We investigate the financial network in the Korean stock exchange (KSE) market, using both numerical simulations and scaling arguments. We estimate the cross-correlation on the stock price exchanges of all companies listed on the the Korean stock exchange market, where all companies are fully connected via weighted links, by introducing a weighted random graph. The degree distribution and the edge density are discussed numerically from the market graph, and the statistical analysis for the degree distribution of vertices is particularly found to approximately follow the power law.
In this study, we establish a network structure of the Korean stock market, one of the emerging markets, with its minimum spanning tree through the correlation matrix. Base on this analysis, it is found that the Korean stock market doesn't form the clusters of the business sectors or of the industry categories. When the MSCI (Morgan Stanley Capital International Inc.) index is exploited, we found that the clusters of the Korean stock market is formed. This finding implicates that the Korean market, in this context, is characteristically different form the mature markets.
We study the effect of globalization on the Korean market, one of the emerging markets. Some characteristics of the Korean market are different from those of the mature market according to the latest market data, and this is due to the influence of foreign markets or investors. We concentrate on the market network structures over the past two decades with knowledge of the history of the market, and determine the globalization effect and market integration as a function of time.
In this paper, we studied the dynamics of the log-return distribution of the Korean Composition Stock Price Index (KOSPI) from 1992 to 2004. Based on the microscopic spin model, we found that while the index during the late 1990s showed a power-law distribution, the distribution in the early 2000s was exponential. This change in distribution shape was caused by the duration and velocity, among other parameters, of the information that flowed into the market.
We investigate multifractality in the Korean stock-market index KOSPI. The generalized $q$th order height-height correlation function shows multiscaling properties. There are two scaling regimes with a crossover time around $t_c =40$ min. We consider the original data sets and the modified data sets obtained by removing the daily jumps, which occur due to the difference between the closing index and the opening index. To clarify the origin of the multifractality, we also smooth the data through convolution with a Gaussian function. After convolution we observe that the multifractality disappea…
We investigated the temporally evolving network structures of the Japanese and Korean stock markets through the minimum spanning trees composed of listed stocks. We tested the validity of conventional grouping by industrial categories, and found a common trend of decrease for Japan and Korea. This phenomenon supports the increasing external effects on the markets due to the globalization of both countries. At last the Korean market are grouped with the MSCI Korea Index, a good reference for foreigners' trading, in the early 2000s \cite{Jung2006}. In the Japanese market, this tendency is streng…
Geography effect is investigated for the Chinese stock market including the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets, based on the daily data of individual stocks. The Shanghai city and the Guangdong province can be identified in the stock geographical sector. By investigating a geographical correlation on a geographical parameter, the stock location is found to have an impact on the financial dynamics, except for the financial crisis time of the Shenzhen market. Stock distance effect is further studied, with a crossover behavior observed for the stock distance distribution. The probability of the …
In this paper the diffusion entropy technique is applied to investigate the scaling behavior of financial markets. The scaling behaviors of four representative stock markets, Dow Jones Industrial Average, Standard&Poor 500, Heng Seng Index, and Shang Hai Stock Synthetic Index, are almost the same; with the scale-invariance exponents all in the interval $[0.92, 0.95]$. These results provide a strong evidence of the existence of long-rang correlation in financial time series, thus several variance-based methods are restricted for detecting the scale-invariance properties of financial markets. In…
We construct a correlation matrix based financial network for a set of New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) traded stocks with stocks corresponding to nodes and the links between them added one after the other, according to the strength of the correlation between the nodes. The eigenvalue spectrum of the correlation matrix reflects the structure of the market, which also shows in the cluster structure of the emergent network. The stronger and more compact a cluster is, the earlier the eigenvalue representing the corresponding business sector occurs in the spectrum. On the other hand, if groups of st…
We study the temporal evolution of the market efficiency in the stock markets using the complexity, entropy density, standard deviation, autocorrelation function, and probability distribution of the log return for Standard and Poor's 500 (S&P 500), Nikkei stock average index, and Korean composition stock price index (KOSPI). Based on the microscopic spin model, we also find that these statistical quantities in stock markets depend on the market efficiency.
This paper reports the effort of using agent-based mix-game model to predict financial time series. It introduces simple generic algorithm into the prediction methodology, and gives an example of its application to forecasting Shanghai Index. The results show that this prediction methodology is effective and agent-based mix-game model is a potential good model to predict time series of financial markets
We study the dynamical behavior of high-frequency data from the Korean Stock Price Index (KOSPI) using the movement of returns in Korean financial markets. The dynamical behavior for a binarized series of our models is not completely random. The conditional probability is numerically estimated from a return series of KOSPI tick data. Non-trivial probability structures can be constituted from binary time series of autoregressive (AR), logit, and probit models, for which the Akaike Information Criterion shows a minimum value at the 15th order. From our results, we find that the value of the corr…
In this paper we analyse the structure of Warsaw's stock market using complex systems methodology together with network science and information theory. We find minimal spanning trees for log returns on Warsaw's stock exchange for yearly times series between 2000 and 2013. For each stock in those trees we calculate its Markov centrality measure to estimate its importance in the network. We also estimate entropy rate for each of those time series using Lempel-Ziv algorithm based estimator to study the predictability of those price changes. The division of the studied stocks into 26 sectors allow…
We show that a steady-state stock-flow consistent macro-economic model can be represented as a Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP).The set of solutions is a polytope, which volume depends on the constraintsapplied and reveals the potential fragility of the economic circuit, with no need to study the dynamics. Several methods to compute the volume are compared, inspired by operations research methods and theanalysis of metabolic networks, both exact and approximate. We also introduce a random transaction matrix, and study the particularcase of linear flows with respect to money stocks.
Artificial stock market simulation based on agent is an important means to study financial market. Based on the assumption that the investors are composed of a main fund, small trend and contrarian investors characterized by four parameters, we simulate and research a kind of financial phenomenon with the characteristics of pyramid schemes. Our simulation results and theoretical analysis reveal the relationships between the rate of return of the main fund and the proportion of the trend investors in all small investors, the small investors' parameters of taking profit and stopping loss, the or…
In recent years there has been a closer interrelationship between several scientific areas trying to obtain a more realistic and rich explanation of the natural and social phenomena. Among these it should be emphasized the increasing interrelationship between physics and financial theory. In this field the analysis of uncertainty, which is crucial in financial analysis, can be made using measures of physics statistics and information theory, namely the Shannon entropy. One advantage of this approach is that the entropy is a more general measure than the variance, since it accounts for higher o…
With the random matrix theory, we study the spatial structure of the Chinese stock market, American stock market and global market indices. After taking into account the signs of the components in the eigenvectors of the cross-correlation matrix, we detect the subsector structure of the financial systems. The positive and negative subsectors are anti-correlated each other in the corresponding eigenmode. The subsector structure is strong in the Chinese stock market, while somewhat weaker in the American stock market and global market indices. Characteristics of the subsector structures in diffe…
A phenomenon of the financial log-periodicity is discussed and the characteristics that amplify its predictive potential are elaborated. The principal one is self-similarity that obeys across all the time scales. Furthermore the same preferred scaling factor appears to provide the most consistent description of the market dynamics on all these scales both in the bull as well as in the bear market phases and is common to all the major markets. These ingredients set very desirable and useful constraints for understanding the past market behavior as well as in designing forecasting scenarios. One…
The paper is devoted to elaboration of a novel specific indicator based on the modified Holder exponents. This indicator has been used for forecasting critical points of financial time series and crashes of the USA stock market. The proposed approach is based on the hypothesis, which claims that before market critical points occur the dynamics of financial time series radically changes, namely time series become smoother. The approach has been tested on the stylized data and real USA stock market data. It has been shown that it is possible to forecast such critical points of financial time ser…
A financial system contains many elements networked by their relationships. Extensive works show that topological structure of the network stores rich information on evolutionary behaviors of the system such as early warning signals of collapses and/or crises. Existing works focus mainly on the network structure within a single stock market, while a collapse/crisis occurs in a macro-scale covering several or even all markets in the world. This mismatch of scale leads to unacceptable noise to the topological structure, and lack of information stored in relationships between different markets. I…
We find numerical and empirical evidence for dynamical, structural and topological phase transitions on the (German) Frankfurt Stock Exchange (FSE) in the temporal vicinity of the worldwide financial crash. Using the Minimal Spanning Tree (MST) technique, a particularly useful canonical tool of the graph theory, two transitions of the topology of a complex network representing FSE were found. First transition is from a hierarchical scale-free MST representing the stock market before the recent worldwide financial crash, to a superstar-like MST decorated by a scale-free hierarchy of trees repre…
In the age of globalization, it is natural that the stock market of each country is not independent form the other markets. In this case, collective behavior could be emerged form their dependency together. This article studies the collective behavior of a set of forty influential markets in the world economy with the aim of exploring a global financial structure that could be called world-stock-market network. Towards this end, we analyze the cross-correlation matrix of the indices of these forty markets using Random Matrix Theory (RMT). We find the degree of collective behavior among the mar…
We develop a topology data analysis-based method to detect early signs for critical transitions in financial data. From the time-series of multiple stock prices, we build time-dependent correlation networks, which exhibit topological structures. We compute the persistent homology associated to these structures in order to track the changes in topology when approaching a critical transition. As a case study, we investigate a portfolio of stocks during a period prior to the US financial crisis of 2007-2008, and show the presence of early signs of the critical transition.
We investigate the waiting-time distribution of the absolute return in the Korean stock-market index KOSPI. We define the waiting time as a time interval during which the normalized absolute return remains continuously below a threshold $r_c$. Through an exponential bin plot, we observe that the waiting-time distribution shows power-law behavior, $p_f (t) \sim t^{-β}$, for a range of threshold values. The waiting-time distribution has two scaling regimes, separated by the crossover time $t_c \approx 200$ min. The power-law exponents of the waiting-time distribution decrease when the return tim…
We study the temporal fluctuations in time-dependent stock prices (both individual and composite) as a stochastic phenomenon using general techniques and methods of nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. In particular, we analyze stock price fluctuations as a non-Markovian stochastic process using the first-passage statistical concepts of persistence and survival. We report the results of empirical measurements of the normalized $q$-order correlation functions $f_q(t)$, survival probability $S(t)$, and persistence probability $P(t)$ for several stock market dynamical sets. We analyze both minut…
