Coupling of external light signals into a photonic crystal waveguide becomes increasingly inefficient as the group velocity of the waveguiding mode slows down. We have systematically studied the efficiency of coupling in the slow light regime for samples with different truncations of the photonic lattice at the coupling interface. Inverse power law dependence is found to best fit the experimental scaling of the coupling loss on the group index. Coupling efficiency is found to be significantly improved up to group indices of 100 for a truncation of the lattice that favors the appearance of the photonic surface states at the coupling interface in resonance with the slow light mode.
We computationally study a subwavelength dielectric grating structure, show that slab waveguide modes can be used to obtain broadband high reflectivity, and analyze how slab waveguide modes influence reflection. A structure showing interference between Fabry-Perot modes, slab waveguide modes, and waveguide array modes is designed with ultra-broadband high reflectivity. Owing to the coupling of guided modes, the region with reflectivity R > 0.99 has an ultra-high bandwidth ( Δf/f > 30%). The incident-angle region with R > 0.99 extends over a range greater than 40°. Moreover, an asymmetric waveg…
Guided waves modes in a slab waveguide formed from the isotropic dielectric layer embedded by hyperbolic materials are investigated. Optical axis is normal to the slab plane. The dispersion relations for TE and TM waves are found. The differences between hyperbolic waveguide and conventional one are demonstrated. In particular, for each TM mode of hyperbolic waveguide there are two cut-off frequencies and the number of modes is limited. For the TE and TM modes Poynting vector component along the wave's propagation axis could be equal to zero.
Optical modes in anisotropic slab waveguides with topological and chiral magnetoelectric effects are investigated analytically, by deriving the closed-form characteristic equations of the modes and hence computing the dispersion-diagrams. In order to compute the characteristic equations, a vector-potential approach is introduced by incorporating a generalized Lorentz gauge, and the corresponding Helmholtz equations are derived correspondingly. It will be shown that the formation of the complex modes and hybridization of the optical modes in such slab waveguides is inevitable. Moreover, when th…
We demonstrate ultrafast all-optical deflection of spatial solitons in an AlGaAs slab waveguide using 190 fs, 1550 nm pulses which are used to generate and deflect the spatial soliton. The steering beam is focused onto the top of the waveguide near the soliton pathway and the soliton is steered due to refractive index changes induced by optical Kerr, or free carrier (Drude) effects. Angular deflections up to 8 mR are observed.
Motivated by the recent progress in analog computing [Science 343, 160 (2014)], a new approach to perform spatial integration is presented using a dielectric slab waveguide. Our approach is indeed based on the fact that the transmission coefficient of a simple dielectric slab waveguide at its mode excitation angle matches the Green's function of first order integration. Inspired by the mentioned dielectric-based integrator, we further demonstrate its graphene-based counterpart. The latter is not only reconfigurable but also highly miniaturized in contrast to the previously reported designs [Op…
We investigate a short (~1.5μm) partially-corrugated tapered waveguide structure for mode coupling from a silicon micro-slab to a plasmonic nano-gap waveguide at the optical communication frequency. More than 80% transmission efficiency is reported numerically for the first time. The result indicates that the corrugated waveguide structure should not only be helpful for realizing full on-chip silicon plasmonic devices but also a good choice for mode coupling enhancement from dielectric waveguides to plasmonic waveguides. Meanwhile, we point out that the coupling mechanism reported here is diff…
Nonlinear guided wave modes in an asymmetric slab waveguide formed by an isotropic dielectric layer placed on a linear or nonlinear substrate and covered by a hyperbolic material are investigated. Optical axis is normal to the slab plane. The dispersion relations for TM waves are found. It is shown that there are additional cut-off frequencies for each TM mode. The effects of the nonlinearity on the dispersion relations are investigated and discussed. There are the modes, which are corresponded with situation where the peak of electric field is localized in the nonlinear substrate. These modes…
Guided wave modes in a symmetric slab waveguide formed by an isotropic dielectric layer with cubic nonlinear response placed in the hyperbolic surrounding medium are investigated theoretically. Optical axis of the hyperbolic medium is normal to the slab plane. If dielectric permittivity of the waveguide core is more than extraordinary permittivity of the hyperbolic medium each TM mode has two cut-off frequencies. The dispersion relations for these modes are found and numerically solved for cases of focusing and defocussing medium of the core. Number of possible modes at given frequency depends…
Phoxonic crystal as a means of guiding and confining electromagnetic and elastic waves has already attracted attentions. Lack of exact knowledge on how these two types of waves interact inside this crystal and how electromagnetic wave evolves through this interaction has increased this field complexity. Here we explain how an elastic wave affects an electromagnetic wave through photo-elasticity and interface displacement mechanisms in a phoxonic crystal slab waveguide. We obtain a master equation which can describe electromagnetic wave evolution. In this equation we define a coupling parameter…
Photonic crystal slabs have been widely used in nanophotonics for light confinement, dispersion engineering, nonlinearity enhancement, and other unusual effects arising from their structural periodicity. Sub-micron device sizes and mode volumes are routine for silicon-based photonic crystal slabs, however spectrally they are limited to operate in the near infrared. Here, we show that two single-layer graphene sheets allow silicon photonic crystal slabs with submicron periodicity to operate in the terahertz regime, with an extreme 100x wavelength reduction and excellent out-of-plane confinement…
We have measured the photonic bandgap in the transmission of microwaves through a two-dimensional photonic crystal slab. The structure was constructed by cementing acrylic rods in a hexagonal closed-packed array to form rectangular stacks. We find a bandgap centered at approximately 11 GHz, whose depth, width and center frequency vary with the number of layers in the slab, angle of incidence and microwave polarization.
We propose a simple integrated narrowband filter consisting of two grooves on the surface of a slab waveguide. Spectral filtering is performed in transmission at oblique incidence due to excitation of an eigenmode of the structure localized at a ridge cavity between the grooves. For the considered parameters, strictly zero reflectance and unity transmittance are achieved at resonant conditions. Width and location of the transmittance peak can be controlled by changing the widths of the grooves and of the ridge, respectively. The proposed filter may find application in waveguide-integrated spec…
We report on systematic experimental mapping of the transmission properties of two-dimensional silicon-on-insulator photonic crystal waveguides for a broad range of hole radii, slab thicknesses and waveguide lengths for both TE and TM polarizations. Detailed analysis of numerous spectral features allows a direct comparison of experimental data with 3D plane wave and finite-difference time-domain calculations. We find, counter-intuitively, that the bandwidth for low-loss propagation completely vanishes for structural parameters where the photonic band gap is maximized. Our results demonstrate t…
A photonic crystal (PhC) nanocavity formed in an optically very thick slab can support reasonably high-Q modes for lasing. Experimentally, we demonstrate room-temperature pulsed lasing operation from the PhC dipole mode emitting at 1324 nm, which is fabricated in an InGaAsP slab with thickness (T) of 606 nm. Numerical simulation reveals that, when T > 800 nm, over 90% of the laser output power couples to the PhC slab modes, suggesting a new route towards an efficient in-plane laser for photonic integrated circuits.
We develop a semi-analytical model to describe bound states in the continuum (BICs) in photonic crystal slabs. We model leaky modes supported by photonic crystal slabs as a transverse Fabry-Perot resonance composed of a few propagative Bloch waves bouncing back and forth vertically inside the slab. This multimode Fabry-Perot model accurately predicts the existence of BICs and their positions in the parameter space. We show that, regardless of the slab thickness, BICs cannot exist below a cut-off frequency, which is related to the existence of the second-order Bloch wave in the photonic crystal…
In this paper we study and design quasi-2D optomechanical crystals, waveguides, and resonant cavities formed from patterned slabs. Two-dimensional periodicity allows for in-plane pseudo-bandgaps in frequency where resonant optical and mechanical excitations localized to the slab are forbidden. By tailoring the unit cell geometry, we show that it is possible to have a slab crystal with simultaneous optical and mechanical pseudo-bandgaps, and for which optical waveguiding is not compromised. We then use these crystals to design optomechanical cavities in which strongly interacting, co-localized …
We show that, taking a two-dimensional photonic-crystal slab system as an example, surprisingly high quality factors (Q) over 10^5 are achievable, even in the absence of a rigorous photonic-band-gap. We find that the density of in-plane Bloch modes can be controlled by creating additional photon feedback from a finite-size photonic-crystal boundary that serves as a low-Q resonator. This mechanism enables significant reduction in the coupling strength between the bound state and the extended Bloch modes by more than a factor of 40.
We point out that the polarization state of radiation from a photonic crystal slab is strongly constrained by the direct non-resonant scattering process. The phase difference between the two linearly-polarized components in the far field can be predicted analytically and is largely independent of the periodic pattern. We verify the prediction with full-field electromagnetic simulations.
We studied numerically and experimentally the effects of structural disorder on the performance of ultraviolet photonic crystal slab lasers. Optical gain selectively amplifies the high-quality modes of the passive system. For these modes, the in-plane and out-of-plane leakage rates may be automatically balanced in the presence of disorder. The spontaneous optimization of in-plane and out-of-plane confinement of light in a photonic crystal slab may lead to a reduction of the lasing threshold.
A flexible and efficient method for fully vectorial modal analysis of 3D dielectric optical waveguides with arbitrary 2D cross-sections is proposed. The technique is based on expansion of each modal component in some a priori defined functions defined on one coordinate axis times some unknown coefficient-functions, defined on the other axis. By applying a variational restriction procedure the unknown coefficient-functions are determined, resulting in an optimum approximation of the true vectorial mode profile. This technique can be related to both Effective Index and Mode Matching methods. A c…
Sheets of slab waveguides with sharp corners are investigated. By means of rigorous numerical experiments, we look at oblique incidence of semi-guided plane waves. Radiation losses vanish beyond a certain critical angle of incidence. One can thus realize lossless propagation through 90-degree corner configurations, where the remaining guided waves are still subject to pronounced reflection and polarization conversion. A system of two corners can be viewed as a structure akin to a Fabry-Perot-interferometer. By adjusting the distance between the two partial reflectors, here the 90-degree corner…
The use of an optically thick slab may provide versatile solutions for the realization of a current injection type laser using photonic crystals. Here, we show that a transversely higher-order defect mode can be designed to be confined by a photonic band gap in such a thick slab. Using simulations, we show that a high-Q of 10^5 is possible from a finely tuned second-order hexapole mode. Experimentally, we achieve optically pumped pulsed lasing at 1347 nm from the second-order hexapole mode with a peak threshold pump power of 88 uW.
Photonic components based on structured metallic elements show great potential for device applications where field enhancement and confinement of the radiation on a subwavelength scale is required. In this paper we report a detailed study of a prototypical metallo-dielectric photonic structure, where features well known in the world of dielectric photonic crystals, like band gaps and defect modes, are exported to the metallic counterpart, with interesting applications to infrared science and technology, as for instance in quantum well infrared photodetectors, narrow-band spectral filters, and …
We introduce an implementation of a Laplace differentiator based on a photonic crystal slab that operates at transmission mode. We show that the Laplace differentiator can be implemented provided that the guided resonances near the $Γ$ point exhibit an isotropic band structure. Such a device may facilitate nanophotonics-based optical analog computing for image processing.
We derive formulas for Whispering Gallery Mode resonances and bending losses in infinite cylindrical dielectric shells and sets of concentric cylindrical shells. The formulas also apply to spherical shells and to sections of bent waveguides. The derivation is based on a WKB treatment of Helmholtz equation and can in principle be extended to any number of concentric shells. A distinctive limit analytically arises in the analysis when two shells are brought at very close distance to one another. In that limit, the two shells act as a slot waveguide. If the two shells are sufficiently apart, we i…
We investigate the formation of photonic bound states in the continuum (BICs) in photonic crystal slabs from an analytical perspective. Unlike the stationary at-$Γ$ BICs which origin from the geometric symmetry, the tunable off-$Γ$ BICs are due to the weighted destructive via-the-continuum interference in the vicinity of accidental symmetry when the majority of the radiation is pre-canceled. The symmetric compatible nature of the off-$Γ$ BICs leads to a trapping of light that can be tuned through continuously varying the wavevector. With the analytical approach, we explain a reported experimen…
The effect of lattice termination on the surface states in a two-dimensional truncated photonic crystal slab is experimentally studied in a high index contrast silicon-on-insulator system. A single-mode silicon strip waveguide that is separated from the photonic crystal by a trench of variable width is used to evanescently couple to surface states in the surrounding lattice. It is demonstrated that the dispersion of the surface states depends strongly on the specific termination of the lattice.
By applying the properties of Fabry-Perot resonance and Rayleigh anomaly, we have shown that a photonic crystal slab can scatter the light from an incident plane wave into a diffracted light with a very large reflection or transmission coefficient. The enhanced field is either a propagating diffraction order (with a grazing angle of diffraction) or a weakly evanescent order, so it can be particularly useful for applications requiring an enhanced propagating field (or an enhanced field with a low attenuation). An efficient effective medium technique is developed for the design of the resonant p…
The materials having negative permittivity and negative permeability, which are labeled as double-negative (DNG) materials, have attracted much attention because of their unusual physical properties, which are different from those of conventional double-positive (DPS) materials. Animations obtained by the finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD) are provided showing how a transient sinusoidal signal that starts at t=0 propagates in the DPS and DNG waveguides. Three types of waveguides are considered: a slab or grounded slab inside the cladding medium and a parallel-plate waveguide filled wi…
We demonstrate experimentally an air-slot mode-gap photonic crystal cavity with quality factor of 15,000 and modal volume of 0.02 cubic wavelengths, based on the design of an air-slot in a width-modulated line-defect in a photonic crystal slab. The origin of the high Q air-slot cavity mode is the mode-gap effect from the slotted photonic crystal waveguide mode with negative dispersion. The high Q cavities with ultrasmall mode volume are important for applications such as cavity quantum electrodynamics, nonlinear optics and optical sensing.
We show that a very simple structure consisting of a single subwavelength dielectric ridge on the surface of a slab waveguide enables spatial differentiation and integration of the profile of optical beams propagating in the waveguide. The differentiation and integration operations are performed in transmission and in reflection, respectively, at oblique incidence of the beam impinging on the ridge. The implementation of these operations is associated with the resonant excitation of a cross-polarized eigenmode of the ridge. At the considered parameters of the structure and incidence geometry, …
We recently reported on the first realization of ultraviolet photonic crystal laser based on zinc oxide [Appl. Phys. Lett. {\bf 85}, 3657 (2004)]. Here we present the details of structural design and its optimization. We develop a computational super-cell technique, that allows a straightforward calculation of the photonic band structure of ZnO photonic crystal slab on sapphire substrate. We find that despite of small index contrast between the substrate and the photonic layer, the low order eigenmodes have predominantly transverse-electric (TE) or transverse-magnetic (TM) polarization. Becaus…
We investigate the electromagnetic propagation in two-dimensional photonic crystals, formed by parallel dielectric cylinders embedded a uniform medium. The frequency band structure is computed using the standard plane-wave expansion method, while the propagation and scattering of the electromagnetic waves are calculated by the multiple scattering theory. It is shown that within partial bandgaps, the waves tend to bend away from the forbidden directions. Such a property may render novel applications in manipulating optical flows. In addition, the relevance with the imaging by flat photonic crys…
Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are a promising gain material for solution-processed, wavelength-tunable lasers, with potential application in displays, communications, and biomedical devices. In this work, we combine a CQD film with an array of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoantennas to achieve lasing via bound states in the continuum (BICs), which are symmetry-protected cavity modes with giant quality factors. Here, the BICs arise from slab waveguide modes in the planar film, coupled to the periodic nanoantenna array. We engineer the thickness of the CQD film and size of the nanoantennas to achie…
We analyze the influence of the dielectric constant of the slab on the quality factor (Q) in slab photonic crystal cavities with a minimized vertical losses model. The higher value of Q in high-epsilon cavity is attributed to the lower mode frequency. The Q ratio in a high-epsilon (silicon) vs. low-epsilon (diamond) slab is examined as a function of mode volume (Vm). The mode volume compensation technique is discussed. Finally, diamond cavity design is addressed. The analytical results are compared to 3D FDTD calculations. In a double heterostructure design, a Q=2.6*10^5 is obtained. The highe…
Photonic crystals with a finite size can support surface modes when appropriately terminated. We calculate the dispersion curves of surface modes for different terminations using the plane wave expansion method. These non-radiative surface modes can be excited with the help of attenuated total reflection technique. We did experiments and simulations to trace the surface band curve, both in good agreement with the numerical calculations.
We investigate the diffraction of guided modes of a dielectric slab waveguide on a simple integrated structure consisting of a single dielectric ridge on the surface of the waveguide. Numerical simulations based on aperiodic rigorous coupled-wave analysis demonstrate the existence of sharp resonant features and bound states in the continuum (BICs) in the reflectance and the transmittance spectra occurring at oblique incidence of a TE-polarized guided mode on the ridge. Using the effective index method, we explain the resonances by the excitation of the cross-polarized modes of the ridge. The f…
Photonic crystal slabs are the state of the art in studies for the light confinement, optical wave modulating and guiding, as well as nonlinear optical response. Previous studies have shown abundant real-world implementations of photonic crystals in planar optics, metamaterials, sensors, and lasers. Here, we report a novel full 2π phase control method in the reflected light beam over the interaction with a photonic crystal resonant mode, verified by the temporal coupled-mode analysis and S-parameter simulations. Enhanced by the asymmetric coupling with the output ports, the 2π phase shift can …
This study theoretically and experimentally investigates the transmission properties of a metamaterial slab comprised of two layers of metallic fish-scale structure arrays and a sandwiched dielectric layer. Calculations show that the asymmetric transmission can be tuned by varying the slab thickness, due to evanescent interlayer coupling. The spatial evolution of the local field inside the structure indicates that the slab functions as a perfect polarization transformer at certain frequencies in the manner of a waveguide twist. Measured transmission spectra are in good agreement with calculate…
We present a design of a one dimensional dielectric waveguide that can trap a broad band light pulse with different frequency component stored at different positions, effectively forming a "trapped rainbow"[1]. The spectrum of the rainbow covers the whole visible range. To do this, we first show that the dispersion of a $\text{SiO}_2$ waveguide with a Si grating placed on top can be engineered by the design parameter of the grating. Specifically, guided modes with zero group velocity(frozen modes) can be realized. Negative Goos-Hänchen shift along the surface of the grating is responsible for …
In this paper we study the characteristics of subwavelength imaging of a photonic crystal (PhC) superlens under the influence of source displacement. For square- and triangular-lattice photonic crystal lenses, we investigate the influence of changing the lateral position of a single point source on the imaging uniformity and stability. We also study the effect of changing the geometrical center of a pair of sources on the resolution of the double-image. Both properties are found to be sensitive to the displacement, which implies that a PhC slab cannot be treated seriously as a flat lens. We al…
We develop a formalism, based on the mode expansion method, to describe the guided resonances and bound states in the continuum (BICs) in photonic crystal slabs with one-dimensional periodicity. This approach provides analytic insights to the formation mechanisms of these states: the guided resonances arise from the transverse Fabry-Pérot condition, and the divergence of the resonance lifetimes at the BICs is explained by a destructive interference of radiation from different propagating components inside the slab. We show BICs at the center and on the edge of the Brillouin zone protected by s…
The optical properties of slab waveguides made of indefinite permittivity ($\vep$) materials (IEM) are considered. In this medium the transverse permittivity is negative while the longitudinal permittivity is positive. At any given frequency the waveguide supports an infinite number of transverse magnetic (TM) eigenmodes. For a slab waveguide with a fixed thickness, at most only one TM mode is forward-wave. The rest of them are backward waves which can have very large phase index. At a critical thickness, the waveguide supports degenerate forward- and backward-wave modes with zero group veloci…
Optical bound state in the continuum (BIC) is characterized by infinitely high quality factor resulting in drastic enhancement of light-matter interaction phenomena. We study the optical response of a one-dimensional photonic crystal slab with Kerr focusing nonlinearity in the vicinity of BIC analytically and numerically. We predict a strong nonlinear response including multistable behaviour, self-tuning of BIC to the frequency of incident wave, and breaking of symmetry protected BIC. We show that all of these phenomena can be observed in silicon photonic structure at the pump power of several…
We analyze planar electromagnetic waves confined by a slab waveguide formed by two perfect electrical conductors. Remarkably, 2D Maxwell equations describing transverse electromagnetic modes in such waveguides are exactly mapped onto equations for acoustic waves in fluids or gases. We show that interfaces between two slab waveguides with opposite-sign permeabilities support 1D edge modes, analogous to surface acoustic plasmons at interfaces with opposite-sign mass densities. We analyze this novel type of edge modes for the cases of isotropic media and anisotropic media with tensor permeabiliti…
We investigate a periodic array of aluminum nanoantennas embedded in a light-emitting slab waveguide. By varying the waveguide thickness we demonstrate the transition from weak to strong coupling between localized surface plasmons in the nanoantennas and refractive index guided modes in the waveguide. We experimentally observe a non-trivial relationship between extinction and emission dispersion diagrams across the weak to strong coupling transition. These results have implications for a broad class of photonic structures where sources are embedded within coupled resonators. For nanoantenna ar…
We consider the process of low-power light scattering by optical solitons in a slab waveguide with homogeneous and inhomogeneous refractive index core. We observe resonant reflection (Fano resonance) as well as resonant transmission of light by optical solitons at certain incident angles. The resonance position can be controlled experimentally by changing the soliton intensity and the relative frequency detuning between the soliton and the probe light beams.
We study the transmission properties for the waveguide bends composed by a circular photonic crystal. Two types (Y and U type) of the waveguide bends utilizing the circular photonic crystal are studied. It has been shown, compared with the conventional photonic crystal waveguide bends, transmission properties for these bends can be significantly improved. Over a 6.4% bandwidth, less than 1-dB loss/bend are observed. U bent waveguide, i.e., $180^o$ bend, can be easily realized with low loss using the circular photonic crystal.
We propose a new class of one-dimensional (1D) photonic waveguides: the fractal photonic crystal waveguides (FPCWs). These structures are photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) etched with fratal distribution of grooves such as Cantor bars. The transmission properties of the FPCWs are investigated and compared with those of the conventional 1D PCWs. It is shown that the FPCW transmission spectrum has self-similarity properties associated with the fractal distribution of grooves. Furthermore, FPCWs exhibit sharp localized transmissions peaks that are approximately equidistant inside the photonic ba…
We present a comprehensive theoretical analysis and computational study of four-wave mixing (FWM) of optical pulses co-propagating in one-dimensional silicon photonic crystal waveguides (Si-PhCWGs). Our theoretical analysis describes a very general set-up of the interacting optical pulses, namely we consider nondegenerate FWM in a configuration in which at each frequency there exists a superposition of guiding modes. We incorporate in our theoretical model all relevant linear optical effects, including waveguide loss, free-carrier (FC) dispersion and FC absorption, nonlinear optical effects su…
We present a general approach for coupling a specific mode in a planar photonic crystal (PC) waveguide to a desired free-space mode. We apply this approach to a W1 PC waveguide by introducing small index perturbations to selectively couple a particular transverse mode to an approximately Gaussian, slowly diverging free space mode. This "perturbative photonic crystal waveguide coupler" (PPCWC) enables efficient interconversion between selectable propagating photonic crystal and free space modes with minimal design perturbations.
Based upon projected local density of states (PLDOS) for photons, we develop a local coupling theory to simultaneously treat the weak and strong interaction between a quantum emitter and photons in arbitrary nanostructures. The PLDOS is mapped by an extremely flexible and efficient method. The recent experiment observation for the photonic crystal slabs is very well interpreted by our ab-initio PLDOS. More importantly, a bridge linking the PLDOS and cavity quantum electrodynamics is for the first time established to settle quality factor, g factor and vacuum Rabi splitting. Our work greatly en…
We present slow-light photonic crystal waveguide designs that provide a $\times$8.6 improvement of the local density of optical states at a fully chiral point over previous designs.
Bound states in the continuum (BICs) in photonic crystal slabs represent the resonances with an infinite quality(Q)-factor, occurring above the light line for an infinitely periodic structure. We show that a set of BICs can turn into quasi-BICs with a very high Q-factor even for two or three unit cell structures. They are explained by a viewpoint of BICs originating from the tight binding of individual resonances of each unit cell as in semiconductors. Combined with a reciprocal-space matching technique, the microcavities based on quasi-BICs can achieve a Q-factor as high as defect-based PhC m…
We study coupling and decoupling of parallel waveguides in two-dimensional square-lattice photonic crystals. We show that the waveguide coupling is prohibited at some wavelengths when there is an odd number of rows between the waveguides. In contrast, decoupling does not take place when there is even number of rows between the waveguides. Decoupling can be used to avoid cross talk between adjacent waveguides.
We report a planar 1D photonic bandgap waveguide exhibiting four second-order exceptional points (EP2s). The interactions between the selective pairs of supported quasi-guided TE modes are modulated by spatial distribution of transverse in-homogeneous gain-loss profile.
