Photoionization cross section of the fullerene ion C60+ has been calculated within a single-electron approximation and also by using a consistent many-body theory accounting for many-electron correlations.
Considering the photoionization of Ar@C60, we predict resonant femtosecond decays of both Ar and C60 vacancies through the continua of atom-fullerene hybrid final states. The resulting resonances emerge from the interference between simultaneous autoionizing and intercoulombic decay (ICD) processes. For Ar 3s-->np excitations, these resonances are far stronger than the Ar-to-C60 resonant ICDs, while for C60 excitations they are strikingly larger than the corresponding Auger features. The results indicate the power of hybridization to enhance decay rates, and modify lifetimes and line profiles.
The photoionization of a two-shell endohedral A@CN1@CN2 is considered. Formulas are presented for cross-sections and angular anisotropy parameters, both dipole and non-dipole. The effect of the fullerenes shell upon photoelectron from atom A is taken into account substituting the action of the fullerene by two zero-thickness "bubble potential". The fullerenes shells polarization is included assuming that the radius of the outer shell R2 is much bigger than the inner R1 and both much exceeds the atomic radius r. This permits to express the effect via CN1,N2 polarizabilities, which are connected…
We discuss the complicated resonance structure of the endohedral atom photoionization cross section. Very strong enhancement and interference patterns in the photoionization cross-section of the valent and subvalent subshells of noble gas endohedral atoms A@C60 are demonstrated. It is shown also that the atomic Giant resonance can be either completely destroyed or remains almost untouched depending on the velocity of photoelectrons that are emitted in the resonance's decay process. These effects are results of dynamic modification of the incoming beam of radiation due to polarization of the fu…
Powerful hybridization of the Cd 4$d$ state with the $d$-angular momentum state of C$_{60}$ $π$ symmetry is found in the local density approximation (LDA) structure of Cd@C$_{60}$ ground state. The photoionization of the resulting symmetric and antisymmetric levels are computed using the time dependent LDA method to include electron correlations. Cross sections exhibit effects of the C$_{60}$ plasmonic motion coherently coupled to the diffraction-type cavity oscillations induced by local emissions from C$_{60}$. The Cd@C$_{60}$ results exhibit a substantial difference from our previous results…
We demonstrate the prominent modification of the outer shell photoionization cross-section in noble gas (NG) endohedral atoms NG@F under the action of the fullerene F electron shell. This shell leads to two important effects, namely to strong enhancement of the cross-section due to fullerenes shell polarization under the action of the incoming electromagnetic wave and to prominent oscillation of this cross-section due to the reflection of the photoelectron from NG by the F shell. All but He noble gas atoms are considered. The polarization of the fullerene shell is expressed via the total photo…
We discuss the influence of a single or double fullerenes shell upon photoionization and vacancy decay of an atom, stuffed inside the fullerenes construction. The main manifestations of this influence are additional structures in the photoionization cross-section and variation of the vacancy decay probability. The main mechanisms, with which fullerenes shells affect the processes in caged atoms is the scattering of the outgoing electrons by the fullerenes shell and modification of the photon beam due to fullerenes shell polarization. General consideration will be illustrated by numeric calcula…
We demonstrate strong interference patterns in the photoionization cross-section of the subvalent subshells of noble gas (NG) endohedral atoms NG@F. This interference is a result of common action of three factors: the effect of neighboring atomic subshells, reflection of photoelectron waves by the fullerene F shell and resonance modification of the incoming photon beam by the complex effect under the action of the F electrons. We have considered the outer ns-subshells for Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe noble gas atoms. The polarization of the fullerene shell is expressed via the F total photoabsorption cro…
Photoionization of two buckyonions, C$_{60}$@C$_{240}$ and C$_{20}$@C$_{60}$, is investigated by means of time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT). The TDDFT-based photoabsorption spectrum of C$_{60}$@C$_{240}$, calculated in a broad photon energy range, resembles the sum of spectra of the two isolated fullerenes, thus illustrating the absence of strong plasmonic coupling between the fullerenes which was proposed earlier. The calculated spectrum of the smaller buckyonion, C$_{20}$@C$_{60}$, differs significantly from the sum of the cross sections of the individual fullerenes because of…
We have calculated photoionization cross-section of endohedral atoms A@CN. We took into account the polarizability of the fullerene electron shell CN that modifies the incoming photon beam and the one-electron wave functions of the caged atom A. We employ simplified versions of both static and dynamic polarization. The properly modified one-electron wave functions became a starting point of the account of the multi-electron correlations in the frame of the random phase approximation with exchange (RPAE). We treat atomic and fullerenes polarization that act upon photoelectron similarly, substit…
We study the double electronic emission by photon impact from He in the center of a spherical fullerene, which is modeled by a square-well shell. This system exhibits a manifold of avoided crossings as a function of the well depth, and present mirror colapses. However, this symmetry is broken in the triple differential cross section due to the delocalization of the He electrons in the initial state. Moreover, the fullerene potential involves higher angular momenta partial waves to be included in the process, which modifies the well-known two-lobe cross section from isolated He.
The probability that photoionization of the caged atom in an endohedral system is accompanied by excitation of the fullerene shell is shown to be close to unity in broad intervals of the photoelectron energies. The result is obtained by summation of the perturbative series for the interaction between the photoelectron and the fullerene shell. This result means that the interaction between the photoelectron ejected from the cage atom and the fullerene shell cannot be described by a static potential, since inelastic processes become decisively important.
We calculate the photoionization cross-section of a molecular endohedral. We limit ourselves to two-atomic molecules. The consideration is much more complex than for atomic endohedrals because the system even for almost spherical fullerenes has only cylindrical instead of spherical symmetry. On the other hand, molecular endohedral is more interesting since the interelectron interaction in molecules is relatively stronger than in similar atoms. We present here results of calculations of molecular hydrogen stuffed inside almost spherical fullerene. For comparison, we perform calculations also fo…
In this Letter, we investigate the time delay of photoelectrons by fullerenes shell in endohedrals. We present general formulas in the frame of the random phase approximation with exchange (RPAE) applied to endohedrals A@CN that consist of an atom A located inside of a fullerenes shell constructed of N carbon atoms C. We calculate the time delay of electrons that leave the inner atom A in course of A@CN photoionization. Our aim is to clarify the role that is played by CN shell. As concrete examples of A we have considered Ne, Fr, Kr and Xe, and as fullerene we consider C60. The presence of the…
Our previous studies [J. Phys. B 53, 125101 (2020); Euro. Phys. J. D 74, 191 (2020)] have predicted that the atom-fullerene hybrid photoionization properties for X = Cl, Br and I endohedrally confined in C60 are different before and after an electron transfers from C60 to the halogen. It was further found as a rule that the ionization dynamics is insensitive to the C60 level the electron originates from to produce X-@C60+. In the current study, we report an exception to this rule in F@C60. It is found that when the electron vacancy is situated in the C60 level that participates in the hybridiz…
In this Letter, we investigate the variation of endohedral A@CN potential due to addition at the center of it a positive charge, for example, in the process of atom A photoionization. Using a reasonable model to describe the fullerenes shell, we managed to calculate the variation that is a consequence of the monopole polarization of CN shell. We analyze model potentials with flat and non-flat bottoms and demonstrate that the phenomenological potentials that properly simulates the C60 shell potential should belong to a family of potentials with a non-flat bottom. As concrete example, we use the…
We analyze using Poisson equation the spatial distributions of the positive charge of carbon atomic nuclei shell and negative charge of electron clouds forming the electrostatic potential of the C60 fullerene shell as a whole. We consider also the case when an extra positive charge appears inside C60 in course of e.g. photoionization of an endohedral A@C. We demonstrate that frequently used radial square-well potential U(r) simulating the C60 shell leads to nonphysical charge densities of the shell in both cases - without and with an extra positive charge inside. We conclude that the square we…
We demonstrate the role played by the fullerene shell in the photoionization and vacancy decay of endohedral atoms A@C60. It is shown, partly in the frame of a rather simple model that describes the fullerene shell, partly using only the assumption on the smallness of the atom A in comparison to the size of C60 that it affects photoionization and the vacancy decay of A@C60 profoundly. Namely, it leads to a number of new resonances in photoionization cross-section and other photoionization characteristics as well as strong modifications of the vacancy decay probabilities and opening of new deca…
We demonstrate rather interesting manifestations of co-existence of resonance features in characteristics of the photoionization of 3d-electrons in Xe, Cs and Ba endohedral atoms. It is shown that for all of the considered atoms the reflection by the fullerene shell of photoelectrons produced by the 3d subshell photoionization affects greatly partial photoionization cross-sections of 3d5/2 and 3d3/2 levels and respective angular anisotropy parameters, both dipole and non-dipole adding to all of them additional maximums and minimums. The results obtained demonstrate distinctive differences betw…
It is demonstrated that outer and inner electron shells, including that formed by collectivized electrons of the fullerene C60, affects dramatically the cross section of the subvalent ns-subshells of the noble gas endohedral atoms A@C60. The calculations are performed within the framework of a very simple, so-called "orange skin", model that makes it possible, in spite of its simplicity, to take into account the modification of the ns-subshell due to its interaction with inner and outer atomic shells, as well as with the collectivized electrons of the C60. As a concrete example, we consider th…
Photoabsorption spectrum of the Xe@C$_{60}$ endohedral fullerene has been studied using the time-dependent-density-functional-theory (TDDFT), which represents the dynamical polarizability of an interacting electron system by an off-diagonal matrix element of the resolvent of the Liouvilliam superoperator and solves the problem with the Lanczos algorithm. The method has been tested with the photoabsorption cross sections of the free Xe atom and C$_{60}$ fullerene. The result for the Xe@C$_{60}$ confirms the three main peaks observed in the recent measurement in the energy region of the Xe 4$d$ …
Trends in resonances, termed confinement resonances, in photoionization of atoms A in endohedral fullerene anions A@C60^{z-} are theoretically studied and exemplified by the photoionization of Ne in Ne@C{60}^{z-}. Remarkably, above a particular nl ionization threshold of Ne in neutral Ne@C60 (I_{nl}^{z=0}), confinement resonances in corresponding partial photoionization cross sections sigma_{nl} of Ne in any charged Ne@C60^{z-} remain almost intact by a charge z on the carbon cage, as a general phenomenon. At lower photon energies, omega < I_{nl}^{z=0}, the corresponding photoionization cross …
Inter-Coulombic decay (ICD) resonances in the photoionization of Cl@C60 endofullerene molecule are calculated using a perturbative density functional theory (DFT) method. This is the first ICD study of an open shell atom in a fullerene cage. Three classes of resonances are probed: (i) Cl inner vacancies decaying through C60 outer continua, (ii) C60 inner vacancies decaying through Cl outer continua, and (iii) inner vacancies of either system decaying through the continua of Cl-C60 hybrid levels, the hybrid Auger-ICD resonances. Comparisons with Ar@C60 results reveal that the properties of hybr…
A robust potential wherein is embedded the crucial core polarization interaction is used in the Regge Pole methodology to calculate low energy electron elastic scattering total cross section (TCS) for the C60 fullerene in the electron impact energy range 0.02 through 10.0 eV. The energy position of the characteristic dramatically sharp resonance appearing at the second Ramsauer Townsend (RT) minimum of the TCS representing stable C60 fullerene negative ion formation agrees excellently with the measured electron affinity (EA) of C60 [Huang et al 2014 J. Chem. Phys. 140 224315]. The benchmarked …
The excited short-lived volume-localized electron quantum levels (VLELs) existent due to Coulomb potential well inside positive ion are analytically investigated in the paper using a simplified spherical fullerene model. Hence, those electron levels appear exclusively after the ionization of neutral fullerene taking into account the unique geometrical shape of sphere. The existence of those levels is argued, and their basic parameters (the energy levels, the wave eigenfunctions) are approximately calculated. The wave functions of VLELs are basically localized inside fullerene ion sphere (with …
For the asymmetric spherical dimer of an endohedrally confined atom and a host fullerene, an innershell vacancy of either system can decay through the continuum of an outer electron hybridized between the systems. Such decays, viewed as coherent superpositions of the single-center Auger and two-center inter-Coulombic (ICD) amplitudes, are found to govern leading decay mechanisms in noble-gas endofullerenes, and are likely omnipresent in this class of nanomolecules. A comparison between resulting autoionizing resonances calculated in the photoionization of Ar@C60 and Kr@C60 exhibits details of …
In this work, we present a theoretical study of the photoionization for atomic hydrogen confined in onion fullerene compared with the bare H atom and the single fullerene case. We obtained the expected confinement resonances for the integrated probabilities, finding different trends for the main peak and the first ATI peak integrations. We perform these calculations with a recently developed methodology using Generalized Sturmian Functions to numerically solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation.
We investigate here the fast electron scattering upon endohedral atoms that present a fullerene CN staffed by an atom A, A@CN. We calculate the inelastic scattering cross-section expressing it via generalized oscillator strengths (GOS) density. We take into account two major effects of CN upon ionization of the atom A. Namely, the scattering of the electron by the static potential of the fullerenes shell and modification of the interaction between the fast incoming and atomic electrons due to polarization of the fullerenes shell by the incoming electron beam. To obtain the main features of the…
We show, with an example of Na_92, that for jellium metal clusters the interference of fast electron-waves emitted from equivalent sites on the cluster edge produces monochromatic oscillations in all photoionization observables as a function of the photoelectron momentum; the effect is equivalent to the usual dispersion phenomenon. In dealing with formalisms, a serious consequence of the inadequacy of self-interaction corrected local density-functional theory in correctly accounting for the exchange interaction is identified. We also briefly discuss the influence of the ionicity of the residua…
We demonstrate for the first time that the effect of fullerene shell upon photoionization of the "caged" atom in an endohedral can result in formation of Giant Endohedral Resonances or GER. This is illustrated by the concrete case of Xe@C60 photoionization cross-section that exhibits at 17 eV a powerful resonance with total oscillator strengths of about 25. The prominent modification of the 5p6 electron photoionization cross-section of Xe@C60 takes place due to strong fullerene shell polarization under the action of the incoming electromagnetic wave and oscillation of this cross-section due to…
Fullerene complexes may play a key role in the design of future molecular electronics and nanostructured devices with potential applications in light harvesting using organic solar cells. Charge and energy flow in these systems is mediated by many-body effects. We studied the structure and dynamics of laser-induced multi-electron excitations in isolated C$_{60}$ by two-photon photoionization as a function of excitation wavelength using a tunable fs UV laser and developed a corresponding theoretical framework on the basis of \emph{ab initio} calculations. The measured resonance line width gives…
Absolute cross sections for the {\it K}-shell photoionization of Be-like and Li-like atomic nitrogen ions were measured by employing the ion-photon merged-beam technique at the SOLEIL synchrotron radiation facility in Saint-Aubin, France. High-resolution spectroscopy at nominal resolutions of 38 meV, 56 meV, 111 meV, 133 meV FWHM for Be-like and 125 meV FWHM for Li-like atomic nitrogen ions was achieved for the photon energies ranging from 410 eV up to 460 eV. The experimental measurements are compared with theoretical estimates from the multi-configuration Dirac-Fock (MCDF), R-matrix and an e…
Regge-pole calculated low-energy electron elastic total cross sections (TCSs) for complex heavy atoms and fullerene molecules are characterized generally by ground, metastable, and excited negative-ion formation, shape resonances and Ramsauer-Townsend minima. Here the extracted anionic binding energies (BEs) from the TCSs of various atoms and fullerenes are used to highlight the ambiguous meaning of some current electron affinities (EAs) of heavy complex atomic systems. The crucial question is: does the EA correspond to the BE of the attached electron in the ground or excited state of the form…
Besides buckminsterfullerene (C60), other fullerenes and their derivatives may also reside in space. In this work, we study the formation and photo-dissociation processes of astronomically relevant fullerene/anthracene (C14H10) cluster cations in the gas phase. Experiments are carried out using a quadrupole ion trap (QIT) in combination with time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometry. The results show that fullerene (C60, and C70)/anthracene (i.e., [(C14H10)nC60]+ and [(C14H10)nC70]+), fullerene (C56 and C58)/anthracene (i.e., [(C14H10)nC56]+ and [(C14H10)nC58]+) and fullerene (C66 and C68)/anthra…
A description of neutral and multiply charged fullerenes is proposed based on a stabilized jellium (structureless pseudopotential) approximation for the ionic background and the local density approximation for the sigma and pi valence electrons. A recently developed shell-correction method is used to calculate total energies and properties of both the neutral and multiply charged anionic and cationic fullerenes. The effect of the icosahedral symmetry is included perturbatively. The calculated single-particle energy level spectrum of C_60 is in good correspondence with experimentally measured o…
Intense X-ray photo-absorption from short and intense pulses by a molecule triggers complicated electron and subsequently ion dynamics leading to photo-electron spectra which are difficult to interpret. Illuminating fullerenes offers a way to separate out the electron dynamics. Moreover, the fullerene cage confines spatially the origin of photo and Auger electrons. Together with the sequential nature of the photo processes at intensities available at X-ray free electron lasers, this allows for a remarkably detailed interpretation of the photo-electron spectra as we will demonstrate. The genera…
The existence of a system of short-live discrete volume-localized electron quantum levels in positively charged fullerenes is theoretically and numerically demonstrated using the example of fullerenes C60 and C20. Unlike well-studied experimentally and theoretically electron states localized in a thin surface layer, these electron states are due to the flat part of the Coulomb potential of a positively charged fullerene sphere. The energy width of the system of such discrete volume-localized levels depends on the charge and increases with charge increasing. For C60+1, the energy width is 0.32 …
We investigate the linear behavior in the 2+ ion concentration observed in the double photoionization of a variety of aromatic molecules. We show it arises when the photoelectrons are emitted simultaneously. Neglecting the momentum of the incoming photon and the momentum transferred to the molecule, it follows that the momenta of the individual photoelectrons are oppositely directed and equal in magnitude. Under steady-state conditions, the ion concentration is proportional to the rate at which the ions are created which, in turn, varies as the product of the densities of states of the individ…
Metal-fullerene compounds are characterized by significant electron transfer to the fullerene cage, giving rise to an electric dipole moment. We use the method of electrostatic beam deflection to verify whether such reactions take place within superfluid helium nanodroplets between an embedded C$_{60}$ molecule and either alkali (heliophobic) or rare-earth (heliophilic) atoms. The two cases lead to distinctly different outcomes: C$_{60}$Na$_n$ ($n$=1-4) display no discernible dipole moment, while C$_{60}$Yb is strongly polar. This suggests that the fullerene and small alkali clusters fail to f…
