav…

We have tuned the whispering gallery modes of a fused silica microresonator over nearly 1 nm at 800 nm, i.e. over 0.5 FSR or 10^6 linewidths of the resonator. This has been achieved by a new method based on the stretching of a two-stem microsphere. The devices described below will permit new Cavity-QED experiments with this high-Q optical resonator when it is desirable to optimize its coupling to emitters with given transition frequencies. The tuning capability demonstrated here is compatible with both UHV and low temperature operation, which should be useful for future experiments with laser …
Single-walled carbon nanotubes have advantages as a nanoscale light source compatible with silicon photonics because they show room-temperature luminescence at telecom-wavelengths and can be directly synthesized on silicon substrates. Here we demonstrate integration of individual light-emitting carbon nanotubes with silicon microdisk resonators. Photons emitted from nanotubes are efficiently coupled to whispering gallery modes, circulating within the disks and lighting up their perimeters. Furthermore, we control such emission by tuning the excitation wavelength in and out of resonance with hi…
Enhanced light-matter interaction at the nanoscale is pivotal in the foundation of nonlinear optics, quantum optics, and nanophotonics, which are essential for a vast range of applications including single-photon sources, nanolasers, and nanosensors. In this context, the combination of strongly confined polaritons and low-loss nanocavities provides a promising way to enhance light-matter interaction, thus giving rise to a high density of optical states, as quantified by the so-called Purcell factor - the ratio of the decay rate of an optical quantum emitter to its value in free space. Here, we…
An important building block for on-chip photonic applications is a scaled emitter. Whispering gallery mode cavities based on III-Vs on Si allow for small device footprints and lasing with low thresholds. However, multimodal emission and wavelength stability over a wider range of temperature can be challenging. Here, we explore the use of Au nanorods on InP whispering gallery mode lasers on Si for single mode emission. We show that by proper choice of the antenna size and positioning, we can suppress the side-modes of a cavity and achieve single mode emission over a wide excitation range. We es…
Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), a prevalent insulating crystal for dielectric and encapsulation layers in two-dimensional (2D) nanoelectronics and a structural material in 2D nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS), has also rapidly emerged as a promising platform for quantum photonics with the recent discovery of optically active defect centers and associated spin states. Combined with measured emission characteristics, here we propose and numerically investigate the cavity quantum electrodynamics (cavity-QED) scheme incorporating these defect-enabled single photon emitters (SPEs) in h-BN microd…
We investigate the interaction between single quantum emitters and non-transversally polarised photons for which the electric field vector amplitude has a significant component in the direction of propagation. Even though this situation seems to be at odds with the description of light as a transverse wave, it regularly occurs when interfacing or manipulating emitters with non-paraxial, guided, or evanescent light. Here, we couple single rubidium atoms to single photons which are confined in an optical microresonator by continuous total internal reflection. We experimentally show that the non-…
Twisted light with orbital angular momentum (OAM) has been extensively studied for applications in quantum and classical communications, microscopy, and optical micromanipulation. Ejecting the naturally high angular momentum whispering gallery modes (WGMs) of an optical microresonator through a grating-assisted mechanism, where the generated OAM number ($l$) is the difference of the angular momentum of the WGM and that of the grating, provides a scalable, chip-integrated solution for OAM generation. However, demonstrated OAM microresonators have exhibited a much lower quality factor ($Q$) than…
