Superconducting atom chips have very significant advantages in realizing trapping structures for ultracold atoms compared to conventional atom chips. We extend these advantages further by developing the ability to dynamically tailor the superconducting trap architecture. Heating the chosen parts of a superconducting film by transferring optical images onto its surface we are able to modify the current density distribution and create desired trapping potentials. This method enables us to change the shape and structure of magnetic traps, enabling versatile applications in atomtronics.
We present a method for generating precise magnetic potentials that can be described by a polynomial series along the axis of a cold atom waveguide near the surface of an atom chip. With a single chip design consisting of several wire pairs, various axial potentials can be created by varying the ratio of the currents in the wires, including double wells, triple wells, and pure harmonic traps with suppression of higher order terms. We use this method to design and fabricate a chip with modest experimental requirements. Finally, we use the chip to demonstrate a double well potential.
We present a complete fabrication study of an efficiently-coupled microring optical circuit tailored for cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) with trapped atoms. The microring structures are fabricated on a transparent membrane with high in-vacuum fiber edge-coupling efficiency in a broad frequency band. We employ the hysteretic behavior of a superconducting thin film in the remanent state to generate different traps and flexible magnetic potentials for ultra-cold atoms. The trap geometry can be programmed by externally applied fields. This new approach for atom-optics is demonstrated by three different trap types realized on a single micro-structure: a Z-type trap, a double trap and a bias field free trap. Our studies show that superconductors in the remanent state provide a new versatile platform for atom-optics and applications in ultra-cold quantum gases.
We construct a matter-wave beam splitter using 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensate on an atom chip. Through the use of radio-frequency-induced double-well potentials, we were able to split a BEC into two clouds separated by distances ranging from 2.8 μm to 57 μm. Interference between these two freely expanding BECs has been observed. By varying the rf-field amplitude, frequency, or polarization, we investigate behaviors of the beam-splitter. We present the design, fabrication, and characterization of a segmented surface ion trap with integrated current carrying structures. The latter produce a spatially varying magnetic field necessary for magnetic gradient induced coupling between ionic effective spins. We demonstrate trapping of strings of 172Yb+ ions, characterize the performance of the trap and map magnetic fields by radio frequency-optical double resonance spectroscopy. In addition, we apply and characterize the magnetic gradient and demonstrate individual addressing in a string of three ions using RF radiation.
