We study effective shear viscosity $μ^\star$ and effective extensional viscosity $λ^\star$ of concentrated non-colloidal suspensions of rigid spherical particles. The focus is on the spatially disordered arrays. We use recently developed discrete network approximation techniques to obtain asymptotic formulas for the viscosities as the typical inter-particle distance $δ$ tends to zero. For disordered arrays, the volume fraction alone does not determine the effective viscosity. Use of the network approximation allows us to study the dependence of the effective viscosities on variable distances between neighboring particles. Our analysis can be characterized as global because it goes beyond the local analysis of the flow between two particles. The principal conclusion in the paper is that, in general, asymptotic formulas obtained by global analysis are different from the formulas obtained from local analysis. In particular, the leading term in the asymptotics of $μ^\star$ is of lower order than suggested by the local analysis (weak blow up), while the order of the leading term in the asymptotics of $λ^\star$ depends on the geometry of the particle array (either weak or strong blow up). We obtain geometric conditions on a random particle array that lead to the strong blow up of $λ^\star$, and show that these conditions are generic. We also provide an example of a closely packed particle array for which the leading term in the asymptotics of $λ^\star$ degenerates (weak blow up).
Dense suspensions are non-Newtonian fluids which exhibit strong shear thickening and normal stress differences. Using numerical simulation of extensional and shear flows, we investigate how rheological properties are determined by the microstructure which is built under flows and by the interactions between particles. By imposing extensional and shear flows, we can assess the degree of flow-type dependence in regimes below and above thickening. Even when the flow-type dependence is hindered, nondissipative responses, such as normal stress differences, are present and characterise the non-Newto…
We investigate the steady-state extensional rheology of a dilute suspension of spherical particles in a dilute polymer solution. For a particle-free polymeric fluid, in addition to the solvent viscosity, the extensional viscosity due to the polymers, $μ^\text{poly}$, contributes to the total non-dimensionalized extensional viscosity $1+μ^\text{poly}$. When a small volume fraction, $ϕ$, of spheres is added to a polymeric fluid, the stress is altered by the Einstein viscosity of 2.5$ϕ$ and two additional stress contributions: the interaction stresslet and the particle-induced polymer stress (PIP…
We consider extensional flows of a dense layer of spheres in a viscous fluid and employ force and torque balances to determine the trajectory of particle pairs that contribute to the stress. In doing this, we use Stokesian dynamics simulations to guide the choice of the near-contacting pairs that follow such a trajectory. We specify the boundary conditions on the representative trajectory, and determine the distribution of particles along it and how the stress depends on the microstructure and strain rate. We test the resulting predictions using the numerical simulations. Also, we show that th…
When a drop of fluid hits a small solid target of comparable size, it expands radially until reaching a maximum diameter and subsequently recedes. In this work, we show that the expansion process of liquid sheets is controlled by a combination of shear (on the target) and biaxial extensional (in the air) deformations. We propose an approach toward a rational description of the phenomenon for Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids by evaluating the viscous dissipation due to shear and extensional deformations, yielding a prediction of the maximum expansion factor of the sheet as a function of the re…
We give the first correction to the suspension viscosity due to fluid elasticity for a dilute suspension of spheres in a viscoelastic medium. Our perturbation theory is valid to $O(ϕ\mathrm{Wi}^2)$ in the Weissenberg number $\mathrm{Wi}=\dotγλ$, where $\dotγ$ is the typical magnitude of the suspension velocity gradient, and $λ$ is the relaxation time of the viscoelastic fluid. For shear flow we find that the suspension shear-thickens due to elastic stretching in strain hot spots near the particle, despite the fact that the stress inside the particles decreases relative to the Newtonian case. W…

Recent experiments report that slowly-sheared noncolloidal particle suspensions can exhibit unexpected rate($ω$)-dependent complex viscosities in oscillatory shear, despite a constant relative viscosity in steady shear. Using a minimal hydrodynamic model, we show that a weak interparticle attraction reproduces this behavior. At volume fractions $ϕ=20\sim50$%, the complex viscosities in both experiments and simulations display power-law reductions in shear, with a $ϕ$-dependent exponent maximum at $ϕ=40$%, resulting from the interplay between hydrodynamic, collision and adhesive interactions. F…
Here, we trap and control the position of droplets to study their dynamics using hydrodynamic forces alone without an external field. The hydrodynamic trap is adapted from a previously implemented Stokes trap by incorporating a drop-on-demand system to generate droplets at a T-junction geometry on the same microfluidic chip. We then study confined droplet dynamics in response to perturbation by applying a millisecond-pressure pulse to deform trapped droplets. Droplet shape relaxation after cessation of the pressure pulse follows an exponential decay. The characteristic droplet shape relaxation…

This paper reports experiments on the shear transient response of concentrated non-Brownian suspensions. The shear viscosity of the suspensions is measured using a wide-gap Couette rheometer equipped with a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) device that allows measuring the velocity field. The suspensions made of PMMA particles (31$μ$m in diameter) suspended in a Newtonian index- and density-matched liquid are transparent enough to allow an accurate measurement of the local velocity for particle concentrations as high as 50%. In the wide-gap Couette cell, the shear induced particle migration is …
We experimentally and theoretically study impacts into dense cornstarch and water suspensions. We vary impact speed as well as intruder size, shape, and mass, and we characterize the resulting dynamics using high-speed video and an onboard accelerometer. We numerically solve previously proposed models, most notably the added-mass model as well as a class of {viscous-like} models. In the {viscous-like models}, the intruder dynamics are dominated by {large, viscous-like forces} at the boundary of the jammed front {where large shear rates and accompanying large viscosities are present.} We find t…
We study the impact between a plate and a drop of non-colloidal solid particles suspended in a Newtonian liquid, with a specific attention to the case when the particle volume fraction, $ϕ$, is close to - or even exceeds - the critical volume fraction, $ϕ_c$, at which the steady effective viscosity of the suspension diverges. We use a specific concentration protocol together with an accurate determination of $ϕ$ for each drop and we measure the deformation $β$ for different liquid viscosities, impact velocities and particle sizes. At low volume fractions, $β$ is found to follow closely an effe…

We present a theoretical framework to investigate the microscopic structure of concentrated hard-sphere colloidal suspensions under strong shear flows by fully taking into account the boundary-layer structure of convective diffusion. We solve the pair Smoluchowski equation with shear separately in the compressing and extensional sectors of the solid angle, by means of matched asymptotics. A proper, albeit approximate, treatment of the hydrodynamic interactions in the different sectors allows us to construct a potential of mean force containing the effect of the flow field on pair correlations.…
Accelerated Stokesian Dynamics (ASD) simulation and a microstructural theory are applied to study structure and the viscosity of hard-sphere Brownian suspensions in active microrheology (MR).We consider moderate to dense suspensions, from near to far from equilibrium conditions. The theory explicitly considers many-body hydrodynamic interactions (HIs) in active MR, and is compared with ASD.Two conditions of moving the probe with constant force (CF) and constant velocity (CV) are considered. The structure is quantified using the probability distribution of colloidal particles around the probe, g(…
We developed an analytical theoretical method to determine the microscopical structure of weakly to moderately sheared colloidal suspensions in dilute conditions. The microstructure is described by the static structure factor, obtained by solving the stationary two-body Smoluchowski advection-diffusion equation. The singularly perturbed PDE problem is solved by performing an angular averaging over the extensional and compressing sectors and by the rigorous application of boundary-layer theory (intermediate asymptotics). This allows us to expand the solution to a higher order in Péclet with res…
