The nonlinear dynamics of the free surface of an ideal dielectric liquid in a strong electric field is studied. The equation for the evolution of surface electrohydrodynamic waves is derived in the approximation of small surface-slope angles. It is established that the equation can be solved for liquids with sufficiently high values of the permittivity. This makes it possible to describe the interaction of the counter-propagating waves.
The process of interaction between nonlinear waves on a free surface of a nonconducting fluid in a strong tangential electric field is simulated numerically (effects of the force of gravity and capillarity are neglected). It is shown that singular points are formed at the fluid boundary in a finite time; at these points, the boundary curvature significantly increases and undergoes a discontinuity. The amplitude and slope angles of the boundary remain small. The singular behavior of the system is demonstrated by spectral functions of the fluid surface - they acquire a power dependence. Near the…
Nonlinear dynamics of the free surface of an ideal incompressible non-conducting fluid with high dielectric constant subjected by strong horizontal electric field is simulated on the base of the method of conformal transformations. It is demonstrated that interaction of counter-propagating waves leads to formation of regions with steep wave front at the fluid surface; angles of the boundary inclination tend to π/2, and the curvature of surface extremely increases. A significant concentration of the energy of the system occurs at these points. From the physical point of view, the appearance of …
Nonlinear dynamics of the free surface of finite depth non-conducting fluid with high dielectric constant subjected to a strong horizontal electric field is considered. Using the conformal transformation of the region occupied by the fluid into a strip, the process of counter-propagating waves interaction is numerically simulated. The nonlinear solitary waves on the surface can separately propagate along or against the direction of electric field without distortion. At the same time, the shape of the oppositely traveling waves can be distorted as the result of their interaction. In the problem…
Processes of propagation and interaction of nonlinear gravity-capillary waves on the free surface of a deep non-conducting liquid with high dielectric constant under the action of a tangential electric field are numerically simulated. The computational method is based on the time-dependent conformal transformation of the region occupied by the fluid into a half-plane. In the limit of a strong electric field, when the gravitational and capillary forces are negligibly small, there exists an exact analytical solution of the electro-hydrodynamic equations describing propagation without distortions…
A direct numerical simulation of the interaction of plane capillary waves on the surface of a liquid dielectric in an external tangential electric field taking into account viscous forces has been performed. It has been shown that the interaction of counter-propagating nonlinear waves can generate a direct energy cascade. In the quasistationary energy dissipation regime, probability density functions for angles of inclination of the boundary tend to a Gaussian distribution and the shape of the boundary becomes complex and chaotic. The spectrum of the surface perturbations in this regime is des…
This paper proposes a method for studying the early stages of the cavitation development in arbitrary, non-stationary conditions. This method is based on the comparison of the results of calculations in the framework of a theoretical model of the liquid dielectrics motion in a strong non-uniform electric field and experiments with controlled parameters. This approach allows us to find the critical negative pressure, at which cavitation begins to develop, and to determine the values of the constants in the classical models of cavitation.
We consider a coupled system of Navier Stokes, Maxwell Stefan and Poisson Boltzmann equations by incorporating the variation of dielectric constant, which governs the electro osmotic flow in nano channel, describing the evolution of the velocity, concentration and potential fields of dissolved constituents in an aqueous electrolyte solution. We apply the finite difference technique to solve one and two dimensional systems of these equations. The solutions give an extremely accurate prediction of the dielectric constant for a variety of salts and a wide range of concentrations.
We study experimentally and numerically the thinning of a Newtonian leaky-dielectric filament subject to an axial electric field. We consider moderately viscous liquids with high permittivity. The experiments show that satellite droplets are produced from the breakup of the filaments with high electrical permittivity due to the action of the electric field. Two electrified filaments with the same minimum radius thin at the same speed regardless of when the voltage was applied. The numerical simulations show that the polarization stress is responsible for the pinching delay observed in the expe…
The behavior of a microdrop of dielectric liquid suspended in a magnetic fluid and exposed to the action of electric and magnetic fields is studied experimentally. With increasing electric field, the deformation of droplets into oblate ellipsoid, toroid and curved toroid was observed. At the further increase in the electric field, the bursting of droplets was also revealed. The electrorotation of deformed droplets was observed and investigated. The influence of an additional magnetic field on the droplet dynamics was studied. The main features of the droplet dynamics were interpreted and theor…
We consider the dynamics of a compressible fluid under the influence of electrostrictive ponderomotive forces in strong inhomogeneous nonstationary electric fields. It is shown that if the fronts of the voltage rise at a sharp, needle-like electrode are rather steep (less than or about nanoseconds), and the region of negative pressure arises, which can reach values at which the fluid loses its continuity with the formation of cavitation ruptures. If the voltage on the electrode is not large enough or the front is flatter, the cavitation in the liquid does not occur. However, a sudden shutdown …
In this paper, by using a phase-change lattice Boltzmann (LB) model coupled with an electric field model, we numerically investigate the performance and enhancement mechanism of pool boiling of dielectric fluids on pillar-structured surfaces under an electric field. The numerical investigation reveals that applying an electric field causes both positive and negative influences on the pool boiling of dielectric fluids on pillar-structured surfaces. It is found that, under the action of an electric field, the electric force prevents the bubbles nucleated in the channels from crossing the edges o…
The evolution of the interface between two ideal dielectric liquids in a strong vertical electric field is studied. It is found that a particular flow regime, for which the velocity potential and the electric field potential are linearly dependent functions, is possible if the ratio of the permittivities of liquids is inversely proportional to the ratio of their densities. The corresponding reduced equations for interface motion are derived. In the limit of small density ratio, these equations coincide with the well-known equations describing the Laplacian growth.
In the present study, we have studied the electro-hydrodynamic of a physical system where a Newtonian dielectric liquid column or droplet suspended in another Newtonian dielectric liquid medium in presence of a simple shear flow. Taking both the phases as leaky dielectric and perfect dielectric in to consideration, we have performed 2D numerical solution for capturing the essential features of droplet deformation in between the parallel plate configuration. For a perfect dielectric system, this study shows that the deformation characteristic follows a monotonic as well as non-monotonic variati…
The weakly nonlinear dynamics of the free surface of a dielectric liquid in an electric field directed tangentially to the unperturbed boundary is investigated numerically. Within the framework of the strong field model, when the effects of capillarity and gravity are not taken into account, it is shown that nonlinear surface waves have a tendency to break. In result of the collapse of the surface waves, the curvature of the boundary and the gradient of the local electric field undergo infinite discontinuity on the surface of the liquid. The angles of the boundary inclination remain small. The…
We use boundary-integral methods to compute the time-dependent deformation of a drop of dielectric fluid immersed in another dielectric fluid in a uniform electric field E. Steady state theory predicts, when the permittivity ratio, β, is large enough, a conical interface can exist at two cone angles, with θ_<(β) stable and θ_>(β) unstable. Our numerical evidence instead shows a dynamical process which produces a cone-formation and a transient finite-time singularity, when E and βare above their critical values. Based on a scaling analysis of the electric stress and the fluid motion, we are abl…
This paper discusses the nanopores emerging and developing in a liquid dielectric under the action of the ponderomotive electrostrictive forces in a nonuniform electric field. It is shown that the gradient of the electric field in the vicinity of the rupture (cavitation nanopore) substantially increases and determines whether the rupture grows or collapses. The cavitation rupture in the liquid (nanopore) tends to stretch along the lines of the original field. The mechanism of the breakdown associated with the generation of secondary ruptures in the vicinity of the poles of the nanopore is prop…
The stability and axisymmetric deformation of two immiscible, viscous, perfect or leaky dielectric fluids confined in the annulus between two concentric cylinders are studied in the presence of radial electric fields. The fields are set up by imposing a constant voltage potential difference between the inner and outer cylinders. We derive a set of equations for the interface in the long-wavelength approximation which retains the essential physics of the system and allows for interfacial deformations to be as large as the annular gap hence accounting for possible touchdown at the inner or outer…
The electrostatic force on a spherical particle near a planar surface is calculated for the cases of a uniform electric field applied in either normal or tangential direction to the surface. The particle and suspending media are assumed to be weakly conducting, so that that the leaky dielectric model applies. The Laplace equation for the electric potential is solved in bipolar coordinate system and the potential is obtained in terms of a series expansion of Legendre polynomials. The force on the particle is calculated using the Maxwell tensor. We find that in the case of normal electric field,…
